Everything was perfect! Our server was wonderful and gave us several great recommendations. I definitely recommend making a reservation because they were busy when we went. The atmosphere was great--you could easily have a conversation with the person sitting across from you, which I always appreciate. And the food was amazing! We tried the Katsu Curry Udon, which had a little more spice than I expected, but was still really good. The Karaage was delicious, but the fried squid legs are a MUST! I first dined at GI for a Yelp event and couldn't wait to visit again because the dishes were amazing. I took advantage of UE my second time and fell in love with the Lava roll: shrimp tempura, eel, avocado, cream cheese, lightly fried and topped with spicy jumbo crab meat (not really spicy IMO), scallions, eel sauce and red tobiko. Soo fresh and amazing. Also in my UE delivery order I purchased the Wagyu fried rice (loved the rice texture, but not worth the $$, Wagyu was too chewy) and the Gyu-Harami, not as tender or flavorful as I was expecting. Enter today, I had a hair appointment and decided to order via UE again but for a take-away. I ordered another Lava, boarder line obsession, Mango Tango and Oyster fry. I was immediately greeted upon entrance and made my way to the bar to wait for my goodies. The restaurant is aesthetically nice, with big windows which let in a lot of natural light. I like the "cubby" seats which offer a private dining experience. While waiting a staff member advised me they were still working in my order, which was appreciated. Located along Rte. 50 at the edge of the CIty of Fairfax in a mall with several other excellent restaurants, Genki Izakaya holds its own for excellence. Walking in, the energy is really upbeat with both tables and booth to enjoy your meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We made a reservation and so we were able to promptly when we arrived. We sat at a booth along the window and so I was able to watch as the place filled with customers. It's hipster place, mainly young professionals. The restaurant feels very clean. Most places are clean, but this place felt extra clean to me. The menu includes a variety appetizers, meat and fish entrees, along with sushi and sashimi and many different rolls. Everything we selected was presented artfully and was absolutely delicious. "What a Tuna" was my favorite roll. Huge fan of the ambience and decor here. Stopped by on a busy Saturday for lunch. My friends and I shared everything from the mentaiko fries, katsu curry rice, yakitori platter, Japanese grilled squid, spicy scallion hand roll, Japanese chicken wings, tonkotsu ramen and the tornado omelet fried rice. I'd highly recommend the curry rice, ramen and tornado fried rice. The curry and ramen broth were rich. The tornado rice was beautifully plated and loved the tomato rice. I'd pass on the wings because they were very small. Same with the fries as they are really thin. They have an extensive cocktail menu. We enjoyed the Yuzu maze, koro oolong, Yuzu highball, and the Ube colada. This is a great place to enjoy some quality Japanese and Asian fusion cuisine. After completing some business nearby, we were drawn to Genki Izakaya's high Yelp rating. We were not disappointed. On a weekday evening, Genki was bustling with nearly all the tables taken. Still, we were seated promptly. Noticeable, but not too loud of music was playing. We love Genki's broad menu, replete with both cold and hot appetizers, ramen, skewers, udon, fried rice, fish appertizers, nigiri, hand rolls, sashimi, special rolls, and dessert. Of course, there is a bar with liquor, sake and other drinkables. JP started out with the grilled saba (mackerel) and declared it the best saba ever. Indeed, the dipping sauce paired with the saba was also especially good. I started out with a pork bun. It was delicious with a big slab of pork, a leaf of good lettuce and a tasty dressing. We also had the miso soup. It comes in a regular and spicy version. Both were decent. I went with the regular miso and livened it up with a spoonful of the chili spice powder mix that was on the table. Note: this chili spice is potent, so use sparingly. I also went with the Wagyu beef fried rice, because I've seen Wagyu on menus for years, and finally now wanted to try it. Though perhaps a tad oily, the Wagyu fried rice was delicious. It came packed with Wagyu beef that was tender and scrumptious. Even after the saba and a plate of avocado/eel rolls, JP was still hungry, so he also ordered the butabara (pork belly), Eringi (mushroom) and zucchini skewers. These were well-prepared and tasty. This fun izakaya spot is located on the corner of a very busy Fairfax shopping area. Very limited parking (most of the spots are 30 mins) so we ended up parking in the Giant lot. The decor is great -- we were seated in a booth across from the very impressive bar. The menu had so many enticing items -- it made it so hard to choose. We split a grilled saba, Brussel sprouts and ube fries. The food came out right away, was hot and delicious. My ube colada was just ok (very strong but not very colada-y). My katsu curry rice was generous with the fried pork cutlet and curry sauce. There was so much I shared with the table. My companion enjoyed the pork belly. We actually were very happy with our food -- it tasted great -- but then.... It seemed to take so long for them to bring out my friend's A5 Miyazaki Wagyu on hot stone. We asked a few times and the rest of us had finished our food. (My friend said they could actually see in my mind that I was subtracting one or two stars). But then...they brought out the Wagyu on a stone and lit it on fire. They cooked the Wagyu and sliced it and it was incredible! So tender, so flavorful, I immediately added those one or two stars back. This was the best part of the meal, and it wasn't even my meal! Genki is a great Japanese restaurant that offers more than just your typical sushi. They offer a variety of Japanese cuisine including sushi, ramen, and even Waygu beef so there's something for everybody. They offer great cocktails which were presented very nicely. We started with pepper and beef skewers and ube fries. Beef was more tender than I expected. The ramen was tasty and spicy. Waygu fried rice was great and the Waygu stone entree was bigger than I expected. They offer a good selection of sushi but we only tried one special roll. Genki is a hot spot and you cannot get reservations the day of...at least that's been my experience as I've tried numerous times and the only slots available are after 830pm. Planned ahead this time and got a resy for 6:15pm on a Sunday. Place is pretty much full and its a nice Izakaya vibe. Love the design... Taking a look at the menu and there are so many options to try - yakitori, sushi, rolls, katsu, fried rice, ramen, curry...what to get?? Yellowtail/Hamachi is my fave so we go with the Hamachi Carpaccio, Tornado Omelette Fried Rice, Chirashi Don, crabmeat cucumber roll, Sky & Crumble Roll, & Chicken thighs and Beef yakitori. Probably overordered as the portions aren't gigantic but this was a bit much for the wife and I. The food is spot on. Tasty stuff. The sushi, rolls and apps are probably the best of the bunch. Yakitori is super tender but could probably be charred a bit more. The Tornado rice is good but not the best I've had. Overall we are both extremely pleased amd enjoy the visit. I came to Genki Izakaya to celebrate my sister's birthday. The space was fun and bright, well decorated. They both a large menu featuring a variety of items from yakitori to sushi to udon the drinks also looked very cool but we just stuck to sake. Food wise, we started off with the softshell crab. This was personally one of my favorites. It was crispy and the crab meat was meaty. Then we got the chicken karaage and the yakitori. Of the yakitori I liked the oyster mushroom the most - a dark horse if you will - it almost tasted like scallop lolll. Was excited for the eel but it tasted a tad overcooked for my liking. Next, we ordered the cod udon and ooh this was CREAMY I didn't eat too much of it to be honest because I wanted to save room for everything else haha. We also got the toro bowl which came with a generous serving of toro, along with roe, uni, and seaweed to make hand rolls with. As for sushi rolls, we ordered the salmon twist, volcano roll, battle star, and wagyu special rolls, and the Alaska and shrimp avocado rolls. My favorites here were the battle star and volcano roll. I will note the battle star says it comes with jumbo crab but it's a mix of imitation crab as well. Overall, we really enjoyed our food! Service was great too. My husband and I came here for a great time, and overall enjoyed our time here. The location is easily accessible, and there is a parking garage nearby, with ample spots. Service is great, and our server was exceptional. We made a reservation for 5:15 PM (as all the other slots were taken), and were seated right away. It got busy very quickly! We went on a Friday night, during a holiday weekend, which also may have attributed to the business. For a drink, we shared a genki old fashioned, which was pretty good. As appetizers, we shared the yuzu cloud uni scallop and the takoyaki, which were both very good. My favorite was the uni scallop. We also shared a sushi boat. I recently visited Genki Izakaya in Fairfax, VA for a date night, and it was such a cozy, memorable experience. Some of the more "splurge" items didn't seem as worth it to me, like the bluefin tuna foie gras with uni. Our service was great. They explained the menu and gave us their recommendations. I came here for dinner as a double date party and I had pretty high expectations but tbh the food fell much short of my expectations. Makes sense because they have a gigantic menu and with so many items nothing can be very good. We got: - ube fries: 7/10 - was tasty but the honey mustard type of aioli didn't fit it too well in my opinion. - ikageso karaage: 5/10 - pretty oily and heavy. It would have been better if it was just the textured squid legs, made super crispy and light. I don't know why "izakayas" in America can't get this right :( - yakitori (chicken thigh, pork belly, gizzard): 8/10. These were probably my favorite thing from the entire meal. Pretty good flavor and texture, most authentic I've had outside of Japan. - bluefin tuna with foie gras and uni: 3/10. I had much higher expectations for this considering it's hefty price tag. The fish was very mid, couldn't tell it's quality. The uni and foie gras completely melded into one flavor and was overpowered by the tuna and truffle oil. The uni wasn't fresh either, my boyfriend is Japanese and he knows what old uni tastes like (has a sort of poopy taste). This was reallyyyy disappointing. - mentaiko udon: 6/10. This was relying heaaavily on the cream and not enough flavor from the mentaiko. The udon was slightly overcooked too. Still, edible. - tornado omelet: 4/10. The omelet part was good, the curry sauce was tasty but there wasn't enough of it. The "fried rice" that came underneath it all was SUCH a travesty. Such weird mushy rice! What is that!? Why do people like this? - sky & crumble 007: 5/10. Not enough fish. Very cucumber heavy. For a special roll, this was disappointing. We are ariake fans :( - yakisoba: 7/10. This was okay - a little salty but still better than our other dishes tbh. Still not very authentic though. - matcha crepe cake: 8/10. This was yummy, relies heavily on the cream but still tasty. - tiramisu: 9/10: this was great. Comes in a layered cup and was very flavorful. - yuzu cheesecake: 9/10: we got this for free on the house because of my friends boyfriends birthday. Which was very nice of them. They were amazingly friendly and helpful in deciding what to order. As the name, Izakaya, suggests, the yakitori or skewers are the stars here. It didn't matter if it was chicken, beef, or lamb. They all tasted great and went well with some beer and drinks. The ube fries were uniquely good. The sushi is average, though. Have tried Izakaya Nana, Genki Izakaya and Super Kyuramen and been to Izakayas in Tokyo and Kyoto. I love that so many Izakayas have opened in the NoVA area. The bad thing about Genki Izakaya is how crowded it can be. I'm not sure I would show up without reservations again. I've been there 3 times, the first time we didn't have a reservation and the hostess seemed very hesitant to add us to the wait list. She said the waitlist was very long. We decided not to wait. The second time we also didn't have a reservation and the hostess again seemed very hesitant to add us to the wait list. This time we did wait and were quoted 1.5 hours and it actually took about an hour. Not as bad as quoted but still busy! Third time we finally had a reservation and it still took us 20 mins to get seated as they did not have a table ready for us. To be honest the restaurant itself seems too small, they probably could be twice as big. The reason is the food at Genki Izakaya is in my opinion the best of the 3 Izakayas in the area. The Yakitori is good, hot and reasonably priced although I wish they would let you customize the $20 Yakitori Platter. I tried the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Hot Stone and was surprised that they cook it for you instead of you cooking it yourself on the hot stone. The waiter overcooked 2 pieces of the Wagyu which is annoying when it is so expensive but overall it tasted great. I like their Tonkotsu Ramen, it broth tastes great and I've had ramen all over this area, in New York City, LA area, Tokyo and Kyoto. It isn't the best I've ever tasted but it is really good especially for this area. Once seated the service is good and the food comes out quickly and everything we've had has tasted great. The only problem is how crowded it can be because its so popular! Only bad thing for us is it isn't too close about a 45 min drive but worthwhile - definitely try it if you like Izakayas and Japanese food. read more

I have visited Genki Izakaya probably 3 times now and every time does not disappoint! When visiting, it is better to have a reservation even on a weekday night because they seem to always have a good crowd of diners. I love taking friends to this restaurant because we all usually share all the dishes and it comes out quite affordable and our bellies are happy. For appetizer we went with the Ikageso Karaage (squid) which was one of the recommendations by our server and it was a great suggestion! Decent portion for two people and a great combination of fried and chewy. I do wish the sauce was in a separate dish rather than the same dish as the squid because it was a little messy and hard to eat. My favorite entree to order is always the katsu curry with rice. The katsu curry with rice always hits harder than the udon for some reason but they are pretty much the same thing if you are debating between the two. Their entrees are a huge portion. The mentaiko udon is interesting as it is very creamy and flavorful. It is not my favorite as I would probably get tired of eating it from the creaminess if I didn't share it but it seems to be one of the popular choices here. We also shared the Sky & Crumble 007 roll which is a delicious sushi roll but we love the entrees so much that we felt the sushi didn't stand out. read more

Finally got to dine in with the family. The atmosphere was lively even for Wednesday night. We were pleasantly surprised by the service! Top notch service by our amazing waitress Sabrina! Food was delicious. We started off with a few skewers( shrimp, chicken, and quail egg wrapped in bacon), miso soup (spicy and regular), cream croquette, and pork bun. Everything was delicious! Only the chicken skewers was a bit flavorless, but well cooked! For mains we got the fatty salmon, the lava roll, mango tango roll, and volcano roll. The lava roll was definitely my favorite, but all three were delicious! The rolls were huge, and honestly we had a hard time finishing it all. We've tried many of their small plates and enjoyed every one, and I've had some excellent drinks there (I still remember the visual of the smoke bubble popping over the top of my cocktail). Their menu has a super wide selection that caters to all kinds of likings whether you're in the mood for sushi, for noodles, rice dishes, or any other Japanese staples! Sushi/all their fish in general are always super fresh, melts in your mouth, and absolutely delicious. Their ramen is the best ramen spot I've had in the area. The noodles are a perfect texture giving me that authentic Japanese experience. Service is always kind and attentive! It does get relatively busy but I've never had to wait long for a table at the times that I've gone. Truly top tier experience yet still accessible to get to and with reasonable prices, you're truly paying for what you get and on top of that - there's ample parking. Good food and good times! This was my third time at Genki Izakaya and it did not disappoint. I came with a friend and we got ube fries, unagi don, and tornado omelet fried rice. Everything was delicious and the service was good. The portions for the omelet rice were pretty big, too.
