I ordered online and the BOGO deal on salmon avocado is totally worth it. The salmon tasted really good and slick. The rainbow roll had a nice assortment but felt a bit bland and I felt like the fish quality was a bit lower. The mason roll was good but I'm not sure if I'd order it again. It felt mostly like I was eating something moist and fried. The inner part of the roll was almost indistinguishable, tasty but probably not something that I'd seek out again based off personal taste. There are a lot of other rolls I wanted to try but only have so big of a stomach. The labeling on the food is also a hit confusing, $8 roll when it actually says $9 in the app. I don't know if they just need to update their code and labels somewhere. read more

Ate here for the first time after a workout. I was the only person in the restaurant, but I was totally fine with that. The service was great and they were very nice. I ordered some shrimp tempura sushi, tonkatsu with rice, and the vegetables that came with it. It was an overall satisfying and peaceful dinner. Paid around $30 for the meal. A group of us came here for a later lunch, and we started off with the Fish Tempura (the fish was flake-y, and the tempura batter was light and crisp; it was great with the drizzle of the teriyaki-like sauce on top), and the Sex Jalapeno (spicy jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese, seaweed salad, spicy tuna, and the chef's special sauce; I don't think any of the seeds were taken out, as this was super spicy! It was still tasty, though!). I chose the 'Two Roll Lunch Special,' a spicy tuna and a spicy salmon. Both had a nice rice to filling ratio, with more of the fish rather than the rice. With our entrees, you receive a bowl of miso soup and a salad with ginger dressing. The miso soup is watered down, and I was not a fan. The salad, however, was fresh and crisp, and I enjoyed the flavorful ginger dressing! Our server was nice, but there was a slight language barrier. The chef eventually came out to confirm some of our requests, and he was very sweet! We also didn't get our waters refilled often, and you have to request ice if you want your drinks cold. We've been going to Waraku for more than 6 years and we've always loved the food. However, today we had a pretty unpleasant experience that left a bad taste in our mouth. The service was subpar. The server had an earbud on and didn't get our orders right. The worst part about it, they overcharged us with the items that we ordered. As soon as we caught the price difference in our check, we asked for the menu and immediately the server mentioned that the menu is old. Clearly, she knew why we asked for the menu again. We told them that we wouldn't mind if the prices changed, but it was not proper business etiquette that they did not give us a heads up. I don't think we'll be going back. read more

Recently stopped here for a bite before a concert. While here I got the calamari appetizer which came out the same time as the seafood ramen with spicy miso broth I'd ordered as well. Though the seafood was good and fresh, the broth lacked spice...or spicy. I asked for sriracha sauce. They had none but did have chili paste? *shrugs* it did the job. The 5 piece Mixed Vegetable Roll was really tasty with seaweed, avocado, cucumber, and a couple of other veggies. My hubby surprised me with early Valentine's Day dinner and flowers. We did a take out of California roll, lobster roll and spring roll (haru maki). Although I got the dinner bento box, it felt like I ordered a course meal. The salad came first and later the California Roll came. The California Roll was not the high quality tier sushi, but it was still good. I chose Shrimp Teriyaki and Pork Cutlet as the two choices. My friend got the Shrimp Tempura and Pork Cutlet as her two choices. We both couldn't finish because it was such a large portion, so we took it home! I've ordered from waraku many times and I've always gotten the Love Boat for 2 which is always enough for my family of 4 with leftovers! Their fish quality is good and although the kinds/amount of fish change every time I order, I've never been unsatisfied with my order. I've never gone into the restaurant so I'm not exactly sure how their service is but from my delivery/takeout point of view, they're great! It doesn't take too long for them to make it either. Food was good, service was sub-par. I really wanted to like this place, it has such a nice interior and lovely aesthetic to it. It seems like a cozy place to dine, lighting is warm and inviting. Unfortunately, the service is not. The waitresses here constantly hover around you, ruining your dining experience. They rush you to order, they will rush you to eat, they will rush you to take away your plates, and they will even rush you to pay the bill. Will they even rush me to use the restroom?? Seriously, very very uncomfortable experience. If not for the great food, I would never set foot in here again. The sushi and sashimi is fresh, comes out nicely plated and looks appetizing. I tried the Angel roll and the Playboy roll on my visit here as well as the sashimi appetizer. They have an extensive menu with many dishes to choose from aside from sushi. The appetizers are decent too, I tried the fried calamari, and it was nice and crispy. Additionally, I've tried the poke bowl with the shiso salmon on a different occasion. I have to say, it is not worth the money. For $10+ I can definitely find a larger portion of the same bowl with a variety of options and also customize it however I want. It comes out in a deep dish plate, not really a "bowl". Would not recommend getting this, unless you are willing to pay more for less. First off the food is good. But the service is horrendous. I just got the lunch special today which was 3 rolls. Overall 24 pieces of sushi. The bag had 2 packets of soy sauce. I asked for more soy sauce and a little more wasabi. I was handed 3 more. I asked for more because of the amount of food I ordered which needed it and also the wasabi that they didn't give me. The sushi chef then said something in Japanese under his breath to the server girl. She put down her phone and handed me 2 more packs of soy sauce and immediately picked up her phone again without saying anything. I almost just gave back the bag and walked out. This service is inexcusable. If you have a lunch special that offers so much food than you should expect to give the required condiments that need it. Sure at that point I should go buy a bottle at the grocery store. But I should not need to if I'm buying that much food from a restaurant. I understand that business may be tough nowadays. But if the restaurant is completely empty your service should be better. If a customer orders a lot of food from you, your service should be better. If your customer asks you anything while in the place of business, your service should be better and you should not have your face buried in a phone. There are a lot of different places to get food around Fairfax. There are especially a lot of sushi places as well. Service makes THE difference. This place really needs to work on their service. The salad was very watery as if they rinsed the lettuce and did not even attempt to dry it before putting a small dollop of salad dressing that dissolved into the watery lettuce and tasted like NOTHING. I did not even bother taking a second sip of the miso soup because it tasted old like its been sitting there for weeks. The sushi was also terrible. It was packed with tempura eel, cream cheese, and tempura crunch. The flavor was a cross between crunchy, creamy, and savory; a symphony of flavors that made us wide-eyed and satisfied. We had three bento boxes to share and it was plenty of food, especially when you add in the salad and the soup. The chicken katso was good but I'd say a bit overcooked and slightly dry but the sauce that goes along with it helps. The shrimp order was incorrect--we ordered hibachi shrimp but it was teriyaki and swimming in sauce. It was good but not what we ordered. Though we did separately get the hibachi/yum sauce. The sashimi was great--on complaints. The bento boxes themselves had the usual sides--rice (choices of white, brown, fried), these fried seafood bites that were delicious, and a fried shrimp roll, which was also good. I did miss the tempura veggies that usually come but w/ the miso soup and salad it was plenty. The Twinbrook Shopping center needs some new shops. A few new places have started to pop up! One such place is this cute Asian fusion restaurant located a few doors down from Safeway. The booths and tables were very modern. I stepped into the restroom and found a it very clean. Their menu included a variety of choices: Pokey bowls, ramen, Thai, sushi and Bento boxes. They offer a sushi lunch special: choice of 2 rolls ($9) or 3 rolls ($12) includes soup and a very yummy salad. We ordered a sushi roll special of salmon skin, tempura and vegetable rolls. The pieces were very fresh. The salad had a nice dressing of finer and peanut. The hubby ordered the ramen and wasn't a big fan. He will try the bento boxes next time. THE BIG: Located in Twinbrooke Shopping Centre which I always get confused because I don't know if it's Burke or Fairfax 0.0. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here with my sister to celebrate her accepting her big girl job with a big consulting group. She was feeling sushi, so were frantically searching yelp for restaurants that wasn't closing in an hour (for context: it was 9pm on a tuesday). Eventually we saw Waraku and it even had a yelp discount of 10% if you spend $30 or more. No more! That was the spot we were going to. The menu was super long...as with any Japanese sushi spot. But fortunately there was a item that would resolve both of our sushi problems. The dinner for two. It comes with 10 pieces of sushi along with 2 specialty rolls. Warning: You don't choose the specialty rolls...the chefs surprise you with whatever they want to create at that moment. I do have to say, when the dish came out. It was beautifully presented. However, when it came to freshness and taste, the sushi came up short. Some of the fish were too fishy...meaning they've been aged for a while. The tempura flakes also tasted stale. I was impressed with how much spicy tuna they gave us...but then again, what if they were trying to get rid of it. Who knows. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Damage done here was $56.70 and that's including the 10% discount and tax/tip. If the quality of the fish and ingredients were a lil fresher, I would highly suggest this place.
