This was my first time to visit Greer's Ranch Cafe. It was recommended by a friend and so I gave it a try. First impressions: Right on the Courthouse Square in Stephenville. Inviting looking . Friendly hostess and waitress. Menu covers everything. These are just what I noticed first off. I ordered the chicken fried steak, loaded baked potato and a fresh green salt with honey mustard. Great place in downtown Stephenville. There was plenty of choices for everyone in my family. The ranch dressing tastes homemade...not sure if it is, but it is great. With my daughter starting school in town, this will be a common place for us!! read more

I really like this restaurant. All of the food on my plate comes out HOT as it should. The potatoes were crispy and hot. Egg was perfectly jammy and my pork chop flavorful. Our waitress was very nice and friendly, but overall our experience at Greer's Ranch Café was disappointing. I ordered an espresso martini -- should've known better -- it wasn't good. The food was pretty bland, especially the mac and cheese. The fried green tomatoes were heavily battered in cornmeal, which just wasn't my taste. One of our friends had to send her steak back twice -- the first time it was overcooked, the second time undercooked, and even after that, it still wasn't quite right. At that point, we just kept it. I love eating downtown in any small town, Texas. They tend to have some great hidden gem restaurants. This was no exception. The chicken fried steak was done quite well and not overly salted. Homemade cornbread with plenty of butter and honey. Fried green tomatoes that were properly breaded. The atmosphere was surprisingly modern and comfortable. Juiciest, most tender pork chop I've ever had no doubt. Aubrey was impeccably cordial & service-oriented with genuine care, so that made the meal go super smooth. She helped me whittle down the most appetizing gluten-free choices & I must say I left wishing I could come back more often since I live 2 hours from Stephenville. My bar seat was comfortable, but I do wish those patrons that came in after me were a little more social as I tried to be. Restrooms were clean & decent, easily accessible. Years ago, my wife & I dined here & I remember it was a great meal then too. Greer's is definitely a staple for this town & it's clear the they're proud of it. My hopes may have been a little too high for this cozy cafe on the square. The service was lovely and the restaurant itself was very charming, but the food missed the mark. We went for lunch and the menu seemed to be loaded with great options. We were excited to have complementary dinner rolls and cornbread but they were not worth writing g home about once we dug in. We came with hungry belly's but our plates were not licked clean when we left. The patty melt was bland and almost lukewarm with mediocre fries. The chicken and waffles lacked overall flavor, but the waffles were sweet and fluffy. The chicken fried chicken was style over substance with, once again, lukewarm sides. I hate to be this way but perhaps a refresh in the kitchen would do a lot of good for this place. I'm not mad, just disappointed. read more

The wife and I have been here several times for Sunday breakfast and regardless of attendance size, the food has always been hot and well prepared. The service remains "spot on" as well ...and if you're a "Bloody Mary Brunch" type, alcohol begins being served at 10:00. I highly recommend Greer's!!! read more

Actually, 3.5 stars. My brother and I were in Stephenville for a magnificent Jake & Dorothy's CFS. Closed on Wednesday! NO! I had heard of Greer's and seen it on tv. Off we went. We started with the house salad and homemade honey mustard dressing. Fantastic! An excellent salad. The honey mustard dressing is a star! Next came CFS, loaded baked potato, and fried green tomatoes. The loaded baked potato was excellent. My first time to try fried green tomatoes. They were ok. Let me say that I'm a CFS snob. It's either great or just average. This one was average. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't ring my bell. The restaurant is very nice, and the staff was very friendly. We will be back to try something else. read more

Our combined family of eleven was traveling in three vehicles back to Nebraska from Austin, Texas. Our first stop of the day was in the picturesque little town of Stephensville, Texas. It's the home of Tarleton State University and the County Seat of Erath County. It's full of history, culture, and charm. You can tell it's a town that cares about itself and those who visit there. Greer's Ranch Cafe epitomized this community - historical, friendly, and welcoming! We were greeted and seated quickly, despite our parties large size. We had six kids in our group and our server quickly focused on taking care of them (which always pleases the adults in the party!). Their menu is best described as homemade comfort food with a unique flair. And it's a BIG menu with a wide variety of Breakfast, Appetizer, Soup, Salad, Hamburger, Sandwich, Main Course Entrees, and House Favorites. We tried the Deep Fried Deviled Eggs - their own creation. They were interesting. I wouldn't rate them as exceptional, but they were good. I'll rate a few of the orders our group had based on their feedback, including mine. Two of the kids ordered the Jumbo Hot Dog from the Kids Menu. This marked the first time I've ever seen a hot dog served on a fresh homemade bun with hand-cut fries. They were both excellent. The special of the day was a Breaded Buffalo Chicken Breast with Onion Rings - another big hit with the group! The Stuffed Tomato Salad was delicious and beautifully plated and presented. It was served with a Fresh Made Chicken Salad in an Open Tomato with Celery, Carrot, and Hard Boiled Egg. My selection was the 1/2 LB Certified Angus Hamburger on a Homemade Bun with Lettuce, Tomato, Pickle and Grilled Onions along with Hand-Cut Fries. The burger was cooked to perfection, the bun was very fresh and tasty, and the hand-cut fries were exceptionally well prepared - something other restaurants sometimes struggle to do. The owner stopped by our table and visited with us, welcoming us to Greer's and to Stephensville. He shared stories of their history, of the annual rodeo - a major event in Stephensville (attended once by Gordon Ramsay - whose entourage Greer's fed) and the impact of the college. Before we left he came back to the table with frozen popsicles for all of the kids! To sum it all up, our food and our experience were all very enjoyable! A great stop on the town square for a lunch on the way from Dallas to Fredricksburg. AHH - the A/C was being cranked out and I LOVED it, nice and cold inside. If you are cold sensitive, bring a sweater. Makenna was our server and she was helpful, fast and attentive. We shared a chicken fried chicken sandwich and a fried green tomato stack with fresh mozzarella cheese (looking back I think I would have just gotten the fried green tomatoes as a side rather than with the cheese, but still tasty.) The chicken fried chicken sandwich was HUGE and happily the gravy was served on the side, I would have liked a spicy element in the sandwich maybe like some jalapeños to break up the richness, but overall quite good an a popular item on the menu. Great place for lunch while in town. Nicely decorated and friendly servers. Plenty of menu options. I choose the taco burger with sweet potato fries. I'm not a big fan of sweet potato fries but felt that I should order them here. I'm glad I did, they were flavorful with the right amount of seasonings and crispness. Mother's day. Had a reservation and got a table on time. The food was fantastic. I had the ham and spinach quiche at the recommendation of our server. All portions were big and the prices were very good. There were a lot of menu optiins. We will definitely eat there again when we are back in Stephenville. read more

Stopped in for lunch yesterday. First off, service was excellent. During our meal, a large party came in and the staff had to spend a few minutes rearranging some tables. Right after that, our waitress walked by and saw my tea glass was empty. She came by with the tea and apologized for letting my tea glass get empty. I didn't mind, and told her so. They had to get those folks seated, and even then, my glass was empty for maybe, MAYBE, five minutes. Excellent service. My only complaint was that the mashed potatoes on my lunch special came out completely cold. They were excellent - made from real potatoes, not potato flakes - but they were stone cold. Other than that, it was a pleasant lunch and I expect we'll be dining there again when we're in Stephenville. read more

I was so looking forward to eating lunch here when my husband and I decided to drive to Stephenville from the metroplex for a little day trip. The reviews I read were mostly great, so I figured we couldn't go wrong. Alas, that wasn't the case. First, the positive: The staff was very friendly, especially our server. She was very attentive, prompt, helpful and sweet. The food came out fast. The interior is rather plain, but bright and clean. The corn bread is DELICIOUS! I wish I would have ordered a dozen to take home. Soft, pillowy, slightly sweet. Very unique and very tasty. Now the mediocre: We started with the appetizer platter - the fried deviled eggs were bland, the fried pickles were decent and the stuffed jalapeños were amazing! My husband's burger was just average. Lastly, the negative: My chicken and dumplings were the worst I've ever had. Lukewarm, thick and glutinous, no broth to speak of, no flavor (besides raw flour) or seasoning of any kind - awful! Reluctantly, I told our server and she (so very kind!) offered to get me something else. So I chose beef stew. Oh my lord, it was just as bad! Tomato base (weird!) was so thick it coated all the potatoes, carrots and onions so a piece of carrot could not be distinguished from a potato. Only four tiny pieces of gray, gristly meat the size of my thumbnail (I had to search around the bowl to find them in the tomatoey bloodbath.) Everything tasted metallic, like it had just been dumped from a can. I didn't eat the stew and left there still moderately hungry. (Also, my hubby's fries were limp and greasy - so unappetizing.) Needless to say, I was very disappointed in this place. I keep imaging what Robert from Restaurant Impossible would say if he tasted their food. They definitely need a new chef/cook to revamp their menu. read more

First time to eat here. Met some friends at a halfway point to eat breakfast. We had chicken fried steak and eggs, steak and eggs. Steak was over cooked and thin, CFS was slightly tuff. Good biscuits. Friendly staff, nice location. To me it was just an average breakfast as far as flavor, very typical normal breakfast you could have at any location. That's ok. Wasn't bad wasn't great. They do have lunch and dinner items so I can not comment on the rest of the menu items. read more
