Our main server was new and showed, but an experienced server helped him out and kept things moving fairly smooth. Food was good, on par with most hibachi places we've been. The overall experience was great. The entertainment was fun. They made my five year olds birthday fun! We have some funny video. Our cook was fantastic and so was our waiter who was very attentive to our drinks and my little one's NEED for ketchup The staff was very attentive and nice. They accommodated us as soon as our party all arrived. The restaurant is also very large and some sections with non hibachi's tables are beautiful. Much more classy looking than the other hibachi restaurant in the area. The food was cooked in a much more healthy and palatable way. They season with lemon where applicable vs tons of the lard. This allows you to eat well vs feel sickly full. Not too much soy sauce on the rice too. Parking was a bit difficult but eventually you'll find something. Hiro Japanese Steak House was near my hotel in Wilmington so I decided to try it out as I do enjoy hibachi. When I entered I was greeted and asked if I wanted sushi or hibachi. Then walked back to the hibachi area. Another party was seated at the opposite end of the table so we were spaced out. After ordering, both soup and a salad were brought out. When the hibachi chef came out he brought gluten free soy sauce as one at the table couldn't eat gluten. I liked that the restaurant was spot on at finding gluten free items that could be ordered and making adjustments as they could. The hibachi chef was friendly to the other side of the table. The show wasn't that exciting but the food was good so that is what matters in the end. I had the filet mignon and shrimp. This came with fried rice; veggies and noodles. It was a lot of food. Sherbet came at the end too. It was too much food and the noodles could have been skipped and the sherbet. I'd eat here again but would skip the noodles next time. read more

We took my husband to Hiro for his birthday dinner and we were, unfortunately, not happy with our experience. Our waitress, who unfortunately would not tell us her name, definitely did not seem like she wanted to take care of us and definitely paid more attention to the other family at our table who were a middle aged with their adult son instead of us who were younger. It seemed as if they anticipated us to not tip well (which is the quite opposite of what we normally do) so they didn't want to take care of us as much. In terms of the food, it was decent at the restaurant but definitely messed up everyone's stomachs the time we got home over an hour later. The show, compared to other hibachi restaurants, was quite boring and not as interactive. I'm not sure if we will give them another shot, but if we do it will take some time. We have dined at this restaurant several times, but after last night, we will not be back. I had a reservation for 7 PM for our group of 5. Our entire party was there just before 7 PM. I was told that they were waiting for a group of people to get up and leave before we could be seated at our table. Around 7:35pm we saw a huge party leave. I was then told they were cleaning the tables. Mind you, at this point, the lobby was crowded. I went back up there at almost 8 o'clock and was told we were next. Five minutes later, another woman who was working the desk, came up and called two other groups. I was irate and was waiting for someone to come back up to the desk. At that point, the other woman who said we were next came up and called our names. It was after 8 PM when we finally got seated for our 7 PM reservation. To add insult to injury, a group of 7 that came in about 20 minutes before we were seated said they did not have a reservation. They were seated right after we were at the table in front of ours. They got a waitress and their drinks delivered before we ever saw our waitress. We were so frustrated and if I didn't have my older parents with me who met us there, I would've left and not given them my money The only saving grace that salvaged our night was the chef. He was one of the better chefs we have ever had. He was entertaining, and the food was good. I will stick to Okami. They don't do reservations, but if I'm going to wait for more than an hour when I do have a reservation, I might as well go somewhere that I like a little better anyway. Also, the waitress got the drink orders wrong. She also forgot my appetizer, so I had to remind her. On the edge of 3.5 and 4 for several reasons: - Hibachi portions are HUGE. I don't know if anyone could finish one of these in a single setting. They're not skimpy on the veggies and give you a boatload of fried rice, and just when you think you see the light at the end of the tunnel, you get slapped with their noodles. Everyone in our family packed up half the meal. - The veggies were a bit bland and the fried rice and noodles were overly salty. I had to squeeze a lemon wedge and drown it in the yum-yum sauce to temper the saltiness. If I had never eaten hibachi before, I would've given this a better review. The food was sub par. My dad and I both got a hibachi dinner which came with both clear soup and a salad. The soup was great and hot, the salad was good as well but it was drowning in dressing. Per the meal itself, everything came out fast and was hot but lack luster in flavor. We had to use a lot of salt and letter to make it better. We both got the steak and chicken combo dinner and the steak seemed dry and tough. Compared to other places I have tried, I'd say this is most likely due to them cutting the meat into small tiny pieces which sucks all the moisture out of them when they cook it. I don't recommend the noodles at all they were very very bland. I'd say there was more flavor on the sticky table we were sat at. Although the food was negative, the reason this review is so poor is due to the lack of management. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were told (by the manager) that it would be a 5 to 7 minute wait. After waiting approximately 40 minutes, she told us "I'm the manager they're moving fast because I told them to." She was beyond unprofessional when speaking with customers, calling them "babe" or "girl". If she continues with such behavior and employed at the restaurant, I don't see the future being bright for the business. Super awesome experience. We came in on a Saturday night and they were super packed but it didn't take long to get us on a hibachi table. From start to finish, everything was amazing. The hibachi chef was very entertaining and the food, as always, was super delicious. I had some hot sake and beer and my wife had some martinis which were very generous on the pour. Service was top notch from the moment we walked in. We sat at the bar briefly while we waited for a table and the bartenders took great care of us. Last Sunday, 40 of us dined at Hiro Japanese Steak House. We live the in same community in Leland. One of our friends organized the dinner. We had to wait for everyone to show up before being seated. Some of us headed to the bar for a drink, as the lobby area was getting crowded by our group and other diners. We had four tables next to each other. The waitress took our appetizer, drink orders (for others) and food orders. She was fine when we asked for checks by couples. Service was on the slow side so one friend when to the bar go get our drinks. It was much faster that way. DH and I had the gyoza appetizer, but that was really unnecessary. The amount of food we got for dinner was huge. The gyoza were at room temperature, not hot. They weren't anything special. Our chef was quite entertaining and funny. He laughed a lot. It was fun to watch him cooking. We started with the clear soup, a broth with thinly sliced mushrooms and green onions. It's a simple soup but didn't lack in flavors of the broth. Next we were served a salad. I love the ginger dressing! I didn't eat all of it, as we had the main meal to come. The chef started with a blaze of fire, heating up our faces. When it died off, he tossed a couple of eggs (one into his hat) before frying them up. Only two eggs for fried rice for 10 people? Um, that's not enough. Make it five the next time. He piled on a huge portion of rice and added butter, la huge block of it. Maybe a pound's worth? Waaaaaay too much!!! We all joked that our arteries were not happy. Adding corn, onions, and peas, he worked his magic on the fried rice. He shaped it into a heart, then into a micky mouse shape. The rice was excellent, but I couldn't help thinking again and again about the amount of butter that he used. His next item were noodles, but he used linguini instead of Japanese noodles. This was my least favorite item that night. He made up a batch of vegetables: Onion, zucchini, mushrooms, and broccoli. He has the right timing of everything, as they were not overcooked. Now, the most important part for me: I ordered the filet mignon and I like the meat served *RARE* (most others ordered medium to medium-well). He placed all the meats down at the same time and I repeated *RARE* please. No complaints here. The filet was almost perfect! The middle wasn't as rare as I'd like but with a filet mignon, I let it slip because it's such a great tender cut of meat. The meat was well-seasoned. I loved it. For dessert, green and orange sherbet was served. I had one bite. I couldn't eat all of my dinner. The restaurant did a great job in taking care of a full house. It's a fun place, the chefs are entertaining and the food is good. I don't think I'll go back to a Hibachi place for a long time. I still can't get over the amount of butter. I have a severe wheat allergy and the staff was super accommodating with cooking my food in a clean separate area with gluten free soy sauce plus everything was so delicious. After living in Wilmington for over 4 years, we had yet to visit a local restaurant, offering a true hibachi experience. Our son loves watching hibachi chefs do their thing and we wanted to treat him since his grades and efforts in school have been on the rise. Going through the reviews on Yelp, and noticing that Hiro's overall score is 3.5 stars, I must admit that my expectations were not very high. FOOD: Hibachi filet mignon and sea scallops dinner; hibachi chicken dinner and a hibachi steak dinner. I've dined at countless hibachi restaurants across the USA in my life. Some have been total misses, some have been home runs (queue in Katana in Buckhead, GA and Sapporo in Indianapolis, IN) and some were just middle-of-the-road. Hiro? I'd say it was a solid triple. The filet mignon was buttery, tender and almost melted in your mouth. The scallops were adequately sized, fresh and wonderfully cooked. I also loved how NONE of the scallops served, included a single grain of sand! The chicken, regular steak option, veggies and sauces were also fantastic. I honestly was in shock and awe with the steaks. The rice and noodles weren't bad but they also weren't a huge hit for us. Once you added in the included white and ginger sauces, it elevated the flavor a few notches but overall, I've had better fried rice and noodles. Having noodles and rice both included with a hibachi dinner was different for me. I've always had the choice between one or the other, but never both so this was also unexpected. Hoping for true yakisoba or udon noodles, we were presented with linguine noodles prepared yakisoba style. I'm not sure if this is standard or maybe Hiro ran out of traditional Japanese buckwheat noodles but I did find it odd how they used Italian-style noodles. These were the biggest letdown for me, but they weren't entirely terrible. The ginger salad appetizer was a huge hit (love that dressing) and the shrimp served before our main course were also very nice and flavorful. To sum up the food, all of the proteins were fantastic and exceeded my expectations, as was the ginger salad. The shrimp and veggies were very good. The rice was acceptable. The noodles were a big miss. SCORE: 4.2 STARS!! SERVICE: This is where it gets a little tricky and is on a slippery slope so I'm going to select my words and score with caution. When we arrived at Hiro, we walked in and approached the hostess station, where one young lady was overseeing almost everything, including phone orders. It was Thursday evening, Veteran's Day, very busy and their phone was ringing off of the hook. I felt bad for this poor girl since it was easily observable that she was struggling and stressed out. She took our last name and stated the wait would be approx. 30 - 40 mins. Ok, no problem. Nothing else better to do anyway plus every restaurant around Hiro was also jamming. We waited for 25 minutes and then our name was called. We ventured back with another family of 3 and a couple who was there celebrating a birthday. The interior is cool, clean and very large! I was amazed with how many hibachi tables there were inside, with 5 or 6 of them not being used. As we sat down, a young, tall man introduced himself briefly and took our orders. Even he seemed to be worn down from the evening's turnout but he did fine. The only miss from our server was that the lemons for 2 peoples' waters did not come out as requested. The hibachi chef was entertaining, energetic and he missed the top of his toque with the flipped egg, landing on the floor to his right. He looked down, confused as to how it missed but this made it all fun and interesting. Service was prompt throughout the evening, food preparation was great but was not white glove treatment, either. I would say that the service this night was acceptable. SCORE: 3.9 STARS!! OVERALL SCORE: I want to go back here again, as does our son. I believe I would probably try going on a night that isn't as busy as a weekend or holiday, just to see how the service could be without heavy anxiety falling on the shoulders of the staff, which I believe was light. Witnessing how fatigued, exhausted and overwhelmed the staff appeared to be, it actually made me feel guilty for coming in, although I know that emotion is not on them. The food was fantastic, sans noodles and the atmosphere was great. If you're planning on dining here on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, be prepared for a long wait and maybe an experience similar to what we had. I think if we were to go back on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening ...that's where it's probably at. I would go back time and time again to Hiro just for the filet that I ordered. It's that tender and buttery. Thank you, Hiro and staff for a very nice dinner experience. Very odd experience at this hibachi grill. Usually we have entirely too much food and take it home at other hibachi locations but the portions here were very small especially taking the prices into consideration. Even other reviews look as if the portions were bigger than what we got today. The food was VERY salty, the veggies were undercooked or just flat out not cooked at all, we found dirt on the mushrooms, and our steaks were requested as medium and medium rare and they were both well done. The GM was apologetic and nice but ultimately did not give any discount. Asked us to come back and give them another chance.... Not planning on doing so. read more

My waitress came to greet me quickly and got my water to my table quickly so I was able to look over the menu. I went with my wife and son, we had such high expectations after seeing all the great reviews but I'd give this place 2.5 stars. It's definitely not the cleanest place I've ever eaten, we sat by the sushi bar, the floor was sticky and the table and chairs were barely wiped down. Our server was nice and the shrimp tempura appetizer was decent but not great. We all got hibachi combinations, the noodles were ok, my steak certainly didn't taste like filet and my shrimp were small and undercooked. The fried rice was bland as was the white sauce. My wife and son were equally disappointed with their meals. There were 3 people at the host stand talking and no one acknowledged us as we left, not that it's a huge deal but it would've been nice after spending well over $100 for mediocre food. I......love this place. It's just fun to do the hibachi. I've been to steakhouses all over the country and their chefs are pretty damn good (best ones I ever saw were at Japan in epcot center). The food is always consistent and delicious, plus, u get a ton of food for the money. They also have great discount prices for sushi and other dishes during the week if u don't want the "cooking show" experience. When I originally called on a Friday afternoon to see if reservations were necessary, the hostess said to go ahead and make them just because they had several large parties that night and it would prevent waiting. She was so right. We got there and were seated in minutes. The waitress took our drink orders promptly and then we just had to wait for additional people to be seated with us since we were eating teppanyaki style. The only delay was in receiving our appetizer, but it was sushi and the chefs were visibly swamped (we could see into the kitchen when the doors opened). The teppanyaki chef was entertaining and the food we ordered was delicious. I had the filet, which was cooked perfectly and so tender. My significant other had the teraki chicken. It was slightly dry, but still good. He'd also had a bite of my filet, so he could have been a little bias! With sides of fried rice, mushrooms, zucchini/squash/onions, noodles, a few pieces of shrimp, soup, and salad, we most definitely had leftovers for days. Hiro has been a local hotspot for awhile. I remember dining here when it was at a different location. I do not think the hibachi is the best in town but it is still very good. I do like getting delivery sushi from here. It is one of the best places that delivers quality sushi. They have a nice menu that features thinks that some other places do not have.
