We visited Masa Sushi and Grill on a Saturday evening, having made a reservation in advance for our party of 5. The interior was spacious, and actually had two connected dining rooms with plenty of seating. The ambiance was casual but pleasant. For drinks, it was BYOB, so my parents brought their own beer and wine, and Masa provided the glassware. For food, I started with the Salmon Tartar, which was fresh and very tasty. The portion size was large enough to share between a few people. I also tried some of my brother's T.Y.S. Sashimi, which we really liked - great cuts of fish. The Wasabi Octopus was a unique dish, but the wasabi flavor was a bit too strong for me. For my entree, I chose the Spring Scallops off the specials menu. While I'd never seen a roll like this before, I can't say I was obsessed. The scallops were tasty, but the spring roll inside of the sushi rice was a little strange. My family enjoyed the rest of their items, including the Crazy Roll (very large portion size), Nabeyaki Udon (one of our favorites), Spicy Salmon Roll, Negihama, Yellowtail Sashimi, and Eel Sushi. My table had not been set and I waited for chopsticks and a napkin after my food arrived. The shrimp tempura appetizer was horrible, soggy coating and greasy. I ordered the sushi platter for one and the fish was not much to my liking, three pieces had skin on them (grayish color) and they gave you eel which is an acquired taste (not mine). Of the 8 pieces I left three. The salad that came with the dinner was iceberg lettuce, center pieces and not very enjoyable. I also feel like we were looked at as if " how dare you walk in with no reservation " but they had room and sat us.... started with spring rolls. mushy inside.. came with no sauce. shrimp tempura app was ok. pork belly special was soggy and not appetizing in the least. we also got some sushi.. spider roll which was fishy spicy tuna roll which came with no spicy mayo and was also fishy. the way they were platted was idk strange but the sushi was not up to par for me. Mainly a take out place during the week and packed on the weekends. Ordered a shrimp tempura roll and to my dismay it was only 5 pieces and literally one shrimp cut up and spread across the roll. Do not understand how it was $17.00- what a rip off. Charged an extra 3 dollars for soy paper/ this roll couldn't fill a small child. The ocean roll is cheaper with salmon and more pieces. I came here with my parents about 10 years ago and today my husband I decided to try since we were in the area. Not much as changed which I really appreciated. (Cold as well as fun hot appetizers and January specials). We ordered 3 appetizers: shrimp agedashi tofu, port cutlet with egg and onion (katsuni), and crab croquette. Appetizers: 4/5 Our favorites were croquette and katsuni. Super flavorful and croquette was extra crispy. Def did not need the tonkatsu sauce that it comes with. Agedashi tofu was a bit dissapointing as the there was too much sauce for the tofu and it lost its crispiness. The sauce had not much flavor. Main dish: 4/5 We ordered futomaki, dragon rolls, and nabeyaki udon. Our favorite was nabeyaki udon. Amazing udon broth warmed up our soul and noodle was very nicely bouncy and cooked well. Worked beautifully with the clams, chicken, and mushrooms. Dragon rolls was fresh and beautifully made. The only disappointment was futomaki which lacked a bit of sweetness. Overall, we agree that we would def come back. I would def try their omakase next time. I ordered off of the al la carte section and got the fatty tuna, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and sweet shrimp. All were really delicious! We also got the eel over rice which was decent but not very high quality eel (reminds me of the eel you would microwave in the pre-marinated packets). Lastly we got the crazy roll which is a specialty roll $20 and it was HUGE. Really delicious roll and the best part was I didnt feel sickened by the fish at the end. But since our go-to wasn't open, we decided to give Masa a try. The food was fresh and amazing and the bill was just a little more than what we'd normally pay. My favorite was the duck tenderloin appetizer...so good and a menu offering not available at our other place. Wonderful Authentic Japanese Food! We started with the Agedashi Tofu with Shrimp. It was delicious, generous with the shrimp and a reorder on our next visit. We then ordered the Sushi/Sashimi Omakase which was fantastic. There was nothing on the plate that wasn't beautiful, and tasty. The fish was superb, the fatty tuna melted in my mouth. The only drawback of the Omakase was the portuon. I was still peckish after eating. It came with a salad but could have used a bowl or rice, or maybe a dessert. We also ordered the Spicy Tuna roll, which was a bit disappointing. It was too subtle in flavor for our liking, but everything else was perfect. I love Masa. I will still drive here from Fort Lee just to have good quality omakase. The service is always excellent. The sushi is FRESH. They give you a good portion of rice and fish, they are not stingy. I think it's the best omakase in NJ considering the price, it's a steal. Don't forget to order Shrimp Tempura, they make it so crispy and batter is not too thick! I always eat here and leave feeling happy. I had the lunch combination called Americas favorite. It came with chicken teriyaki, white rice, miso soup, 6 piece cali roll, shumai, green beans and potato. The teriyaki sauce on the chicken was excellent. The rolls were perfectly made with less rice and more of the filling. The shumai was fried, Light and crispy. The green beans were perfectly cooked yet crispy. The food came out so quick Im so happy I had that for lunch! The waitress were all helping each other and all super nice. The tonkatsu was delicious - crispy and the flavor was spot on. The portions here are very small for lunch. It was one cutlet and a bowl of rice. The lunch special also included a miso soup. I was definitely still hungry afterwards! Instead of the garnish/radish (no flavor), I would have enjoyed either some pickled vegetables or a salad or something on the side. The lunch menu is pretty limited with not much room for customization... I did come here intending to try the sushi but could not find a lunch special that offered salmon... I think it would have been ~$7 per roll if I ordered from the regular menu. The place is packed and you will likely sit VERY close to the people next to you... you can hear every word of your neighbor's conversation. Cute place - modern and clean and the food is good.
