We do take out from this place from time to time when I visit my family in Santa Fe. I try to adjust my expectations accordingly (Seattle vs Santa Fe). Some of the rolls we orders were decent, but they were a bit inconsistent and some were falling apart. The sashimi tasted decent but you can tell some was flash-freeze sushi. The calamari, which seemed like the safest option, was the worst thing we ordered. All breading just a tiny bit of overcooked calamari. It's good, but "New Mexico good." If you're visiting from out of town, maybe skip to dessert sushi and get something more predictably well prepared (ie, fresh). If you live in Santa Fe, it definitely scraches the itch. I've been a longtime fan of Masa Sushi in Santa Fe, having frequented it years ago before moving away. Recently rediscovering it, I was excited to revisit. My first visit, despite initial reservations about the appearance and cleanliness - we were surprised with an exceptional dinner courtesy of Leo's, the sushi chef's expertise. The second visit a few days later reaffirmed this positive experience, with Leo again delivering outstanding food and service - that was a small to go order. However, my third visit, which was to celebrate my husband's birthday during a recent storm of which he had to stay home to oversee our dog the suffers from seizures, turned out to be a disaster turn nightmare. Notably, Leo wasn't present, and the substitute chef and hostess seemed inattentive. I ordered takeout, carefully transporting it home in an ice box to keep everything fresh. Unfortunately, the packaging was inadequate - all sushi was jumbled together in a large tin foil container, resulting in damaged dishes and a mess - smelt eggs all over the upside down yellow tail that lost it's rice boat. Given the significant investment ($100 including a $15 tip) and the special occasion, the disappointment was substantial. When I called to express my concerns, the restaurant's response was unhelpful, with repeated claims that the owner wasn't available. After being hung up on multiple times last week trying to reach the owner, I eventually spoke with Leo, who shared with the owner the issues, the same owner I was told was not there, and arranged for a refund. However, the owner's response - suggesting we never return - felt like a punitive measure, especially given we'd done nothing wrong. This experience raises concerns about the restaurant's customer service and treatment of patrons. While the food was generally good, the handling of this situation was unprofessional and left a lasting negative impression. We would never go back now as we don't trust the handling of the food. I have never in all my years serving and eating in restaurants has this occurred and I was amazed that Masa Sushi would treat their patrons as such. read more

Masa Sushi is a locally owned, mom & pop type of restaurant that has been around for ages. The age shows in the decor and the ambiance is very casual, but you come here for the yummy sushi! The nigiri, sashimi, and roll offerings are plentiful and I enjoyed everything I had. Prices aren't the most inexpensive, but they also are from expensive ranging from 10-20 dollars per roll. There are also plenty of cooked bento box style dishes and vegetarian options! My favorites were the Espanola, Solana, Santa Fe and mountain rolls. The quality of the fish was much better than some of the other casual sushi restaurants in town. I also really enjoyed the miso soup. I just wish the service was a little quicker once we finished our meal, but this place was busy and there weren't very many employees so I give them a pass. read more

Santa Fe is beginning to see sushi restaurants everywhere so it's not always easy to find one that has it all. My recent visit to Masa Sushi pleasantly surprised me into being sure that I returned soon. They served 20 of us, showing me they can handle a group with professional ease. Orders were quickly taken and food came out as soon as prepared. We asked for individual checks which was no problem. Best of all, the wait staff had it all under control, processing and returning our payment cards to the right guest. They were efficient and accommodating. The restaurant had the typical look of a strip mall but hidden away was a room that was reached through a curtain, revealing a huge mostly empty room with two long tables set up just for groups, affording us privacy and the opportunity to share conversations with each other. Don't let the location fool you. This is solid sushi (&other dishes, including Pad Thai!) We had hot sake, Tesuque Roll (tempura asparagus & spicy tuna), unagi roll, salmon sushi, Miso soup.... & unagi sushi for dessert! ;) Well priced & servers were fast & helpful. I have eaten here several times for lunch during week days over the years and it is a nice quiet friendly restaurant with great food. I usually go with their chicken or salmon bento box that comes with soup, salad, rice, your protein choice and 4 piece California roll. read more

Best sushi in Santa Fe in unassuming location. Not much atmosphere but rolls are the best around.

I really wanted to like this place, and I was so excited to go. A cute little hole in the wall, kind of dingy on the inside but with authentic-feeling Japanese decor here and there. Unfortunately, it smelled like old fish and bleach. My wife got the chicken yakisoba, which I had a bite of. It tasted swampy, murky, like the sauce was dirty or old, and the chicken was just okay. Sort of bland and dry. I tried to play it safe with a couple california rolls. When they arrived, there were two colors of wasabi mashed together on my plate, one normal-looking and one a kind of radioactive green. Did they run out of one kind mid-plating and switch to a different brand? It definitely didn't appear to be intentional (or appetizing). The california roll used crab stick, cucumber, and a dab of avocado for filling, so none of the creaminess that I love so much. Mostly just crunchy and watery. And it was watery. There were little puddles on my plate when I picked up the pieces of sushi. And even, dare I say it, slimy. The wasabi was extremely harsh, with very little flavor (and I LOVE wasabi). I didn't finish my food. I want to find a decent sushi place in Santa Fe so badly, but boy, was this not it. read more

Looking at the Google reviews that say the food is good, either those reviews are paid for or those people are on crack. Staying in the wonderful town of Santa Fe, we were looking for a break from the New Mexican food and said why don't we have Asian food for a change? Without a doubt this is the most awful disgusting Japanese restaurant in Christendom, perhaps the entire world. First of all, it is a rundown dingy environment, strike one. Honestly, not being a lover of uncooked Japanese food there are usually a few cooked dishes which are acceptable. I had the beef chow mein which had no resemblance to any chow mein I've ever had anywhere in the past 68 years of my life. It was MEINLY beef dog food sliced up in completely flavorless noodles with a few vegetables sprinkled in. Strike two, three, four, five, six and seven! The regular Japanese rolls that my family had were pretty awful as well. One of the dishes my daughter has was seaweed that nearly made her choke. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT EATING HERE. The sushi and sashimi was delicious!!! We moved here from Alaska so our expectations are usually pretty high. Good choices of sake by the bottles as well. Service could have improved a bit ended up paying and leaving since our ice cream took 15 minutes and the table next to use was talk at a 10 volume (of course not the waitresses fault) would definitely return! read more

Nothing that said, Wow, I'm coming back here again. Also, asked for a cold sake and was served a waxed lined paper cup. What? Not used to getting my cold sake from a paper cup. That was strange. Where to start... Waitress was less than helpful and involved. The beer came out barely cool, glass was warm. The sushi was fair at best, but not great. Some of the fish in the sushi wasn't up to the extreme freshness required to be eaten raw. And did I mention the waitress acted like we were there to make it easy on her and was put out that we didn't go out of our way to order so as to make her job easier. Went to Masa Sushi today for lunch with a bunch of folks from work who had been there before. They all seemed to enjoy it, but I found it to be pretty meh. We came in at noon on a Friday and were the only people in the entire place. For the whole duration of lunch. Not generally a good sign. The miso soup was extremely bland and their non-sushi menu is very limited. The vegetable tempura we had was passable but again very bland. The sushi itself was at best just okay. I'm half-Japanese myself and am perhaps a little bit more picky about sushi restaurants than some, but there was nothing at this place that would make me want to come back for more. What absolutely killed it for me was the bill at the end coming out to be around $18 per person for lunch. This was not even close to being an $18 meal. I really hope I can find some better Japanese spots elsewhere. read more

That's double what it should cost, and you know it isn't quality. $30 for a chirashi is also extremely high for this average quality fish. A-ok sushi restaurant. I was looking for something basic and local and this was it! There are many options to choose from in this smaller sushi spot and it's reasonably priced. The chef put extra spicy mayo and a spicy chili and garlic sauce on the side so we could control our spicy level (neither was that spicy but they were tasty, especially the chili garlic mix). The fish tasted fresh and I really liked the flavors in my spicy scallop roll. Fyi - The rainbow roll consists of a California roll on the inside and the crab is imitation, so not too flavorful but good if you're looking for a basic roll with a variety of fresh fish sliced on top (nice mix). read more

My husband and I go to Masa sushi for really good Pad Thai in town. Hands down the best Pad Thai you can get in Fe. The owner is Thai, and yes while it is Japanese restaurant, they serve one Thai dish and that's Pad Thai. My husband and I share Pad Thai rice noodle and sushi whenever we go here. The only down side is... Pad Thai is priced on a pretty pricy end. But hey, that's what we sign up for when you live in Santa Fe. read more

5 stars for serving delicious food and for surpassing expectations. An unassuming restaurant tucked into a small shopping center not far from downtown. Favored by locals. If this were LA I'd be a bit pickier and probably wouldn't rank it so high. But the food is great, the fish is fresh and the chef definitely knows what he's doing. The sashimi combo is amazing. Also loved the cucumber salad. Large menu of rolls, if that's your thing. I prefer to stick with the nigiri. The Santa Fe New Mexican ran an article earlier this year about obtaining fresh fish in Santa Fe. The conclusion of the article was that with today's sourcing methods, the fish arrives here just 6 hours later than they get it in the Bay Area. read more

Masa Sushi, in my opinion, used to be ,,, emphasis on "Used to Be" the best place for sushi in Santa Fe. Unfortunately, the Covid virus the last 2 years has taken its toll on Masa Sushi as it has with numerous businesses with respect to hiring employees. However, the owner of Masa Sushi has taken the employee hiring art form to an unbelievable low point. My wife and I went here last night. The service was slow, inaccurate in that there were items we ordered and never received. We were charged for items we never received. No one could clearly explain what the "problem" was. Our biggest mistake last night was not in going here for dinner. Our biggest mistake was that we didn't walk out early on when the problems surfaced and refuse to pay the tab. We've tried several sushi/Japanese restaurants in Santa Fe, and this is our favorite. Obviously a family operation with a homey/funky vibe, the sushi is excellent. Hubby tried the Pad Thai on our last trip, and it was so good we couldn't stop eating it even though we were stuffed....my standard of measurement of good Pad Thai. I have honed my 35 years of eating sushi in Los Angeles. The service staff at Masa Sushi in Santa fe should not be allowed to have contact with any human. They are rude to the point they dont want their best customer who spends over $5,000 per year to enjoy a meal. Beware! They will raise prices on the bill before you pay. Unfortunately, they forgot an item I had ordered for takeout. when I came back to pick it up I looked at the menu again and realized I had been seriously overcharged: I was able to show this to the server based on my receipt and after using a calculator they agreed (and blamed "the computer"). this would fall under the category of "honest mistake" if not for the fact that they were not really willing to fix the bill (I was finally handed $9 from the till (less than what I was overcharged for). So, if you get takeout be prepared to get overcharged, not get what you ordered, have to go back, be forced to go over the receipt with a fine tooth comb, and then deal with someone very reluctant to fix their own mistakes (even when they admit that they were overcharged by a quite a lot). The was most unpleasant experience at a restaurant I have had in a very long while. read more

My first visit to Masa Sushi was a very pleasant surprise. Located in a strip mall, one would not expect to fine such imaginative sushi preparation here. A rather non-descript interior greets you upon entering, along with a chalkboard of unusual specials. We sat at the bar and, on the recommendation of departing guests, chose the Crunchy Salmon Roll and the Veggie Caterpillar Roll, both exquistely prepared by the Thai Sushi chef. Then we ordered the Tesuque Roll, which had a crunchy Asparagus tempura and a very Spricy tuna---a tad too spicy for me. All in all, an extremely enjoable sushi experience. I look forward to returning soon. For 3 giant rolls, beers and tip, bill came to $60. read more
