First off, this place is just an absolute gem! The food is fantastic. My friend and I came here for dinner while out of town for work. I got my usual, tandoori chicken, cheese naan and vegetable samosas. Our service was excellent. Our order was taken quickly and food came out fast. In what seems to be a remodeled gas station (complete with a working drive-through window for takeout orders), this Indian place offers one of the few interesting dining options I could find in Richmond. They were quite busy with both dine-in and takeout orders when I visited, and some people were clearly getting antsy, but I was out of there in a little less than an hour with my leftovers (having taken the boxes that were set out and packed them myself to save time). Nonetheless, I did have my water needs taken care of, and like every other visitor received a free papadum (a lentil-based cracker) with some chutneys to tide me over while I waited. The best thing I ordered was the allu tikki chaat; I always like chaats because it gives the house an opportunity to be creative. Do you really need red onion and green onion? No, but it's tasty, and the overall mix of flavors was fresh. My bhindi masala (okra) I asked for Indian hot, and it had maybe the slightest hint of chili. Either I was misunderstood or they don't really do spicy (their website seemed oriented around slating the concerns of people who aren't used to spicy food, so I don't know). A garlic naan was pillowy soft. While I might have wished for faster service or spicier food, it was still a success to have found vegetarian cuisine with fresh, dynamic flavors. read more

While I miss the buffet that was shut down because of COVID and has not made it back. With the buffet you were able to try a variety of their wonderful foods and lots of warm nan bread and condiments. They now serve papadum and some chutneys to start the meal which is a really nice addition. I am a big fan of their Palak Paneer, it has a wonderful flavor and the cheese is such a wonderful texture. All main dishes are served with long grain basmati rice that is always cooked to perfection. The servings are large and a good value. I usually get two meals out of one serving. The service is friendly and helpful if you have any questions. The restaurant is comfortable. I have not done take out here, but I would think most of the food would travel well, because the leftovers always warm up great! read more

This was my second time and it was better tonight than I remember it last time. The service was good each time but it was probably just my choice of meal that made this trip better. The first time I had the Seafood Vindaloo, hot with waiter's recommendation, with Garlic Naan and it was good, good enough that I had to come back. Tonight I I had the Bhuna Lamb, Indian Hot this time because regular hot was kinda weak, with Garlic Naan. It was excellent and the naan was buttery and garlicky. Another check mark this place gets is that the last time I was here I left my debit card when I paid the bill and I didn't realize it until the next day. I returned to pick up my card and had to show ID, good for them, and got my card back with no issues. The honesty goes a long way and is much appreciated. Papadum, lightly spiced lentil wafers, with onion and mint chutney are served first. The wafers were crisp and airy while the chutneys were fresh, bright and tasty. I started with a bowl of Mulligatawny Soup. This is a soup made of lentil purée and carrots in a hot broth topped with fresh herbs. The soup was delicate, slightly spicy and the herbs added a brightness to the dish. Also, this is Batman's favorite soup. My fiancé had Allu Tikki Chat. This is made with pan fried potatoes, fresh onions, tomatoes, cilantro and chick peas, then topped with a plum sauce. The dish is sweet, salty, fresh, crunchy and it just all works well together. I had the Chicken Vindaloo which is served with jasmine rice, and we ordered garlic naan. The vindaloo is chicken and potatoes cooked in a tangy hot sauce. The chicken and potatoes were tender and seasoned well, but the sauce is what makes this dish. Spiced well, it is rich, thick and creamy. I could have just had the sauce by itself. The only knock was I ordered it hot, but it was served mild. The garlic naan was fresh and chewy, but a few pieces were a bit crispy and slightly over done. Masala Fine Indian Cuisine serves a large variety of Indian dishes. Most if not all can be made with chicken, lamb, goat, seafood or vegetarian. When Masala used to have their buffet for lunch, it was amazing! That way, you could try a little bit of everything. But since covid, they no longer offer the lunch buffet. They now just offer items from their menu. Recently, the quality of the food has gone a bit downhill. There's never many people in the restaurant dining, but the servers rarely come around to check on tables. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but when eating spicy food, drinks and refills are a must! The food is also pretty costly for the amount you get, which is another reason I miss the buffet they used to offer. Tried the lunch buffet today and it was satisfying. I absolutely love Indian food, it's in my top 3 favorite ethnic cuisines, so I always have to try it when I'm in a new city or traveling. I found Masala to be on par with other places but not amazing. My favorite will always be Tandoor in Lexington. But anyway, the buffet was well-stocked and had a lot of choices. They post their buffet menu daily on facebook, so be sure to check that out before you go. Today they had a couple of my favorites, chicken vindaloo, a vegetable curry, among others. They also have lettuce, cucumber salad, Raita, mint chutney, all the delicious usuals of Indian buffet fare. For 2 of us the bill came to $19 for Sunday lunch buffet, so that's a great deal! This was the perfect dinner after a cold day at the soccer field. The chai tea was rich and delicious. We had the chicken curry, vindaloo, and coconut.
