Went to a new restaurant in Richmond. It's Tabla ,an Indian restaurant. It's in an Older shopping center so my expectations were low. I was pleasantly surprised. Tabla was well decorated and spotlessly clean. We were promptly seated and given water. The menu was easily read and full of options. We ordered Butter Chicken and Chicken Tiki Masala. We chose mild seasoning for both. Garlic Naan Bread too. Both dishes were delicious. The waiter continued to bring water before our glasses were empty. I would recommend you try Tabla. Interesting place for lunch with Indian-inspired items you won't find at other places. The ambiance is just okay as it is a combination Indian grocery store and restaurant. Service was friendly and efficient on a mid-week weekday. The chicken tikka masala pizza was good. The naan crust was a nice variation from a typical pizza crust. The chicken itself had good flavor and the sauce was also good. Nothing really remarkable. The butter chicken melt was noted on their menu as being one of their best sellers and our server highly recommended it. The presentation was actually better than the taste: it was okay, but the butter sauce really didn't have much flavor at all. The masala fries were crispy and well-seasoned. I would rate this place a 3.5. I'd like to round it up to a 4, but it just didn't quite get there for me. Maybe it's better as a dinner spot for more traditional Indian dishes. read more

So I finally made my way here about a week after they opened up. Let me just say, the adverting has been misleading to say the least. I was expecting a "good" sit down place (proper restaurant) but it turned out to be a portioned out shop. Meaning one side is a grocery shop with a different name and the other side is a sit down with 10 booths. Within minutes, every single booth except one was filled. (I was taken aback because in their social media campaign they kept showing flashy images of restaurant and food that are not to be found here) I went in at 12:10pm.. took them a minute to seat me.. but about 10 mins for the server to take my order. It's just one person bussing, seating people, taking orders.. everything. 8 mins post ordering I got my Sugar cane juice... small glass, straw brought without packaging, not really chilled and totally tasteless! No ginger or lemon or black salt or anything. Not recommended. 0/5 The bhallay and papri chaat out quickly after the juice. Papri was the packaged kind and slightly stale but bhallay were good. 3/5 Next came the Manchurian fries .. they had some sort of gravy on them, brownish looking.. not bad, but not the Manchurian I'm used to. Also had some green onions and a red pepper. 3/5 The chicken tikka pizza that I was most excited about turned out to be the biggest disappointment. It came out with an overdone crust, a handful of bland chicken pieces thrown on top and topped with sourish orange mayo!!! Like who puts mayo on a pizza????? I tried to my best to make it palatable by asking for garlic powder and red chili flakes. I was told they didn't have red chili flakes and garlic powder came out while I paid my bill! 0/5 for pizza Overall ambiance: 2.5/5 Overall service: 2/5 Value for money: 2.5/5 Overall taste: 2/5 It's still gonna be a hit due to the EKU students But I won't be back. read more

We went to check them out on the grand opening day. Service was a little slow since theyre learning. It was my first time having Indian food and didn't know what to expect. I have to say that it was all delicious. I had the Tikka masala and other items. It was all so yummy. I even had to get some togo, unfortunately waited a hour due to them running out of food. Normally I wouldn't wait this long but I wanted my husband to experience it too! I think if you're planning on going give them a few weeks to get used to the rush. Food was delish! read more

Recently, while craving Indian food and knowing that Richmond had just opened a new restaurant, the Fat Man and his wife headed to Tabla Modern Indian restaurant. Tabla has six locations throughout the United States, and its mission is to introduce the incredibly delicious tastes of India to the community. We started with the Masala Fries. These were prepared with fries tossed in a spicy masala seasoning. The fries were out of a bag but cooked perfectly, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The seasoning was light and offered some salt and flavor in the background, but I did not get much from the spicy heat. Served with ketchup, which the sweet went well with fries seasoning. We then sampled the Chicken Tikka Pizza, made with spicy chicken tikka and melted cheese on a crispy crust. The chicken had good flavor and seasoning, but it was not spicy. Some pieces were dry while others were juicy, but all were tender. The vegetables were crunchy and fresh, the green peppers being delicious. The cheese was melted well and offered a gooey texture. The sauce lacked much flavor and creaminess, which I am used to in a Tikka sauce. The naan bread was moister and chewier than I expected; a crunch in the crust would have offered the dish a new texture. We then split the Tabla's Homestyle with Lamb cooked medium. This dish is made with a traditional sauce with a homestyle touch, featuring a balance of spices, onions, and tomatoes. The jasmine rice was cooked well and added texture to the dish. The cumin hits immediately and punches your tongue with a slight sweetness, then the heat follows. Their medium level is on the higher end, but not completely unbearable. The lamb was the star of the show. It was cooked perfectly, tender, juicy, and seasoned on point. We had Garlic Naan, also. The naan was crunchy and had a nice garlic kick. It was fresh with good flavors. Tabla has a big menu with fusion options including traditional Indian dishes, sides and starters, Asian cuisine, pizza, and desserts. They are located inside an Indian grocery. The Fat Man says that Tabla Modern Indian restaurant is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin. read more

Good food. Friendly service. Fat friendly seating. Our server, who I believe was the owner, recommended the fries. I am not a fry person. I dont like potato. But I know that if the owner recommends a dish, unprovoked, you should probably try it. I definitely ate all of the fries, and then ate the toppings that were left on the plate. He was also really great to stand there for quite a while answering our questions. And I appreciated his honesty, because he was really frank about the fact that some dishes they were still working out the kinks on, and not to order them. We ordered almost everything in mild because we had a spice sensitive person at the table. It was mild enough for her to handle, but also still had enough spice for me to enjoy. I do look forward to going back and sampling dishes as various spice levels to see how hot is hot. This review is for the restaurant but I feel I should note that this restaurant is inside an Indian grocery. It has plenty of snacks and sweets if you are just looking to try something you havent had before. But if you like to cook Indian food at home they have everything you could ever need. And the prices are much lower than expected. The herbs/spices were considerably cheaper than Walmart. Overall, we only tried a few dishes from their vast menu, but what we had was really solid. Well we won't be making that mistake again. After so many recommendations, we finally decided to try and I'm so sorry I didn't just order my usual from Masala. There was oil sitting on top of the "hot & sour soup" - definitely not like anything I've ever had before. Didn't really like it but it was probably the best part of the meal. Raita, meh. Schezuan shrimp and noodles, lacking. Chicken tikka masala, so. Much. Oil. Couldn't eat it. Also this page on Yelp says they have a drive thru. They do not. Was not prepared to go in but that's my own fault. But part of why I chose them. Also, ordered online via DoorDash for us to pick up. Got notified it was ready, head to pick up, wasn't ready. I'd say it took 25-30 minutes longer to prepare after the notification of being ready. I'll never cheat on Masala again. Ever. read more

We've been twice now to Tabla and really wanted to love this place. Both times the service was great. However, I can't say the same for the food. Meat dishes contain small portions of meat and it's not the best quality meat either. I'm pretty sure their rice isn't basmati either, it was more like Chinese sticky rice. Also, the naan was off. It didn't taste like a fresh made piece of bread. Overall, this is more of a fast casual concept that in my opinion simply doesn't deliver. I really hope they read these reviews and consider making changes because I'd love to add Tabla to our list of favorites someday. read more

Giving 3 starts because we are extremely disappointed with the to-go portion size. Honestly it deserves 2 stars because of it, but I'm nice, so I'll leave it at 3 for now. Not sure if dine in portions are bigger but take out containers are very small and not worth our money. I would have maybe rated this restaurant 4 stars for flavor if the portions size were decent. Might give another try in future and update my review accordingly. read more

My wife and I visited for lunch. We were promptly seated and the staff waiting on us appropriately. Everyone was polite and answered our questions which were numerous. We had the vegetable Samosa as an appetizer and it was delicious. We had garlic naan bread which was very tasty. My wife had the butter based chicken curry with extremely mild spices and loved it to pieces and I had the black lentil dish whose name I cannot remember and it was among the best Indian dishes I've had In my life. I went with medium spicy and it was just enough heat. We will definitely be back in the future. The food was delicious. My wife and I had the Bhindi Masala and the Dal Tadka, both with medium spice, along with some Garlic Naan. The dishes had the right amount of kick to get your nose running. The server was nice but took a very long time to get to our table and take our order. It seemed like there was only one person handling all tables and the place was full. I'll definitely be back for the food but will need to pick a time when I'm not in a rush. read more

This restaurant was so good! The service was very friendly and very quick/frequent with refills. The contemporary menu was very easy to understand with very interesting fusion dishes. The decoration of the restaurant side was beautiful+colorful and everything was extremely clean and shiny. We stopped by the market side afterward and the cashier there was so helpful and offered explanations for things we haven't seen before. We came for the grand opening and every single thing we ordered was perfection! We started off with Kachori Chaat for an appetizer, and for for entrees we had the Malai Kofta and Paneer Taka Tak. The Chai was also excellent. The owner came by everyone's table and was very nice and personable and our server, Nigu was absolutely wonderful!! She was so sweet and friendly- excellent customer service!! Side note, if you're a bigger person, the booths are very spacious and comfy. We will definitely be back soon! read more

I had been hearing about this place and decided to try it during the snow storm. I ordered palak paneer medium spicy and garlic naan. The portion was generous. The garlic naan was buttery, flaky and nicely garlicky. The palak paneer was creamy and spicy but not too spicy with large chunks of paneer. It also came with a generous portion of basmati rice. The rice was perfectly cooked but could have used some salt in my opinion. I would order here again! read more

Tabla is a great option for us. They have kid-friendly dishes like pizza and chicken sandwiches, which allows us parents to enjoy our spicy Indian dishes such as paneer bhurji. Speaking of paneer bhurji, thats probably my go-to dish here. Huge portions and tastes amazing. Everything I've had here has been great.
