Visiting family in Novi, have been to this restaurant a few times but didn't get to review. This visit was just like the previous ones, great service with a big smile, friendly staff, clean , welcoming. We ordered Onion Rava Masala dosa, Ghee Roast Masala Dosa, Idli & Vada Combo for dining in as well as a Chicken 65 Biryani for take out. The food was delicious, their interpretation of South Indian food is different yet quite tasteful with the right flavours. Firstly - just coming in here, it smells so good! I really love the concept of a fast casual Indian spot as there aren't too many of them in this area. I love the location as it is in the Novi town center and has ample parking. This location I believe is also open until 10pm on weekdays? Which is a perk as so many spots shut down earlier. When you enter Masala Kitchen, there is a self ordering kiosk to your left- super easy to order and there are pictures of the menu items everywhere which are helpful and also may add to your cravings. You just order at the kiosk and grab a pager / enter the # of it and can sit and wait if you're doing grab and go like I did. I did notice this location has some specials going on for dining in and there is a lot of seating in here and the ambiance is warm/ clean which I liked. I got a masala dosa to go which was packed really well in a cute pizza style box with the chutneys and sambar and it was really tasty! The portion was good for the price. I would've liked a little more of the potatoes that go inside but the portion is definitely on par/ fair for what you get and I enjoyed it a lot. Baaaaaaby. I just walked out of here happier than a kid at the candy store. I was hungry and craved some chicken tikka masala so I looked up the nearest area and of course, Yelp recommended this place. I am so glad they did. I walked right in and the aroma was the first thing to hit me. I placed my order and sat down (I dined in). When the food was ready my device buzzed and I walked up. It was piping hot and smelled so good. Let's just say, you will not be disappointed. My chicken was tender and delicious, the rice was cooked to perfection and the samosas were flavor packed. The food blessed every part of my soul. Ohhhhh and I had to order my mango lassi. Now, not everyone's taste the same and I usually get mine from one of two places BUT Masala Indian Kitchen is definitely now a go to for the mango lassi. I really liked the concept of this fast causal restaurant, it's was clean and the interior is welcoming. We decided to order at the kiosk, took a buzzer and waited for our food to be ready which took about 5 minutes. The ordering process was very easy, I'm very happy that they clearly state vegan items so it's much easier to order. What I didn't like is the price for the food you get and the taste was just ok. I belive many of these items are already premade and they just heat it up after you order. 5 minutes is not enough to cook a dish but also the samosas were so greasy they were definetly double fried. I was very excited to try this place as I love Indian food but left dissatisfied. We had few street food snacks: Plantain Bajji Onion Corn Samosa Chiecken Kathi Rolls and I had one vegan entrée: Vegetable Khorma. The best of all were the samosas although as I mentioned VERY greasy. They were so oily I had to use some napkins to dry them out. The dough itself was soaked in oil. But the filling was very good and well seasoned. Plantains didn't have much of a flavor and the ratio dough to plantain was a little off. Kathi rolls were just ok and very small. Vegetable Khorma unfortunately didn't have much of a flavor. I don't think I'll be back considering the price point and the lack of flavor in most of the items we tried. read more

Please disregard my previous review. They have changed the format and this is now a traditional Indian restaurant. You still order at the counter but you get a buzzer and the food is prepared in the back. I liked my paneer sandwich. It came with a single serve pack of cheese Pringles which was a little strange. They offer a different $5 special every day which was too good a deal to pass up. There were several Indian people picking up food which was a good sign. Hope it all works out! read more

I'd give Masala a strong 3 star after giving it a second try. This time I ordered at the store for take out. They were very quick and the previous issues I mentioned seem to be resolved (mild is now a comfortable low heat and the naan was not burned like last time!). This time I ordered the chicken tikka masala and butter naan. Again no utensils included but packaging was wrapped well to prevent leakage. Service was very quick, I just wish the staff would be more friendly. I had to wait at the counter to order for a few minutes and when the employee finally came over, she just started at me with no greeting. If employee friendliness would have existed, this place would have 4 stars from me. 4-5 stars, rounding down. I love the masala curries here: vegetable korma (vegan) and vegetable mughalai (vegetarian) are the things I would return here for in the future. This visit, I tried their other items as well: The roast ghee plain dosa was good. I must admit, though, I haven't had a dosa before (!) so I can't compare it with anything. I enjoyed it, though. They had a neat pizza box-like-thing to help you carry the dosa home and that keep it (relatively) fresh. I'm sure the 30 minute drive back kind of made it less than how it was when it came off the griddle. I thought the egg dum biryani was 3/5 stars and could have had more freshness and flavor and spice-- but I'm probably biased from really liking a different and rich masala style Northern Indian vegetarian biryani from a Nepali-Indian place that is closer to where I live. read more

I came here for lunch today with a friend - she lives in South Lyon, and on Saturdays I'm in the Novi area visiting my parents, so we like to meet up in this area since it's convenient for both of us. My friend eats gluten-free and is also vegetarian and I saw Masala's menu online; it has a lot of GF and also veggie options, so we decided to try it out instead of Turmerican, a vegetarian Indian restaurant where we have eaten before. This is probably the first "fast-casual" Indian restaurant I've been to, and by that I mean you order at the counter or the kiosk, the employees will give you a buzzer, and then you come back when your food is ready. My old standby is usually chicken tikka masala, but I needed to avoid dairy today, so I ordered chicken korma instead. It came in a green sauce, which was interesting; when I've had it before, it's been in more of a yellow/beige sauce. I believe it was $13.99 and also came with rice. In addition, I ordered their garlic naan ($2.99), and a "fountain water," so my bill was about $20 with tip. My friend ordered a few different things - the fried jalapenos with peanuts, called Mirchi, which had lovely presentation; Idly, which were steamed rice and lentil cakes, served with chutneys; and Paneer Pakora, which were fried Indian cottage cheese cakes, and which were delicious - the Indian cottage cheese tasted more like a halloumi to me. My friend said everything was really good, too. In addition, they had some unique menu items, such as sandwiches, that you don't usually see; I saw on their website that they had a family deal, too, for $22-$27, where you get an appetizer, a larger entree, naan, and a dessert to share amongst 2 people (they had a deal for 4 or 6 people too) ... I'm not sure if that's a takeout-only deal or not, if it's not I might do that for myself next time and just have extra food to take home! I would come back here again - it's a bit expensive for non-waitservice Indian food, but it's on par with other Indian restaurants in the area for pricing. Next time, I would recommend trying more variety in their street food (which is what they're known for), and avoid the more mainstream, basic dishes such as butter chicken, tikka masala, etc. The service was pretty quick and effective. read more

Whenever I'm in the area, I always take note of this restaurant and think I'll drop by the next time. Well, after a friend dined here and recommended several dishes, the next time became the next day. The extensive menu was online with labels to help identify gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan dishes. I knew that I had to have samosas and naan bread, those were non-negotiables. Luckily, there were several varieties of the latter: plain, butter, and garlic. The bread was fluffy, tender, and delicious. The pastry dough of the samosas was delicate and flaky. However, the pea and potato filling was just okay. It was served with two sauces, one sweet and the other, mint. The Shrimp Tikki Masala was spicy and flavorful. Served with cumin rice, the creamy tomato curry was delicious. Unfortunately, I did not like the plantain bajji. It consisted of thinly sliced plantain in a rice and lentil batter. I thought there was just too much batter; it could be an acquired taste though. While dine-in was available, I chose to do take-out. I had a Zoom dinner with my sister. Ordered the chicken biryani, mild but end up spicy. The serving size was a lot for 2 people to share. I wish they added the naan, but have to pay extra $2. Highly recommend eating the naan by dipping it with the chicken tikka masala sauce. The lentil soup was not impressive. They need to add more lentil The restaurant dining area and restaurant is clean, and organized. Self service in the food and drinks. This is like the Indian version of Chipotle. The price is a bit pricey. Almost the same price as eating in a regular sit down restaurant, less the servers and giving the tip. Main entree may include rice but not the naan bread. I never really know what to expect when trying a new Indian restaurant, being from an Indian background, of course I've got my own inherent biases to consider... that said, I've been really pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy Masala Indian Kitchen! I happened to find Masala the old fashioned way (I drove past it a bunch on my commute), and decided to propose it as an option one day when some friends and I were looking for an Indian restaurant. I usually don't tend to go out for Indian food, since it's really hard to get to the level of homecooked food, but I'm glad I took the leap to try out the restaurant! The menu is vast... I mean vast as the ocean vast. It's a toss up as to whether or not this is a detriment to them, as it's going to mean that the average non-Indian person could get lost in the sea of options, but for the huge Indian demographic in Novi, this is a big plus as they have many niche dishes that cater to particular tastes. Additionally, they offer takeout, and even online ordering. For those that are particularly human conversation-averse, you can order directly from a kiosk while at the restaurant. I haven't had a bad dish in the time that I've been to Masala, but I'll wholeheartedly recommend their Biriyanis and their Chicken 65. The Chicken 65 isn't quite what I'm used to (different part of South India), but it's still good enough to make me want to go back just to have more of it. I could wax poetic about the merits of this restaurant, but if you've endured the long-suffering so far, I think you should do yourself a favor and give it a try for yourself. Order kiosks at the front door or the front counter. We ordered at the front counter. We ordered a plain dosa, gobi manchurian, channa masala, veggie korma, chicken tikka masala and a mango lassi. Pricey here. The gobi was soggy as heck, as if it had sat out for an hour or longer. I took it back to the counter and asked if they could make them crispy. The woman that took our order told me no. I said that's fine, I don't want it then. She said I could toss it out. I told her I don't want it as it is. She said that's their style. I asked for a refund. She said she couldn't give me a refund. I asked why. Her boss or manager stepped in and said he would give me a refund. I had to wait back in the order line to wait to get my refund. The guy asked me what I wanted. He already forgot he told me he would give me a refund. He then remembered a second later. He handed me $10. I went back to the table. My husband told me the gobi was $9.99 plus tax. I went back to the counter and the woman that waited on me wait for a little while so she could take care of carry out orders. I explained to her that the gobi was $9.99 and there was tax and the manager had only given me $10. I told her they still owed me $0.60. I wouldn't normally make a big deal about $0.60, but I feel like their poor quality of food doesn't warrant their prices here at all. The chicken tikka masala is blah, chicken chunks are big and the meat is dry. The veggie korma is not good either, not sweet, coconut flavor and some other seasonings that I don't like in dish at all. The channa masala is also very subpar as well. The best part of the meal was the dosa bread, the outer crust of it at least. The middle was was too soft and doughy and soggy, but that seems to be their theme for their food. The Mutter Paneer was VERY bland and disappointing, I would not recommend it to anyone. I had to combine it with some Tikka Masala sauce to eat it. The garlic naan & rice were good.
