Sometimes negative Yelp reviews are completely wrong, and other times (in the case of Masala King) they are 100% accurate. I got a Pulsd voucher a couple of months ago and finally went to dinner last night. Made a reservation for 6:15pm and the restaurant was completely empty (you really don't need one for this place). When I walked in with my boyfriend, the owner was sitting at the front of the restaurant with his gf/wife cuddling and I thought they were customers at first. The bar area looked weirdly empty too which is why we decided to get wine instead of cocktails. Got seated, ordered our 2 entrees, and 1 glass of white and 1 red (only because the Pulsd voucher included 2 cocktails or glasses of wine). The food is good. That was the only positive experience of the night. I've been to a couple of other restaurants using Pulsd and they have always been a good deal compared to a la carte. For some odd reason, Masala King was the worst value and we ended up paying MORE than what we normally would have. If we came without the voucher, it would have made more sense since the entrees were $23 + extra Naan for $6 and not order the terrible wine. The "vibe" of the place made me really uncomfortable and just plain weird throughout the entire night. We sat right next to the pink glitter wall and multiple times throughout the night the owner and the gf/wife would be in the back area and makeout. Can you not hide it better where a customer can't see you or just wait until you go home? The cook also just stood in the open area and kept staring uncomfortably at us the entire night. The glass of red (no idea what kind of red this was) and the Sauvignon blanc were quite literally the worst wine I've ever had at a restaurant. I am not a wine snob but the fact that they charge $15/glass for what I am assuming is about a $4 bottle of wine is ridiculous. Lastly, they DO CHARGE AN EXTRA FEE FOR USING A CREDIT CARD. I read that in a couple of reviews so brought it up with the gf/wife before checking out. Unfortunately, she had no idea how much the extra charge was, and the effort to try and find that out was too much (the owner apparently didn't know either) that we just ended up paying with a debit card. Kind of ridiculous that the people working there don't know this information... At the bottom of the menu, they state "We reserve the right to include 18% gratuity on any final bill based on our discretion. Groups of 4 or more will be charged 20% gratuity." If you feel a strong desire to visit this place, bring cash or a debit card, don't order the drinks, and don't sit where you get a view of the back area unless you like watching employees make out. read more

When this restaurant first opened several years ago I paid them a visit. After dining there, I decided not to return. Not remembering why, I made the decision, last week Thursday to try again for lunch This time I have definitely made the decision not to return. I arrived shortly before Noon, their opening time. They seated me at a table in the bar area. There are several tables there divided by curtains and another dining area in the back. I ordered lamb korma, basmati rice, poori, raita, and a sauvignon blanc (they only had 2 white wine choices by the glass). While I was waiting for my food and drink, a worker swept and mopped the floor around me. Couldn't they do this before opening or after closing? They had some monotonous, nondescript music playing which wasn't too bad. During the time I was there, i was the only patron with the exception of 3 gentlemen who came in for a business lunch. Between the front and back of the restaurant, they have a table for what appeared to be a buffet, but it wasn't operational during the time I was there. The food overall was not as good as expected. The wine was okay, but wasn't brought to my table until after the food arrived, which didn't take all that long. Most, but not all, of the lamb was tender, but there was too much lamb and not nearly enough sauce to pour over the rice. The rice seemed to be standard white rice, and not basmati. The poori ($7) was not what I know as poori. Usually it is a very puffy, flaky bread, but this was puffed a little, but mostly flat. They didn't have raita; so I ordered mango chutney. It was a small dish ($5), but tasted fine. Overall the food was disappointing and overpriced. I didn't really eat much of it (total waste of money). read more

I came back Wednesday, purely by accident, and had the most satisfying and delicious meat thali for lunch. I should say that I have always loved Indian food, but having come from a family where the food was good but very Western, my tastes are very broad and I like food spicier than might be expected, given how I grew up. I do know the spice limits of my friends, which the restaurant does pay attention to, but every person I have brought here....and now it is more than a dozen....has loved it. Every dish in the thali was just perfect. Drinks were made poorly - bar was basically empty. My friend ordered a beer and the glass came half full... my other friend ordered the Aarti drink and just had crushed pieces of cilantro?? (supposed to be mint leaves) floating in her drink. Ambiance was dead and be sure to bring a jacket since there's no good heating and you'll have to sit by the door if you aren't more than 8. For the bill, they tip themselves 20% if you're over 4 ppl. Complete rip off. Server didn't deserve $36. And on top of it, there's a surcharge for using your credit card bill which they don't tell you. 10/10 wouldn't recommend. You can find better quality food, service and ambiance for the price you're gonna end up paying. read more

Cheese and spinach naan is really good but the rest of what I tried was average. The staff were super nice. Had chili chicken at a street cart awhile back and came to try it here via mealpal. It was decent but not nearly as spicy or plentiful as what I had from that cart. The naan that came with the mealpal was fine. The meal was mostly white basmati rice. You get what you pay for. No problem. I wish the rice had some flavor to it and it would be better. I also wanted to try this place beyond mealpal. I also got several naan's and chatpati lasooni gobi. For the appetizer, the cauliflower was undercooked and very hard to eat. The sauce was fine but not as good as brick lane curry house's rendition. I would pass on this dish. I tried the cheese and spinach naan, the rosemary naan, and the chili & garlic naan. The c and s naan was super good. Highly recommended. The rosemary naan was half burnt on the bottom but the part that wasn't, was pretty good. The chili and garlic naan was pretty good. The heat built up after a few bites. I would recommend it. I went here today and got food to go for the second time in a week or so and guys - it is SO GOOD. Like really really good. Hands down the best Indian food I have had in the city. Not to mention how kind Kush was helping me with my order and greeting me while I was waiting a second for my food! I got the chana masala and the garlic roti. I'm literally blown away by how yummy the chana masala is - the flavor is unbelievable. I wanted a spicy dish, and Kush suggested this! Seriously so tasty I ate it all. He starting eating before I could get a picture He has gotten it both times now and loved it. Definitely a 10/10! BEST Indian restaurant I've found in NYC so far and clearly very underrated by NYers. I've been a regular customer here for a few months and I have never been disappointed. I even ordered lunch for a friend from here and she had to text me the next day asking where the food was from! Their Paneer Makhani, Lamb Vindaloo, and Malai Kofta were absolutely amazing. The flavors are incredible but I noticed that the texture of the paneer was not hard and chewy like some other restaurants, but perfectly tender. The Lamb Vindaloo had the perfect amount of spice (yes, it is very spicy but not to the point that you no longer enjoy the dish) and the meat was very tender. The Malai Kofta gravy sauce was so full of flavor and didn't feel heavy/oily at all. Even the garlic naan was some of the best that I've had, not tasting charred or doughy but light and a perfect complement to the main dishes. I highly recommend Masala King because I definitely won't be going anywhere else for Indian food! read more

Owner is unbelievably rude. 2nd delivery issue I've had with the restaurant and the owner thinks it's appropriate to be a total jerk on the phone. He also yelled at my delivery driver. Food is good, but shocked at the way the owner spoke to me. This is my first ever Yelp food review as well that's how shocked I was. Update: I'll bump up one star. The owner was nice when I called back to complain that after finally getting my food it was cold. That being said being nice only gets you so far. Second time coming to masala king. While the food was great as expected, the service was definitely strained. We stood at the front of the restaurant for five minutes (with a reservation) and eventually decided to seat ourselves. Ten minutes later and no one came to bring us water or take our order. After that, our office staff went back for lunch 2 additional times and the food was still very good. Not not shortly after that, in our 4th visit, we noticed that the quality and taste started changing in a not so good way. We still went back because we like Indian food but the food did not have the same flavorful taste as before. So we ended up not going there as much. Not sure what happened, maybe they brought in a different cook.... We still thought to give it another shot so we ordered food to be delivered. It is a family owned business and the son recently took ownership and has been doing tons of renovations. The place is gorgeous and has glitter walls (totally my style). The restaurant is also featuring local art pieces as part of their art exhibition in their dining area. The outdoor space is super cozy and one of the few places I went to where I was actually warm. They had heaters and an Encapsulated area that prevents wind from coming in. For drinks we tried the mango lassi and salty yogurt lassi. The yogurt lassi was interesting ( my husband loved it) - it was like a whipped yogurt drink. But oh my goodness the mango lassi was the best I've ever had! For appetizers we had the papri chaat which is a crunchy chickpea dish and it was so delicious. I loved the acidity with the onions and tomatoes mixed with the chickpeas. We also had the vegetable samosas which were not oily ( like most places) and had the perfect crunch. The main dishes we had were chicken Vindaloo, chicken Tiki masala, and saag paneer. All were amazing and so flavorful. We ordered the garlic naaan to accompany the dishes and If there is one thing you need to order - it is most definitely the naan. Holy moly it is biggest naan I've ever had and it's bigger than your face! It's not only big but it's crunchy on the edges and fluffy on the inside. Overall I loved this restaurant and would def come back- I see that they have bottomless brunch and would love to come back for that. There dessert looks amazing too- they currently have a collab with a local bakery for rose Bundt cakes. PS if you are a health care worker they offer 10% off discount on your meal. Don't go unless you want to be disappointed and ripped off. Firstly, tried making a reservation directly on their website, and kept getting error messages. Second, the servers are unattentive and just slow, had two ask for everything 2x such as the drinks, the Togo containers, and the bill. Third, They advertise 10% off the bill with a yelp check in and they never put it on the bill. Lastly, when you ask for the check, it takes forever and then automatically charge a credit card fee and auto-gratutity without informing you of this. My favorite Indian dish is chicken vindaloo - I try it almost everywhere I go and it's traditionally a very spicy dish. I ordered it spicy here but when it arrived it didn't taste like anything. Sent it back. This time I ordered yellow lentils with spinach - also spicy. They got the spice relatively right this time but once again the food was lacking flavor. As appetizers we got the chicken samosas and the lentil soup. The soup was SO sweet it just threw me off. Another dish that I've had before (at other places) and really enjoyed but this one wasn't great. To top it all off my boyfriend found a bug on his plate towards the end of the meal.
