We also got the Chicken Briyani. It didn't come with all the fixings like the Briyanis used to - no boiled egg, no fish cutlet. The rice was bland - almost like it was just rice and turmeric. The chicken curry was underseasoned like the rolls, not enough salt or flavour. The tandoori chicken leg was the only decent thing from this meal. The meal was disappointing, I regret buying it. Lastly, we got the viral banana pudding. I fell in looooove with banana pudding since I first had it from Confused Kitchen. This time, it wasn't bad but it wasn't the same. There weren't enough vaippan pieces and it wasn't as creamy as when it first came out. Wong's is a small, family-run, casual restaurant which specializes in Hakka cuisine. We were greeted and seated upon arrival by our friendly server. We quickly decided upon our choices: Chicken Pakoras; Chili Chicken Dry; Bombay Chicken and Chicken MaPo Tofu. Pakoras and Chili Chicken are, for me, go-to Hakka orders when trying out a restaurant for the first time. Wong's passed the Pakora and Chili Chicken tests with flying colors! The Chicken Pakoras were substantial, crispy and flavorful. Perfectly spiced, they were accompanied by a delicious cilantro sauce. Our waitress recommended adding some of the chili sauce if we wanted some additional heat. My son enjoyed them with the chili; I personally felt that they were perfect with just the cilantro. Similarly, the Chili Chicken was among the best that we've ever had. The chicken was pleasantly crispy without the greasiness that often plagues chili chicken, and again, Wong's nailed the spicing. Certainly, some diners would want more heat and, aside from the chili sauce at the table, you can request various levels of spiciness. The Bombay Chicken was a first for me, and I was not disappointed. The chicken pieces were moist and very flavorful, with the pronounced smokiness that wok cooking can produce. The smoky, spicy taste was very satisfying, especially on a winter day. The Chicken Mapo Tofu was unlike any that I've ever had, and it was surprising but excellent. I'm accustomed to Sichuan style Mapo Tofu, and Wong's version was different: milder, and without the pleasantly numbing sichuan peppercorns. The result was a milder dish, but so well flavored that, while different, it retained the comfort of savory meat sauce and the soft tofu cubes. The texture was perfect, and it was complemented by the steamed rice, which came with our orders. The service was friendly, kind and helpful, and Chef Wong himself came out to ask about our meal. Happily, we were able to give him sincere compliments! We look forward to returning to try some of the helpful suggestions offered by our server. A very friendly gentleman brought out the menu and some tea as we scanned the well-priced lunch menu. Since we both came for chili chicken, we tried 2 versions of this lunch special; one on crispy chow mien (extra) with a soft drink and one with hot and sour soup and steamed rice. The lunch combos come with a spring roll and a choice of soup or a soft drink and was around $14. Our food came out pretty quickly and it was piping hot which is always great! The hot and sour soup was very good and it actually had a nice kick to it with chunky tofu and veggies morsels. My friend took a spoonful and found it to be too spicy for her, but I have a decent heat tolerance and it tasted perfect for my palate. The chili chicken on our lunch looked equally good, but fell short as the chicken pieces were small, dry and tasted of old frying oil which was unfortunate because the gravy was so good. We made a reservation in advance. The inside is small dark yet cozy. No real interior design but that's typical for a Hakka Chinese restaurant in Scarborough. There were two other groups already eating before we all arrived. The staff were very nice and pleasant and even adjusted all their portion sizes so that instead of serving 13 pieces as the default they would give us 14 so that everyone had one. We ordered the wonton noodles, crispy breaded shrimp balls, chilli chicken, chilli fish, preserved lime fish, vermicelli, and white rice. Overall, the flavours were good but nothing blew me away. This is your standard Chinese Hakka restaurant but with very accommodating service.
