When there are only two Indian restaurants in town, you're just happy you have them. I like both of them although neither are buffets which is unfortunate. Masala is the most classy of the two and less traditional. They don't even have mango laasi. It's served Chipotle-style. There is no table service. There are a bunch of white kids serving the food so you kinda wonder if it's gonna be good. But it is good and really spicy. It's not as good as the Indian Grill and Curry House on Broadway. And it's more expensive, especially if you want to try everything. I was confused how best to order. I think getting the large plate with three options, rather than the bowl with two options is the best deal. You get a choice of an additional side like samosa whereas if you choose the cheaper bowl and add that on, it's more expensive. The Samosas were my favorite item. Beyond that, the food was not memorable. But it is made with quality ingredients. The naan was good too. We'll be back, but if an Indian buffet comes into town, oh man, that would create some awesome competition! read more

He spoke about how each dish had a unique and distinct flavor (butter chicken, another chicken dish as well (I think), and the sag paneer). Fresh, homemade Indian food at its best!! I love that they have kale and brown rice as options. I always have 1/2 kale and 1/2 brown rice for my base. Then you may choose 1 to 3 hot items. The restaurant is spotless, the staff is friendly and the price is so reasonable it almost makes me feel guilty because of the supreme quality. There aren't exactly options for Indian food in Missoula, but Masala does a nice job. I highly recommend giving the dishes a try before committing, as sometimes I've found a few things to be hit-or-miss. Even so, it's one of my favorite lunch stops. Their vegetarian options are so good that I often go that route even though I eat meat. It's a delicious way to eat some veggies! The only real downside is that the restaurant itself is very small and there is limited seating. It's quick and easy when it's not completely full, but can be frustrating during normal meal times. It's a testament to good food, but is still kind of a bummer. read more

I have had a lot of Indian food, I am very familiar with the spices and techniques. I have eaten here on two occasions and it was absolutely terrible. First of all the rice to curry ration was extremely rice heavy. So much so that there was not enough curry to even cover the rice. The curries I had were bland and had little to no seasoning both times I was in, it was the same. So at least they are consistent. I would not recommend this restaurant to any one... ever.. I am embarrassed for any Indian citizens that reside in Missoula. Masala is not a good representation of their cultural foods. Which are incredible. read more

Some nice people work there are some people that are not so nice not so really good customer service skills. Especially if you're older and maybe promote a certain political belief by what you will wear and they tend to ignore you. I have seen that happen they even would stare at my hat. I've never had Indian food that was this bland!! This place is a joke. Don't come here. Indian food is supposed to be rich in flavor, full of spices, and a lot of spicy dishes! I don't understand why people give this place 5 stars. Maybe they're locals who've never left this state and have never had good Indian food. The raita was such a disappointment, it tasted so nasty. We found Masala from googling. I thought this was your typical Indian / Nepalese food. The food taste nothing like Indian food. Bland, lack of flavor, incorrect spices in the dishes we ordered. If you never eating real Indian vegetarian food, you might think is good since you have nothing to reference. You can't travel and take some eastern cooking courses and expect to sell such exotic foods. It's also part of one's culture. Most Indian restaurant are run by Indians themselves where I live and many other big cities in the U.S. Americans just don't have the taste. Prices are okay: 2 entrees with rice, 2 halves of naan and a kombucha= $13.50..... $1.50 for each half of naan seems a little silly. But an extra $1 for brown rice over basatmi? Boo. I ordered the mixed lentil curry and beef vindaloo. The lentils were much too sweet and the beef tasted more like grandma's stew.....except grandma does it much better. The mix of flavors in each just seem a bit....off. Like there's likely a young Caucasian chef in the kitchen trying to do something "interesting" with traditional recipes. I have 2 complaints and a lot of compliments. The place has pretty good food, and compared to the non-existent competition in Missoula, well it can't really be beat. I like going in, but there is one thing that keeps me from going. It really messes with my stomach. I don't know why, but every time I go in I leave with a stomach ache. It's the strangest thing. They assure me the items are vegan, and they seem to be fine to me, but I always leave with an upset stomach. It's strange. The food does taste good though, but it doesn't measure up to how great an Indian Place truly can be. I believe it's partly because of the lack of a restaurant style and being able to get what you want everytime. Personally, my favorite Indian dish is Aloo Matar, (Peas and Potatoes), and whenever I can order it, I do. However, I cannot get that at Masala. TL;DR yeah it's good. read more

Been to many Indian restaurants across the northwest. This has been the worst place by far, and if I were wanting to introduce somebody to Indian food, I would absolutely not bring them here. First of all, the service is terrible. 5 people working, they all paid us dust. We finally got helped by a tall man with dark hair who was off putting and unfriendly. Then, we got helped by a big lady with glasses, who obviously did not want to be there. Condescending aura. Tipped $10 on a $30 order, didn't even get a smile or a thank you. Nonetheless, I was excited to try the food. That was, until I bit down into the hard rice, mushy underdone chicken, and bland sauce. Indian food is supposed to be flavorful. You could not taste anything. No garlic, no turmeric, no curry powder, NOTHING! The chicken was absolutely disgusting, to the point where I immediately felt as though I needed to throw up. This is without a doubt one of the best places to eat in Missoula (and my personal favorite). The curry is always delicious (especially the saag paneer and coconut pork curry) and the portions are generous for the price. I get a very filling lunch/dinner for $7-10 and have also split a two curry bowl with another person and left perfectly content. I can't speak to the authenticity of the flavors, but I would say it is consistent with other restaurants that claim to be authentic. This is a casual restaurant with fast counter service and fresh food. Not exactly the right place for a "fancy" dinner but definitely a great place for a regular meal. The naan was a bit dry and unlike naans I have had in the past. Not disagreeable but not memorable. You also get two sauces among ten choices. Several were quite tasty and distinctive. Plenty of choices both vegetable or meat based. None of our choices were particularly memorable. I was surprised to see no lassis on the menu. A mango lassi is such a good compliment to Indian food.
