Definitely a lunch spot to add to your normal lunch rotation. Good food that is reasonably priced and tasty. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Even opened early one day when I showed up at 10:50 ready to eat, not knowing that they didn't open until 11. I usually go with the Massaman chicken and always am glad I did. read more

I'm a picky b*tch when it comes to Thai food. That being said, Masaman is an answered prayer for decent Thai fare in Birmingham. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about but it is clean and reminiscent of a simple soi kitchen in BKK. The staff are uber friendly and are happy to chat or offer suggestions. The food is served in to-go containers (the only aspect of this place where this is room for improvement). I'd love to sit down here, even to a pyrex plate and cheap flatware, and not eat out of a box... crossing my fingers this will be a reality in time. The food is top-notch: all the right flavors, a healthy level of spice and high quality ingredients. Bonus: the food is well spiced to begin with and there is no patronizing single shake of the red pepper dispenser when you ask for 'thai spicy'... they turn up the heat in a genuine way if you are so bold. I love the Nom Tok salad - healthy, flavorful and authentic. I'll be back to try a curry or two, the sticky rice and some of the other 'thai salad' options. This is a really good take-out Thai restaurant in Vestavia; I definitey enjoyed the Thai fresh basil rolls we had as an appetizer and the entrees we got were both pretty good (Ginger root and Pad Kee Mow), but I think we were expecting something a little spicier. The location is super convenient and the service was fast (we called in our order and picked it up ~25 minutes later on a Friday night) and very friendly. Great place! I ordered take out on a whim after leaving the grocery store on my lunch break. Had the masaman chicken and LOVED it. Was extremely fresh. I agree with a lot of other people that it is some where you would probably want to have takeout. The staff is super sweet but the inside just isn't the most appealing to sit down and enjoy a meal. First, I will admit I do not often write reviews but my experience here was awesome. I have been looking for tasty, flavorful Thai food in Alabama for a while. These folks do it right! For starters, this is a THAI restaurant. They do not sell sushi or Chinese Food or Japanese Food. That makes all the difference because they have one style of cuisine that they do very well. I had the Pad Thai(of course) with a little added spice. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the chicken was moist. The sauce was flavorful without being too salty. I literally picked up that little cup of coconut soup and drank it! It was that good! The owners were very nice and they even offered me a sample of a dish I was curious about. I will warn you, though. This is not a fancy restaurant. It is primarily takeout . The utensils and silverware are plastic and served to go. If you are looking for a fancy date venue, this is not your spot. If you, however , want some authentic tasty Thai food served with a smile, don't past by this one! read more

We came to Birmingham looking for housing before the semester starts in the fall. During our hunt, we stopped here for lunch and were not disappointed! It's a small place, but the food is phenomenal and the workers are so polite! This will definitely be my go-to for Thai when I move! Just keep in mind that the facility is small, seating about 15, and the food is served in styrofoam boxes with plastic utensils. So, not the best for big parties or fancy occasions - but still awesome for great food! read more

Went there yesterday for a quick lunch. Ordered the pad Thai. First came a cup of coconut soup. I do not eat it, but it did smell lovely. The pad Thai was wonderful! Very fresh, with a lot of chicken and shrimp in it. The vegetables were crisp and delicious, with the presentation very appetizing. It's sauce was delicious! A very generous portion. Place was very small, only six tables, but very clean. The only suggestion I would make is to use plates for in dining, instead of styrofoam containers. Will definitely go back again. read more

This new Thai place has very good food served in a clean and neat environment. There are only six two-top tables, but that did not present a problem the day I went. I was able to order and sit down immediately. It probably would be very hot with the kitchen in the same space if not for two fans blowing on high into the Lilliputian eating area. I was comfortable, though. They had shades on the front windows to quell the blazing sun. I wondered, though, if they had a properly functioning air conditioner. Food was served fresh and hot as they prepare it after order, but quite fast. I could really taste the coconut in my sauce and in the accompanying soup. I liked that and the slight sweetness and spiciness that was present in my dishes. Personally, I would like more rice and could do with less meat. That said, this was a delicious meal that was not overfilling. They do serve in Styrofoam with a plastic fork and spoon only. I always wish these places that use disposable serving utensils would at least include a plastic knife. read more

I love this place. I always get the same things: tom yum soup and chicken panang, so I can't review the whole menu. Those two items, though, are consistently delicious. I ask for the chicken panang to be a little extra spicy, because I think a good curry should make my eyes water. Almost as important as the taste of the food, though, is the quality of the service. As others have noted, this place is very small and as a result I have always gotten takeout. When I walk in, my daughter and I are always greeted with an enthusiastic smile. The woman at the counter, who I believe is the owner, remembers my order and is genuinely friendly with me and my 3 year old. The food is made to order but never takes too long. It's packaged well and I've never had it spill or make a mess despite my long drive home. My only complaint about this restaurant is that it isn't closer to my home. read more

Masaman changed my outlook on curry. I was not a fan until I sampled the varieties they offer. All the flavors are perfectly mixed together with the right amount of creaminess that I wanted to lick my Styrofoam plate in the restaurant. Wonderful food. Great service. I love this place. I've eaten lunch and dinner hear many times. Every time has been great. Very consistent. I am a meat eater but the tofu panang is my go-to. Keep in mind this is a take out joint. There are tables but you get your food as take out. You may eat there but there is no service. It will not disappoint. read more

This was a decent plate of pad thai after a five hour drive from New Orleans. It wasn't my favorite Thai food I have ever had, but I wasn't mad about it. I got spicy pad thai which was pretty good and my friends were also happy with their pad thai. My friend also got the curry which she said was decent. The best Thai restaurants are the little hole in the wall places. Anyone who says differently eats at Cracker Barrel and we all know that Cracker Barrel is bland and gross. Very nice and attentive staff. I had the Masaman Curry with shrimp and my friend had the Pad Kee Mow with beef. They were both wonderful. We took turns sharing until the plates were almost empty. We wanted to love this place because it's in our neighborhood and we love takeout Thai. The food is not bad quality at all. But twice we have brought food home to discover disturbing objects embedded in the food. The first time there was a metal wire running through a piece of tofu - not mixed in with the stir fry, it was embedded in the tofu. Maybe it was there when they bought the tofu, but it was very obvious and should have been noticed by the cook. We complained and the woman at the counter was very apologetic and gave a refund. We gave them the benefit of a doubt and have ordered several meals over the months since. But last night several of my tempura green beans had metallic strings (they looked like tinsel) within the fried batter. Very obvious and disturbing. You couldn't miss it - tinsel flowing out of tempura batter. I bagged them and took them in today to show them. Same woman at the counter. "Oh that's just the strainer. It's from the strainer." Not a good enough response for me, as if knowing where it came from made it ok. She apologized, but we'll drive the extra mile for Surin from now on. read more

Service is super-friendly and personalized - we hadn't been there for a few months, but the server actually remembered what we ordered the last time we had been there. Food is ok. I think because they recently opened, they are cooking conservative Thai. I asked for Thai spicy and my 5 year old would have been ok with the spice. Be bold. Real Thai has more flavor and spice. Bring it! Restaurant is clean and, as others have said, very small. More of takeout-Thai. I'm planning to try one more time. If the flavor and spice aren't considerably more noteworthy, I'm not going back. I want the real deal Thai. We are currently lacking in Birmingham. Fill the space--please!! read more

This is our new "go to" Thai restaurant in town! The owner & the chef are simply lovely people who remember regular customers' orders...which I appreciate. The food is just delicious - either savory or spicy or sweet - whichever is appropriate, depending on the Thai dish ordered. Love it as we do, there are a few negatives: -The restaurant only has about 5 small tables, so it's mostly a take out place. -They don't have a liquor license & you can't bring your own wine. -The entree portions are a little small for the price charged. -If you do get a table & eat there, don't expect ambiance or anything other than plastic plates, bowls, glasses & utensils. With this said, I do recommend that you give it a try...you'll enjoy the delicious Thai food & fabulous customer service...just overlook the small negatives. read more
