He was mostly independent and mobile for the first 3+ years. He went down to the dining room for meals and enjoyed going to the cafe for snacks. He enjoyed hanging out in the living areas and chatting with other residents. Sadly, Bob did not take advantage of the many activities offered. However, he made extensive use of the shuttle to Kaiser. The shuttle was a life savior to him and also my husband and I. The facility is kept very tidy, clean and pleasant. Many of the staff have been at this facility for 8, 12, 17 and even 23 years. Bob fell on May 31, 2025 and went on hospice. He was 100% bedbound from June 2 - Dec. 29th. The staff took excellent care of him. They changed his diapers and kept him clean. They watched for bed sores. They took extra care and treated the two very small, minor pressure sores before they became an issue. The food service staff took extra care to send his favorite foods to his room. I was Bob primary family contact. The Carlton Staff was extremely kind and supportive to me and our family. We are grateful to the compassionate team at Carlton Senior Living Community, where Bob was cared for with kindness and dignity. Each day, a dedicated group of caregivers and staff made his life brighter and more comfortable. We found Carlton's cost for studio, one bedroom and two bedroom rent which includes the room, all meals and snacks, housekeeping weekly, laundry weekly, electric, cable, internet, activities, parking, transportation to appointments and weekly outings plus use of game room, TV room, and small fitness room to be quite competitive in the area. Our parents are independent but staff check in on residents at each meal whether they have been in the dining room and if not, they swing by the apartment to make sure all is well. My mother was recently ill in the middle of the night and contacted me and I called the care staff to check to in on her and call 911. That is peace of mind for me as I live across town or could be away on a trip. If care is needed, there is a menu of services in increments and you can add on only what you need and remove when/if its not needed. If anyone has needed care for their loved one and they still live at home, try to find a care giver for short periods of time, they usually want committed hours. On the books nursing aide/assistant care runs $40/hr and up or $30/hr off the books and up so if you need more than short spurts, in home care adds up quickly. Then add that to costs for their own home expenses, etc and you will see Carlton is very cost effective plus having care is immediate, if needed. Carlton like many similar communities are private pay. Corporate and site management are very responsive and actively involved with residents regarding issues or changes they would like to see in their "home". They work with the residents and have a formal and informal path to improve and/or problem solve. I have found them very accommodating and been very impressed. I have gotten to know many staff and residents. There are quite a number of long time staff. I have found staff to be a very warm and caring and the environment clean, pretty, and inviting. Maintenance staff are responsive to residents and accommodating to needs. Carlton has enriched and expanded our parents social lives while giving us peace of mind. We are onsite visiting 2-4 times a week and have had many great meals there. There is an adjustment period for many residents depending on the prior living situation and personal experiences. My recommendation is to be proactive and make this type of move before a crisis arises. My husband and I are very happy with our experience with Carlton Senior Living. Is the community perfect, no. No one is perfect but they do a great job. My family is safe and in a supportive environment. I appreciate that when something does arise, they are responsive, it is acknowledged and resolved to the best of their ability.

The nurses see this but don't say anything--they are very nice. However, lately, whenever I visit, I encounter a Vietnamese woman who works in my mother's room; she isn't a nurse but assists the patients. Nowadays, every time I come here to visit my mother, it feels like visiting a prisoner in a detention center. Ms. L. constantly grills me about what food I've brought and what ingredients are in it; she doesn't just ask upon our first meeting--she scrutinizes every time I was here with every single item I bring for my mother. Last week, I brought my mother a small piece of chicken pie (3x3 inches) and three-quarters of a cup of Jell-O--a very small portion, certainly not a full lunch. As soon as she saw me, she began questioning me relentlessly: "What is that food? Did you put chocolate in the Jell-O?" "What kind of pie is it?" She is neither a nurse nor a nutrition expert. She questioned me as if interrogating a prisoner. That wasn't the end of it; after I finished feeding my mother, she came back and asked, "Does your mother eat a lot or a little?" I replied, "Why do you ask that?" She said, "If your mother eats a lot, I'll have her lunch cut off." I felt like she was flaunting her power over my mother and me; I felt we were being abused. It was just a small 3x3-inch piece of cake and three-quarters of a cup of Jell-O--my mother only ate half of it--yet she threatened to cut off her lunch. Who was she in this rehab facility? How much authority did she have to throw her weight around like that? This is America, not Communist Vietnam. At 12:05 PM, I saw a nurse hand Ms. L. a small carton of milk (I guessed it was a nutritional supplement drink like Ensure)for my Mom. I was even more surprised when I saw that, instead of placing the carton of milk on the table--which was completely clear and uncluttered--she stashed it away in the drawer of my mom bedside cabinet !!! When I finally reached her case worker I was told to call her social security worker, Carol. Carol told me to meet with her physical therapy team and nurses to understand her care and discharge plan. After the PT team did not show for the appointment, I rescheduled. They met and said that Carol was managing the discharge plan. The. I was told to speak with a nurse. I was constantly sent from one person to another. They seemed very disorganized and I couldn't accomplish anything over the phone and when I was onsite, it still took forever to find someone that knew what was going on. As for care, she contracted pneumonia while there. They tried to discharge her with it, which her insurance objected to. They told me that she would be going home in 48hrs. Then she died. While the EMT's were trying to revive my mother, a nurse from the facility called and asked me what I wanted to do with her body. They didn't bother getting this info upfront and I was forced to send her to their default mortuary. When I called to ask to collect her belongings they told me they had to find them. They may have been thrown out. She was 72. Walked 8 miles every day. This is not a place to send loved ones.
