Wonderful customer service! I'm so glad I found this shop on google. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by friendly faces. I have not played tennis in years, and I want to start playing again. So I asked for racket recommendations. I was shown shown a great selection. I chose the one I thought would be best for me. I had the shop also string the racket for me. I really don't get the one and two star reviews. If you check my other reviews, you'll see I'm not an easy grader - but I give Mason high marks. An NYC stalwart, I'd never visited and was a bit concerned after reading the negative reviews. My wife is taking up the game and I'm getting back into it after a decade of not playing. Mark Mason could not have been more helpful to both of us in racket selection, explaining the differences between manufacturers and models, he hooked my wife up with an excellent racket at the price of an ok one because it was the last remaining. Helped me choose the right model for my game and skill level, talked me out of the too big grip size I initially gravitated to. I found the staff to be friendly, helpful and completely "soft sell." Had a nice experience. The guy re-gripped my racket in minutes. Was very professional and didn't get any problems at all. The Asian lady at the cashier was also very helpful and extremely friendly. Doesn't matter who Iam in the squash world This was my Worst restringing racket experience I have ever encountered in my life... I asked the guy to make the racket on a low and a very loose tension 10.5 kg , I Come the next day he gives me the Rachel with a broken garment and not even offering to redo it ( very unprofessional) also the tension was horrible and extremely stiff. I asked if they can do it again then the very bad vibed girl answered with all confidence that I will have to pay another 40 dollars for that !!!! I have been restringing rackets and playing sqaush for 24 years and never encountered anything that unprofessional and lacks that much of common sense or skill to keep their customers ... they didn't even offer something life maybe half the price for redoing it or anything like that !!! BEST TENNIS STORE !! Don't waste your time any where else in the City for tennis needs or in Fairfield County area for that matter ! Hop on the train and come here ! It is so worth it . Reading through the reviews after my visit today, I recognize the attitude. I came to pick up my new tennis racquet. The stringer helped me select the racquet last week and recommended a string and tension. It was also blue and we noted it would complement the colors in the racquet. A fun touch. What was actually strung was a clear color, and I pointed it out at the cashier. They said the ticket did not specify blue and that I should have indicated that I wanted blue. So it was my fault. They offered to restring but I didn't think it was worth another trip to midtown or the waste. They just didn't understand after repeated attempts at logic that it was their responsibility to get it right. I don't know how their internal process works and how they communicate amongst themselves; I'm guessing the stringer who spent time with me in selecting the racquet, the grip, the string and tension wasn't the one who actually worked on it. And let's talk about Mason who offered no help last week other than get the sneaker box from the back. Getting the size right is important and I was probably there for 15 minutes trying on two sizes. All I got was an impatient "so you gonna get it?". That's why people shop online. read more

Just stopped in to pick up some new grip and have been meaning to write up a review for you guys for a while. I would be lost without Mason's. As a competitive player, this is my go to spot for anything tennis. Sometimes I stop in just to talk to Tony who I've purchased my two racquets from. If you don't mind dropping about $90 to get two racquets restrung then this is your place. After a long summer of tennis, you will undoubtedly be filing for bankruptcy. They do have a decent selection and the service/turnaround is great, so I will give it three stars. I would have to recommend Paragon for your tennis needs. Their selection is unparalleled in NYC and while you're picking out a new racquet, you can also procure a tennis permit for access to all of nyc's public courts ($100 for the season). Tennis is an expensive hobby so the $100 is a bargain. The only problem is...everyone knows this and you have to deal with the throngs of tennis junkies that flock to Central Park. read more

Masons tennis store had a lot of great tennis stuff from great racquets to branded apparel and more. They had a lot of men's, women's clothing from nike, Adidas, Fred perry and many more as well as that they had a lot of junior apparel ranging from nike-Adidas. Masons tennis store was like tennis heaven with everything tennis even towels, grips and strings. It was also great to see all the rackets, shoes and clothes the pros use in my size. The shoe selection was also very impressive with bright colors, new styles and big brands. They have all the tennis essentials too. In my opinion this is the best tennis store in NYC! read more

Very disappointed with my experience at this store. I've read online how helpful the staff is, but one should never believe the hype. I explained to Mason's staff that it'd be my first "real" racket, yet they rushed me through the process. They tried to get me to buy extra add-ons, special strings, etc. to my racket because "Nadal uses it." They definitely took advantage of my inexperience in racket-shopping. When the floor sales person recommended an add-on, the cashier automatically wrote it on the receipt to charge me. I hadn't even said YES yet!!! I was still trying to learn what the add-on was! "Oh, I can just scratch it off," cashier says. Really? How about just waiting til I answer. I ended up paying $250 for a racket I knew nothing about. Cashier ignored my questions about their demo program and about the customizations to my racket, too busy tacking on items to my receipt. These people were fast talkers only concerned about a sale. I literally spent 90 seconds in this store. Walked out confused as to how I paid so much in so little time with so very little assistance. This store is clearly only for the more experienced racket-shopper. I've received better service at a Sports Authority when I bought a $25 off-the-shelf racket. They do have a nice selection of apparel I must say. But I'd rather play on the tennis courts butt-naked than spend another dime at Mason's. read more

They have a good selection of apparel, and a decent selection of shoes. I had a question about a tennis racket, so I asked one of the staff members. He took one good look at me, answered my question, and turned his back. It was pretty rude. I had another question but I decided not to ask it, since it did not seem like he wanted to entertain any further questions. Another woman asked him about a racket, and he happily chats with the woman. I do not feel welcome here, and I would NEVER go back to this store. Bought a pair of shoes here. I wore them for 20 minutes and had to leave the court because they dug into my feet so badly. I am a competitive tennis player and have never experienced shoes like this. I brought them back and asked them if they/or the company could do anything. They said no. I would not ever go here again. I came in here looking for tennis apparel and was not disappointed. They had all the brands I was looking for including Ralph Lauren. It was pricey- luckily for me I can wear the children's sizes and I was able to save a bit of cash. They were very helpful and again the variety of women's tennis apparel was great. I have bought tennis shoes at Mason's before, and recently returned for my next pair. They were charging full price ($135) for last season's Nikes -- so I asked if they would match the Tennis Warehouse price of $100 (something Paragon does, by the way), and the friendly guy helping me called the owner after verifying the TW price, and he was told no, they would not discount the shoes. Walked in when I saw a game on their television screen. The staff was really nice and helpful while my brother was looking for tennis sneakers. They didn't have what he wanted in stock but they tried to find something for him. I haven't had my racquet strung here but they seem suprisingly friendly. Very good selection but an excellent group of staff members. I spoke with a man named Tony and he was not only very knowledgeable but one of the friendliest people I've ever met. They are the only store I've found that stocked RF hats, the Swiss Olympic Polo, and Nike Tennis T-Shirts. The selection far exceeded what I had expected and was a welcomed surprise for me because I had looked all over Vancouver/NYC/the Internet for a RF hat. I walked into Mason's pinched for time and asked Tony if he could have a new racquet strung up for me in an hour. He said he'd have it done in 20 minutes, and he did. I told him if the racquet played well I'd come back the next day and buy another one. I did, and Tony remembered me, strung up another, and even threw in a t-shirt and a can of balls. As an avid Manhattan tennis player, I would have to agree with Karen's review. Mason's is the go to place for me for the following reasons. They always have a full selection of tennis clothes; Mark Mason, the owner, is extremely knowledgeable and can help with racquet and string selection; the service is personal and efficient; also has lots of accessories that make for unique presents during the holidays. At Paragon or Sports Authority, you'll never be able to find someone as knowledgeable as Mr. Mason. HIs prices also don't seem higher to me than any other retail place. And even if they were, buying the wrong racquet or using the wrong strings & tension could give you tennis elbow which will eventually cost you a lot more than a few extra bucks. I bought there tennis shorts as a birthday present for my son. It's not a problem to buy shorts, but it's hard to find nice trim cut, similar to what Federer is wearing. All the shorts are so baggy and my son is slim. It was a birthday present, so I wanted the shorts to look perfect. We found a nice cut, so-called Federer's by Nike, bought them, but later had to change the size. That day happened to be during the US Open second week and the store was very busy already at 10:30 in the morning. They did not have the size that we needed in that style and the owner was really rude. I ended up exchanging the shorts for another model that I did not like that much only to get out of there quickly. All my questions about if it is possible to order the same model (we were willing to wait!) were left unanswered. We live in the neighborhood and the store is in a convenient location for us for restringing the rackets and buying tennis balls on a regular basis, but I don't think I will go there again. read more
