Chelsea Piers Sky Rink was a major part of my hockey life in New York…read more It is the only rink in Manhattan, and the location is hard to beat, especially if you live downtown. I used to ride a Citi Bike over, but they also have ample parking, and being right off the West Side Highway made it accessible even for people coming from less convenient parts of the city. It is by no means cheap, but the facility is well-maintained, with two sheets of ice and a serious adult hockey setup. The west rink is especially nice if you get a daytime slot, with views of the Hudson River. I played here for 7 years during my 13 years living in New York, across both Division 1 and Division 4. I always had fun and met a lot of solid people through the leagues. At the time, the rink was run by Dan Genovese, who was super cool, a great hockey player, and someone who ran the leagues and facilities fairly. Adult hockey can get chaotic quickly, and Chelsea Piers generally felt organized, competitive, and well-managed. For a few years, I also stored my equipment in a locker in the Canadiens' locker room, which made skating there much more convenient. Chelsea Piers has plenty beyond hockey, including a driving range and other athletic offerings, but I was really a customer of the ice rink. From that perspective, it is one of the better sports facilities in Manhattan: expensive, yes (like everything in NYC), but clean, organized, well-located, and a great place to keep playing competitive adult hockey in the city.

Back to almost normal operations, they held the Mid-Atlantic competition this year again and had a…read morelot of competitors join from across the nation. Wow the ice wasn't the best of conditions and it was really humid and somewhat foggy inside, at least they gave enough time for competitors to have a 15 minute warm up roughly before their sessions. They moved all the benches for some vendors and to get more space inside.

What exactly do you think a rabid Mets fan is going to think of and rate this glorious, energetic,…read moreexciting temple to all things Mets, featuring the debut of the New York or Nowhere Mets collection, fusing my love of my favorite city and favorite team? Sure it's a lot about selling merch--cool, unique, not available everywhere merch at that though--and the prices are not cheap, but they also took great pains to incorporate artwork and interactive exhibits in the back, and I think have hosted events here with Mets and SNY personnel. Like the now impressive team and its wonderful stadium, this is another smaller but appreciated example of the care and thought and excellence--and love of all things Mets and the desire to celebrate that love--that have completely transformed this franchise under the auspices of the only billionaire we should allow to survive The Purge, our beloved Uncle Steve.

Beyond the Mets ware, (including with new uniform designs,) collectibles, plush and other stuff, you'll find other reasons to go and check it out! For out-of-town fans of other teams, you can have a lot of fun too! There's a "Mets Match Your Swing" motion capture cage that's great! A big screen Mets gaming wall! A mini Mets Museum with memorabilia! Mets House also offers ticket deals and victory celebrations! (Let's go, Mets!) Absolutely big on Mr. Met, and there's a lot of there with him! You'll also find items with Mrs. Met too! (Need to eventually replace my well-worn super favorite Mr. Met cap sported in my Yelp profile photo, so looking for options!) Check out their website for events, like the free mochi offered during my visit. They also have Apple live podcast recordings at Met House's "The Dugout" studio. Sundays are geared to families, including Mr. and Mrs. Mets visits when there isn't a home game! Cey Adams has created a large logo art installation wall perfect for your selfie to share! The only thing I didn't see, which should be in the Mets House line up, Grimace! Thank you, Mets, for making this in-town fan stop happen! Ya gotta believe!
