This place is fine if you're just looking for a one time need a massage right now kind of place. But they're not a day spa - no locker room, no robe, no sauna or shower. So because of that I think it's over priced. You get the correct pricing ($69) with the membership but only get that if you're really good at planning your visits. Canceling is a pain and I lost 3 visits that I already paid for. I was also super disappointed when I booked two hot stone massages but both times the therapist wasn't prepared for it so I could only get a regular massage. She blamed the desk and the desk blamed her. No one offered me any compensation. read more

I wrote my first review after initially signing up for their membership...after about a year, I think I've gotten a full range of experiences to provide a better update. Just a few things to note about membership: For a busy professional, one massage a month is near impossible to fulfill. My mother and I both signed up for a membership, and now we're struggling to keep up with our credits. She has 5 and I have 4. We've been trying to cancel, but they only give you a 30 day window to use your remaining credits and you can't transfer or gift them to anyone else. So we're kind of stuck in a membership until we can knock out a massage a week. I believe this is how they make most of their money - from people like us who are too busy to come in. Another thing is - you really have to book weeks in advance to get a spot if it's on a weekend. So, if something opened up in my schedule for the next couple of days, Massage Envy would be completely booked for the next week or two. That was another downside - they have so many members so you can't really pick and choose when you want to go in unless it's some off time (like during the weekday during work hours). This isn't really something that Massage Envy does wrong per say, just a disadvantage to such a manufactured process. Now, onto the "true" negatives: This particular location has problems with scheduling and updating info in our profiles. For example, one time I called to schedule an appointment for my mother and myself at the same time, with two different massage therapists. I even asked for the therapists names and for the receptionist to confirm our appointment. When we came in, there was no record of my mother's appointment - just mine. This was really inconvenient because as I noted above, we've been trying to use up our credits for the past couple of months. So instead of freezing our payments/accruals, they added on an extra credit. So now we have even more to go through. Also, when we first signed up, they charged my mom more than they said they would originally, so we had to call and sort that out. We've also had some hiccups with appointments, for example, they've had to move us around to different times due to the massage therapist changing their hours. Also, Massage Envy is a franchise, so if you have any specific notes or credits on your file that aren't normal, another Massage Envy won't be able to see or do anything about it. So they can take your normal credits, but can't help you with anything else. So, if you want to sign up for a membership, make sure it's at the Massage Envy you'll be visiting most often (they will make you fill out new forms for every new Massage Envy you visit). All in all, a very lukewarm experience - I'll be getting out of my membership as soon as I can, but it looks like I'm locked in forever. read more

Its kinda hard to write a review of this place. I was having some back problems, so I went in on occasion for some massages. The masseuse I got the very first time was obviously an angel sent from the heavens above. Sadly, she was no longer working there the next time I went back. I went there a number of times and was talked into doing a year long membership. Do I regret it? No, however once my membership was done, I cancelled it. The biggest problem with Massage Envy is scheduling. You really have to call and schedule an appointment well in advance, last second appointments almost never happen. The problem is, I dont schedule when my back hurts. Also, I have a preference for women, so that cuts down on the possible times. On top of that, if you have a preferred masseuse, you will never get a last second appointment. Every time I called, they were booked solid, or there was an opening 3 hours later. This annoyed me as I passed by it every day coming home from work and couldnt go in. On a few occasions when I called and it was booked solid, I got lucky calling another location. However, that was very rare, as the other locations were booked solid as well. The quality of the massages varies on the person giving it. I never had a bad one, they ranged from good to great. For me, it just wasnt worth it. My credits kept building up, since I couldnt schedule an appointment to use them. I ended up forcing myself to schedule a time to use them. I just couldnt use them when I wanted to. Obviously, they have to balance between having available masseuses and not having unused slots, but it definitely was heavily in their favor. Maybe for others, scheduling an appointment works for them, but not for me. read more

I went to Massage Envy because I had received a gift certificate for my birthday. Overall the massage was great. I don't remember who I had as this was back in August, but she was amazing and the massage felt so great. I also got a facial, which I usually never do in fear of breaking out, but the facial was amazing and my skin didn't get irritated at all. I felt rejuvenated and relaxed and overall the massage and facial were a great experience. The only reason I gave this 4 starts was because of how sales pitchy they were. My masseuse asked my reasons for going to the spa...If I was interested in learning about the products she was using or if I was more there just to relax. I said just to relax, however even with saying that, after the massage, she went right into sales pitch mode and tried sell me all these products and made an effort to show me all of the products she recommended for me that they had in stock. I was really not interested and this made me a bit annoyed, but the massage in general was a great experience. I probably won't go back unless I get another gift certificate. Just can't justify spending how much it is plus tip. read more

I recently went to Massage Envy in Sterling, VA for the first time. I had heard very good things about it and read good reviews on-line. Unfortunately, I had a horrible experience. One of the worst massages I have ever had in my entire life. Not only did I walk out feeling more stressed and entirely unrelaxed, but I still had to pay, even after explaining my dissatisfaction to the receptionists. I had asked my massage therapist to focus on my back and shoulders, which she worked on for maybe 10 minutes out of the entire 60 minute massage. Instead, she worked on basically everything else BUT my back. Honestly, my friend at home has given me better massages than my "certified" massage therapist did. So here's the conclusion I've come to after being a member. It's hit or miss with the massage therapists. I have had good luck with Jarrett and today I had Tracy for a facial and massage. Tracy is my favorite and is worth the price of admission. End result I don't like the membership program. I found it hard to go once a month. They got "piled up" and it became impossible to work through my reserves and if you put your account on hold you can't use the credits. So I have cancelled my membership but I would go back to see just Tracy. She's that good. read more

Where shall I begin? Let's see, I have seen a male therapist who acted like he was stoned out of his mind. In fact, one time, the dude feel asleep while I was face down and I could feel his hair touching my back. It was the most awful experience of my life. I have had several decent male therapists for deep tissue, but my number one pet peeve about this place: The therapists HABITUALLY take me back after the start time, take a LONG time to return to the room, and then have the nerve to end the massage anywhere from 3-5 minutes early. I have complained before, and they promise to adjust the bill, but then they never do. I can HARDLY wait for my membership to be done so that I can blow this popsicle stand!!! read more

New to the area and I had my sister visiting for my birthday. We were able to get same day appointments at the same time in Sterling but not, Falls Church or Herndon. Sister had a regular massage and enjoyed it, I got a deep tissue and LOVED it. My therapist was Julio and he is amazing! After several years of being a regular customer, it dissapoints me to say I'll never return, nor will I ever recommend Massage Envy. Stay away at all costs. My last visit and my wife's last visit were a nightmare when it came time to check out. We both had purchased each other gift certificates. I was the first to redeem said gift certificate and it seemed to go okay until checkout. The clerk didn't know how gift certificates worked and took her forever to figure it out. Because she was so unsure of herself, it left me with an uneasy feeling - like she didn't correctly use the gift certificate despite her assurance. A few months later, my wife went to use hers. When it came to checkout time, they claimed her gift certificate contained no value (even though I have a receipt that says otherwise). Either the lady who checked me out months earlier somehow used both certificates or they incorrectly applied my wife's certificate to somebody else's appointment. When confronted, Massage Envy was extremely rude to my wife. To make a long story short, they didn't believe her about the gift certificate and threaten to send her to collections if she didn't pony up the $100+ charge. I had to physically show up, phone their manager (who conveniently wasn't reachable, then in the middle of a flight, then miraculously able to talk to me - management FAIL) and ask why Massage Envy was stealing from us. It wasn't until I told them I would call the police and file theft charges did they admit their mistake. Oddly enough, when I was explaining my experience to a co-worker, he and his wife had an identical situation about a month before ours. I'll never go back and could never recommend such an establishment to anyone. What a complete joke of customer service and management. read more

I tried to ignore the previous Yelp reviews about scheduling issues. Unfortunately, my first experience with this location led to just that. 90 minutes before my scheduled massage I was called and told my massage therapist (Baha) has the flu, won't be available to provide my services, and there are no alternative therapists available to reschedule me for the same day. This facility does have several notices up in their building about the strict cancellation policies for clients; 50% of the appointment cost due if cancelled within 24 hours. Yet, when my appointment is cancelled less than 2 hours before the only offering is a free Enhancement- worth about $10. That seemed a bit unfair. This appointment was scheduled as a holiday treat for my boyfriend and I to go together, and we both adjusted our work schedules for the event. We ended cancelling the entire thing and will now likely not be able to even consider rescheduling something until after the New Year. Overall, disappointed. I know things happen, but cancellation by a massage therapist should have commensurate compensation to the client to what the company expects to receive if a client cancels. read more

I've been a member of Massage Envy for years and have always had good experiences at their locations in Burke and Lorton. When I first moved to Ashburn, I switched over to the Sterling location. At first, it was fine. Recently though, I've had several experiences that were just awful. First, I came in for an appointment and was called in fifteen minutes late. The therapist brought me to a room that wasn't ready (there were sheets on the floor, the face cradle was uncovered, etc). He told me to just "hold my head up off the table" until he could come back with a cover. After he came back, he completely ignored the draping process. I'm not modest, but he made me really uncomfortable because I was basically naked- and he had some wandering hands. Not to mention- the massage was terrible. He was leaning all over me, and he actually injured my shoulder. I had to see a physical therapist after that massage. It was terrible, but I thought: this was a bad therapist, which isn't necessarily the fault of the Sterling Store. I told management about the problems and they were very conciliatory. I thought the problem was solved. Then, when I went back: virtually the same thing happened. I had a totally unprofessional experience. The receptionist switched my therapist last minute because the therapist I had been scheduled with was requested by somebody else (why somebody else's request trumped my appointment, I don't know). Then the new therapist turned out to be terrible. He was again completely unconcerned with draping, terrible at massage, and at one point, said something about how I wasn't "wearing any undies." When I went to check-out, the receptionist told me that she couldn't calculate a percentage based tip, and that she needed me to tell her what dollar amount I wanted to give. Seriously! I don't know what happened to this location- I don't know if the management changed or if there were just a string of bad hires, but after two of the worst massage experiences I have ever encountered, I will not be going back to the Sterling location. I don't recommend you do either. If I were part of the Massage Envy Office, I would send somebody to the Sterling Store and find out what's going on. It's terrible. read more

The first month I went to this place I had a pleasant experience. Then December arrived an everything went down hill. If I call to cancel an appointment the day of, I have to pay half of the appointment fee. Yet, it is okay for a massage therapist to call in sick the day of an appointment and the customer gets nothing in return. I didn't want to reschedule with someone else because I've been working with this one person. SO, I rescheduled for the following Monday. The same thing happened again. I said no need to reschedule with someone else since I have an appointment with that therapist the next Monday (the plan was to do bi-monthly massages). I get a call on 12/13/2012 that Julie is on leave and to schedule my massage with a new therapist. Okay fine. Today (12.17.2012), I called to change my 90 min to a 60 since I was working with someone new. I specifically said "so, 7:30" and received a response that confirmed the appointment was at 7:30. I showed up at 7:30 and was told my appointment was only for 30 minutes by the therapist. When I attempted to clear things up at the front desk, I received nothing by attitude. Clearly there was a misunderstanding. I would not have shown up at 7:30 for no reason. The cancelled appointments + attitude = Going to a new location in January. read more

As a reference, I probably get massages about every other month from a whole lot of different different massage places including massages in other countries. However, this particular massage envy had the worst massage I ever recall getting. Initially, I had a very positive feeling about the place. The receptionist sits down with you and, while asking you the questions on the release form, actually fills form for you.The place itself was fine except for the fact that there were so many people there waiting for massages it gave the impression that it was just a machine shop, trying to get as many massages in as possible and then tossing them back out. My massage therapist (Anne or Anna can't remember which) was courteous, but seemed to lack the normal knowledgeable nature and professionalism of the massage therapists that I'm used to. For example, after you get yourself ready for the massage they normally knock on the door before they come in and ask if you're ready. Even though this isn't something I cared too much about. And although she asked what my problem areas were, the two areas that I told her about were barely addressed during the massage. I waited ten minutes into my hour massage before she came back in, but the massage ended about 6 minutes short of the hour. So my Hour long massage turned into about 44 minutes, if even. As for the massage itself, it just seemed plain sloppy. I'm used to massages being fairly structured and organized, going from one part of your body to another, and maybe staying and focusing on certain tight areas. This massage was just all over the place. I think this was the sequence: started with the back, worked the neck a little, back to the back, over to the arms, to the back again, then to the hands, then to the lower back, over to the shoulders, and then to the back again. The entire time, it seemed like when the therapist ran out of ideas of how to massage, she just defaulted to this one one move where she would just wipe both forearms across my back, starting in the middle, then spreading her arms with one arm going to my neck and one going to the lower back. That move was her go-to move and unfortunately, it felt terrible everytime. At any time, the massage either hurt from too much pressure or I didn't feel much at all. When asked initially the traits that I found most important in a massage therapist, I told them: being able to read the way my body responds and apply correct pressure from there. I was told that my massage therapist was one of the best at reading and responding to the body - so either my body is extremely hard to read (even though the majority of massage therapists I've had in the past were either good or great at this) or receptionist was lying. To sum it up: Normally (and ideally) during a massage I'm thinking to myself: This feels so good I hope it never ends. This time, that thought never crossed my mind. read more

First off, you get what you pay for. I was told that Massage Envy has been recruiting fresh graduates who don't have any experience with deep tissue. I've been to this particular Massage Envy twice, once with a therapist I knew who no longer works there due to office politics (the office is about the $ not the therapists. The therapists I feel are treated like slaves, but hey just my opinion)....and the other, a random therapist I was put with. Obviously the therapist I knew was AWESOME...the other therapist I went to for my 2nd massage DID NOT KNOW WHAT SHE WAS DOING! I dont think she even understood me when I said deep tissue...any "deep pressure" she gave me was on my bones....ouch! I wanted my back massaged...NOT MY SPINE. I'm not sure if I could even receive a relaxing massage....75% of the massage I was afraid what I was going to experience next AND I even told the therapist out loud several times what I preferred and not preferred DURING the massage. She just went through a routine that she memorized. If you've never had massage, MAYBE you'd like it here because you wouldn't know what a REAL massage felt like. The massages if not a member or not getting a 1st time massage is EXTREMELY OVERPRICED for a shorter than a full massage. (i.e. You get 50 mins for an "hour" massage/80 mins for a 1.5 hr massage) I rather pay my baby cousin to massage me, it'd probably be a better massage anyway :) read more

Let me say that the massage I receive is always wonderful. The problem is with trying to schedule an appt or get anyone in this location to acknowledge me as a customer. In the past year I have left messages when no one is available to answer the phone and yet NO ONE takes the time to return the call. As someone who worked in a call center and the customer service industry for years, it is disturbing that this business does NOT seem to give a darn about customer service. I finally made an appt via telephone making sure I actually reached a human. I also said that I wanted someone there that would be able to cancel my membership. The day of my massage, I talked to the front desk and they told me I COULD NOT cancel my membership. I said, what does that mean? I have a problem when customer service is NOT fulfilled and you are are telling me I can not cancel my membership. That makes no sense to me. I asked for someone to be here that I could talk to about cancelling my membership. The person that I was talking to finally said I am the manager, but I can not cancel your membership. Talk about me being dumbfounded. She said she would need to speak to someone else and they were not there that day and probably would not be in until the end of the week. She promised that someone above her would call me and it's been almost two weeks and not a whisper. I can not tell you at this moment if I am still a member or not. I like this location better than Leesburg. The reception is a lot more friendly and I don't get lost in the back. Had an AMAZING hot stone massage by K.P. He's down to earth and has a sense of humor. The therapists are all over the place with technique & experience. Not as professional as you would expect. I was charged twice for tip one time and another time I think the therapist would of rather been anyplace but there, it was that pathetic! The front desk is nice but incompetent. After cancelling membership, the next month was told the clerk did not do it right so I had to pay another month's fee! Then it was still messed up and the manager did not return my phone call. Inexpensive massages, some are good some are bad. the norm. I'm sure you could find a good person and stick with them if you try. The reason I give 1 star is because overall it is a bad experience. -The front desk people are meehhh... -It's virtually impossible to get an appointment any less than 3-4 days ahead of time and sometimes worse for weekends. -They do mess up appointments often. The worst mess up that had happened to me was that me and my girlfriend who often make appointments at the same time, booked at the same time (I booked both on same phone call). She got taken back to her massage and I just waited and waited. 15 minutes past my massage time I went to the front desk and asked what the deal was. Turns out the massage therapist for me didn't come in and nobody bothered to tell me. But of course I'm stuck at the place and can't leave because my ride was in a massage. They gave a simple "sorry, we won't charge you for this massage.." well I would hope not. This same situation happened to me a second time, however, they called me about 10 minutes ahead of time to let me know (we were literally already parked and walking towards the building). It's much more of an inconvenience when I book two massages and only one gets cancelled. Especially when we ride together. read more

I took advantage of the introductory offer of $49 for first time clients. I knew this was a chain and I figured I would probably get a "so-so" massage (which was fine for the price). To my surprise, I had a great experience! My therapist (Charlene*), was AWESOME!!! One of the best massages I've ever had. I'm not sure about the "membership" plan they advertise but for an occasional splurge, I will definitely be back! She did a perfect job! I gave them four stars because the front desk staff did not seem very friendly. I specifically asked for a reflexology appt and they did not book it as such. Thank goodness, I communicated to the therapist so we did not cross paths. Also, bottled water would be a nice touch as opposed to a cup of water. Overall, very good! read more

This is one of the most unprofessional places I have ever been. Many of the massage therapists do not have their licenses and can't pass the National Exam. It shows in their work. I have tried multiple therapists (I don't think we can call them therapists!!!) and they do not know the first thing about antamony, pressure points, etc.. My experiences as a member at Massage Envy in Sterling have led me to write this review. Overall, I would say that my massages there have mostly been good but my experience with the owner and front desk staff have been very bad. On two occasions, including once this week, I have heard the owner belittle employees. She was very mean to them in front of clients. Recently, my two favorite therapists, jon and eunee are no longer there and the only manager that was friendly and cared about clients is gone. This place is going down hill fast. Every time I call to book an appointment, the phone goes to voice mail or I am on hold forever. The girl that checked me out and was rude and unfriendly. BEWARE! I have NEVER yelped and decided to because of my experience yesterday. I saw a Marissa who was recommended to me and am in SO much pain today. I get a lot of massages and this is not normal. I had my partner look at my back and I have a bruise along my spine when I woke up this morning. I told her the pressure was too much and she said it was "good" for me... I like deep pressure but not over my spine! If it doesn't get better, I am going to the doctor first thing Monday. I went to feel better not worse! After all the negative reviews I was skeptical to try Massage Envy in Sterling. I am so glad I did. The first time I went I had Rob for a massage and he was wonderful. My second visit which was yesterday I had Tracy and she was also wonderful. They both worked on my areas of concern and checked in to see if the pressure was good. I have had plenty of massages in the past and these were just as good. When I walked in there was a man at the desk canceling his membership so I was very interested to see the process because a lot of the bad reviews seem to do with issue. The receptionist was polite, professional, and courteous. She had him fill out a cancellation form and made him a copy in case he had an issue. She even finished by saying they would miss him and they were sorry to see him leave. I am going to continue to go to this location. read more
