4 stars for Dr Ardady himself and 1 star for the staff and scheduling (wait time) Dr Arkady is very nice, personable and informative. Its just too bad that this office is always running behind. I have had 2 visits and both times I have had to wait an hour to see the doctor. First time, I waited 45 minutes and since I was not called I approached the receptionist and she was very non chalant about it. As if saying "what's the big deal, so u waited 45 minutes". There was no apology, only a "we will get you in when we can". That really ruined my mood and when I got to see the doctor finally after an hour of wait, I was trying to say everything to him and get answers quickly so I could get to the rest of my obligations for the day. I decided to give this office another try thinking maybe this was a one time deal. I went in 10 minutes before my appointment time. The waiting room was packed with elderly patients. I waited 45 minutes again...and approached the same receptionist. It was like de ja vu...same expression on her face...completely non chalant...no apology. She said: You have to wait another 15 minutes to see the doctor I said: I have already waited 45 minutes. Is this how this office is run? should I work and extra hour into my appointment times with Dr Arkady to plan the rest of my day? she said: We don't plan on the appointments to run an hour late. I asid: I am sure you don't. But nevertheless I am now running an hour late for the rest of my day. She just looked at me. Not even a simple sorry was uttered. When I finally saw the doctor an hour past my scheduled time, I felt rushed. After answering my questions, he was ready to wrap it up and walk out to get to the other patients who had waited an hour past their scheduled time. So I said: What about the results of my ultrasound? can we discuss that? He then rushed to look at the results and informed me that I was to go to a specialist and have a sample removed to be sent to pathology. REALLY?...... When were you going to tell me that? You were walking out for God's sake. Honestly if they don't overbook, then each patient will be seen at a reasonable time and don't have to get the shock of their life as the doctor is walking out. Also, what is so hard about a simple apology? I am assuming most of dr Arkady's patients must be elderly and they must not care that they are wasting an hour waiting to see the doctor. read more

Sorry, but so-not-sorry for a 1-star review. I did NOT get to see Dr. Massen. I'm beyond upset that I was not informed that I will need go arrive 30minutes early to my appointment to complete some darn paperwork til a few days before (while I was on vacation and had minimal reception). I called the office informing that I will not be able to make it if I need to arrive 30 minutes early. The lady told me the next appointment will have to be in November - a month from now. I told her that I do need to see a doctor sooner, but she sounded like could care less... only asking if I want to cancel the current appointment. I waited a month for this appointment just to be told that it'll be another month to see the doctor. Please train your receptionist to be more apologetic. read more

I got a new insurance company and I chose Dr. Massen as my primary physician, cense it's a new insurance I asked if I had a co pay, the girl checked and said until I meet my deductible it will be $104 for a visit, I asked if she can double check please, I called MY insurance company and the representative said that it's different depends on a doctor and with contract we have with Dr. Massen if its $104 for a visit you are only responsible for $22. When I called back and to Gaby who I spoke with that my insurance said it's only $22 based on the contract, she said no it's not and asked if the representative how deductibles work, so she was trying to say that she knows better the a person from my insurance staring at the computer screen with Dr. Massens name dosn't know. And she keeps insisting I was wrong, basically sayin you are stupid and i'm right, so basically insulting me like i'm an idiot. Horrible receptionist, highly don,t recommend this office. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Massen for many years now (review updated in 2016). I've always considered him a very good doctor, but have come to really respect his advice and knows he has my best interest at heart. He's helped me through several health issues, sent me to the right specialists and led me to receive the procedures I've needed. At times in the past, his humor hit the wrong spot, but he is a funny man and a great doctor. His staff is very helpful and professional. And it's great to get smiles and statements, "It's good to see you," each time. read more

I made Dr. Massen my PCP after getting into a life threatening accident as his office is 2 min from my home. I began seeing him after being released from two separate hospitals. In the four month period that I was under his care he saw me twice. Never once did he look at the areas where surgery was done or try to evaluate what was going on with the nerve damage. He was basically there to just push different types of morphine for the pain. In June I went back into the hospital due to complications from the morphine. I was also being checked for having CDIF. While I was in the hospital my wife called his office to say that I would be released in time to see him for my third appointment and explained what happened. Massens office decided to cancel the appointment just to be safe. After being released I received a certified letter from Massens office on the day they canceled my appointment stating that he no longer wanted to treat me because I canceled my appointment and he felt that he could not properly care for me. His prescribed drugs put me into the hospital twice in June and he decides to drop me, seriously?! To top it all off his office staff has had three weeks to forward my medical records to my new PCP and has failed to do so despite my many, many requests. This office is a joke and should be avoided if you care for your health and well being. read more

It is insanely difficult to get an appointment with this doctor. I had to wait 2 months just to get my first appointment, only to find out that because I was 5 minutes late due to traffic, I wouldn't be able to see the doctor and would have to reschedule. Then when I call in to reschedule I had to leave 5 different messages just to get someone to call me back. Then when they did finally call me back, 2 weeks later, they told me that yet again, I would have to wait 2 god damn months just to get an appointment. What the hell good is health coverage if you can't ever get in to see a god damn doctor. For that matter what does it even matter how good of a doctor he is if you can't get an appointment to see him without having to wait 2 months at a time. This doctor has already wasted 4 months of my life just trying to get in to see him, let alone actually address any of my serious health issues. Needless to say, I am absolutely furious. read more

I have only known Dr. Massen for about six months but every one of my dealings with him have been great! He goes above and beyond to help us get the care and medication we need! He is always available through the patient portal and responds so quickly! I would recommend his practice to anyone but he is especially gifted with my elderly mother-in-law. read more

I HATE this office! Dr. Massen was nice... I only saw him once but I really dislike the receptionist and the nurse, Ariana. First, I faxed in my new patient packet... 2 weeks later I called to follow up. To make a long story short... it took almost 1 month for them to finally make me a patient then when I asked to schedule an appt. it was going to take another month to be seen! Finally, when I was seen, the visit was fine.... Dr. was nice. Ariana was kinda careless and so was the receptionist... neither were very friendly. Since I hadn't seen a doctor in a long time, Dr. Massen has me go to quest diagnostics to check my blood. When I received the results, Nurse Ariana tells me that I have Hypothyroidism. I asked her what that was. She said, "Do you have access to the internet? Look it up." Then she asked where I wanted my prescription sent so I told her but I was shocked that she told me to look it up. Anyway, I started taking the medication and a few weeks later I started having some real bad side affects. I called to tell her and she put me on hold so that she can tell the doctor. Then she gets back on the phone and says, "The Doctor says your depressed. We will send your prescription in." I was soooo pissed!! I never picked up my depression prescription and I stopped taking the hypothyroid medication and guess what? By the end of the week, I was back to normal... no more side affects!!!!!! I cancelled my follow up appointment and I haven't been back since! It has been about a year now but what made me write a review a year later was that last week my cousins and I were talking and come to find out their Doctor is Arkady Massen and they HATE him too! My cousin said, "that guy's a jerk!" read more

I met Dr. Massen (primary care physician) in 2007 where he was the physician at Excell Healthcare and assigned to my husbands' care. Watching how Dr. Massen treated my husband and other patients compassionately during the years my husband was at Excell and how quickly he responded to all my questions and concerns about my husbands health and resolved medical issues he was having -- prompted me to ask Dr. Massen if he would be my own physician. I live in Oakland, and one of Dr. Massen's offices is in Hayward off 'A Street' on Hesperian. Although this can be a difficult commute due to I880, it is well worth the trip to see this doctor and have him be my primary care physician. They have a website where you can email a question to either the staff or the doctor directly and also order prescription drugs. Response time has been within 12 hours, no matter the hour I sent the email! Dr. Massen LISTENS to his patients, doesn't hurry through his examination and explains what course of action he recommends you take to resolve your issue(s). I cannot say enough about how much I admire and respect this physician and would recommend him to anyone searching for a family doctor. read more

Dr. Massen is the doctor we all hope we'll find but never do. He is listed as a 'Primary Care" physician...and 'care' is exactly what he does best. I have never felt ignored, rushed or lectured to during a visit. Dr. Massen has a way of explaining, listening and diagnosing the problem at the same time, and with a gentleness and humor that is almost non existent anywhere else...especially in a medical situation. His demeanor is like an old country doctor you'd see in the movies, but he stays current on EVERYTHING, so you'd better Google before you come if you want to sound knowledgeable -ha, ha! My visits don't even feel like doctor visits but more like a conversation with an old friend, and the time seems to fly by as a result. Although we have never discussed it, I'm convinced that Dr, Massen's talent and concern for his patients comes from a deep spiritual commitment and practice. All this filters down to his staff as well. The nurses and ladies at the front desk are all very helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. (cute, too) I almost never bother to do a review of anything, it's just not a thing I do. But in the case of Dr. Massen , I made an exception because I'm so tired of all the negativity and coldness in the medical profession and I think it's the right thing to make people aware of a doctor who will honestly take care of them and make them feel that their well being is important. I think Dr. Massen's office is the best kept secret in Hayward and maybe the Bay Area period.. I'm so glad I found them and I hope you will too. Stay well-- Tom read more

Dr. Arkady Massen and his staff have never failed me in the nearly twenty years I have been their patient. The past few years have been a difficult time for me as I have struggled with coming to terms with an illness that has profoundly changed my life and I sincerely don't know where I would be today if it were not for his care. Dr. Massen has always taken the time to listen to me, take my concerns seriously, and most importantly has shown me great patience as I have tried to adapt to the ways in which this disease has affected me. I know that his practice has thousands of patients, but Dr. Massen manages to always make me feel as if I matter. I am forever grateful. His staff are also an important key factor to the success of his practice I believe, and most especially Ariana. Ariana has been a vital component in assisting me at all hours of day and night including weekends and has graciously and tirelessly gotten the job done doing whatever it may entail with never a complaint. I have at times felt guilty when I have called upon her after hours but she has always been there and assured me that it was her pleasure to help in any way she could. I remember once she called me at 8 am, over a holiday weekend, to warn me of a potential drug interaction...that level of commitment is what is sorely lacking in healthcare these days, and it isn't often that you find people like this in healthcare at all anymore. She is truly an asset to their team. Even though I know at times Ariana has herself had her own personal struggles, she has never let that stand in the way of her doing her job, always going above and beyond to help out a patient. Not once in the years that I have been a patient of Dr. Massen's have I felt patronized or brushed off but instead have always been met with true compassion and empathy by both he and Ariana, as well as the rest of the staff . I thought it was time to let them know how important that has been to me. I am ever so grateful for the wonderful care Dr. Massen and his entire staff have provided me through the years. To them I say: thank you so much. It is quite obvious that I highly recommend this wonderful doctor and office. read more

I just wanted to tell you that Dr. Massen is the best, I have been going to him for the last 3 years, he is always very helpful and always will listen to your problems, I had an incident where I needed medication really bad that I have been taking for last 3 years and the doctor that gave it to me would not refill it he wanted $150 for a visit even tow i been taking the same medicine for 3 years, I told the doctor I am out of work and I cant afford the visit but all I wanted is a refill, his nurse was very rude ans said because I couldnt pay i should see other doctor, at that time I went to Dr. Massen and explained my situation, I told him that I was dependent ot the medication and I needed it, he was very helpfull and gave me a refill. It was very kind of him knowing that he cared about his patients and not the money, and he didnt even charge me for a doctors visit. I know anytime I have a problem I can always see him, he has been always very helpfull and always looking out for the best of his patients, I recommend Dr. Massen very Highly and I know you will have a great experience with him. read more

I dont know what any of these other reviews are even talking about. but I highly researched doctors before i choice dr. massen . I spoke with the staff and they said they are equipped to care for disabled patients and specialized in pain management. He has done absolutely nothing for my boyfriend. he took his files from when he first got out of the hospital 5yrs ago and just represcribed all the same medication to him without even doing tests or seeing if he needed them (which most of them he did not) he prescribed prilosec for heartburt which isnt even a ailment for my boyfriend. There is no handicap accesible bathrooms for use?? How equipped are you for disabled patients if you dont even have a restroom facility that can be used by a disabled person??? this guys has been a ya ya doctor . He told me that he just took my boyfriends word for it that he was being truthful about his medication??? what kind of ???is that?? He really doesnt even seem to want to be bothered in and out . nothing good to say at all unfortuantely . read more

Dr. Massen has been my primary care physician for over a decade. He is by far the best doctor that I have ever known. He makes it a priority to stay current and up to date on all medical knowledge, a huge task considering how fast new treatments become available and how fast medical science advances in the U.S. His knowledge of these medical advances is extremely impressive. I have had many medical issues over the past decade as I moved into my 50's and Doctor Massen has handled all of them with incredible efficiency and knowledge. He also tells it like it is without an BS, something I find incredibly refreshing. He also never rushes through an appointment and will spend as much time as necessary answering my never-ending questions. With all of the changes going on with health care in this country, I strongly recommend you reach out to a top notch professional like Dr. Massen to ensure a healthy and long life. He very well could save your life, he certainly has saved mine. Thank you Dr. Massen. read more

I have been treated by Dr. Massen and his staff for the past seven years. Without a doubt Dr. Massen is by far the best doctor I have ever had in my life. Dr. Massen makes me feel more obligated to performing things to make myself healthier at the same time given me the best care I've ever had. Dr. Masson's professionalism and dedication to each patient makes you feel like he is family. Dr. Massen staff is by far superior better than any staff of any hospital or clinic anywhere his staff knows me personally they check on me from time to time even without an appointment this particular practice is by far the best family doctor practice in the world. I give Dr. Massen this unconditional support and thank you for taking such great care of me. Thank you to the staff Arianna Nilda the rest of the team you make me feel like a family member thank you so very much Sincerely, James Hale read more

I don't think the family has had a "family doctor" since we lived in Ukraine over 13 years ago. Everyone has different needs, schedules, and insurances.... until we found Dr. Massen. I first started bringing my parents to him because someone told us he has Russian speaking staff, turned out that Dr. Massen is actually from our home town! Dr. Massen has been an unbelievable support system for my family during the hardest of times. My husband recently died from brain cancer and the doc served as a constant hub for information. He made himself available night and day and responded very quickly. Thank you Doctor for making this transition just a little smoother. A few things to know: he has a very particular sense of humor, very dry and sarcastic.. while his staff is very friendly and sweet, this makes for a well balanced visit every time! read more

We have been seeing Dr. Massen for over 15 years for our son who is a quadrapeligic, it is very hard to find anyone who will care for him so I am so grateful to Dr. Massen and his extremely friendly staff for all the support and help that my son needs. He goes far beyond out of his way to help us, our sons needs are very challenging and Dr. Massen always finds a solution, without him in our corner it would be a much harder life for him. I love the friendly people that work at the office and respond to my phone calls, they are very professional and courteous and most important treat my son like a normal person, which alot of people do not do. I really appreciate Doctor Massen and his staff they both are great. I can call and explain why I need to be seen and they will fit me in as soon as they can, like once I needed to follow up quickly because I had an emergency room visit. They fit me into their busy schedule, I waited about 5 minutes in the lobby before I was called in. Doctor Massen, focused on my health concern and prescribed medication right away. I was surprised, yes I've never had a doctor who was so concerned and actually interested in treating me (I had Kaiser before). I am definitely feeling much better. Thank you Doctor Massen and staff!!! read more

This phenomenal doctor has looked after my family for many years. I've had the privilege of meeting his wonderful family and meeting his amazing staff. This office is a family oriented practice which puts people first. I'm confident in his practice and care that I have made an effort to refer my family, extended family, church members and community only to his practice. His sense of humour is dry but the way he practice medicine makes up for that. Lol. P.S. You know good people when you move out of the country and make a point to visit them when you are in town. read more

I was suffering from chronic pain and was told by many Drs. that there wasnt much that could be done and something I have to learn to live with. Luckily when I changed jobs and my new insurance didnt cover the old network, I found Dr. Massen. I went to see him for a physical and told him about my chronic pain, he immediately recommended a surgeon with specialty in my pain. Soon after I was healed.
