I have been going here for close to 50 years, even when it was still a KFC. But my last three take out experiences were terrible. The chicken I had was completely dried out. You could pick at it a little bit but it was so bad it was pointless. Even the wings from the meal were so dried out they crumbled apart
So, after about a good 6+ months of not eating there, especially after my last couple of terrible meals, I was hungry for their fried chicken. Ugh. I wondered what awaited me this time... You see, when it's done right it's WONDERFUL chicken, but when it's bad Boy O Boy, it's REALLY bad chicken! The worst!
So, to not take a chance on another truly bad died out chicken meal, my partner called ahead and asked if they could have some FRESH chicken for the order. DENIED!!! When they told me the restaurant's answer I was shocked! Denied getting fresh food? What kind of a place is this? This can't be right, can it?
So in anger, I decided to call and speak with the "manager" myself and I was bluntly told that they did not "drop" fresh chicken for each order they made and that their chicken was "made fresh every hour". I make fresh Chicken Fingers myself at home and my hour old chicken fingers still taste and look like chicken fingers, not their dried-out carcass of a chicken finger. Where do they keep them for that hour? A sandblaster? A dehydrator?
But, and this is the big "BUT" she explained to me their process of "double breading" their chicken which can dry out the chicken. This sounded VERY odd to me. This honestly sounded like they just took already made chicken, and once it was getting up there in age, (maybe 50 minutes into that hour hold time?) they breaded it again and then fried it again to sort of freshen it up which then made it dry out. I never heard of such a thing! That would explain some of the truly darker than dark pieces of chicken and those wings that turned to dust in your fingers!
EUREKA! The case of the dried out the chicken was solved! You may be served a freshened chicken which is not "technically" old, but, come on now, IT'S OLD!!! In our area, we had two other places. Spangenberg's and Martins Chicken. Both places served fresh, right out of the broaster, chicken. I know this because when I would call Martins she would say "I'm going to drop a fresh batch for you" and even when she didn't, I would get there too early and she would still be pulling the chicken out of the fryer while I stood there! I NEVER had a bad meal at either place. EVER! It's so sad that both places had to close due to family issues leaving the truly worst of the worst. But Massers Chicken sits around for an hour or is double-breaded and ends up being a dried out mess. You know when you are getting something fresh and something that sat around or was "double breaded". You know...
Then I was presented with the "You should have called to complain" line to make it right. So it was MY fault all along! Honestly, what is wrong with just making a meal right the first time? Who wants to get home to find they got a bad meal waiting for them, only to have to jump back in the car to take it back? Who wants to do that? NO ONE! Do you want to pay me for my time and gas fixing your mistake? No? How about you deliver a new fresh meal when you screw up the first one? That doesn't sound like fun either does it? In the end, you want me to take another chance on getting yet another bad meal? No Thank You! Make it right the first time and I will continue to be a customer.
So, after eating there for close to 5 decades, after three truly horrible meals in a row, and after being denied my final attempt to try to specifically get some fresh chicken out of this place, I can honestly say I will never eat at this place again. I've done my best and was about as understanding a customer as you can be.
I don't ask for anything truly special. I just want something good and worth the price. Their chicken is already overpriced, so it at least can be good chicken. I know what they are capable of and they missed that mark three times in a row. I was a manager once. A good manager would have heard my reasons and stopped me right there and told me they would have been more than happy to make my chicken order fresh, to try and make up for the bad experiences I had. But not in this place or this manager. She stood her ground only offering your standard apologies. Nothing more. So for that, I offer this review.
To all those thinking of eating at this place. Be on notice. Ask if it's the Chicken of the Past, the Chicken of the Present, or the Chicken of the Future. You will be glad you did! Good luck, and godspeed! read more
