One thing that helps this place stand out is the staff. So helpful and friendly, each person that passed us stopped to say hi and see how were were doing, which is rare especially on a busy Saturday morning. We came in to see about some ON brand of shoes to help with the long weekend of walking. They had a decent selection, tho the size I needed for the style I like wasn't to be had today. I believe it's a discontinued model, as it was on sale and almost identical to another that was regular price. Pulling up they had a managers sale outside with some really drastic price cuts, on Birkenstocks, Hoka, Kuhl, Patagonia, and Free People brands. Wife got a Free People sweater for $19.99! Inside it's wide open and tall in height, the shoes and other items were up a set of stairs. They had several of the big brands in stock, tho the amount and variety of styles of each brand was limited. They carry the clothes and shoes as well as kayaks, bikes, and a few other sport items. Great place. Prices were MSRP on what we looked at, so the same here as other stores. read more

We were going to Jazzfest. The weather forecast predicted 1 inch of rain. Failed to pack boots or a weather proof backpack. The people who worked at Massey's were such a big help. They had a wide selection of boots and back packs for us to choose from. They were so helpful and got us lined up with the perfect gear. The store itself is lovely with a wide selection of sporting goods. You can get to it on the Canal Street/ Musuem line of the cable car. $1.25 a ride or $3 for an all day pass. Great store! My experience was mainly with the bike shop. I brought my road bike here to get the chain replaced as it had gotten a bit rusty. The guy at the shop said it would be $13 with labor included. While the bike was still in the shop they called me and said that there was an issue with the tires, and that it would be good to tru the tires (straighten them out), and that it would be $15. I agreed to do this. After I went to pick up the bike, they gave me the ticket, and at the front desk, I was charged $50. I asked what the difference was and why it was more than I was expecting ($28). The cashier called the mechanic and said he had forgotten to charge for the chain itself ($16), when he had clearly told me when I dropped my bike off that the charge for chain and labor would be $13. This dishonesty really turned me off to the store and I don't think I will be going back anytime soon. I can't speak for the merchandise and other parts of the store, which I'm sure are great. However, be wary of the bike shop and make sure to get a clear quote beforehand. read more

Excellent selection of outdoor gear. Service also goes above and beyond what I've seen elsewhere. I have bought kayak roof racks and had the mounted immediately. I just had components on my bicycle upgraded by a competent, courteous, and enthusiastic bicycle mechanic. They also have an excellent selection of bicycles during a time when other shops are sold out. I don't think many people see Massey's as a bicycle shop, but for self vice they are on par with the best. the bicycles are the hybrid style cruisers suitable to the rugged, pitted New Orleans roadways. I did not check out their component selection, but suspect they could order what anyone needs. the mechanic was knowledgeable about the comparability between brands, that is exceptional. Super overpriced w/ a small selection probably cause New Orleans doesn't get cold weather. Yelp took me to their closing store first which had nothing so maybe that needs to be updated. A hat & scarf were $82, but I was freezing & no one knew it would be 30 degrees in New Orleans, not even the locals. Target was out of winter apparel. Save the month & go to Jackson Square & Bourbon Street first where hats, gloves & scarves are a third of the price & they have a huge variety! read more

Massey's Outfitters is locally owned with corporate prices. I thought Massey's was a Northern company chain because the prices are relative to stores like Academy and Dick's but it's actually locally owned, since 1972. Unfortunately, I don't feel like Massey's is geared toward New Orleans in the way that would be beneficial to me. They have the North Face jacket style you can see on pretty much every private school kid in NOLA among other brands including Patagonia and Marmot, but there is no price break what-so-ever. It's also the beginning of the season. Massey's has a lot of their summer stuff at 40% off right now, but the styles are more Northern mom than Southern gal. I will say, they do have a line of original tee shirts that are pretty cool featuring a tribal-designed crawfish, an alligator, fish, a tiger or a pelican. Besides clothing, they have camping, kayaking, cycling equipment among other divisions of outdoors equipment, sans any diving, wakeboarding, boating equipment. It would be great if they brought in some of these other divisions since the lake is so close! read more

I took off one star because they are expensive but you already knew that! Living in Mid-City makes Massey's very convenient. Ok, I'm with Jen L. and wish I was more outdoorsy to justify spending more money there. Hey, I at least I got the Groupon for kayaking (because of my guy friends has his own kayak and wants to go kayaking with me on the bayou) so I'm trying! One of my exes convinced me to go camping with our church group and I had a handheld fan and handheld mister in my hands the whole time (yeah, I'm high maintenance and I own it). Anyway, back to my review. Kayce S. is right, it's pricey but there is quality stuff. My guy friend (kayak guy) bought his car rack for his kayak from there. They were talking kayak stuff and the sales folks are knowledgeable. I have bought a Northface fleece jacket there and other accessories. My friend (kayak guy) even wanted to buy these $120 flip (fortunately they didn't have his size but he liked the design, he's an artist so what can i say!). I almost bought a rain jacket/anorak there but they didn't have the color and brand I wanted. The sales guy was super sweet and looked up the Northface brand (yes I want Northface because it will last forever, don't ask, I ended up getting Eddie Bauer so there) on the internet and showed me what colors etc. I'm intrigued of also renting kayaks from them but ended up buying the Groupon. My kayak friend said that once he bought his paddle board (which btw, is hella expensive) 0then he'll let me use his kayak. However, they refused to register our new bicycles, even tho they listed themselves as one of two places in the city to do so, because we bought our bikes elsewhere rather than from them. Massey's is one of the best outdoor sport suppliers in the area for nearly any activity other than hunting or fishing. This is their main store location and they have a great selection of clothing and equipment. They also have kayaks for rent and sell new and used bicycles. They often have some decent sales here and are one of the few local places or only local place you can find many outdoor items. The only downside to this place is they have so much cool stuff you're always tempted to buy more than you intended whenever you walk inside. Great selection, fair prices and good service make this one of my favorite places to equip myself for any adventure or just the adventure of daily life in NOLA. read more

Massey's is a high-end outdoors equipment dealer. Product: This place is *not* comparable to Academy or Sports Authority, nor is it comparable to "big box" outdoor places like Cabela's. The products you'll find here can best be described as "extreme sports gear"--outer wear for hiking, athletic shoes and boots, tents, mountain and race bikes, rucksacks, compasses, and the like. I was disappointed to find the last time I went in they did not have FitBit or a comparable Bluetooth-enabled exercise counter, but previous times I've gone, I've found the best outdoor shoes I've ever had (Goretex-lined). You can also have your bike repaired here. This place ain't cheap, and the selection is sparser than I like, but if they have it, it is of high-quality. 3 stars Service: There is a worker at the front counter, one by the bike area in the back, and typically a floater or two working the floor or stocking. The employees seem eternally busy (meaning, they won't go out of their way to greet or assist you---you have to get their attention), but they typically are well-informed on their products and services. 3 stars. Facilities: A rather monolithic, flat-topped brick building just a few blocks off Canal Street on the Lake side of North Carrollton, there is a small parking lot on the side and a few spots to park right in front of the building. There's a neat mural of I forget who (founder of the Sierra Club, maybe?) on the parking lot side of the building. The first floor front wall is mainly glass with displays. Inside, it is a split-level shop, with most of the clothing and smaller gear and accessories downstairs, and the footwear, large camping gear, and bikes upstairs towards the back of the building. It's a little snug in here. 3 stars Overall: Yes, they have a lot of stock, but with the limitations I noted above, such as a lack of fishing and hunting gear, firearms and ammunition, and some more mundane indoor exercise stuff that you'd find at a larger establishment. I stopped in here looking for a part for my Schwinn and really liked a Marin city bike that I found on the show floor. The price was a little out of my range so I wasn't really serious about it until he mentioned that they do trade-ins then it was ball game. I was able to get enough for my old bike to make the new bike in my price range thus a sale was completed and I couldn't be more satisfied. Plus they have 1 years 100% warranty. The best place in the city for outdoors gear. I've been here several times for gear and I've always found what I'm looking for. I've gotten a Marmot Goretex rain jacket, Vasque hiking shoes, as well as other things. The prices may be a little high, but that's what you get when you go to a high end outdoors shop like Massey's is. You'll see similar gear to what you would see in a REI store, but on a smaller level since their just not as big. If they don't have your size is something they'll happily call their other stores and see if they can find it for you and get it into the store for them. They did this for an Osprey pack for me. I paid for the pack on Saturday and it was in the store for me to pick up on Monday. The best part of the store is the customer service that you'll get. All the people there are very helpful and they have someone that is knowledgeable in every area of gear to help you out. read more

I needed my back tire fixed a couple weeks ago. I brought it into the bike shop in the back. The guy put in a new tube and I was on my way. Less than twenty four hours later, my back tire is flat again. It's fine. I assumed they just missed something before. I bring it back in but nobody is working in the back. 12 days go by before it's fixed. I stopped in a few times to check but nobody was ever back there. I finally pick up my bike on Sunday and Tuesday evening on my way home from work, my back tire completely rips off of my bike, causing me to almost fall. Never going into Massys again. I attempted to return an item within the guidelines stated on my receipt: within 30 days, new, unused and in original packaging, and accompanied by the original receipt. Massey's refused to take it back. Thankfully the amount of money involved was small. Imagine if it had been a larger purchase? I'd be out much more money. Massey's earned two stellar stars for the guy on the floor that took time and effort to go over backpack brands with us and measure us for packs. Massey's lost three stars because of the two women at the register. When we inquired about the water bottles, we got a curt response "what you see is all there is here". When I went to check out, the lady at the register was talking bad about another customer that had just left. Gee, I wonder if they gossip about all the customers that come throug?! In any case, perhaps preoccupied with gossiping about us, she failed to recognize that one of my items was on sale. I mentioned that it was a sale item to her, and in response I got an unapologetic annoyed look. Afterwards I took a look at the receipt and noticed that it was reduced by 50% as opposed to the large 60% sign advertised at the table. When I brought it up she clarified that the large 60% sign on the table only applies to certain items on the table. So she admits that they employ shameless misleading advertising. We considered paying a bit of a premium on the backpacks to support local, but locals like these make corporate not look too bad. read more

There is a lot of gear crammed into the store, but you will most likely find what you are looking for and the sales people are very helpful. They also have a bike shop in which you can stop by without an appointment for a quick fix. Prepare to be somewhat insulted by the hipster working the bike area. it was actually kind of funny...no, we were not going to VooDoofest , but thank you for the assumption. If you purchased your bike here, the labor is free, which is awesome! They are open on weekends which is also great. I will be back! read more

Given that New Orleans doesn't have an REI or EMS, I went to Massey's looking for a lightweight rain coat and some backpacking gear. Unfortunately I didn't find what I was looking for, but I did enjoy the overall experience at the store. Solid selection of major outdoor brands (North Face, Patagonia, Marmot, etc.) and cool bike and kayak areas. I'll definitely try coming back as the prices were pretty reasonable and they had a fairly large clearance/discount area. read more

I bought a women's fleece-like vest -- Arcteryx brand -- back in winter. When it arrived, it was stolen from my front porch before I could pick it up. I called Massey's and discovered they had an insurance service that allowed me to get a full refund on the stolen item. All I had to do was submit an online local police report and give them a copy. In the mean time, the store sent me their only remaining vest in my size. The fellow on the phone was friendly and super helpful. The vest itself was really well made and worth the ~$100 price. Specifically, the inset pockets laid flat; lower edge and armholes were finished neatly with a stretchy seam binding; zipper lays flat and works smoothly; stand-up collar doesn't flop over. The outer texture is a fine knit, and inner side is a soft fleece. Bottom line: I was very pleased with Massey's service and with the product. read more

I give Massey's a 5 star rating due to their friendliness and willingness to help! They repaired a brake issue on my bicycle for free, and on short notice at that. They put a bike on reserve for me over the phone, and had it tuned up and "road ready" by the time I arrived to pick it up. Very helpful and efficient. Specifically, Walker in the bicycle section in the back of the store, is both knowledgeable and eager to help (and very cute). I will most definitely be returning to Massey's in the future for my bicycle needs! read more

Item was shown as "in stock" so I ordered 3 different color shirts. When I received it, not only did they only send 1 shirt but it was totally the wrong shirt with a college logo on it. I sent it back for a refund. When the refund hit my account, within 2 days I received another package from them. I opened it and it was the same shirt again with another charge to my account. Obviously a shipping mix up so I returned it requesting another refund to my account. It's been over a month and I still have no refund. In fact, they are no longer communicating with me when I request a status. I will continue to pursue a solution but I will also be letting everyone know about my poor customer service experience. read more

After a terrible experience at the Metairie store I decided I would stop by the Mid-City store as I was right in the area. The customer service here was awesome! I was helped the moment I walked in the door. The guy that helped me was so kind and awesome. He honestly seemed to be the only one interested in customer service, as I noticed the other two people working were just standing at the desk chatting. Anyhow, this guy went through a variety of shoes and helped me pick out a great pair. As he walked away he started helping another customer. The only downside to my visit was my return to the store. I ordered something that was sent down from Baton Rouge. I was told it would be in sometime in the late afternoon. I busted my butt to get there at 5:45, and the item wasn't in. I was told the truck just left Metairie and would arrive in 15... umm I know for sure it would take longer than that due to the time/traffic. Anyhow, it was one of those things that I had to cancel because I needed it right then. Overall, besides that mishap, I would send a friend here if they needed something outdoorsy. read more

Tried to order a large Kuhl Team 1/4 zip Men's Sweater in Pirate Blue on three separate occasions with Massey's with zero success. The first time the order was lost in transit. I called customer service at 440pm. No one answered even though the website says someone is there until 5pm. I finally got a hold of Matt - who apparently is the entirety of Massey's customer service department - the next weekday who informed me that the customer service hours were incorrectly listed. They're only there until 430pm not 5pm as the website says. They tried to correct the problem by making a replacement order. The second time, the item never arrived. When I called customer service Matt checked on the order and I was told the item was listed on the website as one thing but was actually a completely different piece of clothing altogether on the shelf. I have no idea how that happens. So, I placed the order a third time, this time ordering a different size since my preferred size was seemingly no longer available. After placing the order the final time, I never received any tracking information and the order never arrived. I contacted Matt in customer service via email. He didn't respond so I contacted him again after 4 days via chat. He said he couldn't locate my email message. Matt apologized for "the mess" I've experienced and said the third order that was placed couldn't be fulfilled and that the transaction would be voided. After three times, I've given up. Incorrect customer service information listed on the website? Items on the shelf improperly listed on the website as something else? Placing an order and getting a confirmation receipt of order but never receiving the item ordered? I don't know what the heck is going on with this company. Seems like some people have had a great experience. I'm jealous because I've never seen any of that great service come through. Kudos to Matt in customer service who did his best but couldn't do much beyond apologizing repeatedly and refunding my money. All I wanted was the item I ordered. read more

I wish to report an experience I had with a crappy bike shop in New Orleans. It's called Massey's and it's on North Carrollton. I have nothing against the rest of the shop but the bike part of the store is run by nitwits. We brought my son's bike there to be broken down and packed up in a box ready for shipment to Boston. I had been quoted $45 over the phone. When I got there, the guy who purported to be the bike manager said it was $100 for that service. Which is about double would anybody charges. I said fu#k that but I'll take a box. He gave me an undersized box and my son and I broke the bike down and we shoved it in the Box, with all parts. Further insult, the bike manager wouldn't allow us to use the shop's pedal tool for the eight seconds it would take to get the pedals off, so my son had to get back on the bike and pedal a half-mile back to the house to pick up my bike pedal tool. After we did all of this, the bike guy at Massey's said he would seal up the box, which he did. The box was then picked up by FedEx pursuant to an arrangement I had previously made with Bikeflight, and when it showed up in Boston the rear axle and quick release spindle were missing. Both were securely part of the rear wheel when we put said wheel in the Box. When I called to bring this to the attention of Massey's staff, they denied it, blamed us for it, and then hung up on me when I insisted that everything was in that box when we left it with them. I really don't have any recourse other than to b**** about this on Yelp. I tried to put something up on their Facebook page but they took it down immediately. Their total unwillingness to take responsibility is amazing. read more

4.5 stars! So, yeah. Massey's can seem a little pricey at first glance. But they're not selling bargain-basement kind of stuff that's going to self-destruct on your first outing, either. You're not going to find crappy Coleman tents and those awful thirty-dollar plastic canoe paddles and similar stuff here. Most of the gear I've seen seems to be middle- to upper-middle of the road - perfect for the casual enthusiast who is willing to pay a little more for quality. I've been really pleased with everything I've gotten from there, and the prices generally aren't too far out of line for comparable items. Sometimes I can find things cheaper online, but it's usually not enough of a difference to make me want to stray from supporting a local business and getting the benefit of the top-notch service from their knowledgeable (and friendly!) staff. And a lot of stuff (like Yakima roof rack pieces-parts) is right in line with the pricing I find online. I would LOVE for them to have every single thing I've ever wanted (More canoes and canoe-ish gear! More paddles! More tents! More PFDs! More kids outdoor wear!) so I never have to spend a dime elsewhere, but you can't always have your cake and eat it too, yanno? I would much rather have the benefit of some super cool folks that can give me the lowdown on paddling Bayou St John because they've actually been-there-done-that, than end up with a huge box-store full of folks that have never set foot (or rear, ahem) in a canoe. I also dig that they host kayak demo days on Bayou St John, although I've never attended one. Free to the public to check out some boats on the water, which is really the only way to tell if it's actually something that's going to fit you and be comfortable. Awesome stuff. read more
