I would almost go so far as to give it a 5 star, because it is probably the coolest store downtown. When my wife and I first moved to Greenville, we checked out the downtown area. A lot of small mom and pop shops and nifty looking restaurants. We then encountered the Mast General Store. I'm not even sure how to describe this place. The store has outdoor goods, souvenirs, candy, shoes.... I guess that's where the "general" part of the store comes in. I really like trying the different "cokes" (peope unfamiliar with the south, Coke is the midwest equivalent of Pop, or the east/west coast equivalent of soda). Apparently the thing to get down south is a moon pie and an RC cola- they even have t-shirts of this combo. My wife was a big fan of the bulk candy. You pay $6 or $7 per pound of any mixture of candy you can conceive. This is a must visit if you happen to be in the downtown area. General stores generally have something for everyone and Mast fits the bill. I always make it one of my stops while in Greenville. They have an excellent selection of brands including Woolrich, Patagonia, and The North Face. The old school candy section is a blast from the past and they have a whole housewares item of unique items as well. One of my favorite sections of the store is the shoe section upstairs. The staff isn't on commission but treat you as if they are (in a good way). I picked up a pair of Clarks last time I was there that I haven't seen anywhere else since and they've become one of my favorite go to shoes. read more

Perhaps I was too harsh in my last review. I can only assume I was stressed from not finding what I needed. Today, however, was quite the contrary. After an all-day wild goose chase for a NorthFace jacket, I concluded my search at Mast General Store. They had a few items left, and while I didn't find the exact jacket I wanted, I found one I was happy with. The sales associate was very helpful and I got a great deal. The Mast General Store is an easy way to find something unique and kill some time downtown - it has two entrances, one off Main St. and one beside Sassafras. There are two stories too - inside you can find a wide selection of men and women's clothing, outdoor shoes, camping gear, rain jackets, candy, toys, and more. You'll find a lot of the same things as a typical general store with the addition of local items and more stuff for the outdoors. It can be pricey, but they do sales and it carries some popular/reliable brands that aren't always easy to find. It's often busy too, but not in a way that creates lines or makes it uncomfortable to be around. I'd definitely bring visitors by, or check it out if you are planning a camping trip/outdoor vacation! read more

Second time I have been in a Mast General Store. The first time was their location in Boone, NC. They has a great selection of outdoor clothes, t-shirts, and other items. I think if it is anything to put on your body or feet they have it in stock. Very helpful staff. Great location on Main Street in downtown Greenville. It was smothering hot in there, so I lowered my mask to take a breath of fresh air and immediately the store clerk stormed over to fuss at me to pull my mask back up. Once upon a time, not too long ago, when communities were a bit smaller, and we as a nation were less connected through interstate highways, there existed the General Store. The store served the community and/or remote households in the area, selling goods that were needed, but were not necessarily in such high demand as to support a specialized, stand-alone store. So, along with grocery staples, the General Store would carry items such as clothing, household appliances, cookware, reading material that may be of interest to the general community -you get the idea. If an item wasn't available, the proprietor would track it down and special order it, or begin carrying it if demand was great enough However, with the advent of the interstate highway system, and easier access to goods purchased through specialized stores, the local general stores began disappearing. Now, they are all but a part of history. One can get an idea of the role they played in a community via a convenience store such as 7-11, or a warehouse store such as Costco or Sam's Club, which could be considered the heir apparent, but these modern-day stores still don't convey the life-blood importance of the role a General Store played. So to give an idea, let's travel back in time to the 19th century, and assemble a shopping list of items to purchase in one day -preferably in just a couple of hours. New pair of shoes Fishing pole Frying pan 2 lbs mixed candy Lip balm A book on regional edible plants 4lbs cornmeal Sheet Music A suit for a job-interview Now keep in mind that this is 1899 (or even 1928 if you wish). You can't duck into a Payless, Borders, or Trader Joes -they don't exist yet. This was the purpose of a General Store, and this is where Mast comes in, though the focus has shifted. Now, rather than bringing the outside world to the community, the store now brings the community to the outside world, while still providing unique goods and services not found elsewhere in the area. As you walk through the door, it's hard not to be struck with a sense of history. The first half of the store contains products made in the area by locals (such as corn meal, preserves, wood carvings, etc.), and items made within the state, as well as things that aren't found easily elsewhere (such as cast-iron cookware, balms and tinctures, cooking supplies, books and toys, etc.). The second half of the store is devoted to clothes: T-shirts, hats, shoes, coats -you get the idea. Some of which you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Just try to find a "Moon Pie" T-shirt. My personal favorite, and reason enough to patronize the General Store, is the wide selection of candies and confectionary not found in too many places these days. Even though they were made famous by the band who took their name, just try and find a place that sells Squirrel Nut Zippers. All in all, this employee-owned small chain is worth patronizing by everyone -be you a tourist or a local. Surprises and delights do await you. read more

The people who work here are great. I come in only once every few weeks but am greeted (and remembered) as though I were an old friend. In addition, a few weeks ago, some sales representatives in the middle of the store went above and beyond. Tip: there is a parking garage on Richardson Street (between West Washington and West North) just behind the store, and it's free on weekends (and maybe in the evening from M-F). Some things are really high prices, while other items seem reasonable. The staff, however are not that helpful - almost seemed like they are more concerned with shoplifters than actually helping you! Upon entering, I was handed a coupon which is always a plus in my book. We always make a stop to Mast General Store. Our favorite thing is the old fashioned candy department. They have favorite candies from your childhood no matter what era you grew up in! The candy is in bulk and you pay by the pound. You can get a Mary Janes, atomic fire ball, caramels, candy sticks (cigarettes), taffy, ice cubes, Necco wafers, cherry mash,and the list goes on. We also like the selection of housewares. Bright colorful cups, kitchen textiles - all with a hint of nostalgia. The iron cookware is great too. Great place to buy souvenirs too. It's an odd but cool mix of 5 stores in 1: Store 1: Outdoor Store/Outfitter - Great "outdoor" clothes brands (Columbia, etc.) as well as a collection of goods to use on an outdoor adventure...freeze dried food, camping supplies etc. Store 2: Awesome shoe store - I love durable, comfortable, supportive shoes (Merrill, Born, etc.). They have a small but decent collection of shoes here. Store 3: Old-timey candy store - yum! Store 4: Old-timey toy store - they have both newer toys as well as old classics like sock monkeys and potato guns. Store 5: Kitschy gift store - whether you need to pick up some SC stuff for out-of-town gifting, or other gifty items like candles/towels/kitchen stuff, the gift section is well stocked with last minute ideas. All in all, I have a hard time walking by without stopping in, checking out their sale tables, and grabbing some jawbreakers for the road :) read more

I love this store! Though Mast General store is a chain, I love how they have so much local flavor! They have books about Greenville and things with the Palmetto and moon. This is a great place for out of town guests to oooh and aaaaah over. The candy store is what always gets me. The pralines are the BEST! They're like $3 apiece, but so worth it. I stuck one in everyone's Xmas gifts this year as a little treat and they were certainly appreciated. read more

This store is great for any outdoor enthusiast! Come here to get everything from tents and sleeping bags to shoes and clothes (for the outdoorsman). They have a really great buyer who carefully selects the products they carry in-store, which isn't too wide of a selection (but it's a great selection). They even have excellent area guidebooks from camping to hiking to kayaking and canoeing. Pick one up! What makes this store great, in my opinion, is the very back. They have giant barrels of candy and you can just fill up a basket or bag and pay by weight at the end. A kid's dream come true! The other half of the back has a really neat mixture of more gifty items, kitcheware, and cookbooks. read more

My family and I were visiting from Florida and we are relocating to the wonderful Greenville area! My parents took my French bulldog and my rescue dog in to get properly fitted and Hannah went above and beyond to help them. She was patient, kind and so helpful that we walked out with two fresh harnesses that fit my two dogs beautifully! The store is amazing I think it is the largest general store I've ever been in my life, but people are wonderful their smiles on faces and it was a very glorious experience especially for my parents who are new in town! Great place to get souvenirs, candy and everyday outer wear. This place has just about everything I needed for souvenir shopping; shirts, postcards, etc. The main floor had men and women's clothing. There was small section for kids clothing and a section even for pets. They also had a great selection of shoes on the top floor and a whole treasure trove of candies in the lower level or basement section. You can spend an hour or so at this store with some great finds. read more

So in this store I can purchase a very odd assortment of goods...I understand that is what a "general store does", it provides something for everyone...a one stop shop...if you fancy that kind of thing... So if you have ever read the blog or read the book "Stuff white people like" you will get a chuckle out this place... All I have to say is if you need outdoor performance outerwear and/or footwear and have the desire to stuff your pockets full of retro candy...you have found the place where you can do it...and you can accomplish all this while drinking a retro southern soda in a glass bottle... Maybe is should just be called Mast Store and drop the general... because I don't think this place has something for everyone... read more

Great place to buy souvenirs and items unique to the Upstate. It's a really big store with a lot of options. They have old-time Coca-colas in the glass bottles. They also have barrel candy in the back. You grab a bucket, fill it with old-time kind of candy that we grew up with. Definitely a must stop when you have guests in town. One star taken off because the clothing side of the store is frankly, ridiculously priced. Doesn't seem to be any interest in attracting shoppers who can't fathom laying down sixty dollars on one item just because of the name on the label. I've seen plenty of cute pieces, but if I really want to purchase one, I can find it cheaper online. Now, the 'fun' side of the store is the place to go. Skip the overpriced wool sweaters and head down to the candy section to find a great variety of 'vintage' candies The per pound price is a bit high, but if you really buy a pound of candy at one shot on a regular basis you need dental intervention. Pick out a few fun bits to reclaim your youth for a moment, then shop the gift side of the store where you can find something you just gotta have right now-a Christmas tree ornament, some retro cleaning supplies, kitchen accessories, mugs, books, toys...you'll find something awesome, I promise. read more

Yup this place is down right cool! They are a true general store reminiscent of the old days. Now that's not to say they don't have anything useful. Lots of local clothing, lots of outdoor gear, lots home goods, and an old school candy shop. They claim to have over 500 different candies and I believe it! For what it is, Mast General Store is really a neat place. Only here can you find a South Carolina coffee mug, some high-end hiking gear, a pretty sundress (albeit outdoorsy, but this is a general store after all) AND some freshly popped popcorn. The only thing holding me back from giving Mast a full 5 stars is the rather uncouth woman at the cash register the other day. I politely asked her if she would be able to wrap something for me, and she replied with something like "Just slap your wallet down and I'll stick some tape on this box. That's all I can do. GREAT GIFT IDEAS CAN BE FOUND HERE! This is a cool store because of its historical significance. The Greenville store has been a retail landmark in downtown since 1883 when it was a shoe and dry goods store. It was occupied by several retailers before it was restored to its 1920's style and expanded to carry clothing, cast iron cookware, toys, an extensive, (sometimes hard to find), candy collection and more. It is a great place to get your souvenirs and to find something special for your home. Just know that some items are priced like your typical tourist attraction, (for example, they were selling bags of grits and cornmeal for $7). Personally, I prefer to have articles of clothing instead of something that will be gone within a matter of weeks. They have a very nice selection of clothing for the entire family and they carry trusted brands like Merrell and Columbia so the items are of quality. They are currently having a sale as they start to make more room for their fall items. This is a great place to be able to find a gift for everyone in the family. The best part of the visit was going downstairs to the candy department to get some special, (difficult to find) treats. The candy is $8 per pound but I just had to get some of my favorites such as the vanilla Tootsie Rolls, Bit O Honey and most allusive of all the Coconut Longboy. I have not had a Long Boy since I was in first grade. I was absolutely shocked to see them and they are ALMOST as good as I remember, except back in the day, they actually used coconut! Don't forget to make sure that this is a designated stop during your trip. read more

Odd mix between an REI, VT Country Store, a candy counter, and a pharmacy/bath goods store. You can buy a down sleeping bag, Teva sandals, Burt's Bees lip balm, a 1/2 pound of mixed penny candy from a barrel, a jar of jam, and a children's book detailing the cute story of "Mice on Main" (the bronze mice sculptures strategicly placed in certain spots in downtown Greenville and serves as a fun scavenger hunt). Reminds me a little of the general stores that I love in Vermont, but with a little less polish that makes it more of a "destination/fun place to visit" and more like "nice to see but just once". read more
