I 100% agree with the negative reviews about Matt. And I fully expect him to argue with my review because arguing and failing to take accountability is what Matt does best. Here are the lowlights of my experience with Matt: --Communication was a nightmare. He responded to me while he was doing the job (a plus!) but he was more interested in complimenting his own work, man-splaining, and cracking corny jokes than he was in listening my concerns. Whenever there was a problem, he blamed someone else. ---Cost was very high. This is my fault , as I should have gotten more estimates. --The work was below average. For example, Matt installed a bifold door. He asked if I wanted it painted and when I asked if it would need to be painted, he said it was up to me. I opted to leave it unpainted but had no idea that Matt would leave pencil marks and scuffs all over it. By that time, I was so tired of interacting with him that I decided to paint it myself. Less than three months later, the door came off the track and the pin that holds it in place will not go back in. I've been trying to get him to come back to fix the door (as per his warranty) for two weeks. Ha! Who am I kidding? I could go on but you get the drift. Matt and his employee finished the job quickly, the work was neat, they picked up after themselves (offering to do more than their share of cleaning since he knew we have a toddler), and did a wonderful job communicating throughout the project to ensure we were on the same page and everything was to our liking. Took five days before they responded. Said "job was too small" (window leak). Yet their website indicates they do anything ... specifically including window repairs. My house is only 2 miles from their business address .. so it wasn't a big haul for them. I have been a customer of Master Handyman since the owner obtained licenses and insurance in both Nassau and Suffolk and hung up his "shingle." Matt and his team have painted, changed interior doors to install 6-panel custom-fitted upgrades, power-washed and stained/painted our deck twice now, hung curtain rods, a tricky shower rod, installed a large screen TV over a brick fireplace, de-tangled and corrected wiring for 2 TV's and have handled countless other small jobs with professionalism and meticulousness. He and his assistant even painted my place of business. Matt is a seasoned expert who thinks through each decision with the customer. For small jobs, I accumulate a few and call to have them handled at one time. For larger jobs, Matt stops by to assess the situation carefully and develop the best plan to do the work - right. I would say giving Matt 1 star is generous! Matt came highly recommended. When he came to my houses I showed him what needed to be done. Matt comes across as a very nice and respectful person. Matt will give you a scope of work but for someone that does not know about construction, he will take advantage of that person. He nickels and dimes the customer. Matt started with my front door. He did not show up with any insulation or moldings. I asked Matt to move a doorbell from one side of my front door to the other and he wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount of money after he did it. That door was also being installed and he ripped apart my wall while taking off the moldings. That wall had to be fixed. Matt wanted to charge me extra to pry a piece of 2x4 to open up a downstairs door frame to fit the new door. Matt has no discretion and Matt will never own up to his mistakes. I had interior doors that needed to be installed and he ruined 4 of them buy cutting the handle holes to high and over cutting and curving the doors out. You would think after ruining 1 door he would learn from his mistakes, but he didn't. He tries to patch up his mistakes by any means necessary so he doesn't have to pay extra or replace the items. Btw, the doors need to be replaced. He installed a rear patio door and ruined my siding when he had to extend the opening. The siding now needs to be replaced. Matt wanted to charge me additional cost for opening the frame more and an extra $100 for cutting a piece of wire mesh that really didn't need to be cut. I wish I could say the experience was nice but I would be lying. It was a nightmare. He decides that he will stop answering the customers phone calls and leaves snarky and arrogant remarks in his emails. Matts work is sloppy. Now I have to spend more money to fix what he touched. I read all these great reviews about his work and did not see any of it. He cons people and gets away with it. Find somebody else and don't fall victim to his work. read more

Matt and his crew were awesome! Matt knew we had a deadline to get the project done and he fit us in and completed it well before the deadline. We had several things done by them including a spare room, 2nd floor landing, basement and 2nd story deck reinforcement. This whole job was done to perfection. Matt's attention to detail is by far 2nd to none. Communication between Matt and us was totally amazing. They are so easy to work with and additional add ins to the work went smooth and communicated every step of the way. It was great to work with a contractor with a fairness and sensitivity to the home owner's needs. You do not normally get that in a contractor. Having a house built in 1905 is sometimes a major pain. Several years ago we had an extension added on and I, being a woodworker, wanted to build the molding tha connected the old to the new. However, years went by and I never took the time to do it. I eventually hired Matt having seen his woodworking capabilities. He built a custom tool to create new molding that matches the old, stained, finished and prepped the wood. With some thought and care he artfully created a smooth transition from the old to the new and it looks great. stay away from this man - when I first used him for a few things I did give him a 5 start review but he has completely overcharged me for the last round of work he did, probably close to double what it should have been and did not sup[ply me with an itemized bill showing the details of what I was being charged for, just a total at the bottom. When I asked him to give me the itemized bill he gave me some story about how he does not remember exactly and has no way to look it up and I should have told him before???HUH?? And still I called him two weeks ago to do a little work in the kitchen. I left three voice messages for him practically begging him to call me back and he has not done so. My feeling is that he knows he ripped me off and instead of admitting it and making it right, he would rather avoid me all together. We that is his prerogative and it is my prerogative as the client to post the truth about him and his loosely work ethics for others to be able to review. So sad...he is a rip off artist. read more

Matt is a truly skilled craftsman and his work exceeded our expectations. Before hiring him, my wife and I ripped up the outdated carpetting, underlying tile, and then the underlying mastic-covered plywood from our bedroom, which left us with just our sub-floor which was in pretty bad shape. It was very unlevel, full of squeaks, and somewhat warped. We plan to put hardwood flooring in there so we knew now was the time to fix the underlying issues to ensure the best end-result. We had a couple people give us estimates on installing new plywood, including some flooring companies, but after meeting Matt we knew he was the guy for the job. We were very impressed with his professionalism, knowledge, and assessment of the situation. When other guys said, "yea i'll put the plywood in for X dollars" and left me with a card, Matt took the time to explain exactly what we were dealing with and what exactly he would do to make sure everying was level, without squeaks, and ready to receive a hardwood floor free of foundational and aesthetic issues. His price was very reasonable as well. Matt is licensed and insured, and had me sign a contract which also put my mind at ease, knowing that I'm working with someone who takes their work seriously and isn't out to play games. As for the project, it was completed promptly, quickly, and thoroughly; I couldn't be more satisfied. I plan to hire Master Handyman Services in the near future for whatever else comes up in my home, as I know I'll be paying for quality and to have the job done right the first time. Two words of advice. Stay Away! I am writing the review as I hired Master Handyman Services after finding his business on yelp. I don't want any other yelp user to make the same mistake I made in hiring Master Handyman Services. I learned from this mistake to always ask any professional how long they have been in business for. Master Handyman Services is a new business and its owner has very limited experience as a professional handyman and small home project contractor. I would advise that you ask Master Handyman Services and its principle owner what type of experience they have for the job you are asking for. If you looking for minor jobs that can be done in one day he is as good as any other average handyman. If you looking for bigger project you a better of getting someone else to do your job. Issues we had with the project were the following: 1. Keeping appointments and constant rescheduling. 2. Work jobs that require a crew the owner does by him self. 3. Quality of work is below average. 4. Cleanliness and safety. Master Handyman Services left our house and garage a complete mess throughout the project. One instance the owner left in the middle of a project leaving tools and equipment right in the middle of the room. My wife and son came home to this and obviously my wife was shocked and pissed off that someone working in our house could do something like that. I have never seen anything like it. In our basement they left a construction light on an entire day. The entire house could have burned down. 5. Communication was a total disaster. It is impossible to get them on the phone. Get used to only dealing with them via email. I have personally seen him screen phone calls on his cell and decided to to answer. If you leave a voicemail you wont get a phone call back for days. You are forced to sit on your computer and wait an email. 6. The lack of honesty was something that got us very upset. The owner is never wrong and will argue with you over whether he was suppose to come on a certain date or not. What an impossible company to deal with. 7. You have to do a lot of work your self, like running to lumber yards and home depot to get items that they company request. It is by no means a full service company. We are left with an extraordinary amount of extra moldings in our house as per the company's recommendation for amount needed for the project. I am happy to discuss with any prospect client. Quality service at reasonable rates! I have been using Master Handyman Services for over 2 years and I have not 1 complaint! Matt is very professional and honest. He is very clear in his estimates and has even come under the estimated price for the job on occasion. Everything is written out in detail so there are no questions regarding hidden fees, which is important to me as I am a single mother who is not very familiar with costs of most repairs. I initially hired Matt to paint my kitchen. There was wall paper on the walls for over 14 years! Yikes! The walls were in bad shape and needed more repair than we thought. Matt patiently and skillfully spent time on each wall to make them smooth as silk. Matt charges by the job NOT by the day so I was surprised he took the time to make it perfect - but he did! Needless to say after seeing how conscientious he was I hired him to paint the rest of the house. The place looked immaculate after he left each day which was surprising because of all of the sanding etc. A few times he even let my dog out because he noticed her jumping on the back door. Who could ask for more!!! I have since used him for a masonry job and carpentry work. He is very knowledgeable about all facets of repair which has saved me a bundle! I was replacing our basketball hoop because the brackets kept bending causing the hoop to sag. He asked if he could take a look. He replaced the metal brackets with steel and the hoop has been perfect ever since! That was over 6 months ago! The cost of a new hoop is $800 so that was a huge savings for me! Another project he did was replacing a window. I was quoted almost $1000 to have a window replaced by the local glass store. It was double insulated and it was not a common size. Matt took the window to his glass store had it replaced with the same glass and reinstalled it at half of the price! I cannot say enough positive things about Matt and the work he does. It is very easy to get taken advantage of especially when you are not aware of the costs of repairs and services. I feel blessed to have come across someone I can trust to be in my home and provide me with a quality service. P.S. His wife has interior decorating experience and graciously offered to assist me in choosing the colors of paint for my house. Her guidance was greatly appreciated. Matt finished the job on a timely basis which surprised me from my past experiences with other contractors. Job was done to our satisfaction and he is open to discuss any issues. I would definitely use his services again. In addition about a month or two after the work was done we noticed some settling and a door wouldn't close. Where to start? Overall quality of the work was good. However, it took four months to complete two projects. Under Nassau County Regulations a contractor must provide a start and a finish date in the contract. This was never done. On initial inquiry Matt did respond promptly, but there were always "issues" in squeezing into his schedule (couldn't get to the lumber yard, picked up wrong wood, busy, etc.). Shouldn't it be the customer's schedule as more important? One job involved repair to some rotted wood on our front entrance porch. He took measurements, but lost them. I had to go out and measure the length and width of the needed boards. The contractor should be doing this. In the end it cost $400 to repair a square foot of the porch. I calculated out that based on the square footage of the house, a total floor repair would cost $760,000. The second job was to repair a bath tub leak from upstairs into my first floor kitchen. The contract states, "Enlarge ceiling opening in ceiling, attempt to find cause of leak. After the leak is fixed, install an entire new ceiling over the existing one using wall board . . ." Ceiling was opened up, but Matt could not find the leak and advised me to call a plumber. I had to pay a plumber to come in to diagnose the problem. The plumber found no pipes leaking. I had to trouble shoot the situation and found that I had to strip all of the grout around the tub and reseal it. This worked. Next, Matt advised me that the main beam under the tub was weakened by a previous owner's cutting of a notch in the beam. He advised me to contact his engineer to review. This cost me an extra $400. The beam was reinforced and the ceiling closed up. I was charged extra to completely redo the entire kitchen ceiling in wall board, although the contract stated, "replace entire ceiling." Upon reinstallation of the kitchen light fixture, Matt advised me that he detected some "back flow" on his meter. He believed it was an unsafe situation and advised me that I had to contact my electrician. My electrician said this was normal in older homes and completed the reinstallation of the light fixture. Of course, I had to pay another $150 for this. The work that Matt did accomplish was good, but pricey for actual work done. I ended up hiring three additional individuals (plumber, engineer and electrician) outside of the original contract and felt that most of the burden was on me to accomplish what needed to be done. I have used other handyman services and was surprised that Matt did not do plumbing, etc. He is a good person and very professional. I just thought the projects took way too long, cost more than contracted for, and involved many more outside contractors than needed. read more
