As other reviewers have already noted, the exterior is pretty gruesome - essentially the far other end of the spectrum from "fancy". The inside looks like a typical rural Pennsylvania old tavern - wood paneling, walls covered in beer signs, not very large. So what - the food and service are excellent. Very friendly and attentive staff, large portions, everything arrived quickly, nice selection of beers. My wife had scallops with a side of broccoli - seemed risky ordering scallops there but they were delicious. I had penne pasta with meatballs, obviously homemade and great, although the sauce was a bit too sweet for my taste. I'm guessing Mastracchio's is popular with locals, and if you're passing through and not bothered by the look of the place, you'll be glad you gave it a try - we were. read more

Horrible attitudes. We called ahead and asked if they could sit 5 people - now we did call at 8p but they said they would take us until 845p. We walked in and the waitress and bartender were VERY rude and had an attitude about sitting us. we were there at 815p. I'll never go here again. the service was HORRIBLE. Not only had an attitude but they cut us off and said "you can try Mastracchios West" which is 15 mins the other direction. I'm convinced the only reason this place is still open is because Newport only has pizza shops available. read more

My family and I are from Texas and traveling from State College (visiting our daughter who is a student) and o airport in Philadelphia. I started looking for a place to eat on our route and found this restaurant. We weren't sure about it based on the looks of the building but we decided to give it a try. Oh my goodness, we LOVED it! The server was sweet and attentive and the food was delicious! The group had the chicken parm, Speedies, spaghetti, and the southwest chicken panini - all tasted amazing! Food portions are large, so plan to take home leftovers. Our only disappointment is that we live over 1600 miles from this great place! read more

So, I don't give reviews easily, and I tend to base them on my expectations versus the results...which is why Mastracchio's deserves my five stars. We had a hard day of motorcycle riding, didn't have any camping reservations for this night, and found availability at the campsite next to this restaurant. Checking into the main office of the campsite at the building visible from the street sets a certain expectation of the building as a whole, the same building the restaurant is in. But the minute you step into the restaurant you're like "wait, what just happened??" First, the interior reminds you of the classic Italian restaurants you remember as a kid...if you're from northern VA I'm talking about Pistone's in Seven Corners. Great beer menu...more than I expected, a wide range, and many favorites. Super nice bartender...and make sure you use a coaster! ;-) Next, the service. Our server spoke to the specials better than nearly every other I've encountered, and that level of attention extended through the whole meal. I mean, in a very short amount of time I went from skeptical to wow. And I also enjoyed the lightest, fluffiest crab cake I've ever had. Even after reading some of the "so-so" reviews, we were still going to give this place a try. Drove 4+ miles out the Juniata Parkway, and finally found it. I took one look at the building and drove right back out of the parking lot. Restaurant is on the "lower level" (basement) of the building with access off a lower unpaved parking area. The outside of the building is filthy - covered with webs, dead bugs, etc. There was one beer light in a window; 2 cars in the parking lot. You could see the windows for the upper level - dirty, broken blinds, generally gross. Sorry, not for me. Drove back into Newport and found something much better. read more

It's interesting to see that people give a place a bad review based on pulling into the parking lot having never experiencing the service, the food, or anything else other than the exterior. Sure it looks a little shangy/divey on the outside, but don't judge a book by its cover. The GENERAL STORE ALONG THE MAIN ROAD, IS NOT THE ENTRANCE! From the side parking lot, the door is on the side of the building. Hence any type of signage you see around that entrance. It is small inside, so I recommend reservations ahead of time. On to MY REVIEW.... I've been a patron here a few times over the years, and I was first introduced to the establishment by a local. Every time I have been here(typically in a group of 8 or more), our food has always been hot, the service is EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD, and the craft beer is always some of the best selections you can find in the area. There is also a patio/deck area outside that is used during the warmer months. Why a 4 out of 5? I'm a true believer in that there's always room for improvement with anything(-.5). It is small, so it can heat up in the summertime with all the people and the door(s) constantly opening(-.5). CHEERS! read more

This is a diamond in the ruff. This restaurant is hidden away in the ground floor of a building that is run down. However, the restaurant is clean and has a friendly inviting atmosphere. They have a variety of foods on the menu with many homemade options. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely go back when we're passing though. read more

We found this place using the Yelp app. The seafood bisque, broiled scallops and homemade ginger dressing were delicious! Fiance had the fisherman's platter and enjoyed it, too. We were here around 4PM and our server was also the chef and bartender. He had a ton of recommendations and details to share about his food. An awesome experience, for sure. We'll be back! read more

We love Mastracchios! Friends of ours we visit often in New Bloomfield turned us on to this beer lover's gem and we've been creating *excuses* to travel this way and stop in ever since. The beer selection is fantastic and incredibly reasonably priced. Lou, the owner, knows and love beers, and it shows. We try to plan our visits at *off* times, just so we can enjoy chatting with Lou at the bar. Lou's daughter (Vanessa), Ann, and Tristan have been our servers/bartenders in the past and have all nailed it, as well. We drink here more than we eat here, but have enjoyed all of the homemade foods we've ordered, too. Yes, it's in the *basement*. Yes, it's a little off the beaten path. This is a great little restaurant tucked in along the Juniata River between Newport and Duncannon. It's just a small restaurant/bar but the food is great with amazing specials that you would expect at much larger metropolitan restaurants. DO NOT EAT HERE!!! My family ate here last night, my fiance ordered the fettuccine with shrimp. The shrimp were not fully cooked and there was almost no cream sauce on the pasta. He literally took two bites, sent the dish back and ordered something else. When the bill arrived the owner REFUSED to remove the fettuccine from the total (and we spent $140, this was not a small bill). The owner said there was nothing wrong with the dish, if there had been something "Like a hair in it" he would have removed it from the bill. So instead of removing a $16.99 charge, he lost my family's business for good. I worked as a waitress for 3 years, I would NEVER have charged a table for a dish they sent back. It's also worth noting that I used the ladies room and as soon as I touched the handle on the toilet to flush, the handle came off and clattered to the floor!! This place leaves a lot to be desired, in the building itself AND in the management!! read more

I got a comment from someone who knows the restaurant (I guess, because he doesn't actually tell his affiliation) He said that the actual restaurant was down some stairs. Didn't see any stairs, didn't see any signs . . . We came directly from the parking lot, straight over to the front of the building facing the street. Proprietor, my suggestion is to put up some signs directing people to your door. I wonder how many other travelers may have walked away because they didn't know where to find you. read more

Have eaten here many times. It's a little hole in the wall but well worth the effort to find it. Have never had a bad meal here; the steaks are perfectly cooked the Italian food is authentic. The beer selection is many, many pages and thoughtfully chosen, and the service is great. read more
