It was my dad's 86th birthday and all he wanted was to come to Tavern on the Hill for dinner. We had early reservations and when we arrived, we were greeted like family. The reserved table had been chosen with not only the size of our party considered, but also to accommodate two wheelchairs. Our server warmly greeted us and so our celebratory evening began. While my dad had a cocktail, I ordered a bottle of wine for the table. I have no problem (well, a little problem) with the markup of wine in a restaurant. The wine at the Tavern was exceptionally marked up. I ordered a 2014 Tempranillo. I do like a good Tempranillo. I was also intrigued by its $59 price. I thought I had found a hidden gem on the menu...I thought wrong. The bottle was presented to my husband who was across the table from me - it should have been presented to me since I ordered it. He was also not given a sommelier's taste, the wine was just poured for each of us. I'm not an absolute stickler about etiquette, but for such a high-end restaurant, this was out of place. I'm sure you are thinking that I just need to chill, and I'd normally agree with you, but we were not given the wine that I had ordered. Had it been properly poured, I would have noticed. It was nothing close to what I had ordered. It was the wrong varietal, wrong brand, wrong vintage, wrong country of origin. The only thing that was right was that it was a red. I knew that it didn't taste like what I had expected, but, without seeing the bottle, why would I ever expect to be served the completely wrong bottle of wine? Even Olive Garden gets it right. This should never have happened at the Tavern. I don't know what I expected from the server when I brought it to her attention. I didn't expect to be brushed off. The whole thing was just completely unacceptable. At least it had a similar price. As for the food, it was ok - nobody had anything that was really "wow". My husband and I shared the flambéed Greek cheese. It was blah and even the presentation was just meh. My dad's steak was tough as was my veal. My husband said his swordfish was cooked perfectly but had no flavor, even with its topping of shrimp. There was absolutely no effort given to the plating of any of the food. There was not enough bread served for everyone at the table and no effort was made to replenish it. The butter was a handful of individual packets strewn on the bread plate. Again, plating. The serving sizes were large - we all had lunch the next day. I didn't bring in the cake that I bought. We all decided that paying a plating charge that was over half of the cost of the cake was ridiculous. We ate it at home. My dad's special dinner was $600 for the 6 of us. If things had been on point, I wouldn't have batted my eyes (too much), but dinner was far from on point. My dad was happy that he got to spend time with his family and I'm blessed that I was able to share this day with him. But, I'm also disappointed that the Tavern on the Hill did not deliver. At all. Meh! The food was good. The service was great. But the ambiance was not there. The menu was a sheet of paper. Not in a folios or even laminated. Just a plain white sheet of paper. They don't have a drink menu. The drinks we asked for mojitos they don't make in the winter. We asked what they have and again were told they can make anything... except margaritas or mojitos. The bread was 2 slices of the local grocery store bread. The butter was mismatched pads of butter so cold you couldn't spread it. The steak was good and done to perfection, but the salad was bagged salad from the local grocery store with one slice of tomato on top and some over seasoned old bread crusts. The roasted vegetables were cooked to mush, so better to eat with a spoon. The baklava cheese cake was delicious, but again the baklava was frozen and the cheese cake was thawed. Would not recommend this restaurant. My husband and I were there before and it was ok. Recently we went there again with 3 other couples to find out that this establishment went from ok to downright bad. Would never go again! My lobster tail was so tough and tasteless as was my husbands. My husbands steak was of lesser quality than you could get at a chain steak house. The prices are outrageous!!!! A few things. This is a fine dining restaurant. Don't order your steak well done. No. There isn't any salt on the table; your food is seasoned perfectly. Ok. The ambiance; maybe not ultra modern, but it's classic and tasteful. Now the food; we had blackened tenderloins in a red pepper sauce; extremely tender and tasty. As far the entrees; I had Sauteed Pamplona with lump crab in a lemon sauce that was spectacular. My wife had the crab cake. Again, spectacular. My salad was a Caesar with a homemade dressing that had just enough garlic. Our server was attentive and pleasant. This was not a cheap dinner but an extraordinary dining experience. We had a great dinner in Enola on ourvway back from Philadelphia. We have been traveling through Enola for year and never realized that there is an excellent dinner restaurant up the hill from the main road. We v had appetizers (fresh sautéed mussels and Saltmbaca Flambe), salads (house salads with Ceasar dressing and a tomato and mozzarella salad), and two entrées (pork chops with pureed potatoes and lobster tails with rice pilaf). I took home a slice of a Greek filo cheesecake to have four lunch with one of the two lobster tails that I didn't eat this evening. The menu here also leans old school, emphasizing meat and seafood classics like steaks, lobster, oysters Rockefeller, shrimp cocktail. The food and service are both excellent. This is a great spot for a special night out On my last visit, we were especially pleased to be seated in what appears to be a new, covered patio area. The space was nicely heated despite February temperatures and looks promising for more casual summer meals, appetizers, and drinks. It's actually in the back portion of the property and not too visible from the exterior--but it is most definitely there and quite charming. Pandemic prevention measures were solid with plenty of distance between tables, mask wearing, and sanitizing between guests. read more

Been here before and have been disappointed but thought we would try it again for Mother's Day. Well, unfortunately we were disappointed again. My wife's chicken dish was good, but my seafood chemise was not as advertised. It was advertised as "crab and lobster chemise", but it was simply stuffed with various seafoods and little crab and lobster. The drinks were very expensive, with my simple orange crush at $15.00. When we got our bill, it had a $4 charge for a salad which was included with the meal. I think this place is unethical and we will not be back! read more

Surf and turf with a touch of Greek cuisine... nice little find here along the Susquehanna and it is up on a hill. Establishment is a little older looking but nice and a bit eclectic. It is very pricey but the food is well worth the price. Everything is made to order from fresh/ never frozen seafood and meats. Sides were also delicious. No kids menu but if you ask they do offer a few choices suitable for kids that aren't in the menu. My kiddo got the spaghetti and meatballs with a side of green beans. My husband treated me here for our first dinner out since 2020! It also happened to be International Women's Day. I have to say that being from New York City, I am super impressed with the quality of food and the general ambiance of this place! Vicky - our server - was extremely friendly, personable and engaging! There was another lady working there, with short blonde hair who helped out at times and she was also terrific! I had the Atlantic Char and It was so delicious that I had to stop myself from scarfing it down like a cavewoman and take my time to savor it. The asparagus that came with it was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The Long Island Iced Tea was PERFECT. I will definitely be visiting this wonderful place again! Well I am 2 for 2 with my visits. I am a former chef and now do consulting. I want to tell you all this place has the best menu and best preparation in a restaurant I have come across in years and I travel 40 weeks out of the year and eat out 3-4 times a week usually on a business tab which means not average chain dinner. The appetizer menu is spectacular with classics and some unusual. Fried oysters and sweetbreads wow. Mix of steaks/chicken, seafood and pasta entrees and dinner salads. Owner is an impressive hands on chef which makes all the difference. You will pay for perfection but it's well worth if quality and spectacular matters to you I am usually alone so I like to eat at the bar. Supper great atmosphere for doing that. Bartender is very nice knowledgeable professional knowing when to give space and when and how to engage. It's a lost art in most every place except here. Went here for date night. Our server had a great warming personality and was well knowledge about the menu. The food was out of this world. The grilled calamari was the best I ever had. Sad. This place used to be much better. The menu is dated in 1988, and so is the attitude. With my $40+ entree I simply asked if I could have Caesar dressing on a side salad and the answer - no. No, you need to pay the 12 bucks for a Caesar salad. The bread, the entree, the sides, all just basic and mostly bland. My expensive martini came in a glass my grandmother would use, but it cost 13 dollars. If I was a betting man, the over under on this place closing is 2 years from this date. Needs new management, needs new menu items, and needs to get rid of the pretentious attitude that isn't warranted. If you want a classic American place, there are so many other better options. The only people going here will be people that thought it was good 20, 30 or more years ago. read more

My wife and I have visited this restaurant once a month for years. The Harrisburg Area does not have a lot of fine dining. We have put up with the over priced out dated menu for the last time. I called for reservations as usual, told them who I was and we always dine in the bar area. I told them 3 for the bar area and had him read back to me the reservation so no mistake was made. When we arrived they told us it's really busy and we had to dine in a small room that had a party of 30 at a table. It was a very special night for us, and I was very disappointed. First time here. I was looking for a good steak and someplace new to go for my birthday dinner. We were a group of 14 with some who had previously worked in the restaurant business (one actually at this restaurant) and one who had owned two restaurants. We were seated in a separate room and had two servers, one for each side of the table. Our reservation was for 7:00 on a Saturday evening. While we were in a separate room, we could see the other dining area through the windows. Other than us, the restaurant was empty by 8:00. The paper menu identified wine incorrectly. One listed and ordered, and a different one was presented (a bottle so clearly we could see it was different wine). They were from the same winery but different price points. One server was taking appetizer orders and the other was taking dinner orders. The bread was simply sliced bread. Everyone was served dinner except me. I was told they were preparing it special since it was my birthday. All the others were done eating before I finally got my dinner. I would have expected my meal to be comped or, at the least, half off the price. But there was no compensation. The food was not on par with the prices. The tuna and lobster tail were overcooked. The dessert options were uninspired. Nothing chocolate so most of us got ice cream, which was two scoops of ice cream in a glass with chocolate syrup on the accompanying plate. Then when the checks came, not one of them was correct. I don't think I need to say it but none of us will be going back nor will it be someplace recommended to others. Maybe this is why this restaurant would have been closing at 8:00 on a Saturday night if we weren't there. When you spend this kind of money, you expect more. read more

We came here because we were in town for our anniversary and wanted a nice place. We saw this place had high reviews online and looked moderately fancy with a dress code so it had to be nice. We got the caprese and the tomatoes were mushy and there were 8 slices of tomatoes and 3 tiny pieces of cheese. We got entrees and my salmon honestly was delicious. My husband's food was wrong (they gave him a truffle cooked steak instead of a regular steak) but it was cooked the correct temperature. They asked if he would like mushrooms and onions on the side of that and he said yes. When it came out it was a bowl of mushrooms and onions and it was priced on the bill as 7$! Without telling us it would be extra! My husband ate maybe two scoops of the soup sized bowl of them. Inside was nothing to write home about... Under construction with no ceiling in most of the rooms and dusty unkempt seats and carpet. This place didn't have any sign that said oh sorry under construction so it was quite alarming to walk into. We both couldn't wait to get out of there. Service was inconsistent and food took a while. They bring all the food out on a rolling tray for the whole floor... Why am I getting my food and waiting for a larger groups food when we orderered first and we're just two people? Dined here on 12/24. Food was average at best. I was with a very large party and the consensus was that we should not go back for future events. While I certainly don't mind paying $36 for a good steak, it was fatty and I ordered a side of potatoes and I got one slice and a quarter of a slice. The steak was advertised with mushrooms mine came with zero mushrooms another member of my party got three, and yet another with zero. Desserts were all terrible with the exception of the baklava cheesecake at $10 I was expecting something that was a bit above average. I've been here before but not for years and there is a huge decline from my previous visit. I'd actually like to give this a 4.5. I avoided this for a while because it seemed like a townie place that would attract an older clientele looking for a simple menu. I was wrong. I don't like to admit it, but I can. This place is upscale and excellent. The service is impeccable. This is like one of those old school steakhouses. Meat, fancy things on the menu, and top shelf pours at the bar. They offer things that are classy standards that should stay classy standards - escargot, shrimp cocktail, smoked fish, snapper soup, french onion soup, etc. The even get exotic with a conch chowder and a roasted garlic soup. God bless this place because they serve one of the best salads, old school style - a Roquefort and Romaine salad. Note that I did not say Blue Cheese. This is the real deal. So rare to find these days. If you didn't get enough Roquefort on your salad (and let's be honest - who ever does?) you can order a Filet Mignon with a Roquefort Cheese Crust. Wow! It doesn't get any better than that. However, you also can't miss with the lamb chops, the rib eye, the crab cake, etc. The chicken with vodka and pepper sauce is also good. I've never had anything bad. Don't overlook the seafood. The wine list is spiffy. Seriously spiffy. However it is pricy. The wine steward isn't the best - particularly when it comes to personality. This place is right up there with the big, fancy Midwest steak houses I have visited over the years. You know the ones I'm talking about in places like Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis, etc. The ones that charge you $45.00 and that's just for the meat? Sides are extra? Perfect place for a first date or a 50th anniversary. Also a nice place for a family that wants a very nice dinner out. The atmosphere is elegant. My first time for my wife and myself at Tavern on the Hill. It started out great...hostess was very nice. We ordered...this is where the trouble began. I realize we are not the class of diner I'm sure Tavern on the Hill typically gets.....but, we have opinions and tastes. I do not like a steak that is not done....I want my steak Medium Well to Well done. It was Medium (very pink). Also, my potato side amount to three little pieces of potato about the size of a nickel. Now on to my wife.....she ordered Tuna....again, I realize many of you like your Tuna Steak purple and raw in the middle....my wife, like me....asked for Well Done. We were told it would dry it out and was told we would get Medium. My wife was not happy either. Once I was finished, the waitress came over to take my plate and then took my wife's plate without asking if she was done. She said, "I'll box this up for you". She then brought the box back asking if we were ready for our check.....Or....did you want coffee and dessert? Again, I felt like we were being pushed to the finish line and get us out of there. We did end up having dessert and coffee... it was good. We were just disappointed in how we were treated.....We felt like we didn't belong and it was being made clear by our waitress , we didn't. Again, can't say enough about hostess and another blonde lady in red jacket who came over and asked if we needed anything.
