I initially put my youngest, out of control dog, Stormy, into their Board & Train Program, while I was going out of state. I could not get Stormy to walk on a leash, without choking herself. Because of this, she was under socialized. She was fearful of many things also. They ended up keeping her for 3 weeks. I had a couple "check in" one on one Training with her Trainer, Tiffany. At the first session, Stormy, was walking on leash in a "heel" position. Tiffany had also taught her "place", "stay" and "break" to release her from her "stay". Stormy was so much calmer when I brought her home. Before training, she would come in from the yard and jump over the back of the couch. If I was sitting on the couch, a few times, she landed on my head, on her way to the other side. She also jumped a lot. After coming home, she was calm inside and stopped jumping all over. It was a "joy" to take her on a walk and have her calmly maintain her "heel" position.She was much more enjoyable and was finally able to get out of"in the world"! This was entirely due to Tiffany's training. Tiffany was very good with her, very knowledgeable about dog behavior and cared for Stormy. She was professional, checked in with me to see how I was feeling about Stormy's behavior, gave helpful advice and answered any questions I had. In addition, I received daily photos of Stormy from Heather. That was awesome because I missed her and it was nice to get updates on Stormy's progress. Additionally, the Facility is very clean and everyone working there was very nice. Michael was very nice too. The groomer, Jacob, was nice and professional also. The Board and Train was expensive but after Tiffany gave me back a dog I could fully enjoy, I'd say it was worth it! Matan has a wonderful operation going there and I highly recommend them. My Veterinarian in Camarillo, gave me Matan's Card and said she'd gotten positive feedback on them. I also brought my "dog reactive", Dog, Bon Bon in for 3 week Board and Train. Tiffany, also trained her too! She did an amazing job with Bon Bon also. Bon Bon, was a challenging case for her because, of all things, she told me Bon Bon, could be a bit stubborn! LOL. Even though Bon Bon, was a completely different personality than Stormy, Bon Bon, was wonderful walking on leash when she returned. She's also not as reactive. I was even able to walk both of them together, which was a first and was also my original goal for training! My "pack walk"! Tiffany told me to wait to try to walk them together. There was no way I was getting out the door with just one! They both did remarkably well. At first Bon Bon wanted to walk ahead but I corrected her and she walked in a "heel" on my right side. I was finally able to get them both "heeling" on my left side, with Stormy closest to me. Yay! That's exactly what I wanted when I sent them both to "board and train". Our dog Lemon has been boarding here for years. She is a highly reactive dog that loves people but gets stressed out by other dogs and loud unexpected noises. Whenever we board her here she is taken such good care of. It allows me to relax and know she is in the best hands. I sent my dog Stella to a 2 week board and train a few months ago and debated leaving a review at that time, but after thinking about it, I do feel people should know as much info as possible before making a decision on where to send their dog. For context, Stella is an energetic shepherd/mal with a great temperament who learns incredibly quickly, and in our home we are purely positive reinforcement and force free. The reason I am giving 2 stars is that the actual staff that I interacted with was very kind and polite, so I don't think these are bad people in any way. My review is purely on the fact that I don't feel I was fully informed on the training style and the results were very disheartening. I was actually out of town and due to care changes had to make this appointment a bit rushed, so I will definitely say that I should have done more research. What drew me to this facility is that they say that all dogs have their own path and are individuals and that they can tailor training around what you need, so I was hoping I could ask for the style I prefer, which is all positive reinforcement. When they sent the recommended equipment list and the initial info, it had treat pouches, treats, place mats, etc. It did not list the prong collar that would be placed on my dog for the duration of her training. I expressed very clearly that my dog would never wear an e-collar and that I don't practice aversive or punitive techniques with my dogs, which I assumed would be honored on my dog's "individual journey." I guess I should have said verbally at that time that that extends to prong collars, choke chains, etc. My dog is pretty fluffy, so I actually couldn't see the prong collar in any of the photos that were sent to us along the way or I would have spoken up earlier. We finally went for a progress check a few days before pickup and I saw that Stella was being "corrected" in a prong collar and there was very little positive reinforcement being used. I was pretty vocal in that session about my dislike for those methods and did see more treats and praise being used upon pickup a couple days later, so I give them credit for at least listening to me a bit in that time. In videos I was sent, dogs are being sent to a down position by stepping on their leads with a prong collar on. I don't believe in this method and am so sad my Stella spent 2 weeks like this. As is often the case, trainers will tell you prong collars don't hurt the dogs, however in order for it to be a successful training modality, it has to hurt them. That is how it stops the behavior. So it is either ineffective or painful, both of which seem like a bad experience for a dog. At my pickup session where skills are transferred, I had already known it was a waste of over $2,000, because I wouldn't be purchasing the prong collar, wouldn't be continuing collar pops and punitive training, and wouldn't be following the new rules like Stella not being allowed on furniture. I told them in that moment that Stella was family and I wanted her on the couch with me and the bed with me and she would never wear a prong collar again. I wanted her happy, content, and relaxed, and she was anything but while in training. When I picked up Stella, she was anxious and stressed, exhibiting many signs of discomfort and bolted out without looking back. She stayed stressed and uncomfortable for 2 weeks, being wary around every member of our family and our other dog. It broke our hearts. My husband, who had previously been more ambivalent on training styles changed his tune after seeing the effects of this training style and is now even more on board with force free. It is scientifically proven that punitive training, or "balanced training" as it is often called, which uses a mix of reinforcement and aversives, increases anxiety in dogs and reduces their quality of life. I knew this at the time and truly hoped they would honor my wishes for only positive reinforcement. I will definitely put the blame on myself for not being more explicit in the initial conversation and not trusting my gut more. The conditions that made me send her there were specific to that situation and complicated due to being out of the state at the time. I spent months rebuilding trust with Stella and am now working with a force free positive reinforcement trainer and seeing amazing results and a happy, confident dog. I will say I did not get to meet Matan, because he was out of town at the time, but if his other trainers are using the same methodology, I assume he practices the same form of training. Everyone is allowed to do any type of training they want for their dog, but I wanted to post this review in case anyone was looking for an individual path for their dog that was force free or positive reinforcement and let you know that this is not it. read more

I had two puppies that were rescued I wanted them to have the best possible chances with training and socialization. I have been to other training and boarding places/people in the past I've experienced the good and the bad. Matan has had the best outcomes for me with these 2 siblings. Everyone that works here is on the same page and utilizes the same structured commands with the pets to reinforce the training. My dogs have had the overnight training, day camp, and the group training. The staff is wonderful and if theres any questions or concerns its addressed and taken care of. Can't teach an old dog new tricks, think again! My dog Reggie is an 8 yr 2mo. old German shepherd whom I've had for his entire life and has been mainly untrained. His behavioral issues have included leash pulling, impulse control, aggression/ resource guarding on pillows/cushions, extreme reactivity towards other dogs & excessive barking. In fear I'd have to cross the street anytime a dog was walking towards us; he'd pull Like a reindeer anytime he saw a squirrel or a rabbit, jump on house guests and aggressively bark at the Neighbors dog through the fence. I procrastinated like a college student on getting training in his earlier years and thought I could tolerate this for the duration of his life as I'd heard there's little obedience training you can do for senior dogs (Little did I know). I finally hit my wits end deciding It's not fair to me or to Reggie so I took him to Matan whom I met as a client a year ago. Reggie went on a 4 week board and train which allowed me to take a much needed vacation. I was sent regular updates on his progress and within a week he seemed like a new dog being highly motivated by food as well as following basic commands. By week two I was surprised to see him walking (heel position) & training side by side with another dog with no reactivity. The trainer Benny in the video is a dog whisperer. Week 3 & 4 he's learning to stay in place/recall with other distractions and Matan even took him to a mall which is something I thought I'd never be able to do. The game changer has been his engagement with me and by the end of the program I know I'm totally relaxed with him and as a result he trusts me. Now after the training, As Matan says this is the Dojo, real world will be different. The Training builds the ship for you but you still have to do the work. After trying a few private trainers, I had given up all hopes of ever getting my furry baby to socialize and be calm and happy around strangers. I felt this training program was ok for the basics. I enrolled my 7 month old dog in the $2400 two week Board and Train and told them I really wanted to focus on dog aggression and reactivity. Let's start with some good stuff. They taught my dog all the basics. Sit, stay, come, heel, out, place. He does well with those and seemed to learn them quick. His leash manners were excellent before he was enrolled in the training, since I walked and biked with him multiple times a day. He has been out for about 3 weeks and follows the commands well. I still train him daily as a refresher, and as time goes on, he is getting better and better. Now some of my not so great experience. About 3 days into the training they contacted me saying they were concerned about my dogs couch and said it may be because he was barking so much. It may have been the new environment, since my dog rarely barks at home. I had to take him out of classes and bring him to the vet to get checked. He was given the all clear and returned a day later. THEN my dog caught Kennel Cough about a week in, and was out for two weeks on antibiotics. So his two week training was broken up into four weeks overall. It kind of ruined his momentum. When I picked him up, Spencer mentioned a week before another dog had to go home because of kennel cough. I think this was a rare occurrence. The facility is fairly clean. I am sure things like this happen when there are several dogs in one area. Kind of like when your kid gets sick at school. It is not he schools fault. They did add an extra day onto the training, but that was not really much. While my dog was recovering, I still noticed how reactive he was with other dogs during his vet visits, so when I brought him back, I asked that they please focus more on his reactivity. No fault of the trainers in this case, as I now realize they seem to have a set program that they follow, and don't seem to stray too far from it. When I picked him up, they went over the commands with me and it went well. He was focused and following commands through the session. I asked them what could be done about the dog aggression and reactivity and they said the doggy day care may be a good option, and that they would check with Spencer (who runs the daycare) to see if my dog would be a good fit. Spencer said that my dog would not be a food fit because he barks too much. Ummm...ok...I guess? What are some other options? They then mentioned one on one classes where they could focus on my dog and slowly bring in other dogs to see what the issues were. In the end they said my dog was not aggressive, but just reactive. Well, I wish I would known this in the beginning because I would have gladly spent 3k on one on one training instead of $2400 on a two week board and train I probably could have done myself. If you are looking to Matan Dog Training for the basics, go ahead and enroll in the two week board and train. But, if you need something more specific, I would go with their one on one training. If you have a highly driven dog like myself, I would definitely make it crystal clear to their staff what you want and make sure they feel comfortable handling them. I am now in the difficult position of trying to deal with my dogs reactivity. I know they are familiar with my dog there, and would be good candidates in working with his reactivity. At the same time, I am not sure I am confident in their ability to handle such a highly driven dog. From what I have seen, they seem to be ok with the basics, but have not done much about his reactivity and did not really have any sort of info about how they would resolve his reactivity aside from enrolling in the one on one classes. read more

We sent our three dogs for the 2 week program as we were just fed up with the leash aggression of Montgomery(the white dog) and Bacon's(little dog) stranger aggression. Bella(the big brown dog) was already a great dog, but she could get riled up by the other two. Our dog pack was only as good as the weakest link(most of the time that was Bacon or Montgomery) It was a lot of money, but our dogs' behavior had us resenting them and we knew the dogs needed a full reset, in home lessons wasn't going to cut it. Today, our dogs are like different animals. On leash, the behavior has improved exponentially, no more pulling or insane dog aggression. At home, our little dog Bacon used to struggle with strangers, just insane barking and nipping at anyone, regardless of how often they came over. Right now we've got 4 kids at home on a playdate, the old Bacon would be losing her shit and attacking anyone she could get her hands on. New Bacon is being led around the house on her leash by my wife and hasn't barked at anyone yet. Coming in, our dog didn't have any major issues but was quite barky and lacked obedience. Over the phone, Spenser explained to us patiently what we could expect out of the 2 weeks training and what methods they used. During the mid point checkin we were able to see better what we could do better as dog owners to guide our dog and set her up for success. We also saw the level of attention and care our dog got at Matan, After the 2 weeks, our dog came back more obedient, but most of all, we have new techniques we can use to continuously train our dog. Our dog was here for three weeks of training and we asked for him the #1 thing to be leash trained. He's not. Still can't properly walk on the leash without pulling. Don't waste your money. They missed multiple days of notes and trainings, switching trainers, unprofessional and lack of communication, constantly switching around. Huge disappointment. Not worth the money. In response to the reply- trainers being overloaded with work is not anything I should have to worry about or a reason for improper training. Not only did you fail to properly teach my dog how to walk on a leash in three weeks the behaviors were not corrected. Warning to all, don't waste your money. I came to Matan after doing my homework looking, calling trying to find the best for my boy, and myself. The minute I reached to him, I knew I had found the one. I was in a very bad place. Writing this is very emotional, remembering how my sweet boy was, and so was I. He is a busy man but he took the time to hear me out with what I was dealing with at the time. We took our two-year old Great Pyrenees rescue in for dog training when he started marking in the house. Our first trainer was fine, but she left Matan Dog Training before the series of private classes was finished. After she left, everything went downhill fast. They seemed confused about what marking meant even though the first thing he did on two visits was mark something at their facility. One group session trainer thought I needed a shock collar for this while another thought I meant "potty training." One entire session was an hour lecture from the trainer on how to housebreak a dog, which as a lifelong dog owner, I already knew. That session was credited back to us by extending the paid sessions another week. However, we never got that far. Two private sessions were canceled at the last minute - one while driving to the facility and one when we arrived. When the second one was canceled, I said we were unhappy and not ready to come back so Matan called. He talked me into returning and extended the sessions by one over the lecture session previously described. Our new trainer (who had previously lectured us on "potty training") seemed completely uninterested in my dog during the two group sessions we attended. During the private sessions, he seemed not to understand much about Great Pyrenees behavior and the dog got very agitated and hostile toward the trainer with his use of the prong collar and the session ended early - we never went back and no refund or follow up phone call with Matan occurred. I continued to get What'sApp messages about whether I was planning to attend the group classes until I wrote - "Please stop texting me." The dog knew a command for sit prior to theses classes and subsequently learned down and place (albiet for short amounts of time) for $1,395.00. Based on my experience, I would say that anyone choosing this company should be ready to be comfortable with hand-feeding your dog everything he/she eats which is a slow, time-consuming, slobbery, sloppy mess, especially with a 110 1b dog. You also need to be comfortable with the idea that you withhold food unless the dog works for it. This bothered me a lot having been through obedience and agility training with a dog many years earlier where that was not a component of training. People need to be aware of the fact that Matan seems only minimally involved and issues have to be significantly escalated to get his attention. Very little communication seems to happen among the staff so they understand the issues related to a particular dog/customer. Some of the lack of communication seemed to be unfairly blamed on the initial trainer, because scheduling or anything else after she left was clearly not her responsibility. Some of the lack of communication relates to the fact that communication involves listening to the customer instead of assuming that you know everything. If you want to withhold food (sometimes for mulitple days), hand-feed your dog all of the food and learn basic commands then you will be fine. If your issue is more complex, seek something else. read more

The Maton Dog helped tamed my two energetic Labsky. The juveniles need more training. Adopted as siblings, the Husky is really out of control, scattered brain and playfully dominant. The two are energetic and strong. They are now calmer and I followed through by scheduling train before feeds and putting them back in crates for an hour 3X daily, after an hour of exercise. It helps keep them calm, stop chewing up sprinklers and backyard furnishings. read more
