Matanzas Beach, 5 PM in July, cool and beautiful

This is a really beautiful beach and it has a lifeguard. It also has a drive in entrance. There are various prices for driving onto the beach and a 4 x 4 is recommended or mandatory depending on the day. We went there yesterday in a four wheel drive truck. The sign said " recomended" but I would say the parking area sand was very soft so I would recommend the four wheel drive. My grandchildren had a great time boogie boarding because the ocean is shallow for quite a ways yet there are small waves that are just big enough for a toddler or young child to catch a wave and ride it in. It is mid July and the water temperature was 83 degrees.

Totally mucked it up! We parked on the inter-coastal side and took the boardwalk down to the waterfront. There were all sort of people out there- camping tents pitched, hammocks strung, a father and son clam digging, people fishing and some just enjoying the sunshine! Tide was out and I was wearing my boat shoes- so I went traipsing through the muck- careful not to slip! There were jellyfish scatter around, tiny snails, plenty of birds finding a good meal and more! Boaters cruising by, even some jet skiers! MJ and I were both lost in our own worlds- taking pictures and not saying much. Once we started heading back to the beach- we stopped and chatted up the clammers- they had had a slow hour, but were finally striking clams! Pretty cool. We spent the next 15 minutes trying, and not being very successful- to get the mud off our shoes. I shimmied in the sand, stomped up the boardwalk, scraped the sides of the shoes on the curb, poured water on them and scuffed them through the grass. Some serious muck! Yes- some still ended up in the car and I am pretty sure it's still stuck on those shoes! I may add a bristle brush to my car inventory for future adventures! One of those places I had passed on the way to another park and had never stopped at! You even have a view of Fort Matanzas from the inter-coastal! Happy little pit stop. There is another parking lot on the ocean side of the road- I assume that has beach access. Happy parking!

Zero. To many rocks, unsafe to swim, and unusually high tide lucky when the power is outside.

If you go at low tide there are sand bars just on the other side of the inlet that are fun to explore and look for shells.

A little confusing that this is listed both on Yelp and on Apple Maps as "Saint Augustine Beach…read morePier" because the sign at the location says "The St. John's County Ocean & Fishing Pier." It's $2 to walk out on the pier ("Sightseeing", per the sign) but it's worth it. It's a beautiful view! Today was incredibly windy - so bad that I had trouble holding my binoculars in place while looking for birds. But I was able to log 9 bird species while there, just watching them fly by and/or on the beach. There are benches for sitting, but they did have the end of the pier blocked off. See other reviewers for speculation on why. There's also a pretty popular Farmer's Market that sets up every Wednesday in the parking lot in front of the pier. It's popular enough that we witnessed traffic bottleneck there, so be mindful of that.

If you love fishing, this is easily one of the best spots in St. Augustine! I visited this week…read morewhile on vacation, and since the weather was a bit cold the first few days, I decided to try fishing off the pier. I ended up loving it so much that I came back every single day. The staff in the shop are incredibly kind and welcoming--they really make the whole experience even more enjoyable and get you excited about fishing. One of the best parts is that you can rent fishing poles for the day, which is perfect if you're traveling and didn't bring your own gear. They also sell bait in the shop, so you don't have to worry if you run out.
