    Gavillacio sandwich
    Mike T.

Nice little store in the Quarter. Has a hot food/deli/pizza counter. Some basic groceries...all you need in a corner store! I ordered a Gavillacio sandwich on chiabatta bread. Never heard of it before, but it sounded good. Genoa salami, smoked bufala mozzarella, arugula, artichokes, sweet roasted peppers. I ended up riding my bike 9 miles home before eating it, so it was a little wet on the bottom from the arugula, artichoke, and peppers, but no big deal. I put it on a plate upside down in the fridge for 10 mins and all was good. It has an Interesting flavor, super tasty mozzerella and salami, the roasted peppers add a savory component, the artichoke made it a little salty/tart, a bit of crunch from the chiabatta and arugula. Totally satisfied. I'm gonna be back and try other food here! RECOMMENDED

Small grocery store located in the heart of the French Quarter. Super cute and quaint. Friendly staff. Tucked away in the back is a little kitchen making sandwiches, pizzas and the like. There's even a small amount of counter space with stools for you to enjoy your meal if you don't want to take away. Really loved this pizza. Came out quick. Was delicious and visually appeasing.

    Get one of these.

Oh, Matassa's... how I miss your pies. Pick one up; you'll thank me later. They're made by a local company called Anna's and can be found near the register. Sweet potato was my favorite, but peach was damn good, too. The crust is sweet and melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the filling is like candy. As for the rest of the market, I'd say they need to order more produce. The selection is skimpy and overpriced.

Matassas Market is back !! They have a great variety of products. It is shining in all its splendor

They're back on business , with a new member . With a new imagen, fresh . I'm going to come back again and again , I'm so happy

Well... This place went downhill fast. It's a shame, too, everyone that works here is so nice. Empty shelves, coolers and freezers not working, spoiled food, rotting fruits, everything on the shelf is on its last date of use or past it... the booze selection is ok but this should really be more than that.

She just threw those chicken legs for me - in that fryer behind her! #PersonalChefForTheDay

** This review is specifically about the Deli section ** Given the choices one has in the French Quarter for take out / delivery - this one, easily beats the rest. And from what it seems like - HIDDEN GEM alert!. The next few lines will be rather to the point without any uncalled-for reasons or need for exaggeration. Here we go... ##**##** F R I E D C H I C K E N **##**## (I wish I could highlight, and glorify the above line by another means. Fail!) Anyone who likes Fried Chicken (spelled exactly like the line highlighted above), should visit this place and get a - made to order fried chicken. Yes, you read me right. The Deli section at the very back of this store - they make fried chicken on demand. OMG - that sounds like the good old MTV days when music videos were on demand. I have to use another line for this again. FRIED CHICKEN ON DEMAND!! Yes. You don't get handed 3 juicy pieces of heavenly fried chicken legs as soon as you ask for it and then get directed to the checkout to pay $3.99 (again, Unbelievable!) You go to the deli at the very back of the store, tell whoever is on shift (in my lucky case - the cutest woman ever frying chicken on demand - pic attached!) - whatever you want - I wanted Chicken Legs only - no wings, no breasts, LEGS only. And she gave me the Brightest smile of the day, brighter than the NOLA sunshine, and spent 20 minutes - possibly one of happiest 20 minutes I spent in NOLA over the last 7 days (drunken bars aside - really doesn't count nor compare!) and made the most amazing fried chicken I have ever had in my lifetime - YET! And I had to get a fattening side to go along with it. What do I get? Mashed potatoes with gravy, Perfect with a capital P! The entire deal $6 and some change. Could I get any more lucky!? The next time I visit NOLA again, my brisk legs know where to get my not so southern behind to, to get the sexiest meal I have had, made to order - in a long, long, long time! Happy and Very Lucky me!! BAD NEWS: This isn't a hidden gem no more! Oh well, I am not selfish. I believe in sharing wealth (via Yelp!)

Cobb Salad.. Only $12 a lb. How do they do it so cheap? :-(
    Thomas S.

I heard they had remodeled and had a good lunch counter so I ordered a Cobb Salad.. I was told they were out of avocado, ok that happens, so offer to substitute something maybe? Black olives ? an extra egg ? didn't happen, whatever, no big deal. So I expected a good sized salad for $9 either way.. When I pick it up it's like a small side salad, 12oz to be exact.. So for $12 a pound this should be a GREAT salad right? Not so much, chicken was kind of dry and nothing special, hard boiled eggs were ok but they were over cooked too.. In New Orleans you need to do better than this. There are a lot of places with better food and way better value.. I could have gotten a cobb salad at Muriel's and it wouldn't have been $12 a pound and I would have gotten bread and avocado !! Very disappointed, I was looking forward to trying some of the other menu items but they lost me on the first try and the simplest thing on the menu..

My favorite Deli potato salad; Matassa's is creamy, eggy, well seasoned & mustard based: a staple at our Saints cookouts & BBQs!

DAILY LUNCH PLATES: e.g. MON: Red Beans & Rice $8; FRI: Fried Seafood $15; DELIVERY: it's a mitzvah that they haul up our steep Quarter stairwells! FQ OLD SCHOOL: this is the hub of the real, "wired-in" Vieux Carré experience. I think having lived in the Quarter since the mid-90s I tend to take Matassa's for granted because in reality there are some services that only they provide. First and foremost: Matassa's has SALES!!! and drop their old-school weekly circulars in our mailboxes weekly (this is in direct opposition to Rouses on Royal that doesn't participate in any of that chain's specials in order to maintain tourist prices). Secondly, Matassa's is a full grocery that delivers! You need 100lbs of ice for a party? Family unexpectedly dropped in and are demanding Mimosas? Just had minor surgery and can only eat jello or bananas AND you're out of toilet paper? Call Matassa's! And thirdly, they have a surprisingly good website with all the weekly specials posted.

Cool little market with a solid lunch counter. We stopped in for a *very* quick bite on the way to a ghost tour (this was after wayyy oversleeping a late afternoon nap). They were out of a few things (pizza, etc) so we ordered a couple cheeseburgers, which we could wolf down quickly before moving on. The actual burgers themselves were AWESOME but I've got some mixed feelings since I asked if they came with any sauce/condiments & the guy said no, but it arrived covered in mayo (my ONE hated 'food' item). I ate it without the bun, but it would've been nice to know ahead of time.

    Hot Sausage Po-Boy
    Spud Z.

Been going to this little family-owned grocery for years, and everyone I know goes here as well. When we have parties, they deliver bags of ice for us. Who else does that! (I bet no one). Today we had Matassa's lunch via delivery- I had a hot sausage PoBoy, which was one of their daily specials. It was a couple dollars more than my usual one at Johnny's, but quite comparable tasting with fresh, chewy Leidenheimer French bread and Patton's hot sausage. It wasn't anything spectacular or particularly memorable, but it was tasty and exactly what I wanted. It could've used more lettuce/dressing. I also had a small side salad. It was $2.95, so ranks as probably the cheapest house salad option in the quarter. Again, very basic And bare-bones, but for the price, absolutely worth it. My coworker had their lunch plate of stewed chicken over rice with peas and bread-- all very homey/comfort sounding. He said it tasted great, but nearly every other bite had a bone in it. That said, he LOVED their chicken tortilla soup. Definitely made in house, great price and portion size. Bottom line? I'd definitely order from them again. Quick, friendly service. Decent food, good pricing. Yep.

They don't currently have a cook. It's a great little market but if you're looking for some fresh cooked food you're out of luck.

You gotta come to fresh market on Thursdays for the $5 bistro meals!!! (Beware they do sell out of…read moresome items.) They also have a hot plate meal where you can get a rotisserie chicken, two sides, and 6 rolls - feed 4-6 people. (Perfect amount for 3 people sized family in my opinion.). Depends on the portion sizes your family eats. Either way, great last minute meal ideas after a long day of work. Or for your lunch break! The workers are all really polite here, but the checkout line is not fast so make sure to get a basket or cart to make waiting in line easier. It is always clean in here, and they always have lots of fresh produce. Plus a convenient parking lot.

The staff, especially at checkout, always seem to be friendly and upbeat, which is nice. The pre-prepared foods, snacks, drink choices, bakery and deli are typically better than most, sometimes better than the larger Whole Foods on Magazine St. here. And, they have an amazing floral section at the back entrance. There's a convenient parking lot that wraps around the back and downtown side of the building, but the spaces can be tight, especially with a SUV size vehicle. This time I grabbed some coffee, bread, brownies, and wine. Unfortunately, I found many of the aisles and sections not stocked very well. The bakery section had very little product as did several other places. Just empty bins and shelves. Hmmmm? It is the beginning of Mardi Gras season so plenty of King Cake and specialty vodka. Nonetheless, I do like this store. Fun fact- this used to be the Bultman Funeral Home, in a classic building on the corner of St. Charles and Louisiana Streets. Yes, indeed, a mortuary as well.

During the first week of January, my lifelong friend visited Plush Appeal to purchase Mardi Gras decor for her out of state home. We are natives of New Orleans and were raised with the proper etiquette and respect for ourselves, others and community. We are proud graduates of an affluent Catholic high school and our class of women has made quite a positive impact in this world collectively. With that said, as my friend was shopping she interacted with one of the sales associates and had a lovely conversation. This particular sales associate then left the area. Within minutes two other sales associates approached my friend, accused her of stealing, and when my friend attempted to clear her name and prove her innocence, these women refused. They stated she was on camera and despite my friend asking multiple times for proof and to view the cameras, she was again refused her request. Apparently, two large men were then instructed to escort her out to which she stated she felt extremely uncomfortable. Several of her friends have reached out to the store. Ms. Vee was so nice! CeeCee though ... the manager... when I called to ask for clarification she became nasty and hung up. Long story short, nothing was stolen. If that were the case why not call the police or show the video? Most importantly to note are the differences in skin tones. My friend is an upper class African American female who was seemingly targeted for the color of her skin. Take your business elsewhere!
