We travel to MN regularly and have wanted to try Matchstick's for a while so we were excited to finally dine while on vacation this year. We had a group of 6 adults and two children. My husband and I arrived early so we grabbed a quick drink at the bar. Our bartender was friendly and quick. I'm very picky about my martinis. I like them served super cold, almost icy and to the rim. She made it perfectly. We were seated near the front window in a perfect spot including a couch and 4 chairs for 8 people. Our server Molly was excellent. Super friendly and efficient. Molly explained most people order a protein and the sides are ordered separately to share. I ordered the Korean Short Ribs with Gochujang sauce and sesame lime sauce. The pork ribs were super tasty and tender. We ordered the following sides to share: Cauliflower fritters - Beer Battered, Garlic Aioli, Parmigiano. Delicious but needed more of the sauce on the plate as the fruits were large and there was not enough sauce for each of the fritters. Caramelized Brussels Sprouts- Smoked Berkshire Bacon, Thai Peanut Sauce. Tasty and cooked well. Wood fired carrots- Smoked Cumin, Honey, Whipped Ricotta. Nice rustic look and flavor. Not overcooked. Grilled Pave Potatoes- Cream, Thyme, Cheddar, Chive Creme Fraiche. Great flavor. Roasted corn dip and Guacamole - Roasted Poblano, Corn & Smoked Gouda Dip, Guacamole, Corn Chips. Delicious! Everyone else said they enjoyed their proteins. They had buttered noodles as an option for the kids meal. The adults each ordered 2 cocktails or beer. We made a trip to Matchstick to celebrate, and right away, we were warmly greeted. We were quickly seated at a table and waited for our server. While waiting you can look around and see hundreds of bottles of whiskey from all over the world. The seating is very comfortable and cozy. We patiently waited at our dimly lit table as one of my all-time favorite servers approached. Holden came to our table and greeted us and provided great recommendations for the evening. He clearly explained the new menu since it had been a while and then got to work. We started with a crab and shrimp cocktail that was absolutely delicious, then we moved on to the wagyu, my all-time favorite. It was soft and tender and cooked to perfection. The next item we tried was the cauliflower fritters. I'm not a fan of cauliflower, but the crispy outside laced with their cheese cream sauce was divine. The carrots are never a disappointment and give a sweet and smokey flavor. The crab cakes were excellent and rich in decadent lemony flavor that leaves you wanting more. To wash it all down, what better choice than a few bottles of bubbly. Holden was very prompt and checked on us, as well as other staff members, to make sure we had a positive experience. I spent my birthday eating dinner here the other day and it was great! The vibe of the restaurant in the hotel is fun, the pesto caprese was delicious, and I loved the Korean pork ribs. The wood fire carrots were great and the pork tenderloin was okay. I also tried the Faux 75 mocktail and we both really loved it. Our meal was so good that we can't wait to come back (we live in D.C.). We enjoyed every bite of the brisket pasta (shared among 5 people), the brisket tacos , the carrot parsnips side , crab cakes ,the cool cubed potatoes side with sour cream chives for topping. We also enjoyed the very tasteful and moist cinnamon bun with ice cream sandwich, the caramel apple walnut dessert and chocolate eclair. We had my Mother's Day lunch here today with my kids, husband, and I today. The waitress was super nice but that does not negate the fact that all of my kids food came out burnt (inedible), our appetizer was not given to us until after our main course came out and possibly the most disappointing of all was seeing the employees in the kitchen plating up food and eating fries off the plates while back there. We sat right by the glass to the kitchen and could see everything going on and It really creeped us out. It was more than one employee who was doing this. We spent almost $300 here today for food that did not taste good at all and just a weird environment. We will never come back here and I don't recommend anyone spend their money on a place like this especially in this economy. read more

We went there last Thursday for the first time ever and it was phenomenal our waitress was awesome too. It was my husband's birthday on Saturday and my sons is tomorrow so we wanted to do something quick for it on the 4th. We took our son... ordered the wedge salad like we had on Thursday and instead of it being fresh and crisp it was tiny and limp lettuce I then ordered the lobster bruschetta just like I had on Thursday- instead of it being full of lobster and flavor and one of the best things I have ever gotten at a restaurant like it was on Thursday it was mainly corn and had zero flavor. My boyfriend and I stopped here for drinks and dinner during our staycation in Stillwater on a Monday evening. We were able to walk in and get sat right away on the patio which is so charming and pretty. It felt like we weren't in Minnesota (us being locals) and truly on vacation. Our server was super friendly and was timely in service. The food is delicious! It's served tapas style so we could share and try different bites! We went with the Cauliflower Fritters and Crab Cakes. The fritters took me by surprise as they were huge but oh so yummy when you dip it in the sauce it sits on top of. Be sure to let the fritters cool down before you bite as they come out very hot! The chocolate ganache was very rich, layered, delectable and great for sharing. I usually eat from the bar menu here, so coming in with a review for dinner service. This place looks VERY cool inside but is not overall functional. Plan on waiting a bit because they do not currently take reservations, but you can get on a wait list. The mad men deep tufted chairs around the tables are cool, but also hilarious because anyone sitting in them gets swallowed up and look like children. As in, your shoulders are at the table height and look like wack a mole heads. Very comfortable and very amusing. Your orders come out in no particular order. If it is done in the kitchen, it comes to the table. This makes the table more of a game of Tetris and can be a little akward for anyone getting food that they are not planning on sharing if that dish arrives first. The room is VERY loud. Sound scatters everywhere. I was meeting people for the first time and had to pretend I could hear their stories not to be rude. The short rib was reported to be delicious and messy. But what Ribs are not messy. Tuna very good too. I think I will stick to popping in for just the bar menu next time. The restaurant is dimly lit, and the tables are very close to each other. Thankfully, my BF and I were nestled by one of the walls (filled with liquor bottles), which provided a bit of privacy. The bottles went as high as the ceiling, and we wondered what would happen if needed. Well, we found out. A server came with a ladder, moved our table to retrieve it, and return it. Being my BF and I were both seated on the booth side it wasn't a terrible disturbance. However, had I been seated on the opposite side where chairs were also moved, I would have been annoyed. Thar said, if you're seated, you may be interrupted at one or more points Moving along, our server was very attentive and helpful as we figured out what to get. We had the following dishes. -Smoked Wings: 4.5/5 smoky flavor was mild, which I liked. Wings were seasoned and tasted good. Dipping sauce was amazing! - Cheeseburger & fries: 4/5 delicious burger and fries which were lightly salted and crispy -Spicy Shrimp: 3/5 broth was good, but we could have used more bread to sop it up. Also, shrimps alone were flavorless. Perhaps seasoning and searing them or making broth thicker (a sauce) so it stuck onto shrimps would have helped. Visiting from Rhode Island and found Matchstick as we checked out Stillwater. Saw the liquor collection which is vast and would be hard to find something comparable. Decided that we should try it. The dining area is on the noisier side and the seats are a little too deep. Both of those issues are manageable for an occasional dinner out. A bigger complaint would be the unusual and clumsy silverware. Waiter indicated that he hears that frequently. The three items we ordered however were delicious and flawless. We had the salad, roasted carrots, and smoked salmon. Would order all three again. For dessert we had the peach puffs which were also outstanding. The drinks were fine including the single malt scotch I ordered. The beer selection is weak. The service was good. Would give a 4.5 if that was possible. We visited MatchStick restaurant in the Crosby hotel in Stillwater for a drink and some mid-afternoon apps. We were seated right away on the patio which was a really cute space. It had plenty of shade and lots of room between the tables to move around. After we were seated, we waited almost 20 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. We had a lot of servers pass by, but nobody stopped to take our order. We waited so long, we nearly walked out (we saw two other tables who also waited so long that they left). There were two other couples on the patio and the restaurant inside was nearly empty, so we couldn't blame the slowness on a crowd. We went inside and asked for service, and were told they were in the middle of a shift change so it would be a few minutes....but saw a lot of staff in a circle by the bar watching Instagram reels on their phones. It was frustrating. We ended up staying and when our server finally came, she was very friendly. We ordered some chicken wings, some Brussels sprouts, and a bottle of Chandon (a great deal at $60). Our food came out quickly and was really good - the Brussels sprouts had great flavor with a little heat and the chicken wings were juicy with a really nice dry rub. The bottle of Chandon was great for a summer day, and our server made sure it stayed ice cold. We had some mixed up prices on our checks - apparently the drink menus are different and our drink menu was incorrect, but the server rectified it for us (after we waited another 10-15 minutes). Overall, this patio was an ok place to grab a drink, but I wouldn't recommend stopping if you're in a hurry. read more

This place was really cute when you walked in. It felt like a speakeasy with all the bottles around the walls. Matchstick is inside a cute boutique hotel and across from the lobby. They had a good amount of patio seating. Unsure if you can make reservations, but it seemed like it fills fast. It was my first time here and I wanted to try a few items. They were a tad on the spendy side since it was a la carte. We were around during happy hour and decided to try some happy hour deals and drinks. Our server seemed really new and it felt like he was nervous and rushing us with the bill. It wasn't even busy at the time, but it was all good. Crab cakes: these were the best thing I had here! I would order these and a side salad for a lunch! The flavor of the crab cakes were perfectly seasoned and seared. The beurre blanc sauce was everything I wanted it to be. Sooo good! Possibly crave worthy! Brussel Sprouts: I am a big fan of brussel sprouts and also Thai peanut sauce. I don't eat pork so they put it on the side (thank you!). I dunno if it really needed the pork or what... they were good, but not great. The flavor of the peanut sauce was tasty and kinda firey! I liked that. They probably needed the smokey meat to break up some of the flavor. I liked the idea of them. Fish taco happy hour: They were Panko breaded fish tacos. They were pretty bland. I think they needed some Tajin or something to jazz up the breading on them. Also... the tortillas were super chewy. I had to grind my teeth on them to bite through them. I wasn't super impressed with these. We had a Bacardí Pride cocktail special that was super refreshing. It had Bacardí Coconut and a type of Truly with some juices. It was tasty and went down easy. A little expensive also at $11. I would come back for the crab cakes! Some of the desserts sounded amazing too. read more

Downtown Stillwater is really upping its game! The atmosphere here is really really good. It's menu makes you think white table cloth, but the feel inside is far from it. It's modern and fun. I was expecting it to be more expensive and it wasn't. Granted the serving sizes are rather small, but I actually appreciate the variety. And "small" is more like small-medium. Everything was delicious, but the dish that really surprised me (in a good way) was the cauliflower. It was batter'd and fried to perfection. The salt couldn't have been more perfect. Also, the garlic sauce that it was served on was the perfect compliment. Sure I love Wagyu steak and Short Rib, but this one was the true star IMO. read more

With that being said, the server informed us that the food comes out "fresh and hot as soon as it's ready" which is great in theory but we got carrots and potatoes right away (which we wanted to eat with our steak). And then the steak came out 15-20 minutes later. So your choice is to either eat your sides without your entree or wait til your entree comes and your sides are cold. Also a note to servers - if a couple say they are going to split a 10oz steak, please at least offer them an extra plate. One last thing (and this is silly) but the forks are shaped sort of wavy? I am obsessed with MatchStick at Hotel Crosby. We wondered in to MatchStick during the beginning of happy hour on a Wednesday afternoon during my birthday bar crawl. We were hungry, thirsty and ready for a comfortable moment. We saw the nice sidewalk patio and knew we had to give it a try. We ordered: Wings Ethel the Mule F150 #8 Rotating Whisky Everything was wonderful and the atmosphere outside was just what we were looking for mid-afternoon. The service was nice and I can't wait to come back and enjoy the indoor seating sometime. It is so dreamy in the bar. The only downfall was that they seemed to not be staffed to wait on outdoor customers. It was a little awkward that we had to go indoors to order our drinks, then they brought them out to us, then later they decided to start taking our order and serving us outdoors. Me and my girlfriend made a reservation for 10pm we live a lil far and got there at 10:05,before we could even go in the restaurant we were greeted by a drunk and very rude gentleman who told us that they closed the kitchen because we took so long? Before even leaving we look online and it literally says 10 min grace period? He told us that he waiting the full 10 min before shutting the kitchen down? How is that possible if we are there at 10:05? I'm just truly hurt because I love Match stick and have been her multiple times, but all good things come to and end I will not be going back. read more

We had never heard of this place before but were totally drawn in based on the cozy look as we were walking by. It was lovely and cozy, with nice lighting and comfortable seating. The drink menu is creative, and there is a huge book full of wine and spirits. Nice! The food was delicious- we had the wagyu steak and the scallops and each was very well prepared. Sides included the roasted beet salad and pumpkin risotto. The service was professional but still friendly and welcoming. Staff was very rude as soon as we arrived, seemed racially motivated. Showed up 3 minutes past our original reservation time and were denied entry to the restaurant due to the kitchen being closed. When making the reservation, the site says they have a 10 minute grace period, so we thought we would be fine making it 3 minutes past our original reservation, we thought wrong. Won't be going back due to the rude staff. Food is great though, so it's disappointing that the staff acted this way. read more

We were staying at the hotel for the night and thought we would give the restaurant a try. I was a bit skeptical based on some of the reviews but we loved it. There were 4 of us and we ordered 6 different things to try. The scallops, salmon, cauliflower, potatoes. mushrooms, and bucatini. The scallops and salmon were amazing along with the mushrooms and the bucatini. The potatoes and cauliflower were good but we all loved the rest more. There were about 5 other things we wanted to try but we were full. Our waitress (forget her name but she's a school counselor during the day), was awesome and very helpful!
