So my wife and I were driving down the interstate during holiday travels when it got to lunchtime. Honestly? We just saw the sign for Subway and Pizza Ranch and figured we'd get something quick and get right back on the road. We park in the lot, look up, and see the sign for a random Filipino restaurant - not something that I would expect to see in a little town in Iowa. Been a long time since I had that particular cuisine, so we figured why not? Interestingly, there was an "American Menu" and a "Filipino menu". Can't comment on the American menu, it was just some burgers and such - we came for the Filipino food. First thing that jumped out at me on the Filipino menu was their Lumpia - listed with the disclaimer "not an eggroll". We got it and I can say - while it isn't an eggroll, it is quite tasty. In addition, we each got an entree: I got Pancit Malebon, a rice noodle dish season with ground pork and shrimp. My wife got the Kare Kare, a peanut beef stew that came with garlic fried rice. Both had very generous portions, were exceptionally well seasoned, and left us quite satisfied. Turns out the place had just opened a few weeks prior and didn't even have a Yelp profile yet - we really just ate here completely randomly. Regardless though, it was a phenomenal experience - I only wish it was closer to our own home so that I could come back!

Ok first of all -- I did not know what to expect from the only Filipino restaurant in all of Sioux City. I like to think that I have high standards when it comes to Filipino food, so trust me when I say: do not sleep on Devina's homecooked dishes. I had her dinuguan and it is by far the best dinuguan I've ever had. Not only is she a phenomenal cook, she can bake too! She may just get tired of seeing me from now on :)

This was my third time here, and I can say I am sold. Tonight two of us ordered off the "specials" board, new offerings not yet on the printed menu. I had Tinola, a chicken and ginger soup. The broth was super flavorful, it came with a side of rice, and I was loving it, but then I was offered to spice it up with some Thai peppers - warning, quite hot - and that's what took this from a great meal to an incredible experience. I only added a tiny bit, but wow! I LOVED it. Cant wait to go back. My sweetheart ordered the pulled pork sisig tacos (and let me try them) and we both were thoroughly impressed. Super tasty! The youngest member if our group, a seventh grader, ordered adobo (sp?) chicken and liked it so much she got a box to take the remainder home. Clearly family run and authentic. Give this place a try, I recommend it!

When you walk through the door, there is a long, 1940's style soda fountain counter right in front of you. Wooden booths flank the two windows, and the remainder of the space is taken up by tables and chairs. A gift shop is off to the right. They go all out for holidays and a Halloween animatronic greeted us when we entered (this is written in October.) While deciding what to order, sodas were accompanied by ice cold frosted mugs. Menu is small and they were out of a couple of items. The food is ok, but there were two issues which resulted in the four stars, instead of five. 1.) The grilled cheese sandwich was grilled in grease that left an odd taste. Not enough to deter eating it, but definitely noticeable. 2.) The chicken salad tasted like it was made with a cheap sandwich dressing, not mayonnaise - a little bit disappointing. Service was quick and super friendly. Prices are very reasonable. Definitely worth a repeat visit if only to see the seasonal decorations. By the way, you can only pay by cash or check. No credit cards accepted.

Well there is no better place to go to for that hospitality and local business owned operation than Kate's! I am planning to go back for a second trip this week and I want to ask for Kate's signature food to be able to give a review on some of their favorites. But just on first approach, it is in the most wonderful corridor in Sioux City it has that 1950s hometown feel to it. Inside the restaurant it is a cozy environment that is so welcoming to its patrons. It is clean, well decorated and inviting. Please note this is a cash or check only operation so no credit cards!

March 2027 Sioux City, Iowa…read more Very nice interior. Large bar in the front center that seemed to be popular with guests. A few tables wrapped around the bar. We took a table in the back of the restaurant. Simple table with black cloth napkins. No candle , no flower, just a small salt and pepper set with a few menus. The menu offers a variety from expensive seafood and steaks to sandwiches. I chose the seafood Mac and cheese. My husband had the pork chop with sweet potatoes and a side of grilled cauliflower. The other couple ordered Mediterranean pasta with shrimp instead of chicken which came with a slice of focaccia bread. His wife had the chicken margherita sandwich which came with sweet potato waffle fries. My husband said the pork chop was dry and overcooked. My seafood pasta was served warm. It looked like it sat under the heat lamp while other food was prepared. Oddly enough, my meal did not come with any bread. But the other pasta dish had focaccia bread and even the kids meal that had mac & cheese had a big chunk of bread as well. Was it an oversight? Also missing from my dish was the Panko crumbs that were to top the dish. None to be found! My pasta had really great flavor. A complaint is that every third bite I was pulling a shell out of my mouth. It's good to know that the seafood is fresh, but I should not have to bite around the shell of the seafood. Also, because it was served warm, it made it less than enjoyable. The Mediterranean pasta I was told was delicious and it looked so. A lot of sauce as well. The chicken sandwich was quite large. Although it was tough and not tasty. It came with a side of sweet potato fries, which came out after we started our meal. It was forgotten the first time around. Overall, I would give the ambience an eight. Service was good and it deserves a seven. The food however, which I think is very important when you go to dinner, would get a solid five. I think the flavor was good, but again, because the food was served cold, and the pork chop was overcooked. I would most definitely take points off.

Like "5 Guys" (which is absolute garbage, and I have no idea how this place stays in business, because I've never seen a single one of these have any customers inside) But I'm digressing, and I'm glad I gave this place a shot! I walked over here, and I walked through the patio dining area, through the patio entrance/exit, not realizing that the main exit was just around the corner of the building but I made it in anyhow. The kid up front was super nice, and asked me where I wanted to sit and I chose the bar, naturally! This place is super clean, even the bathrooms, so that was really nice. A bunch of TVs, and I think I even saw signage for live music on Fridays? But it's a pretty big venue, and they even have their own private dining room for private parties, at least I'm guessing. My bartender, was a spitting image of a woman I know in the town where I live, in the Eastern Sierra mountains. I literally had to double take and triple take to make sure it wasn't her. But unlike the lady I know, this bartender was nothing short of excellent! One star goes for the knowledgeable bartender, and the successful owner knowing that 'extra lime' means WEDGES, not WHEELS. It wasn't too busy in there, but she was really attentive to the bar patrons, and was on top of her game. Everybody sitting at the bar area, were so nice to one another, we were all talking and I ended up meeting this really nice, older gentleman that I chit-chatted with up until he left. I love the fact that the people here are so open and comfortable with one another and can engage in friendly banter. So that being said, my bartender constantly kept an eye on me and never interrupted my conversations when she wanted to offer me another drink or to order supper. She always timed it perfectly right! I'm on a no carb kick, so I ordered the smothered pork chops, with steamed broccoli and asparagus. Man, was it good. Those asparagus were popped down over an open flame and roasted, and even though very simple and basic, some of the best asparagus I've had at a restaurant ever. My whole trip was very enjoyable, and it looks like I'll be here in Sioux City for a few more days at least, so I will probably poke my head in there, this weekend! I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YOU TRY THIS PLACE. I eat all over the country, from fine dining, to little holes in the wall in the deep south. This right here is a sure bet! ***DISCLAIMER*** This pure, uncut, honest review is federally protected under Federal Law by way of Bill #EO14149.
