It's amazing how many selections they have here and everything is delicious. Quick service and loaded with Italian delicacies and Imports. Stopping by for lunch on a Saturday and this place was surprisingly empty. Cute market in Rutherford on Main st that offers all sorts of Italian pantry goods and made to order sandwiches. We ordered chicken parm sub with vodka sauce and a couple fried zucchini blossoms. The food came out in about 10 min. We decided to sit inside by the window because it was way to hot outside. Our sandwich was super flavorful; the sauce was spot on and not too much and the the bread was toasted and crisp. The zucchini flower was fried to perfection and the cheese was nicely melted. Bought a bottle of olive oil for 28.99 and was charged 31.99 at the register. When asked what the three dollars extra was for I was told "because you paid with a debit card. Aside from the fact that debit card fees are illegal in nj, 3 dollars is a TEN percent fee, When I called and talked to the "manager" he told me first debit card fees were legal and it wasn't ten percent I was charged tax, which is also illegal in NJ on unprepared foods. When I told him my family owned delis for many years and only prepared food like sandwiches were taxable he said he would call me back with an explanation, which hasn't happened. I grew up in this small town and what this town is known for are restaurants on Park Avenue. Unfortunately the Mandees and the Hallmark where we all went shopping and got candy after school are gone, but this place is one of few businesses that stayed in tact. I recall walking by it many times, but never really went in. Now I live in the city and come to Jersey once a month to visit family. My brother picks me up at the Rutherford train station, but he is always running late. I was a bit hungry one day waiting for my awful uber driver so I decided to grab a something here. I got an antipasti salad and a bag of chips to go. They were really sweet letting me sit around and wait for my brother. When I got home, I had the salad and man, simple and what a gal needed to get some veggies in her tummy. Will be going back here next time my uber driver is late again! read more

Now this is a sandwich worth trying. I know you may have seen it on social media with people saying this and that but let me tell you: it's accurate. This is a very true to the culture store, and the food reflects that. Bread is fantastic which those of you who get it will know what I mean, it's that crispy fresh crust you could kill someone with. The little Italian products around the store make it feel fantastic and you can see exactly what you're getting. Forget about buying the sauce in the jars I could bath in some of it. My visit to Matera's deserves somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. I stopped in on a Monday afternoon and the place was packed with high schoolers eating. Any time a place is popping like that during the week, it's a good sign. I went in with a few recommendations for a first timer, but I ended up going with the H7 and I'm glad I did. It was one of the best vodka chicken Parms I've ever had. The woman asked what kind of bread I wanted and I let her choose. She recommended the ciabatta, and it was the single best ciabatta I've ever had. It perfectly soaked up the vodka sauce while maintaining perfect crispness on the outside. Great selection of prepared salads, peppers, olives etc. I haven't tried anything here that wasn't great. What got me was their Broccoli Rabe. Best I've had that I didn't cook myself! It's one of the easiest things in the world to cook but so many restaurants can't handle it. Matteras is cooked perfectly, still green and crisp, and not on the steam table turning grey. Sandwiches were huge, super fresh, and soooo good. They were busy and took a bit of time for a human inside to notice me and direct me to the cashier on the left to pick up our order. Well they just lost me as a customer forever. Their sandwiches used to be big on a big Italian roll with lots of meat. I just ordered an Italian sub and my jaw dropped when I saw how puny it was.
