The store is stocked full of so many different items. It really is a downtown gem both for the residents of downtown and those who work nearby and need to grab items before hitting the road. The store is usually pretty clean with registers at both entrances of the store. The liquor department is fantastic. they also have freshly prepared foods as well as lots of good produce and meats. There is a small private lot where you can park that is specifically for the sore. The staff is usually pretty friendly, but there have been some less than helpful employees on occasion. I think the later you go, the less attentive they are or the more they're looking at their phones. However, it is a good store. read more

Matherne's Supermarket is a lot of things: a mainstay of the Downtown community; a great deli; indoor and outdoor dining; locally owned an operated; convenient; clean and nice; historical; and has great customer service. It is accessible from both Third Street or Fourth Street, and its dedicated parking area is on Fourth. It is located in what was once the first floor of a bank building, and keeps some historical features of this space. The most striking of these is the giant vault door by the deli and salad bar area. The former vault space is now their wine cellar. Other retained features are the sculptural coins located high on the walls. It's kind of interesting to look for these details... The main attraction around lunch time is the amazing deli. They have a serving line that offers southern staples like fried and baked chicken and catfish, and a hearty casserole or special dish. These can be had with a rotation of two sides, and with bread and dessert, or in any other combination. There are also burgers, hot dogs, and other items available on request. It need not be lunch to enjoy the deli offerings, because many are packaged up into single serving containers for get-and-go enjoyment anytime. It is always worth cruising through the deli shelves to see what is available, there are often tantalizing desserts tucked into the refrigerated shelves, along with super special offerings like chicken salad, and pimento cheese. Did I mention they also bake in house? This is a great place to pick up cookies for the kids or a King Cake for the office. All their baked goods are top notch. While you can pick up these foods to take home or back to your office, you can also choose to eat in their indoor dining area on the Fourth Street side of the store, or on the outdoor tables on this side. The indoor dining area has large floor to ceiling windows on two sides making you feel as if you were outdoors (without the weather, of course). The outdoor area has a brick patio and is partially surrounded by shrubbery, very nice indeed. Matherne's is also a pretty well stocked grocery store, which is quite reasonably priced. I often stop there to pick up something to cook for dinner at home, or to pick up an item I need around the house. They have great meat selections and a extensive frozen food isle. Their weekly sales are competitive with the big box stores. One thing that is definitely different about Matherne's is the customer service. Thief staff are always very personable and helpful. They are an anchor of the Downtown community, and a great asset to all those who work, live, or visit there. read more

This is exactly what was needed in downtown Baton Rouge. I know plenty of people who live downtown, so to them, this grocery store opening up downtown is the answer to all their prayers. For those who just work downtown, like me, it's also a blessing. Matherne's is centrally located in downtown BR, has a tiny, private parking lot if needed, has excellent lunch options, has a full wine/beer/liquor selection, has great customer service, and anything else you could want in a grocery store. It makes me want to live downtown just to buy all my groceries from there because it is a beautifully designed store as well. The one downfall is I'm sure it's putting a dent in the local businesses, but who knows if that will only be short-lived when the craze dies down a bit. The food though (especially the fresh made sushi that I crave) is perfection. Even though they've been slammed with customers in line every time I've gone, they don't seem to hesitate to make something special right there on the spot. I haven't been able to pull myself away from getting sushi, but my co-workers have praised the salad bar, hot food plates, homemade soups, and one for sure has decided to buy some groceries from there since it is so convenient. I've browsed the aisles a lot and do find their prices to be quite competitive as well. I try to bring my lunch to be thrifty, but these fabulous options around the corner from my office make it tough to resist! read more

I love that this place is so close to campus (LSU). They had a ton of items here in the lunch/dinner/food to go area. I was able to get a full salad - with a great variety of vegetables and fruits. I like build your own but get a bit stymied by the pre-made salads at so many (potato, cole slaw, etc). This had plenty of pre-made options but also a plethora of options for a vegan - so a win all around. We came here twice when we were in the area for business meetings. The grocery store itself has a very good amount of options meaning you will find what you are looking for regardless of what you need. My "bent" is always more toward healthy and vegan options and that's not the easiest to find - here there are many ways you can meet your healthy food parameters. I even picked up some dairy free cookies which were excellent. So even though this is not the largest place I think it's perfect for just about anything other than real speciality items. It's quick in and out, convenient for walkers close to campus, and the people were super friendly. A win all around! read more

Only grocery store in downtown br until Rouse's open. GREAT! lunch counter! Fresh food, fresh fruit, suishi counter, big salad bar- with a big sneeze guard! Great wine selection! they have their own parking lot- which is wonderful when downtown is crowded. Ugh: for regular groceries- though they stock just about everything- it is a pit pricier. THAT CUSTOMER SEVICE THO! So yesterday I was two pennies short and my bottom lip quivered at breaking a whole dollar for 2 cents- and cashier pulled two cents from "give a penny jar" - really nice. Today- suishi bar did not have any avocado salad rolls- and very nice girl asked what I was looking for and made it while I waited. It kinda made my whole day. read more

I love shopping at Mathernes. It is so convenient to have a grocery store located downtown. They are a full size grocery store so they most likely have everything you need. They have an amazing beer and wine selection, as well as a wide selection of good quality cheese. They sell liquor and cigarettes as well. If you work downtown and want a quick lunch, they sell premade small lunches that they make in store that never disappoint. The produce is always fresh and the meat is very good quality! I love that I can come here after work without having to leave my side of town and hit crazy rush hour traffic or wait in a long line. The cashiers are always pleasant and remember regulars and make conversation. This store definitely makes my life more convenient read more

We waited so long to get a full service grocery store downtown, and Mathernes was certainly worth the wait! The store is always clean and the produce, dairy, and meat are all fresh. I never have to carefully read the expiration date before purchasing a product because the people who run this store just don't let expired products sit on their shelves. And they have a superb wine selection where you can find something delicious at any price point. Instead of self check out stands, the store is always staffed by smiling cashieres who are ready to ring up your order. But what I love about this small local chain most of all is how each store curates its offerings to its location. We have a lot of single people living downtown, and the store offers cuts of meat in small packages since most of us who shop there don't really need huge family packs of anything. And if you are hungry at lunchtime on a weekday, you can even get a good meal at their hot food bar. read more

When staying downtown for work for a number of days, having a grocery store downtown is more than convenient. Three times in the last 8 months, our team has traveled to BTR for several days for meetings. We ordered from the Matherne's catering menu to be delivered to our meeting site. The po'boys, the muffalettas, the gumbo were all delicious! A number of our group, not previously familiar with Louisiana cuisine, all now feel like aficionados. Bill is so easy and flexible to work with. They deliver on time and every part of the large order was accurate and the gumbo hot. Their lunch never disappoints! read more

This is a very nice upscale grocery store in the heart of Baton Rouge's developing downtown. They have a nice selection of beer, wine, and a diverse variety of higher end foods. It's a short walk from the Hampton Inn and was very handy to load up on snacks for the Hotel room and during the work day. There's also an ATM here just in case you need a little cash and a larger "back" entrance on the other side from the 3rd street doors. read more

The owner and employees of this establishment are impeccable. I lost my wallet in the area and they went out the way to contact me to get it back to me. I actually had never been inside the marker prior to this incident but I was surprised at how amazing the store is. I come from Texas where we have Kroger and H-E-B... I was very upset when I realized Baton Rouge didn't have one. However, as far as produce and food products this supermarket is the way to go. They have a large selection of cheese and meats as well as regular items you'd find at any supermarket. I will be returning back to this store, I love it! read more

Solid grocery store in the heart of Baton Rouge's downtown. Somewhat wizened cashier regarding the beer that they have. They have a decent selection of Louisiana and a few other craft beers. You can buy singles here. I looked quickly at the food. If you don't want to eat at a restaurant, this has some good looking food you could take back to your workplace or hotel. read more

So happy that downtown has a full size grocery store. I have had their breakfast, their lunch, and have gone there to pick up supplies for dinner. The cashiers are really friendly and the lines are never long. I have always found a parking spot if I needed one but it is walking distance of most places in the downtown area. It does cost a tad more than shopping at Wal-Mart but the convenience is worth it! read more

After walking round the area with my sister, we both decided to see what the store had to offer (yeah, its ironic to do exercise and then want to look at food afterwards). Its a nice cosey store and I saw some interesting items. I liked how their deli was affordable and that you can get a nice selection of items for under $8 (with this economy most of us like bargins). My sister and I were walking around saying, "I want this,'' and ''I want that.'' Some items are very affordable and some were kinda pricey, so watch your wallet!'' It is nice to know that some things are closer to where I live and I don't have to waste gas to go shopping for certain foods. On the other hand, it is crappy trying to find a place to park downtown so be aware. Since I am on a diet and need to walk, its ok, but it is a walk if you are going to walk there. Would I buy from the deli or buy a huge poultry item and walk home? Probably not, but I would carry something smaller home. The downtown experience.... read more

Great grocery store and more, smack dab in downtown Baton Rouge! Had their fried catfish and greens while waiting for the Spanish Town Parade to start. Seriously, some of the best catfish I have ever eaten...and those greens (turnip, collard, mustard?) were divine! The sushi rolls were fresh and tasty, as well. This store is a great part of the downtown scene, though it blends in with the office buildings and could go unnoticed. Will definitely return. read more
