Cool grocery store. Great king cakes and very helpful people in the bakery and the deli!

You really never can go wrong with Calandro's. A Baton Rouge staple for decades, this is a great place to find all sorts of unique beer and wine, and some amazing deserts. Known for their delicious and diverse king cakes, they have all sorts of treats and special items. If they don't have it, they can usually order it as well. I was searching for a unique beer to bring some friends, and they have one of the largest and most unique selections in the state. The list of beers is growing every week as well. It's almost overwhelming all the different types, but hey, just go back and get another kind later! Their chicken salad is probably the best in town. It has flavor and larger pieces of chicken, so it's not a spread like others in town. Their pimento spread is great for parties as well. They have tons of different cheeses and olives and different Calandros brand goodies. Their produce is always fresh and reliable. They don't tend to cater to special diets, so if you have special dietary needs or restrictions, you may have to go to another store for those. But by nature, you can find items that will work for you. Top all of that with friendly owners, friendly staff, and friendly people all around, and it always makes an enjoyable shopping experience! read more

I stopped in on my way home from work. I haven't been in Calandro's for easily 30 years! My grandmother used to bring us after church. I was looking for a homemade snack or a new addiction food. I defiantly enjoyed my trip. I got 3 king cakes in unique flavors for my employees. A delicious chicken salad i discovered. My only complaint, for lack of a better term, was no seafood dept. Unless I completely overlooked it, I needed some fresh shrimp or crawfish for dinner, and I just didn't see any. Still no true complaint read more

What a lovely find in Baton Rouge! I was looking for a place to pick up lunch, the muffuletta was delicious! Quaint little deli carved into this family style grocery store. Let me just say this!! I stopped in Calandro' s a week ago to get some lunch and saw Ooey Gooey Bars in the Bakery. They are made fresh in the Bakery!! O...M...G it was sooo good!! So of course I was craving some today so I stopped in and couldn't find them, because they were ALL GONE. BUT, as I turned around to walk away...THE BAKER WAS BRINGING A FRESH TRAY FULL OF THEM OUT (((insert happy dance here)))!!! Another man standing there also said "let me get 2 also" as we all (Bakers and customers) laughed because we know how Mmm Mmm good they are! I took a chance on ordering a birthday cake from here because I wanted a one-stop-shop for party trays and birthday cake. (I didn't know anything about their bakery, which is why I say I was taking a chance.) The party trays were good but I must tell you about the cake, which was absolutely delicious! I always turn down offers for cake at parties because I don't have a sweet tooth anymore, but I tasted this one just to see how it turned out since I had ordered it for all the guests and I ended up eating not only one but two pieces as did others!! Everyone was raving how delicious it was and someone asked where I got it. I had ordered the yellow cake with chocolate icing and just expected something mediocre but it was the best yellow cake/chocolate icing I've ever eaten in my life. I just wanna start by saying Calandro's has THE Best beer selection out of any grocery store in Baton Rouge. I'm a beer guy so I find that they have something new I wanna try all the time, literally the only place that might top their selection is their other location haha. Calandro's is a fantastic local grocery store that carries all the essentials such as frozen foods, produce, snacks, meats, booze, and even a billion flavors of King cake as well as much more! They even have hot lunches at lunch time throughout the week! They represent the definition of a local grocery store with local items being sold there as well as the purple and gold tortilla chips you see on clip strips as well for game day snacks. The staff is extremely nice and helpful which is hard to find at some grocery stores but friendliness is never not found at Calandro's. Overall most grocery stores are just stores to me but there are few that stand out that I always enjoy going to no matter what day it is and Calandro's is one of them ! read more

Rating is specifically for local beer selection- White lights night introduced us to this place and we pretty much only go to grab beer but they have the best selection of obscure breweries! This little local supermarket is great for running in and running out when I have a few items I need to pick up or when planning supper. I find the size is just the right size to find what you need. They are always staffed and the staffed and ready to assist. I also find the staff to be more courteous and polite than many mass consumer chain stores. Also, they have some neat items you just can't find at other large scale grocery stores. The prices are higher in comparison to your average chain grocery store, but the ease and convenience of not fighting for parking spaces (most days) or standing in long lines pretty much makes it worth it. read more

I'm consistently surprised by the wide a selection of groceries available right here in mid city. Not just the huge wine & beer selection, but a great deli line up, produce and everything else I can think of. I had initially expected to see just a small bit of this or that, but Calandro's really does have everything. read more

This family grocery store has all kinds of specialty items. The staff was super friendly and helped me select some great items. The cheese selection was nice. There are many items in the deli that are made onsite. The prices are a lil fancy but so are the selections. There's a large variety of libations. Stop in here for sure. read more

If you need provisions during your stay, to include beverages of all types and price range - this is the place to visit. This a related to bakery only. Earlier this week Needed to order a cake for co worker downtown. She wanted an Italian creme cake. We were not excited about the prices quoted by some of the singularly bakery places so we went online to see what else was available--calandros indicated it had a bakery and our calls to the bakery were received by a nice and helpful lady and an order was placed for the next day. We ended up order am Italian creme and a white sheet cake with butter creme icing and both were tasty and fresh---very satisfied! read more

Calandros is great local market. The name brand items cost a small amount more than the dreadful big box stores. The local products, fresh meat and breads are what sets it apart from those big box stores. The smell of the fresh baking bread alone is worth a trip to the store. The other reason I love Calandros is it is my go to spot for wine and liquors. They have a vast selection of wines from all over the world. The liquor selection is also impressive. I have regularly been able to purchase many high end hard to find bottles here. They always have something new I haven't had along with a regular supply of barrel selections. read more

For being a small, family owned grocery in Baton Rouge, you wouldn't expect there to be tons of specialty items. But foodies should definitely take a look around, because this place will surprise you! This is just a sampling of some of the specialty ingredients and items I have found here, in some cases lower pricing than the other stores!: - Squid ink pasta - Canned snails - Shells for the canned snails - Veal Demi glacé - Liver pate - Vinturi wine aerator for $25! - For those following Paleo or other sugar free/preservative free diets, there are numerous jarred pasta sauces offered containing no preservatives, additives, or sugar and are gluten-free. Yeah! Not to mention, their beer and wine selection is top notch. Sometimes it can be a bit pricey, but still competitive. I love that they have almost all of Vending Machine wiines stocked. The only issue I have had is with some of the produce not being as fresh, so a careful eye is sometimes needed. Other than that, it is a great local store with friendly clerks! read more

Looking for wines and spirits, then you have come to the right place. Some wines and liquors are quite inexpensive here, while Others are higher priced. If you know what you are searching for then you can shop well here... If you are looking for that special bottle of wine, then their reserve list at the counter is the way to go... The market is just right in size. Good variety of items. Fruit and veggies look good. Pastries are some what expensive. Not sure if I would go back because the cashier was very unfriendly, even though you are an older lady, no need to be unfriendly. I said hello how are you and she said Nada. No eye contact, did you find everything ok, thank you or good evening, etc . Wow!. You know customer service should be your number one priority. We are the words of mouth. I love this little supermarket for the fact that it's close to home and I can run in and run out quickly. It also has some specialty items I can't find in abnormal store there as well for baking and for French and Italian cooking. They get low stars for the service. The first time I went in I was just shouted at to tell me they were closing in 5 min. That's fine... but offer to help like " I'm sorry we are closing in 5 min but is there something I can help you find in particular?" I was looking for 1 Item and would not have spent as long in there If I had not had to walk all over looking to find it. And checking out they acted super pissed off with me. I have gone in a few times more and like I said, the store itself is nice but the staff has even since then always been slightly cold and act like they hate their jobs. Its an independent grocery with a great wine and beer selection, USDA prime meats, and an excellent deli with lunch specials. I go here with some regularity when I need a couple things because it is close by, and I rarely wait in line. If this sounds like what you need, then the shop is a home run. The reason I am only giving four stars is because the staff is a mixed bag. The wine lady, the meat and seafood guy, the supervisors, and that guy who stocks/bags/runs the place behind the scene are all awesome and make the shop worth while. It's been a few years since I had last been to this location. I went to the government location about 2 weeks ago to find a specific specialty beer and to pick up a few things. I was really disappointed. The beer section had 6 packs of beer on the ground down the aisles on both sides making it impossible to push my buggy through. I kept hitting them and knocking them over when I tried to bring my buggy. So I left it in the main aisle. The shelves were stocked I didn't understand why the extras were just sitting on the floor. They ended up not having the beer I wanted. Not a big deal. So I needed some produce as well and for as expensive as the produce is it was not good quality. I bought some strawberries. Most of them were already starting to go bad. All of their strawberries looked like that. I shouldn't have bought any, but I needed them for the next day. I ended up throwing them away before I could use them. The rest of the shopping trip was fine. Checking out was fast and everyone there was really nice. read more
