Beer, wine and hard liquor this place has it all. It's a one stop market stop for whiskey, wine, beer or whatever alcohol spirit is your choice and while your there pick up some steaks, seafood and a dozen eggs. It makes me sad that it is so expensive to shop here, but at the same time, I believe it's still family owned, and the employees have been there for a long time. The bakery and the women and men who work there absolutely know what they're doing. The freezer is stocked with local Louisiana frozen fare so you can have any of the local Cajun dishes, Drop them in the pot until your mother-in-law you made it from scratch. I, personally, intend to take it to my next family reunion in Alabama. No one will ever know. The produce section it's proportionate to what you would expect for a store of the size but they have the basics and a few exotics. There's seafood and meat selections is good. They have all the best local jellies and jams. The wine selection is intense and if you need a decent king cake during the season they come in reasonable sizes. I typically shop there when I'm in the area, or if I'm looking for something I can't find anywhere else, or I'm looking to fake cook some thing because truly who has the time these days? I was on the search for some Happy Raptor Rum and was lucky enough to find this place. We had just left our B&B and they used the bananas foster rum in our breakfast and we had to take some home. After a few stops around New Orleans with no luck, we called this place. They were nice enough to confirm they had some and held a bottle for us! These are all qualities I look for when trying to find a place to grab a few items needed for a weekend gathering or special event. Both locations of Calandro's are great. This family owned and operated store is certainly an experience. Their bakery is very well known, from their numerous (almost too many) favors of king cake, breads, sweets, cakes, and other tasteful delights. They have an interesting selection of cheese, perfect for throwing a cheese board together. Of special interest this trip was an elderberry infused cheddar, ending up as a bit hit at the party. Their deli and prepared foods are plenty and varietal. But let's be real... if you're going to Calandro's, you are almost always going to swing by the wine and beer selection, and wow, will you want to indulge. As a wine lover, you can find an array of affordable selections unlike anywhere in town. And as the craft beer craze shows no end in sight, Calandro's in on point with a huge selection of things you didn't realize could be found in Baton Rouge. My latest pick up included a golden ale from Mississippi, a white chocolate salted pretzel gose from North Carolina, as some more finds. They also support the local breweries and have an amazing relationship and drive to expose them to crowds who may not realize there are open taprooms across the city, or maybe who aren't "drinking in the public fans." And finally, friendly staff and management, as well as the Calandro family, make you never want to go anywhere else. "Local supermarkets rock this city"! Strangely enough, this was my first time ever to go to Calandro's. My initial mission was to look for king cakes and oh boy, did I find them! I discovered the treasure at the end of rainbow here! There were king cakes galore; shelves and tables filled the front of the store! Every flavor imaginable was available here: brownie king cakes, German chocolate king cakes and even liquor-infused king cakes (must be 21+ to purchase these). In addition to the different flavors there were different sizes of king cakes... if you wanted the large ones, they had them, if you wanted more individualized king cakes, they had them, too. Their bakery is filled with goodies, including Cupcake Bites from our very own local Cupcake Diva - "Cupcake Allie". As a king cake connoisseur, I ran across the Calandro's website and found a list of flavors. The Mississippi Mud flavor sounded great: the topping was Vanilla & Sugar Icing, Pecans, Oreos, Marshmallows; the Filling: Chocolate, Oreos, Cream Cheese, & Pecans. So, I made the trek to purchase one. The smallest size was $10.99 (they obviously make a HUGE profit on these things) but I felt that based on the description, it'd be worth it. Brought it home and cut a slice, and what a disappointment! There was no filling - NONE. The only Oreo was the ONE crumbled Oreo on top. There was no cream cheese. I feel like it was false advertising- I feel totally ripped off and definitely won't come here again. The descriptions are very deceiving and misleading. read more

This Calandro's location is so convenient to my office that I usually end up stopping in for a piece of fruit or lunch item once or twice a week. Over the past few months, I've gotten back to my office only to find that what I bought was expired or expiring in the next few days. Today I bought a tube of pesto to add to a pasta I brought from home and when I opened the box, the tube was damaged and it expires in 3 days. While I appreciate the section of dry/jarred goods that are hard to find at other local grocers, the prices are really marked up. Produce is also very pricey and the selection is slim. Overall, I'll keep coming here because it's a two minute drive, but I'll be checking the expiration dates carefully! I'll also add that the employees are really friendly, which is nice. read more

Local grocers are hard to find. And although the store is smaller than the big chain stores, somehow Calandro's offers an amazing selection. Let's talk produce. Not the cheapest, but fresh and well stocked. And that's important. My husband is English and was so excited to find a good number of his favorite snacks on the shelf - Bransons, cream crackers and even pickled onions! I'm a wino (admitting it is half the battle, right?!) and Calandro's wine Dept has so much to choose from! If you're not finding what you need - just ask! The workers know their stuff and will gladly help you find the right bottle at the right price and for the right occasion. They also have a good spirit selection, maybe not as huge as some places, but respectable. And the staff, did I mention the staff? They're all so kind and helpful. My wife went here last Friday to surprise me with a celebratory bourbon. She needed assistance having had neck surgery 6 months ago and being 5'2". She was unable to reach a bottle on the top shelf. There was a guy in the office who blew her off and refused to help. I called the store after she called me crying, angry and apologizing for not being able to get this surprise for me. I called the store, the shift manager on duty was all apologetic, said she would give my contact info to the manager above her. Saying I would receive a call the next day. That was the 19th of March today is the 28th. I have not heard back from them. They have become no better with customer service than Winn-Dixie. Apparently they have no problem with losing customers. This location is normally out of the way for me, but if I resided in the neighborhood I would definitely shop here more often. It is relatively clean, decent customer service and a variety of products at a fair price. Their King Cake is good, their sushi bar is okay and it is an adequate place for your grocery needs. They have an extensive selection of bitters and mixing agents, as well as any bar tools one might need. My first exposure to Calandros was almost 30 years ago when I was visiting an elderly relative and she insisted on sending me to grocery shop at Calandros. I loved the quaintness of the Government Street location and the fact that the family owned and operated it. Now, years later, a second location has opened up and is serving Baton Rouge very well. There is a sense of family in both locations and the knowledge of their inventory is incredible. There is a great wine selection with a very knowledgeable staff! Their wall of beer on Government is a go to place for beer connoisseurs! I like the fact that you can find many local products like Denicola's gourmet mixes, Fresina's Pasta, Ruth's Hummus and Mama Mia's Italian cookies in their stores. I keep wanting to like this store because of the selection of products they carry but they keep disappointing on multiple fronts. This last weekend's experience is what prompted me to finally write a review. The products they carry and the prices they charge should place this grocery in the tier of top-end grocers. However, they are missing the requisite level of customer service to maintain a top-tier level. One area of customer service that is lacking is at check-out. A practice that appears to be common in Baton Rouge but less so in other areas of the country is the expectation that customers will place their own bagged groceries in their shopping cart. I've had cashiers at Calandro's actually lean back and choose to do nothing rather than load bagged groceries into the cart. While common with Baton Rouge grocers it is not what one should expect at a top-tier grocer. More infuriating, though, is the lack of training for customers related to tare and the proper method of weighing product sold by weight. This past Saturday I purchased three items at the olive/antipasto bar and placed them in three different containers. The price of the items from the bar is $9.99/pound. The cashier placed all three containers on the scale at once to do the weighing and the price came out to $8.29. I asked if he had taken account of the tare for all three containers and he had no idea what I was talking about. I explained tare to him and he said that no one had told him about that, indicating that the cashiers were not properly trained in how to handle tare. I went to the office and had them refund the purchase price and ring up the purchases correctly (weighing each package separately with proper tare accommodation). The correct price for the three items was $6.55. The first cashier had overcharged me by $1.74 (27%). I choose to attribute the overcharge to poor training rather than dishonesty but the weighing process they used was incorrect and illegal. I grew up in the grocery business and have a very high expectation on how such a business should be run and a tare problem is a very significant problem. Here is an explanation of tare in case you're unfamiliar: Tare is the weight of the container or a deduction from the gross weight of a substance and its container made in allowance for the weight of the container. When purchasing a product sold by weight the vendor is required to deduct the weight of the container. For example, when purchasing steak at $5.50/pound you wouldn't expect to also pay $5.50/pound for the container in which it is packaged and in all the places I know of it would be illegal to charge for the container. Most point-of-sale (POS) systems have a method for the cashier to specify the tare for a product that is purchased. When I was a cashier and someone purchased produce I would have to press the tare button before pressing enter to indicate that the produce was in a plastic bag so the weight of the bag could be subtracted from the purchase. The POS system even had a way of specifying a tare multiple so that you could place multiple packages of the same product on the scale at the same time. If there were two bags of apples on the scale the cashier would press TARE x 2 to appropriately handle the weight of the 2 bags. Many POS systems do not have this ability so the cashier is required to weigh each package separately and adjust for tare for each package. Handling tare is a common practice and should be common knowledge for all cashiers who have to handle product sold by weight. The fact that the cashier at Calandro's had no idea what I was talking about is disconcerting. read more

Great selection overall and one the few places you can still find Boar's Head meats though the selection for Boar's Head is very limited. They have tons of obscure and craft sodas and most can be purchased in singles so you can try different varieties. The store is always clean the cashiers are always friendly but who is not ever friend and are usually out and out rude when not actively ignoring you are the ladies that work in the deli area. This is only reason I can't give more than 3 stars. I usually come here for the deli hence the Boar's Head reference earlier and each time with out fail I feel these ladies either hate their jobs or hate being bothered. read more

Calandro's is probably the best grocery store in Baton Rouge. They have hard to find gourmet foods and food products. If you ever want some rabbit, Calandro's is probably your best chance to get it because it seems like they have it every time I go. They have lots of hard to find products such as duck fat. They always have USDA Prime meats available, and the butcher is very helpful. The alcohol selection here is phenomenal. It's better than any liquor store in Baton Rouge. They have the largest beer selection, a huge wine selection, and well stocked spirits section. The staff is also very knowledgeable. It is a bit expensive, but they are worth it. read more

My mom and dad swear by the shrimp poboy on Fridays for lunch. She also swears by their hamburger on Wednesdays. When my mom orders the shrimp poboy she gets a huge-giant pile of shrimp. When I go in her place to pick it up, she says it's not as much BUT it's STILL a lotta shrimp! I'm a big fan of the Calandro's prepared chicken salad (in a fridge case next to the deli) with pecans and grapes--chunks of white meat, not heavy. Also, the Calandro's homemade potato salad is delish--I think it has a bit of mustard in it. Not so crazy about the other potato salads. The pimento cheese (Calandro's homemade) is outstanding. There's another pimento cheese that's a bit more smoky. I don't go here looking for a big bargain, but rather for quality and/or local foods. read more

Also, the lady that makes the Sushi is the Friendliest most helpful person! I went to this location of Calandro's (instead of Government street) because the other location didn't have the type of italian meat I was looking for. I was looking for Mortadella Sausage not pre-sliced. I found the Mortadella Sausage in their deli which I could get it sliced however thick I wanted. I was also looking for Gorgonzola Bleu Cheese, Fresh Basil leaves, Fresh Parsley, Fresh Mozzarella Cheese in a ball in brine water, Ziti pasta, and some Prosciutto. On my visit here to pick up my grocery list items, I had to scan through the entire store to see what all they have to see if I could use them as a specialty store resource. I started off in the fresh produce. The produce looked very neatly stacked, fully stocked, and fresh. However I was shocked they did not have any plantains or fresh baby spinach bunches. The Italian flat leaf parsley was excellent looking. Prices were a bit on the steep side but that's the nature of this store because they are known for selling specialty items. They had some different kinds of fresh mushrooms sold in bulk. The fresh basil was a tad bit disappointing. It came pre-packaged in a clear plastic box and the stem ends looked old. It tuned out alright during my cooking however, because I just cut the stem ends off anyway. I moved onto the bakery area. Here they have the specialty cheese refrigerated bin. Shockingly, the only mozzarella they had was in little balls smaller than golf ball size. They were in brine water which told me they were authentic but I was looking for the large ball for slicing, not small ones. I found the gorgonzola cheese. It was very expensive but it turned out well in my recipe too. Very pungent and fragrant. Also in the bakery area, they had an assortment of fresh baked pies and cakes. This was a full bakery. They had a french bread po-boy loaf that was about 4 to 4 1/2 feet long. They offer shoppers fresh brewed Community Coffee while you shop, you fix it yourself. They had a nice deli refrigerated bin with pre-made salads such as Crab Salad, Pimento Cheese spreads, Chicken salads, etc. Around the corner was the pre-sliced pre-packaged meats and cheeses bin. That was where I found the prosciutto. They might have had that in the deli cases but I didn't ask or look. I moved onto the meat bins. They had a nice selection of beef tenderloins in all grades. Most stores, if they even have beef tenderloin steaks, only offer one or two grades. This store had several grades and all were averaged priced. I moved onto the shopping isles at this point and found all the shelves stocked neatly and full. I found my ziti pasta which apparently is hard to find in Baton Rouge, LA. They also had other pastas I hadn't seen in other stores. They had canned pears that other stores didn't have. The dairy products were typical brands. Overall, this store was nice but a bit pricey. It was clean, buggies were in really good shape, and my shopping experience left me really hungry after seeing all the good food they had. I would return but because of their location to where I live, it won't be until I need another specialty item. By the way, the deli said they would order me the meat I needed if they didn't have it. Calandro's is the best place in town. They have the widest selection of products, from everyday items to things nobody else has. There are lots of items for cuisines from all over the world. They take pride in their store, and I've never seen expired yogurt or bought a piece of fruit that rots before it ripens. We have been Calandro's on Perkins customers since they opened in this location. They have a good selection of quality foods, liquors, wines, etc., and we will continue shopping there. I just wish we felt welcome and appreciated. The owners/managers/staff generally ignore customers. The checkers just go thru their routing of checking you out, telling you what you owe and giving you your receipt. If you chase someone down to ask a question, they are helpful. However, I do not remember ever being told "Thank You" or "We Appreciate Your Business" other than by the ladies that work in the bakery. We usually receive a smile and a "Thank You" from the staff at Hi-Nabor, Winn-Dixie, Mathernes, Albertston's, & Kenilworth. We shop in several other stores because they are friendlier but we would do most of our shopping at Calandro's if they made at least some effort to be friendly. read more

I want to like this store...I really do! I am new to Baton Rouge and after shopping at Publix for 20 years, I was told I would love Calandro's. While expressing to the cashier that I didn't find everything I was looking for but overall it was a pleasurable shopping experience. I went on to yammer about Publix and how their motto is "where shopping is a pleasure" and the cashier told me that Calandro's wants the same. I was just about to agree with her when she told me that Calandro's keeps their prices high to keep the right kind of clientele and that is why shopping is a pleasure there. I was rendered speechless! I was completely stunned! Did she think I shared her prejudices? I certainly do not want to shop anywhere that is not inclusive. At a time when Baton Rouge is mending and the recent floods damaged our entire city I can't condone this attitude. I will shop at Mathern's or Albertsons. read more

Calandro's is the best store in Baton Rouge. They have the best selection of specialty items, from international to gluten free or vegan, and the alcohol section is amazing. Not to mention that the people who work in the alcohol department will know the answer to any question that you have. The owners are there every time I walk in. They walk around and are easy to talk to. Many of the employees know me and my husband by name. They will order anything for you if it is out of stock or not in the store. Its pretty expensive but I would much rather spend a few extra dollars than have to deal with the rude employees at winn dixie or walmart. read more
