Oh the flavors. So much flavor. Really enjoyed this place. We wanted to try something new so we tried these recommended things (don't know what to call them). The food was deliciously flavorful, the service was attentive without being overbearing, and the decor is unmatched. It was my first time here and will definitely be back! My only criticism is that what I ordered (chicken & olive samosas) are no longer available but weren't crossed out on the menu or anything, so they just brought me the regular chicken samosas (that have green peas in them, which I despise). They are open late and good thing for use because we pulled into town late. My husband had the lamb curry and he said his meat was really tender and delicious. I had a lentil dish - Tadka Dal. It was very tasty and made mild per my request. We had cheese and garlic naan. I prefer the texture of the garlic. My one complaint - but I know this - It's why I avoid certain cuisines. Cilantro! Haters of cilantro beware ! You have been warned. The service was a little slow, but like I said we came in late. The atmosphere is interesting. I've been waiting for spicy, flavorful, Indian and this was it. This is hands down some of the best Indian I have had! We were given Matkabar as a referral and I'm so so glad we were told about it. The chicken 65 is amazing, the chicken tikka masala had some onion and peppers but it works. The rice, naan, all of it is perfect. I enjoyed the spicy-level, it still had flavor but got me slightly to have some eye sweat. My friends enjoyed their biryani and were glad to have leftovers. I've only been in Montgomery for a couple of weeks, so I haven't tried EVERYTHING there is to offer .. but out of all the food I have tried so far, this was hands down the best! The restaurant shares a quiet parking lot with an Indian Grocery, and the interior is beautifully decorated. I came for lunch with my husband and 12 month old on a Tuesday. There was only one other table and a couple of people grabbing to go orders the whole time we were there. We were greeted and seated right away and handed an iPad for the menu. While we looked over the options we were brought out something that I think is called poppadum, or Indian crackers, with a trio of condiments - Indian pickles, mint chutney, and tamarind. My 12 month old loved the crackers. We ordered the samosas to start. They were fresh, the pastry was perfectly flaky, and the potatoes and peas were fluffy with the right amount of spice. I ate mine with the tamarind and mint. We're vegetarians, so it was nice to see a full vegetarian section on the menu. I pretty much always order the same thing at an Indian restaurant (what can I say I know what I like), so it was paneer tikka masala (level 5 out of 10 spicy) and Kashmiri naan for me. My husband ordered the Kaju paneer (level 6 spicy). I'm glad I didn't go any higher than a 5, because it packed a nice lunch, but I think anymore would have had me sweating. My husband ate all of his rice and kaju paneer and shared my naan, but the portions are big enough that I had enough leftovers for another full meal. And the price is overall pretty reasonable for the quality and amount of food. I think we paid about $50 before tipping. read more

We have been wanting to try Matkabar for a few weeks now, and finally made the trip from Greenville. The restaurant is absolutely GORGEOUS! Gorgeous to the point, I want a photo shoot here! The most beautiful pillows and wall murals and lamp shades! Service was also amazing. Our waitress ( Pitha?) was really attentive and helped us make decisions on the menu. We ordered a few new things to us off of the street food menu, and some old favorites of veg pakoras and samosas. The sauces were yummy, and the apps were delectable. Our mains of Tikka Masala were good, but I should have gone higher in spice level, as it was slightly bland in spice for me. But overall a fantastic meal! Will definitely be back! read more

From the decor, to the people, the food, and the style of serving, and eating with your hands (they have plastic forks and spoons if you want), and everything to the smells inside to the sounds is very authentic. It felt like I was transported into a foreign country. I spent $66 bucks, but I was trying to try a lot. They had easy priced lunch/dinner specials on the menu. The utensils , although pleasing to the eye, does not work well .. the fork tongs are not wide enough to grab any food. We loved the naan, the chicken vandaloo, and the Hakka noodles with chicken was the favorite thing we shared. We also had curry chicken and it was amazing. We had no leftovers. Highly recommend ordering a few things and sharing it all, family style. Level 3-5 were pretty spicy, fyi. Not sure I'd ever venture above a 6.
