This coffee shop is so cute!! Attached to a remodeled hotel so parking is limited. The coffee shop it's self is cozy, a few small tables around and outdoor seating when it's not raining. When we entered the cafe there was plenty of seating and the open window lighting was very nice. The staff was very friendly and assisted us with suggestions since it was our first time. We were working at a fireworks booth just down the street from Matriarch and decided to pop in--and I am SO glad we did. I chose some sort of heavenly pastry creation with what seemed like a crème brûlée bottom, topped with lemon pastry, cream, and blueberries... and I am not exaggerating when I say it may have been one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten in my life. The combination of flavors and textures was absolutely unreal. Sweet, tart, creamy, caramelized perfection. However girl behind the counter didn't seem thrilled to be there. She had a bad attitude, we said hi and she didn't say hi or give us some sort of welcoming. We were driving through Modesto area and in need of some coffee and I am SO GLAD we decided to stop here. I ended up getting the strawberry masala chai... when I tell you, this was SO GOOD. It was different than a traditional chai, with more citrusy notes to it. I had been wanting to try this little cafe since it opened and I finally got the chance to try it yesterday. I ordered a cookie butter latte and a bagel with cream cheese, tomato, micro greens, and avocado. It was $18. Pretty pricey if you ask me, but it's OK if the food/ drink is good. I was disappointed in the food because my bagel was so hard- it tasted old. I ate most of it because I was so hungry but I had to saw through the bagel with a knife to cut it. The cookie butter latte unfortunately tasted nothing like cookie butter. It wasn't bad, but it just tasted like a plain latte with a cookie thrown on top. There was no cookie butter flavor to the actual coffee itself at all. On a more positive note, the cafe itself was really cute inside and very aesthetically pleasing. The bathroom inside the cafe was also very cute and clean. The outside area of the cafe was nice as well. They had some nice looking pastries in the display case, but I didn't order any so I can't comment on their taste. Overall, I don't think I would return- the coffee just didn't wow me like I hoped. It's perfectly balanced and easily one of the best specialty drinks I've had. Our family also tried the pesto turkey sandwich and it was a hit, fresh, flavorful, and made with quality ingredients. I didn't know this place existed and I am glad I found it! I loved their Dirt Chai;my friend had the Match Latte (it has no added sweet so if you like sweet drinks ask for the sweetener in it). It's a small cute place that has outdoor seating and sits on the premise of the hotel! Finally made it out to Matriarch Cafe a few weeks ago. It's attached to a motel that's been remodeled. When you first pull in to the parking lot you can tell they put a lot of work and care into transforming the property into something wonderful for their guests. The moment you walk in, you're hit with a heat wave. Since it's a small space the heat gets trapped inside even though they had a big sliding door open to the beautiful courtyard. They had a really nice espresso machine but since it was late in the day I chose not to have coffee. But they have a lot of other drinks available if you need something other than coffee. There's a good assortment of baked goods, and breakfast sandwiches. They even have a full pizza on the menu. Since it was late in the day and we hadn't eaten, my boyfriend ordered the pizza and it came out really quickly! However, it was cold in the middle. It's like it came from the freezer, they forgot to cook it all the way, and then put some arugula on it. So we were kind of disappointed. Since it's not safe to eat partially heated food, we didn't end up eating it. If I go again, I'll try one of their baked goods.
