My next appointment was with Jim who worked on me along with Jamaar who went through the exercises needed that day. Again fantastic. I can't recommend this place enough! I came in with plantar fasciitis and was honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed and frustrated. From the very first visit, John made me feel cared for and understood. He took the time to really explain what was going on with my foot, what was causing the pain, and most importantly--what I could do to improve it. The care I received felt incredibly personalized. I looked forward to going to PT! John and Ruben didn't just hand me a generic exercise sheet--he tailored everything to my needs and lifestyle. I begin this review the same way as my last review of a physical therapist. Physical Therapy has been part of my life for many years. Each person gives something through their work. Dr. Rebecca Pedras is worth 8 STARS! More than the intelligent thoughtful care she brings to her work, Rebecca uses her imagination and compassion to motivate clients. Early on Rebecca wanted me to do something that I had never done in my long life. Impossible, I told her. Eight months later that movement is part of my way of life. And, I am walking with barely a memory of the broken bone, surgery and trauma that followed. Fortunately the owners of Matrix realize the woman's talents. She brings a unique spirit to the floor; To the others working there. MATRIX is a great PT clinic. A big plus for everyone with medicare: They take that insurance. read more

I would like to start this review by first stating that I actually have a large amount of experience with Physical Therapy (PT) having had an athletic career and having suffered the injuries that athletics do that require rehab. I have been treated by many PT's over the years. My treatment at Matrix was the first time I was coming to PT for an accident injury. Of the 4 different PT organizations that I have been to in the LA area, I would only recommend 2 of them, one of them is Matrix. If you are someone that has not been to PT before--please allow me to just share some key things that you need to know so that you have the correct expectations coming in to PT at Matrix or any PT facility: -Every PT is going to treat the same injury slightly different, some very differently even amongst PT's in the same organization like Matrix. But the key thing is to have a PT that personally tailors a treatment plan for you. -Tailoring a personalized treatment plan requires a PT that not only has the education and degree--it takes someone who is willing to ask questions, analyze doctor/hospital reports and Most importantly be proactive and engaging with their patient. It is that last aspect that separates the best PT's from the average. -You as a patient must also arrive with the mindset that you are going to help educate the PT on your injury, give feedback during the session, and follow through on the exercises that you will be given to do at home. It's not helpful to come for PT and go home and do nothing. The healing could be short--hopefully it is for you but it could also take a year or two. For my past injuries, one took 2 years, another 1 year, and at Matrix, one took 1 month, and the other one is over 5 months, still not resolved. But no matter what, I follow through with my exercises religiously. -The greatest thing you are going to walk away from PT with are the exercises. I still do PT exercises/stretches given to me years ago for an injury long gone--but you know what-I feel so great after--I will not stop them--it enhances my performance and helps prevent more injuries. But there may be certain exercises that you could be given by a PT that may exacerbate your injury--you have to let the PT know if they do, and the PT will modify them--or maybe no PT on that area is the solution. -A few years ago, I was in month 7 of an athletic injury at another PT facility and still doing all the PT exercises, but no relief. Traveling for business, I was at a dinner table with a bunch of folks and the wife of one was a PT. I told her what was going on and she said for that...No PT! Do nothing...Let it rest for a couple of months she yells out--don't stretch it, or tense it, let it rest. So I did and 4 months later the pain was gone. Now maybe it would have went away anyway with the PT exercises--who knows? -And that leads me to my last point: No one knows when you will be pain free--but you have to be positive, optimistic, and follow-though in order to have a good result. And build the exercises into you daily routine. Because of my constantly changing last minute business schedule, I was unable to schedule with the same PT for all my sessions so I had the opportunity to experience treatment with a few Matrix PT's. It's better to stick with one because it takes a while for a PT to get familiar with you and your injury I found. They really need to get to know you. But I will tell you that of all the PT's that I have seen over the years at other facilities, Jess at Matrix was incredibly impressive. You will not be able to find someone with her skill level at another PT facility easily. I am glad that I got to meet her early on. She has a combination of skills that in the PT world are hard to find. (And you may have a hard time getting an appointment with her.) At PT, you spend approximately 30 to 40 minute with the PT Dr. and another 15-20 minutes with their exercise associate who will train you on the exercises you need to do at home. My recommendation is that if you are using certain bands or equipment that they sell at Matrix, just buy it before you leave so you can start to use it immediately the next day. Very important for a successful treatment is to arrive at least 5 minutes before your appointment in loose workout clothing--gym type clothes--shorts if possible if you have a leg or pelvic injury. Or bring them with you to change when you get there. You can't be treated successfully in street clothes like jeans or anything thick. Think light, thin, and loose--like at the gym. The most interesting thing about Matrix compared to every other PT that I have been to is that at the others, most of the PT's have been over 45 years old with a scattering of younger PT's. At Matrix it seemed like all of the PT's were under 35--I did not see one older one operating there--the patients were, but not the PT's. I found that interesting--It's really a young group of aggressive energetic PT's. read more

I've been rehabbing in Matrix for 3 months now. 1 year prior I was in an accident which broke every bone imaginable and the physical therapy treatment received as well the specialised hand therapy has been second to none. I used to be receiving treatment at another PT clinic but once Kate Silverman moved from her occupational therapy clini,c specializing in Hand therapy I needed to go with her, so now I receive world class treatment for my upper body with Kate as well my lower body with David. I came here for a rotator cuff injury. In my first session, the PT gave me 3 lb weights to do shoulder exercises with. When I complained the weight was hurting my shoulder more, the aide said "are you sure you can't do more?". Needless to say, this PT session further inflamed my shoulder injury and I did not return. In addition, the facility was packed like a zoo--the PTs do not spend the necessary time with each patient and instead delegate most of the work to aides (as I saw in my FIRST session, when the PT should be the most involved). read more

I just completed my third round of PT at Matrix and feel like a new man (I'm 69, so in fact not a new man). Thanks to Rebecca, who has a profound and instinctive understanding of how everything in the body connects as a single system, we were able to almost completely eliminate the almost crippling arthritic pain that has been coursing through me for many years. After four months today was "graduation day," and she sent me forth with a list of continuation exercises that target all my weak spots and a feeling of optimism and the ability to get on with the business of life. I still stand by my experience and what I witnessed and won't be bullied. ---------- Update: John from Matrix contacted me after seeing my earlier review and apologized and said he was not aware of my concerns previously. My review of my past experience still stands, but I'm glad management is taking this seriously and I hope this will effect more positive change going forward. ------------ I'm sorry to write this review as the therapy itself from one of my therapists was quite good. However, the culture and lack of health and safety precautions at this business made me feel unsafe. I began going to Matrix before the pandemic. I was alternating appointments with a male and female therapist. My female therapist was really good and her assistant was very kind and knowledgable. However, the male therapist (who is married) would always make overly-friendly comments that made me uncomfortable, and on my last visit with him, he injured me during therapy and left me with a bad bruise that lasted several days. After that I canceled my appts with the male and stuck with the female therapist who did a great job. But when the pandemic hit and most other businesses closed, I noticed that Matrix was sloppy with a lot of CDC recommendations. I often observed therapists and staff sitting and interacting very closely together throughout the day. There is a back room area where they use their computers and sometimes I'd see them without masks. Patients and others working in the facility were rarely 6 feet apart and nobody seemed to mind or said anything. Some therapists did not wash their hands thoroughly before touching patients (I observed many quick rinses, not full 20-second soapy washes). I was always uneasy as I never saw tables and equipment being wiped down prior to my use. I'd always ask and be told they were "cleaned before" but I never saw it actually happen. On my last visit, I was made to lie down on a therapy table without any towels or coverings. I asked why and was told "this is the new thing." Previously and at every other therapy office, they always had towels and/or disposable paper coverings for patients, even before there was deadly virus outbreak. After that, I canceled all of my appointments and emailed my therapist expressing my concerns and asking her to pass on my feedback to management. The reply was basically "I'm sorry you feel that way but you should have said something. " 1- I did say something and 2 - it is not the patient's job to monitor and enforce basic health standards! The icing on the cake was a few weeks later when I got a bill in the mail without any other messages or contact from management. No apologies, no explanations, nothing. The message was basically, pay up and get lost. Sadly, I still need PT and would have been willing to give this place another chance if they had made any effort to make me feel safe and valued. But alas they did not and I feel it is my duty to share my open and honest experience. read more

I saw Jennifer Carr twice a week -to rehab a medial and laterally torn meniscus. I had to wait months for an MRI during which time I went to another PT that said I was "fine" I ONLY HAD 3 WEEKS BEFORE A BIRTHDAY SKI TRIP SCHEDULED OVER A YEAR AGO and my knee was killing me! She said "let's do this!!!" She measured the strength of all the lower body muscles with an actual device (not just push against my hand), gave me exercises on uneven surfaces, adjusted my regimen (told me to stop the wall sits that killed) and continued to cheer me on non-stop and measured my progress. She also gave me a plan once there: warm up, take it easy, work up to high altitude, time change and skiing all day..... ibuprofen, hydrate, tape if necessary, etc. I was pain free and had one of the best trips of my life! Hugely dishonest billing department. They fraudulently billed my insurance for a visit I did not attend. I just happened to see it on my insurance statement by accident. I had to call in and call them out. I also overpaid, and had to spend even more time on the phone with them to get a refund of the difference. They hemmed and hawed about how they usually refund for overpayment at the end of a treatment series, which is garbage bc PT is so unpredictable! It is my pleasure to highly recommend Matrix. I have had a long-term issue with pain in my neck, shoulder generating down my arm. I've had multiple Cortisone shots, Neurontin medication , NSAIDS , Medrol Pac with no relief whatsoever. Working with Dr. Ethan Waldman has been a 10/10 experience. As a very active 32 year old and a competitive runner, I was extremely frustrated by a case of metatarsalgia (ball of foot injury) that just wouldn't go away. Ethan helped identify the underlying causes of the increased pressure on that area of my foot (flat feet, weak arches, weak posterior tibial, and very poor ankle dorsiflexion). Over the past few weeks, we've worked on strengthening these areas and increasing mobility and I'm happy to report that pain has lessened, ankle mobility has improved, and my stride mechanics are smoother. Some of these issues have been identified in the past but Ethan was able to tie it all together and provide a simple, easy to follow, and effective treatment plan and I am super thankful I saw him. One of the hardest things I've ever been through was a foot injury about a year and a half ago. At first, it was a typical diagnosis of a fracture and they put me in a boot. No big deal, or so I thought. But months and months later the injury had not healed and numerous doctors were tossing their hands up and saying they didn't know what was wrong. One doctor even recommended surgery. I had many cortisone injections, MRIs, and other exams that all led to no conclusions. Then a family friend recommend that I try John for some solid physical therapy. I was skeptical in the beginning. I had seen several physical therapists for this injury and none of them were able to help. But after just a few weeks with John, I started to heal. I feel like I was a bird with a broken wing and John enabled me to fly again. After more than 10 months of barely being able to walk, I was exercising, hiking and back in my rhythm. Without a doubt, I owe all this progress to John. John is at the very top of the PT game. He is incredibly kind, intelligent and dedicated to his work. He identified the issue with my foot on our very first session and confirmed after just a few sessions that he was sure he could help me, but he knew it would take time. Sometimes there is a little pain after a session, but I communicate exactly how I feel with John and he is happy to adjust for my comfort. I've never been more grateful for anyone in the medical field. I continue to be active, hiking, biking, classes etc. And in fact, I sprained my ankle just a few weeks ago in a potato sack race. Again I visited John and he's gotten me back quickly and comfortably. Matrix is a business by expert physical therapists who deeply care about their clients. The facility is lovely and new with everything you could dream of and more. They are offering pilates and different wellness and maintenance programs. Seeing Marc was the best experience I've had in physical therapy. I've been in PT off-and-on for over 10 years, for multiple injuries/ surgeries on my knee, low back, and shoulder. I'm writing this about one year after starting PT with Marc. I saw him in the clinic for 6 months, and I've been on my own doing a home exercise plan for another 6 months. Marc's given me the tools to continue working on my overall health and specific challenges...! Honestly, no one else has been able to do that including myself. There's a lot of misinformation that I've heard from other physical therapists that did not give me results, and I felt like I was suffering. I sought Marc in this frustration, and the process of gaining strength, knowledge, and accurate information, led me to a goal I always strived to get: self-efficacy and to finally become stronger. These are the general goals that were always stated to me in physical therapy, but I really never got there until now. For people similar to me with chronic/ persistent conditions, as well as those more new to PT, I think it's helpful to be more objective and list the main aspects I've appreciated: Patient Education: Marc helped me understand the cause of my pain/ limitation, whether it's the specific area of my body and/ or a contributing factor of my lifestyle- ie. work stress, sleep, diet Positivity: Marc was always encouraging and easy to talk to, and emphasized that I should have a similar mindset- that it promotes healing The "X" Factor: this was the most important thing for me* Marc was able to listen to me and address injuries to multiple parts of my body- this was too complex for other PTs to comprehend (too much for me too), and I was really impressed that he confidently understood and tackled my problems in a way that actually got me somewhere Knowledge: Marc was up-to-date on the latest research in his field, and I think this aided to my success- like I said, other PTs seemed to be stressing the wrong things, or focusing on problems that were actually irrelevant Strengthening: Marc didn't waste my time trying things that didn't work, so I was able to finally get stronger- gain muscle and lose fat The Future: I'm able to address and modify my home workout plan if I experience flare-ups or other challenges, and Marc was very informative in discussing the appropriate time for surgery versus non-invasive treatment *this was also a huge help that will inform me as I age Matrix PT: the office was well-run and Marc's assistant at the time, Cannon, was also the best, instrumental PT Aide I've had Thanks, guys! read more

I was prescribed physical therapy after an injury I sustained in my lower back, most likely related to my acute scoliosis. Doctors had told me it was muscle fatigue and that it would get better with time but I was most concerned by the fact that I had no idea what triggered the injury. I had been dancing the night before and hiking a lot the month prior. I was starting to equate physical activity with pain and getting afraid that I was moving incorrectly and causing irreparable damage to myself. I didn't know who to turn to -- but I called Matrix (surrounded by Erewhon and Milo and Olive for post-treatment treats!) and asked for a PT good with scoliosis. When I first met my PT, Marc Surdyka, I felt like I was talking to a friend. He's around my age (early 30s), and he's good at finding common ground instantly. Marc and I talked a lot. He really wanted to understand what I was experiencing and he never raised an eyebrow even when I had trouble explaining. He prescribed me a series of exercises I have come to love that can be done anywhere. Not only have these exercises helped me feel more stable when hiking, I'm seeing effects to my body that I was definitely not expecting but am very happy about! I loved that he filmed me doing exercises so I could refer back when I was at home (he also shoots a lot of great explanatory videos...ask him for his Instagram handle!) I probably would have kept going but he told me it was time to go. I've felt a lot less pain, but even when I do feel some irritation, I'm a lot less afraid of it. Thank you Marc! P.S. I broke my ankle a few months ago now, which was an absolute bummer because all I wanted to do this summer was surf, especially with COVID-19 going on. I'm all healed now, and Haley and Mike from Matrix truly helped me through every step of the way! I saw them within the first couple days after breaking my ankle, back in mid-July, and finished up maybe three weeks ago. Haley and Mike were really knowledgable, friendly, and fun to work with! I always looked forward to going to PT. The appointments I felt were helpful, and they give you exercise "homework to do on your own as well, which they update as you progress in your injury. I rarely write reviews on yelp, but I've gone to a few PT clinics before and since this one is by far the best I've ever been to, I just have to write this one. I had surgery to repair a SLAP tear in my right shoulder and started going to Matrix about 6 weeks after. I started seeing Jen for the first few appointments (she's amazing btw!!!) but my main therapist was Jess. She knew exactly what the best treatment plan was for me to get me back to 100% and helped me work towards my goal of throwing again. After about 5 months of working together, I can say with confidence that I feel better than I did before the surgery and I can never thank Jess enough for that. It also helps that Jess kept every single our sessions very entertaining with all of the laughs :) I've since "graduated" from PT about one month ago and I'm still feeling great! Went to Matrix after experiencing some difficult to diagnose pain in my hip while running. I got paired with Jen and it was amazing how she was able to help investigate and identify the root cause of the pain and even give me actionable work to address the issue. I can't say enough good things about David Ojeda and Sam. They are a great team! I love the continuity of care in that I always work with the two of them and not bunch of different assistants. My assessment with David was very thorough and I feel like he really listens. Although we are working on one area, I have many issues and David is able to adjust the exercises so that I do not irritate another area. Sam does all the follow through and makes sure I am in perfect form. He watches carefully and although the exercises are challenging for me, he makes it fun. Both David and Sam are extremely professional and sweet and I highly recommend them! Another big bonus for me, is that the facility is really large, so even when they are busy, you never feel too close to anyone and the place is extremely clean, so I feel very safe! Finding a good PT is hard, so I was happy to be referred to John Chao and Jen Carr years ago. They are both very knowledgeable and helpful; both have doctorates in PT. Any change in symptoms is immediately diagnosed and relieved as they adapt my therapy to optimize my recovery. There is no better place in Southern California for the best in physical therapy than Matrix. I'd like to specifically single out Dr. Jennifer Carr, who I had the good fortune to be a client patient of. I went to Matrix with a significant knee issue (torn meniscus) that had me limping and in some serious pain. Through a program that was tailored to my situation, Jennifer led me to rehabilitate my knee to the point where I am back on the tennis courts and not needing any type of surgery. I can't say enough about Dr. Carr and the whole staff at Matrix. I started out just prior to the pandemic going to the clinic, and have actually been doing PT online with them for awhile since the stay at home orders were put in place. I recently had a complete shoulder replacement surgery, on my left shoulder,this past January of 2021. During my recovery, I had to go through physical therapy and found matrix physical therapy at the suggestion of the physician assistant at the doctor's office that I went to. The physical therapist at the time that work with me was Jennifer Carr. As a massage therapist, I had to be in fairly good shape to get back to work. The care and assistance I received from Jennifer and her assistant Sarah we're amazing. I was given a set of exercises to do each day throughout my recovery and after 12 weeks of recovery I was able to get back to work with increased range of motion and no pain. Thank you again! Getting injured sucks. Not as much as Trump, having a parachute not open, or being marooned in Antarctica, but it definitely sucks. I went through a few PT places until I found Matrix, and the difference was astounding. Matrix is totally pro, modern, dialed in, and they genuinely care about your progress and are as personalized as it gets. I worked mostly with Jenny and also Jen when Jenny wasn't available, both of whom are masters at their craft and helped me work through a shoulder surgery/frozen shoulder. What's great about Matrix is that for every appointment you work with your main person and then do exercise training with an assistant. You never feel rushed and everyone is very accommodating. Jenny was my main trainer there, and she was always honest, massively knowledgable, flexible, funny as hell, and a blast to work with...a badass at what she does. I'm gonna miss both her and Jen, but having a shoulder that's now well on its way to complete recovery is a tradeoff I'll need to accept. I couldn't recommend Matrix more highly. They don't pull any fake alternative stuff that in my experience at other places didn't work at all, and instead are very scientific and centered around doing work there and on your own that actually makes a very tangible difference. read more
