Our waitstaff, Maria, was a joy. She took care of us and was conversational to just the right amount. We started with the Tuna Tataki which was superb. Fresh tuna and delicious sauce. We had 3 rolls - General's, Lexington and Blueridge roll. All were delicious and a great mix of fish and veggies. The rolls were rolled a little loosely and some fell apart when we picked them up - but didn't take away from the taste with those deconstructed versions. We had tobiko and scallop sashimi. Scallops accentuated with lemon was a great touch. Lexington is our usual stop on the TN to NJ drive and we will be back. read more

My husband thought his eel was the best he ever had. He tried the sushi supreme. I had the shrimp tempura which was lightly breaded and cooked tender. It had a few too many pieces of yam for my taste but otherwise great. I also had the spring rolls that were tasty. Watched Sumo wrestling from Japan while we ate and talked quietly. Clean bathrooms featured a fancy bidet toilet with heated seat which was fun. Staff worked very hard to deliver a continual supply of food and drinks without letting them grow cold. This is a cute little spot on the Lexington Main Street. We had takeout from here but I had a hankering for udon so we came for dine in. The tempura udon comes with about 5 pieces of tempura on a separate plate (including 1 shrimp) so it stays crispy until you put it on your udon. The noodles were wonderfully chewy. I also had the spicy tuna roll as an appetizer and it was the perfect size. My date had the tonkatsu which was very tasty and came with miso soup and this delicious, simple salad with a fresh, citrus-y dressing. Yum! This is a great place if you're not a sushi eater - lots of noodle and meat options! The service was very nice, and when we pointed out that we were initally missing the salad, our waitress could not have been quicker or more apologetic (it really wasn't a big deal at all, but I love that salad!). I would say there's less than a dozen tables, so you might want to call ahead for a table. COVID-19 update: Even though it's small, we did feel like we were a safe distance from the other tables. Meh. Found Matsumoto on Yelp, name seemed authentic and reviews were pretty good. We ordered 5 different types of sushi rolls, Miso soup, a salad and an order of edamame. First off, the edamame which is my current food obsession was smothered in sea salt. I love salt, but the amount was pretty overbearing. Miso was solid, hit the spot and the salad was a pretty standard side salad. The rolls were completely disappointing. There must have been a special on rice at the market because Matsumoto went hard! RICE OVERLOAD! We scraped off most of the rice leaving a pretty sad amount of fish and veggies. My spicy tuna roll was a regular tuna roll. When I mentioned it to the waitress she inquired with the chef who said the tuna was already spicy. It has zero flavor. My philly roll, although enjoyable had the smallest pieces of salmon ever. This cute town needs a better sushi joint! As for Rice, they have that on lock. Meh. read more

Went to this place again after a year since they do have great tempera udon and this time is a random lunch before students come back. I also tried the fresh sea urchin for the first time and it is a little wired taste but a good try~I waited only like 10 minutes and udon is still great! Will come back again~ read more

Sushi is decent and entrees are fine. Teriyaki chicken is pretty standard but tasteful. Service is slow during the day, but at night, they have more servers. But be aware that there is only one sushi chef, Mr. Matsumoto. (I think his son now helps out time to time) So if you are in a hurry, this place probably would not be ideal for you. Price is somewhat above average for Lex, but it is a family run. Kind and friendly environment. Considering the location and its local culture, I would recommend this restaurant to people whom are willing to explore ethnic food in Lexington. Nonetheless, this was one of my favorite places in Lex. read more

The food was, at best, only adequate. Far short of being authentic Japanese. Two of our items (the nuta and the three roll combo) were not served as listed in the menu (different fish was used) and no explanation was provided for the substitutions. The yakisoba noodles were overcooked to the point of being mushy. After reading other reviews, we were definitely disappointed especially given the price point. read more

Here Sam and Sandy run a pretty tight ship. The sushi is excellent and their other Japanese offerings like tempura are top notch as well. There is no other place to get these items in Lexington. It is slightly expensive and there is limited space inside. The only complaint is that it can be kind of slow. Relax- it is a family business and you're in Lexington. read more

Our friend who was born and raised in Lexington told us this place was pretty decent for being the only Japanese place in town. We went with our married couple friend for dinner and beat the giant rush of people who came in after us. We got the sparking Mio sake to share, and everyone loved it (Thuan and I drank LOTS of it when we were in Japan so we knew it was bomb). The men got the gyu-don bowl, I got the seafood udon stirfry, and she got the ramen, and we split the combination rolls (3 cali, salmon avocado, and spicy tuna rolls). It was a lot of food which we all finished, but my bf said the gyu-don meat was way too salty and for $14 he got far less of a portion size than what $5 could get you in japan, I think like half the size. Our friend didn't like her ramen so much, she said it didn't taste anything like ramen, but I very much enjoyed my seafood stirfry. Lots of seafood, not as much noodles, but no complaints about the sushi rolls. I think next time we'll try and stick more to the sushi rolls and appetizers! read more

Great local sushi place. I have never found the tab to be expensive when it is comparable to Metro! in Roanoke, Tokyo Rose in Charlottesville. Sam and Sandy are running a small restaurant, it is not supposed to be a huge restaurant. Yes, even fine sushi restaurants have faux crabmeat. I had a gorgeous Bento Box here in June and it was delicious.... 5 different dishes and fun diverse textures. Both raw and cooked items included. Two weeks ago my Mother and I had an excellent and creative platter and the tab was less than $75. Very economical for fresh seafood. Also note, if you have Foursquare and have a linked AmEx, you will get a $5 credit on your statement! Be sure to look at the specials on the window outside, the Rockbridge Roll was great! Well- the sushi here is good, but the prices are really, really high for what you get and the service is just so-so. This week we went with another couple- so 4 of us and it was $100- and I did not leave full. We had a few rolls and each one drink. Just to stop over for the night hoping for a decent sushi takeout this is not it. First the take out was in Styrofoam which I just can't stand, the sushi was twice rolled in rice some other reviewer complain about the same problem. The pieces of fish were teeny tiny I've really never had worse sushi. But it did seem to be fresh and I'm not sick. If you're in Lexington and craving sushi, I would definitely recommend Matsumoto. I've eaten here on several occasions, and the fare has been consistently delicious. The tempura dishes are excellent, as is the miso soup. The selection of rolls is impressive, including vegetarian options. All the varieties we tried were excellent. Compared to other locales, the prices might be slightly higher, but this seems to be a common theme in Lexington. The restaurant is on the small side and best suited for informal gatherings of friends or family. read more

Went on February 5th, 2016 which was a Friday night. The food was good but with our party of four it all came out at different times with one of us getting served their dinner item after everyone else had finished their dinners. The sushi and sashimi deluxe plate was good but a couple of the fish items were NOT fresh and had a slight odor to them. After biting into the yellow tail I decided not to eat it because it seemed to be borderline spoiled but the tuna and salmon, eel and other items were fresh and very good. The noodle dishes and miso soup were pretty good and the Philadelphia and California rolls were very good. The only thing that irked us was the horrible service but since we've been here before and the service was good, though very slow, we will chalk this time up to the Friday night crowd. But they should be able to give better service with a half full restaurant on a Friday night. Will go back on my next trip through Lexington and update Matsumoto soon. read more

The "sushi" here was awful, I ordered the Bento box and for the price I was expecting so much more. Instead I got a bed of rice with some fake crab and avocado piled on top. My husband ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll and it was horrible. The only thing decent on the menu was the miso soup. We were really surprised at how unauthentic the menu was, considering that the owner is from Japan. What we experienced was a watered down- cheap Americanized version of Japanese food. read more
