Osaka III in Waynesboro is a cozy place with filtered light and dark decor. The servers are quick to take your order and bring drinks. For lunch, I had the Broadway Roll. Inside the roll is delicate snow crab and fresh asparagus and on the outside of the roll is either fresh tuna, salmon, white tuna or avocado. I was filled with tasty food be the time I finished the roll. My dining partner had the Mountain Roll with white tuna, crab and avocado on the outside, wrapped with (not too spicy but tasty) spicy salmon. We went to Waynesboro for some Christmas decoration shopping and we're actually going to a different Asian cuisine restaurant that was closed! So, cruised over here on the recommendation of my brother and we were very happy!! We got Shrimp Tempura and Spicy Tuns sushi to start. Then, Hibachi for dinner. All was sooooooo good!! Nice surprise that Tuna was an option on their Hibachi menu. All was excellent!! Service was attentive and friendly. Quiet atmosphere with great Asian background music. It was our first time trying Osaka III after over a decade of dancing around it. We are always looking for good sushi in our area, and are generally disappointed. This was no exception. The atmosphere, I will say, was quite lovely. The interior decor is very nice and clean, and it lends itself to a quiet and lovely dinner experience. The service was attentive and good. The menu seemed extensive, with many dozens of sushi roll options. Many of them had very similar ingredients, and there was nothing really that was groundbreaking, so we ordered a specialty roll for each of us and one of the basic rolls to share . There was some sticker shock, as we have eaten at sushi places all over the country, so when we saw the high prices we raised our expectations. But when the rolls arrived, we were disappointed. While they looked quite nice, the size for the cost was way off. I ordered the Whitehouse roll, which claimed to have salmon, crab stick, yellowtail, avocado and cream cheese, fried. The rolls were wide, but very thinly cut--the thinnest I have ever seen--and there were only 6 pieces. At $17.95, that's $3 a piece. There were three sauces across the top, which cleverly hid the fact that there was no yellow tail in the roll at all, and that the largest of the fillings was the cream cheese (you could see this if you flipped the roll to see the side with no sauce). The rice was basic rice, not sticky sushi rice, and the roll was so thin it just wouldn't hold together. It had no real Flavor, mostly cream cheese. My partner got the dragon roll, which also seemed to look nice, and it was a full 8 pieces, but they were much smaller, and also just fell apart when he tried to pick them up. He said he couldn't taste the eel at all. The third roll was spicy salmon, but had spice. It also was a large diameter and skinny cut roll, also only 6 pieces. We had 2 iced teas, which brought the total for the meal with a 18% tip to $72. But cost aside, it was the most flavorless sushi I may have ever had. We had to try it so we would know, but I would not recommend. read more

Some things were great some were quite awful. The decor and service service were mostly calming. However, there are dying plants in the entry and constant glitching of a streaming TV service. Sushi was beautiful, but tasted 'fishy' making me think it wasn't fresh. Salad had wonderful ginger dressing - better than anywhere else I have tried. Hibachi meals came with a colorful variety of vegetables and a tasty glaze. And the ladies room toilet paper dispenser was mounted higher - so I didn't have to crawl on the floor to find paper. DO NOT go to this sushi place. Try Sakura which is like 1 mile more into town. I ordered 3 sushi rolls with only vegatables and they wanted to charge me close to $40. I think they use their location being close to the hotels and Walmart as a means of price gouging. When I inquired about the price the man there was so mean and spoke to me so condescendingly that I actually left my order there and found Sakura which ended up charging me $17 for the same order. I asked for a little more and was brought more than enough. When I received the check I was charged $1.00 for the wasabi. I asked for the wasabi that was left and they brought the bento box and tray with wasabi. I asked for a container to put it in. My husband and I LOVE sushi so we took a chance and ordered three rolls from this place along with miso soup. The miso was ok in flavor but for $5 a bowl it was missing all the usual add ins like seaweed and tofu. Each of our bowls has a few TINY pieces of tofu and one overcooked leaf of seaweed... We ordered the Super Crunch Roll, Waynesboro Roll, and Palm Tree Roll, each of which is about $20/roll so we expected they'd be great. Sad to say we didn't like a single one. The Super Crunch Roll was ironically not crunchy at all. It has smoked salmon on top which is oily, fishy tasting, and generally off putting. Why not use fresh?! And the interior was a mashed raw salmon with fake crab. The menu claims it comes with eel sauce but we didn't see any. The Waynesboro Roll was a sad fried little thing that was forgettable and fishy tasting. Definitely not as fresh as we'd like, nor as flavorsome as other rolls we've had. The Palm Tree Roll says it comes with Caviar, DON'T BE FOOLED! This is literally just different colors of tobiko, all of which taste the same! Like stinky fish! The interior was a mish mash of raw salmon(?) and more fake crab. Overall, everything wasn't fresh tasting and came across as a way to make a cheap buck. I'm still struck that a sushi restaurant charging this much uses smoked salmon (cheaper than fresh), mushed up raw salmon (can sneak in filler like fake crab), and didn't even bother to give us chopsticks, soy sauce, or napkins on a takeout order!! Late on Christmas Eve my husband I got out of church and we're super hungry. After calling a lot of different places in the little town of Waynesboro wee finally found one place open. We were sooo happy to find a Japanese restaurant open and so welcoming. For dinner we ordered chicken katsu, chicken teriyaki bento box, shrimp tempura and the happy new year roll. My husband and I loved how tasty and yummy the katsu was, it has a flavor punch and was well seasoned. The sushi roll was different from what we have had but all the flavors and ingredients made it top notch. The bento box was alright but I feel like the chicken teriyaki did need some help. But nonetheless it was still okay. Shrimp tempura was perfect, it was cooked fresh as we ordered. Complete fail. We are a Japanese family traveling into Virginia. My wife she ordered a sushi meal, and Virginia is next to the ocean, the fish was not fresh. I ordered soba. So a is not difficult but the staff could not understand that I did not want meat or vegetables. I wanted traditional soba. This restaurant does not make soba, they have oily soba soup stock and ramen noodles. Soba noodles are buckwheat and healthy, this was not. Small restaurant in a strip mall. We went for dinner on an early Wednesday evening and it was just us and one other table. Service was fine. My spouse ordered the Green Lady Roll with snow crab inside topped with shiso leaf, thinly sliced red snapper, lime and eel and spicy sauce. It was beautifully presented; except the wasabi had brown on the edges and the ginger was this weird dark red color. The slice of lime on top is a great idea but it needs to be thinner as it overpowered the roll. The fish tasted very fresh. I ordered the hibachi chicken with fried rice and veges. Pretty typical except it had a teriyaki-like seasoning so it was a bit sweet for my tastes. My spouse was dismayed by the appearance of the ginger and wasabi so, unfortunately, I doubt we would return. read more

Osaka has the fresh and delicious selections for their sushi. You can customize as you want, less rice on your roll or soybean sheet instead of seaweed wrap. I love the Super Crunchy Roll, the Diamond Roll, and the Spicy Girl Roll. The Seaweed salad is very good but most of their appetizers are! My favorite part of Osaka are the people. They're friendly, courteous, and accurate. Go there more than a 2 times and the owner remembers what you like and don't like! I prefer Osaka to all the Sushi places I've been in Augusta and Rockingham! PS: I lived in SoCal for 10 years and sushi was my fare 3x out of the week. read more

We went to Osaka III as it was rated #2 in the area. We ordered spicy rainbow roll, soft shell crab roll, unagi nigiri and tako nigiri. We got a spicy tuna roll instead of rainbow roll. Soft shell crab roll tasted like old oil and unagi had no taste. We also got 2 Sapporo beers. They weren't very cold and when we opened them, beer spewed everywhere. Was not worth the money. We probably went for about 7 different rolls (cheat day, special occasion) everything was cold and tasted good except the mackerel which was room temp so we didnt eat it. Sushi is clearly sparse on 81 once you get past Cville, but Osaka hit the spot for yelp-bae and me. Craving sushi on the way back from Charlottesville so we drove to the closest one to Lexington on 81. Came in here and were probably the only one of 3-4 other patrons (it was an early dinner). What's a little hard is the insane # of sushi rolls with all different combinations of seafood and topping, they've literally got a roll for almost any combo. Unfortunately it's been over a month since we went so I can't remember what rolls we ordered. We did get the shumai for appetizer, Thuan got the sashimi platter with tuna, and we ordered 2 very delicious rolls. The food came out fast and the server consistently kept our water cups full but left us to enjoy the sushi when it came time to eat. Given that there aren't too many places around the Lexington, Staunton Harrisonburg area that does Japanese food, I'd say this place is a thumbs up in my book. read more

Definitely a pleasant surprise. We were in the 'boro to catch a movie (Zeus is a fantastic theater) and were hankering for something new. I am 1/2 Japanese, grew up in Japan and am often disappointed by so-called Japanese restaurants. I mean, I get it - Americanized Ethnic food is often 'off' (for better or for worse) but real Japanese food sounded like a great idea last weekend...and seriously - almost consistent 5-star ratings on Yelp for this place?! We had to try it. I had the sashimi bento box (15.99) which was really a fantastic deal - sashimi (about 6 pieces) plus: rice, CA rolls, shrimp dumplings and a side salad. Hubs went with steak + shrimp meal (16.99). He liked his, but I LOVED mine. Fresh, tasty and pretty darn close to 'real' Japanese food. The only reason for star deduction was the lackluster service.
