It was definitely more on the side of actually Chinese than American Chinese, based on the menu and the people working there. They did have a reasonable vegetable and tofu selection. Among the dishes that you don't usually see at the more American restaurants was a dry cumin tofu preparation. It had abundant cilantro, and I'm in the category of people who gets a weird soapy aftertaste with cilantro but still likes to eat it from time to time; this dish gave me a ton of aftertaste but was otherwise good. A ma po tofu had proper fermented bean paste and leeks, albeit not a ton of numbing sensation that I could discern which is really the bar for the best rendition of the dish. Their cabbage dish was described as "hand torn" and it strikes me that this is the sort of place where that's probably true, and it was a tasty saute and a nice contrast to the rest. Their online ordering system wanted to offer me a free egg roll for my order but wouldn't let me get a vegetable one. I wish they'd label some of the dishes more clearly for dietary needs or just plain description. But overall, it was solid food for a town with a relative dearth of this cuisine.

Jade has COVID-19 precautions in place as far as a plastic wall that blocks customers from staff. The wall goes from the floor to the ceiling. There is a notched slot to pass cash and cards and a small hatch to retrieve your food. I did not notice any staff wearing masks so the wall might only be to protect the staff from the customer. The staff member forgot my drink but had already pulled it out to hand over to me. When I mentioned it she cracked a smile and we had a laugh. Other reviews speak on Jade's customer service lacking but overall I was fine with it. The humor about the drink made things better. I carried my order back to work but on the way I couldn't help but smell the egg roll. I was starving and snatched it up...fried to perfection and very tasty. So tasty that I didn't get a picture of the golden browniss, sorry fam. As for the main entree the chicken was fried well, having crispness and a sauce that wasn't too sweet. So for me, that's three strikes-I can give anybody a fair chance and everybody makes mistakes but I say just make the trip to Lynchburg get food that's worth paying for and service that is decent.
