Dr. McD is AWESOME! I just moved down to San Diego a few months ago and needed a new dentist, and I'm so happy I chose him. Not to mention all of his staff are extremely friendly. I felt so comfortable as I was given a tour of the entire office and introduced to Matt. I am 25 years old and still have a dentist phobia (me and everyone else I know). I hadn't been to the dentist in a few years (don't judge me) and I saw Dr. McDonald. He was so kind, talked me through how my teeth looked, why they needed work, which teeth to give extra care to, etc. This was just my cleaning. Then when I came back in to have my work done he assured me that we were going to get through it. He told me we could take it filling by filling. The numbing process was the easiest I've ever had (they apply numbing gel beforehand). Throughout the entire process he talked me through how long each one would take (he was very efficient). Basically what I'm trying to get at is even when I was having my teeth drilled, Dr. McDonald somehow was able to make time fly and ease my nerves. I would recommend him to anyone! When my regular dentist moved out of the country, my husband and I were referred to Dr. McDonald in west Vista. We were treated very professionally and warmly, and we have been TOTALLY impressed with our care, by both the doctor, the hygienists, and the staff. They don't seem to be just "out for the money", their prices are average, or a little better, and they have the latest equipment and technology on site, saving patients a lot of time, and money. My husband and I went to our previous dentist for the past 17 years. In the past, I really didn't need to do any work. I just went for cleanings and exams. I didn't realize my dentist was a "premier" dentist (which means insurance covers far less) until I finally needed to get some work done. I was very happy with the dentist and hygienist but it was difficult to pay so much more unnecessarily. I explained to his front office that I was concerned about the cost since I did not know the doctor was out of network. The front office lady was horrible and did not care at all. I checked the Anthem website for an in network dentist that is located close to me and has high reviews. That's how I find Dr. Matt McDonald. I went to his website and and inquired about the cost since I already knew what work would need to be done. Regina (in the front office) was very responsive. She e-mailed and called me and answered all of my questions. She figured out approximately how much it would cost (which was far less since Dr. McDonald is in-network) and she arranged an appointment in a timely manner. I wanted to have the exam and work done in the same day and she arranged that. Dr. McDonald did a fantastic job! His bedside manner is excellent. He took the time to listen to my concerns about why I left the previous dentist. He was very friendly and fun and explained thoroughly what work needed to be done. He answered all of my questions and checked in with me constantly. I could not have asked for better care. I felt very valued and in terrific hands. I cannot express how grateful I am for Dr Mcdonald! I recently had some dental work done at a different dentist here in Vista and was left with a terrible experience from the front office to the Dr himself. I had a temp crown installed and was sent home because the Dentist who does root canals is only there 2 days out of the month. Fast forward 2 weeks and I'm in complete pain and the temp had fallen off. I called Dr. Mcdonald and he had me come in right away. Keep in mind this was after hours on a weekday. Within a short while of getting there I was numbed up and in his chair having a root canal started. It was completely painless and it was obvious that Matt is a true professional. He's easy to talk to and extremely knowledgable, and it made my nightmare of a previous dentist experience seem a far distant memory. It's refreshing to know that I have found a dentist that I can trust and that has my best interest in mind. dr. matt mcdonald is the best dentist i have ever been to. he is beyond kind & he does truly care about the well being of the people he helps. my visit to the office was painless as it is a five minute walk from my house. at the appointment, we talked about surfing, skateboarding and other things. while my filling was done i watched arrested development on a television in the ceiling. the shots were literally painless as was his tx. the office is nice and the staff is awesome. i will not be going to anyone else as this spot & dr. mcdonald are as good as it gets; i have been to many dentists in sf/ east bay area, la & now in sd & this is the best for work done, office & staff. thanks to dr. m & crew. read more

In need of dental care, and after having met with Dr. Mcdonald, he was the obvious choice. He was very courteous, jovial, caring, and reassuring. He explained all the steps in great detail before and during, while stopping to make sure that you were comfortable and painless. Dr. Mcdonald and his great staff cater to everyone's needs by making sure that you fully understand at home care and recommending further treatment that best fits your needs. His calm demeanor helps keep you calm during any procedure which keeps the appointment efficient and seamless throughout. I can't say enough about not only Dr. McDonald but every other member of the staff . They are friendly , understanding , professional , and compassionate . I chose this dental office because it is close to my work (in Carmel Valley) and in my dental plan's EPO list. They checked me up and suggested three fillings and a deep cleaning, which I went through with. First the fillings: they billed me a $50 deductible when my plan clearly specifies there is no calendar year deductible at an EPO provider. I had to come back with copies of my insurance plan and they dropped the charge. Then, after the deep cleaning (for which I gladly paid a small charge), they said I should come back in a month to check that the result was ok; I asked how much I would have to pay for this second visit, they said it was like a normal cleaning and that, since I had not used up the 4 yearly cleanings my plan provides, it would be free. Lo and behold, after they finish that second visit they want to charge me; now it turns out it was not "like a cleaning", it was something else. I repeated what they had told me, and refused to pay in the office. Now, a month later, here I have their letter still claiming the money. To summarize: I have no particular complaint about the services (neither do I have any particularly good thing to say; they do normal dental work there, and I don't expect more or less of a dentist office), but for two times they have acted with what I suspect is malicious intent to get more than their fair payment. They've misrepresented a treatment as a mere cleaning, and they've overlooked a benefit in my insurance plan. read more

Just finished my treatment plan with Dr McDonald and I can't rate him and the team highly enough. From the first visit last year to every visit since then, I have always been made to feel completely welcome and at ease. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Debbie and the team on the front desk have always taken the time to discuss my insurance and costs in detail and to always return my calls when I have had questions. My hygienist has always offered sound advice and taken gentle care with my cleanings and I can't thank Matt and his assistant, Yulia, enough for the care they have taken during my extensive treatment plan. Matt is approachable, down to earth, gentle, kind and funny. Not only does he have expert knowledge in his field and using the latest technology and tools (including crowns made on site), he has always taken the time to get to know me as a person and to discuss common interests to make me feel at ease. He is an excellent dentist and does show great caring for his patients and performs dentil procedures gently with patient comfort and well-being in mind. I have spent many years (52) being a Dentist Phobic...... Consequently this has lead to very poor teeth and gums.... I just had my second visit with my new found hero ....Dr. Matt McDonald!!!! My first visit was filled with information, deep cleaning, and more information on what would be the best route for me to take .... I walked away from that visit without pain or regret..... Which lead me to this next visit.... I have to say the hardest part of the whole thing was the ride there...... Filled with anxiety I was once again put to ease, with gentle words and hands, lots of explanation, step by step reassurance, lots of kindness and care the whole way..... So you know this was a big visit, I think I was in the chair for a couple of hours......bone grafting with stiches and I think 5 extractions later..... I was on my way home.....yes there was some expected discomfort nothing ibuprofen didn't take care of, All in all I was feeling proud of myself and grateful that I have finally found a dentist that is willing to take the time in a caring way to help walk me through not only my fears but also getting me back to being in good oral health. Never in a million years did I think I would have the words dentist and blessed in the same sentence. But today, I am feeling pretty Blessed for the Dentist in my life! read more
