What a great find especially when you're in the middle of no where. The cute food stand caught our eye from the gas station across the street we were at. It looked busy, probably locals. Can't say I seen any other restaurants in area. Plenty of off Street parking. I love the service and polite respectful y'all and mam'. I wanted the brisket but one of patrons recommended, she always has the cheeseburgers, they are my favorite so I had a patty was thicker than most places, fresh toppings. Can't go wrong with Matta's. When you are in Balmorhea, you eat Balmorhea--and this place is a gem in the town. An unsuspecting burger place along the side of the road. This was one of the best burgers I've eaten anywhere. We were kind of in the middle of nowhere on our trip to Texas and we're getting hungry. We found this place on yelp and decided to give it a try. You order outside at the window and then wait for them to call your name when your order is up. There's several tables available outside. We both just got the regular burgers. Was hungry for lunch while driving through western Texas on the I-10. Saw this pop up on Google and gave it a try. It is just a mile or two off the freeway and it is literally a shack with a porch out front and to the side. Ordered a mushroom burger (Awesome), chicken sandwich (very good), fries (Solid), and chilli Cheese dog (Very good, like what you would get at a little league baseball game). Lady was friendly and since these are cooked to order, I can see how it might take a little while to get the food, but IMO worth the wait. if you are in a rush rush, maybe go to a fast food joint or something. read more

Really did not want to leave a bad review as I've worked in the food service insustry, however this place really left me and my family bummed out. They were a bit busy but even then, we waited a long time! Almost 45 minutes for 3 burgers. We realized we were missing a burger after all that waiting, and after going back they didnt even write it down. They were nice enough to offer to make us one again, but after waiting almost an hour for 3 burgers, the least we wanted to do was wait again for another one. Stopped here on the way home from the Balmorhea State Park. I new we were going to be hungry after swimming and since there aren't many options around town, this was on my go-to. My wife and I had jalapeño cheese burgers, my son had the mushroom burger, and my youngest had the chicken strip plate. With a side of onion rings, fries and a cloudless cokes, this place hit the spot. The burgers were good, big and way better than I was expecting. The I onion rings were a good pick as well. The curly fries were so-so as they were unseasoned. My some said his chicken strips were on the average side, although they looked better than most chicken strips you'd find at fast food restaurants. The only offer outdoor seating so you have to really contend with flies. I suggest you eat in your car, if space permits. read more

This is a really good burger place in a town with very limited options. It seems to be ran by just a single lady so if it gets busy it could take a while. I stopped by on a Monday evening and had my food within 10 mins. Good burger with fresh tomatoes and lettuce. Very good and would recommend. Driving East on I-10, we got the hungries and pulled off toward Balmorhea for lunch. Saying this crossroads is quiet is an understatement. Still, Matta's was open so we decided to give it a try. We're so glad we stopped. We ordered cautiously with a green chili burger, a chicken sandwich ( with jalapeños) and an order of thick fries. Yum!! He liked his burger a lot, comparing it favorably against an earlier burger at a stockyard restaurant. My chicken burger was moist and the jalapeños provided the right punch of heat. Small little mom and pop burger stand 2 miles of the 10, but worth the detour. We read reviews of food stops in Ft. Stockton and decided to look elsewhere and found a few positive review for Matta's and decided to give it a go. We ordered 1 cheese burger with tots, a chicken finger plate with curly fries, and 2 hot dogs. Hot dogs were grilled, nice surprise, were expecting boiled. The cheese burger was good, patty was not a store bought patty, it was fresh made. It looked like it was almost 1/3 pounder. You could get it with full garden, I ordered lettuce, tomato, and mayo only. Tots we're crispy and delicious. Chicken finger basket came with 3 large fingers, a piece of Texas toast, more curly fries than my wife could eat, and sawmill gravy. They did not have any dipping sauce but my wife quite liked the gravy. It also had some lettuce and tomato which I added to my burger. Only con it did take a while, but it was worth the wait and they were busy. A few customers came and picked up call in orders while we waited for our order. I've tried most everything there but my favorite is the Mushroom Swiss Cheese Burger or the grilled chicken sandwich with mozzarella cheese and green chili at it to eat yum! They get busy but if you call ahead it will be done in 15 maybe 20 minutes the most if not busy. The service is great. The prices well they gone up but it's still worth it. I almost never leave a bad review because I do research before going to restaurants, but this time, I guess I was wrong. I waited 15 minutes after the person who ordered 2 spots in line after me and almost 40 minutes in total. When I went up and asked about my order, they had forgotten it, and the cashier said I ordered a cheeseburger when I told her my order number. The amount that I paid was for a mushroom burger and lemonade. There was no way I ordered a cheeseburger that was a dollar less. Furthermore, once I got my food they had completely forgotten the ketchup... just mustard, and the mushrooms were undercooked. The most unpleasant experience I've had in a long time. read more
