This shop is amazing! They will literally spend hours with you to make sure you find what you need. And they will answer a million questions as well. They have been amazing whether we are just buying inner tubes and tires, a horn for a kid's bike, or a full bike. It doesn't matter, they are SO kind and courteous every time. And they are great with letting you test out the bikes as well! I had to try several before I finally settled on one. But it is perfect for me, so I'm happy they took the time to let me choose. They are also really fast when they are installing things like kickstands or water bottle holders. They did all of mine in about 20 minutes. They also were kind to my 7 year old when he asked incessant questions (as 7 year olds are wont to do). Overall, this is just a lovely place. I've been out to this store four times since May and never once have I encountered a shred of condescension or indifference. All staff members have been helpful to me, and patiently answered my questions (which are sometimes kinda "dumb") about road bikes. I rode commuters for years and am going to upgrade (on a budget) to a road bike so I can go farther faster and more comfortably. Listen up ladies (and cyclist guys with a lady you'd like to get started in the sport): This shop has the best selection of women's road bikes in the city, and they have all the brands and models in every size. I've had stores try to sell me a bike that was far too small for me or far too large just because that was what they had in stock at the time. This won't happen at Matthews. I went in and confessed, up front, "I am not going to buy a bike today, I'm just beginning my search," yet I was willingly put on multiple bikes in all price ranges so I could get a feel for different components, materials, shifter styles, etc. I was there for nearly 2 hours and left sweaty because most of that time was spent in the saddle. I keep going on about road bikes, but there are kids bikes, mountain bikes, comfort cruisers, and even touring bikes at this shop. They have 2 stories of BIKES!!! And they're put together and ready for you to try! I almost don't want to mention this next part...there's a 50% off rack. All the time. It's where I got my $70 padded Specialized bike shorts for $35. Yowza! Always good deals (like Amazon good) on accessories and apparel on that rack. A couple weeks ago, I did my first organized ride in Brown County-I went 30 miles. That may not sound like much, but 30 miles in Brown County feels like 60 on the Monon. I decided last-minute (the Wednesday before the Saturday ride) that I was going to change out the handlebars and stem on the men's road bike I've been riding. I called all over the city, and the shop that had the parts, was affordable, and could get the work done for me by Friday was Matthews. I dropped my bike off Wednesday around 6:30pm and got the call Thursday evening that it was ready for me to pick up. New handlebars, new stem, new bar tape, labor to put it all back together, and a front light came to right around $140. Very pleased with how much better the ride feels and also with the speed of service. I'll be going here from now on for all my tune-ups too. Update January 2014: I did buy my road bike here, because I was able to get the SAME bike for $300 less than the price at any other local shop. I also bought pedals and a seat (because most road bikes come with crappy pedals and seats) which they discounted because I was buying a bike that day. I went to every bike shop I could find in Indy, poked around when I visited Dayton, OH, Chicago, IL, and Louisville, KY, and I stand by my assertion that Matthews is the best shop in the city and definitely one of the better shops in the area in terms of staff, service, and selection. We continue to have most of our work done here because the turn around time is so fast. My boyfriend's road bike was making a terrible rattling sound, and since he bought it at Performance (their house brand), he brought it back there to be tuned up, cleaned, and "fixed" (adjusted). Certain services are free to customers who buy Performance bikes. After spending nearly 2 weeks in the shop, his bike still rattled and the mechanic told him "that's how carbon bikes sound." That's BS. We called around to various other shops and were told mechanics were on vacation or the soonest they could get to the bike would be 2-3 weeks. Until we called Matthews...we dropped the bike off at like 7pm and got it back by 5pm the next day...NOT rattling. We also witnessed them turning away a wrecked custom-built bike that they couldn't fix and recommending where the poor guy MIGHT be able to take it for repairs. read more

I wish I could give MORE than 5 stars to Matthews! I'm what I would consider a pretty serious cyclist. I realize that serious means different things to different folks. No, I don't wear spandex, and I don't race. But I ride 6-7 days a week, and tend to ride some pretty long rides. That makes me serious in my book. I was shopping for a 2nd bike, and had been to several local bike shops, and always walked away frustrated. At my wife's suggestion, I decided to give Matthews a try, on an evening when we had business on that side of town. Top to bottom, this was an extremely positive experience. Scott asked me what I was looking for, and, realizing that maybe I didn't KNOW exactly what I needed, he started me on test rides. I rode 7 or 8 different bikes. Each time, when I would tell him what I liked, and what I DIDN'T like about a specific bike, he'd take that into consideration, and say "Try this one". Not one time during this entire process did he become impatient or try to close a sale...he TRULY seemed interested that I be happy with the bike I walked out with. After riding on several bikes, I got on one more, and I just KNEW that it was "the one". He helped me with some minor adjustments, and it fits me like a glove. But the story doesn't end there. Holly, my wife, had been considering upgrading her commuting bike, Long story short....we were so impressed with the service (AND the prices!) that she started test riding, and SHE came home with a new bike also. The entire process was painless and comfortable. And, for comparable bikes, Matthews had much better prices than other stores we had visited, AND they offer a free tune up after 30-45 days. It's true, Matthews isn't the most convenient place for us...they're not very close to home. But the service they offer MORE than makes up for the drive. Rick and I had been to several bike shops recently. He was looking for a second bicycle and I was looking to get a more recent model. I was mostly looking at cold weather riding gear so I can extend my commute by bike season. Scott stayed with Rick the entire time and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that Rick found the right bike for him. I found a few cold weather accessories and the person who was helping me will be going through inventory to get ready for a mobile sale in a couple of weeks...and agreed to save some items back in my size so I can come in later and try them on and decide what I want to buy! WOW! Amazingly helpful and courteous...no pressure to buy - they want you to be happy. I love that! When all was said and done, we both had bikes. Not because of high pressure sales, but because they took the time to talk WITH us...find out how we felt on the bikes we tried, asked lots of questions and let us do most of the talking, instead of talking down to us or trying to upsell us to more of a bike than we would ever need. These guys are top notch. Walked in at 3pm to look for a bike...the staff asked me a lot of questions about how I ride, where, how often, how far, etc. Placed me in an extremely affordable bike. I would have been very happy if that were all. They told me due to the volume of customers they would have it ready for me to ride early part of next week. They called me back with 90 minutes to tell me my bike was ready to go. I arrived when the shop was ready to close up within 15 minutes. When I took the bike for a test, we both decided the next size up was going to fit my needs better. I left 20 minutes after closing with the right-sized bike and just came back from my first ride. An excellent place to buy a bike. They have a large selection and knowledgeable staff. I went in there only knowing what size bike I needed and that was it. I had tried several bikes at several shops around the northern Indianapolis area, and downtown. The biggest problem I faced with many other stores was limited selection for my price range, and availability of size (54cm road bike frame). At Matthew's Bicycle there was no real pressure tactics, nor did I feel like I was repeatedly being steered to only the high priced bikes (this happened to me at a big box store that shall remain unnamed). After I bought a bike there I purposefully waited to write this review until after my free tuneup service (one free included). Many times after you buy a large purchase at any establishment they don't really care what happens afterwards. This was not the case with Matthew's Bicycles. The free service worked out well. I actually needed a stem riser to be installed and it seemed like it might cost a lot due to the fact that they thought that they had to remove the tape on the bars. It turned out not to be the case and the stem riser went in pretty cheaply, compared to the quoted price. Also, they got the job done very fast. I was very satisfied. My only complaint was during a phone call about questions in regards to bike repairs, the person on the phone was rather short at times and gave me recommendations that I felt were not very good. Aside from that, all other service interactions were excellent. This is a solid establishment, and they do good work. read more

This is an excellent bike shop! After shopping around at some of the big box stores and looking for a cheaper bike, I decided to take some advice and go check out a bike shop. Better to have something for $300 that is going to last, then something for $150 that will be broken in a year or less. I am so happy that I visited Matthews! I took my bike in to be adjusted and was told by the mechanic that I needed a complete overhaul as well as a new chain, cables, and brakes on my road bike. He suggested that I should consider looking at some of their sales because my bike was older, with entry level components and may not be worth overhauling. I was saddened by the news because although my bike is 6 or 7 years old, I love the way it rides and the way it fits me. Winter was approaching and the end of my riding season so I decided to think it over before making a decision. A few weeks ago I took my bike to Bicycle Garage Indy (BGI) because they were having a winter special. I figured if I needed a complete overhaul I better get a discount. I dropped it off cringing at the idea that I was still going to drop $250 + new parts & labor. I was pleasantly surprised when I picked her up and was told I only owed $80. She just needed their deluxe tune up, but not an overhaul by any stretch of the imagination. She also didn't need a new chain, cables, or brakes. They were all fine. The mechanic even commented that my bike was in "great shape". I'm now a loyal BGI customer and I would not recommend Matthews Bicycles to anyone. read more

On a slammed Saturday, they took it right into their shop and made some suggestions, with a range of prices. Matthews Bicycles far exceeded my expectations with the repairs they made on my bike and their customer service. My bike was in shambles after I wrecked as my bike frame was bent and right derailleur damaged. I really didn't think my bike was going to be salvageable, specifically because of the bent frame. Steve Southwood took a look at my bike and put his extensive knowledge and expertise of bikes to use. He didn't make any promises on what he could fix but said he would definitely take a look and see what he could make happen. 1.5 hours later, he called me back and told me he was able to fix it! This was the nearest bike shop I could find that was open on Sunday. Stopped in for some lights and a bell. The guy who helped me was suuuuper nice. I couldn't figure out how to ring one of the bells so he explained it to me. Because bicycle bells are sometimes hard to operate ... yeah. I was in Indianapolis on vacation and had an unexpected break on my bike. Needed a very quick fix since i was leaving for St Louis the next day. The staff at Matthews was very accommodating and said they could fix my bent piece on my frame by the end of the day. I was impressed with their customer service and they didn't charge me an arm and a leg to fix it either. Next time I am in town, I will be paying them a visit. This is a wonderful bike shop. Pricing is fair and comparable to the other bike shops I have been to in the city. I would say that I wish they carry larger sizes for women, but this is an issue I run into at most of the shops around town. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful.
