I lived in Baltimore many years ago and had heard of Matthew's Pizza a handful of times - yet never made it the three blocks there. Boy was I sorry! The restaurant has a very old timey feel. There are plenty of self loving articles decorating the walls that paint the history and story of the restaurant. Wicker and wood tables line both sides of the very narrow restaurant located in canton. The whole places seats about 30-35 people. We were seated and immediately welcomed by a waitress who couldn't have been kinder. We asked a few questions and she took her time to explain the menu. We order 3 pizzas for 6 people. 1 stuffed pizza (we had it stuffed with local sausage), 1 cheese pizza and 1 everything pizza with no anchovies. Price was very reasonable at about $13-$16 a pizza All three were great!!! So impressed :) can't wait to get back there when I'm in town again. read more

Crispy crust with cheese that goes out to the edges, yum! The pizzas here are smaller and thicker than pizzas you'd get somewhere else. The large can feed 2 people, but not if one of you is really hungry. My husband & I tried the plain pie and were not disappointed. The sauce was tangy and flavorful, there was plenty of cheese, and the crust was extremely crispy. We took our pizza to go since seating is pretty tight here and it was busy on a Tuesday night. We had not been back to Matthew's for quite some time after eating there quite often when we first moved to Baltimore. We were pleasantly surprised to find the pizza as good as we remembered when we went back the other night. I enjoyed the white cheese pizza with onions. My husband had the meat special with an abundance of pork in all forms. The antipasto salad to start was good but a little soggy from the dressing. Service was attentive and friendly and we were lucky to grab a parking spot right out front. We enjoyed. We'll be back. read more

I'm a fan of this place, definitely great for late night pizza cravings or extreme hunger. I thought it was maybe a little overhyped but I think I'm more of a thin, NY-style pizza person than a deeper, uber cheesy pizza person. The pizza is FILLED with cheese, like it's not a topping, it IS the pizza. I love cheese, don't get me wrong, but for me the quality of the pizza is all about the sauce. I barely tasted the sauce on my everything pizza. The crust was nice and crispy, which I liked, but to me the pizza was just a more cheezy version of good pizza you could get elsewhere. Omg I'm disgusted I ate a couple pieces but I was famished. I regret it so much. This is the worst pizza in life! Worse than 7/11 pizza sitting around all day. It was greasy and stinky. We got the shredded pizza with pepperoni on one and jalapeño/pineapple on the other. I love burnt bubbles and burnt crust but this was just burnt extremely bad quality cheese. Like burnt plastic. It dosent even come in a box, it comes in two plates so it was cold. Worst $50 I've ever spent in my whole life. As I write this my stomach hurts. I know I'm going to have a stomach ache soon. Plus I'm bummed because I've never disliked a pizza so much. I wanted to love it and I was excited based on the reviews but I feel like I got punked or maybe they don't do a good job with delivery. I was really shocked by the rude treatment I received by the Generation Z staff who works here. Definitely won't be back. Such a shame. I wrote a glowing review for this place many years ago when it was great and had many a good meal from here since I used to live in the neighborhood. Maybe its under new ownership? So sad to see such a great institution going to the wayside. And some of these reviews are showing a pattern of service problems. No wonder they close so early now - no one comes. If you come here expecting deep dish you will be disappointed, but come expecting a cheesy pan pizza you will be extremely pleased. This place is a fun local hangout with pan pizzas where the cheese is abundant and melts over the edge creating a nice crisp. My husband and I really enjoyed our visit including the interesting art painted on the table tops and around the room. We were amused to see them serving Stewarts bottled soda. I decided to try Matthew's pizza after reading about how popular the crab pizza is. Upon entering, there's about ten tables available, and we had no problem grabbing a table for five. The severs are friendly, and everyone in the restaurant seemed to be regulars. Typically, I prefer thin crust pizza, but Matthew's has more of a thick crust pizza (not quite a Chicago style). Even with my differing preference, I enjoyed a chewy type of crust. The pizza itself was okay if you're craving crab pizza (very specific craving), but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here since the pizza is a bit bland. I also wished there were more crab and some old bay on the pizza to highlight the flavor since the taste of crab was a bit lost in the heaviness of the pizza. All in all this is a solid option, but you might want to ask for some extra crab and bring your own seasonings spice things up! read more

There are many diverse opinions on Matthews Pizza and I'm admittedly in the "love it" camp. This is truly my favorite pizza in Baltimore. A very unique pizza, they have a delicious sauce and great cheese , however the Caramelization of the crust is what makes this pizza truly remarkable. Go for the pizza...stay for the converstion with the waitress. What a place! Wlaking distance from Little Italy...the salads are so big that you will need to share. The blue cheese dressing seemed home made. I had the meatball appetizer whixh was two in sauce. The sauce was delicious. Meatballs were a little dry...bit that sauce! I alao ordered a Margarita puzza with onions. The crust seems fried, but either way...it was delicious. I ate the entire 10 inch pizza...I could not help myself. They also have frozen pies to go! Oricea are resaonable and there are just a few tables mostly filled with locals, but they have a pretty busy take-out business. They wrap the pizza in butcher paper to take out and serve it at your able using two paper plates to make a pedestal to take just so the crust stays crispy. Just so delicious! My friend brought me here in my first trip to Baltimore. We had the crab pizza and the 'Both cheese'. I have to say, while the crab pizza was yummy the 'both cheese' was a show stopper, it had the perfect crispy cheesy taste. First I'd like to say that I usually hit it correctly when I do my "homework" when searching for restaurants in an area we will be visiting. I search a few different cuisines and when my wife said she was in the mood for pizza, I honed my search. A few qualifications we were looking for were offering an antipasto salad, a bar or at least beer ( got to have beer with pizza ) and indoor dining during covid. I saw the reviews for Matthew's mentioning the style was sort of like a pan pizza, but not as thick and also saw that "thin crust" was also available for any pizza, along with the menu offering an antipasto salad. The other places I considered didn't have the antipasto, only Caesar or "tossed, house " salads. So the decision was made, Matthew's it would be. I can't express enough how disappointed we were, especially with the research conducted. We started with the antipasto salad which was okay. They rolled the meats with provolone and sliced it, not something preferred, but all in it was okay, not a deal breaker. Now the pizza on the other hand is a completely different story, It had to be the worst pizza we ever had, and that includes Ellio's frozen and Papa John's. Since they had an 8" and 10" I thought it was great because my wife and I could get different, separate pizzas. Well, we were told they were out of the 8" pizza???? I could be wrong, but I could have sworn that it doesn't matter what size your pizza is, it's the same ingredients, so how can you be out of a size??? That definitely should have been a clue, but since we traveled to the area and had a busy day we decided to stay. Okay so we ordered two pizzas, think crust. one mozzarella, mushrooms, sausage and bell peppers, the other (mine) was a the three cheese with roasted and jalapeno peppers. The thin crust was horrible, it was thinner than a NY Style on the base, seemed undercooked as I could scrape the soft dough from underneath the toppings, but how could that be when the top of the pizza was well done ( browned ), the ricotta was baked hard, not soft and creamy like a topping on a NY style, the over all flavor, other than the peppers was very bland. Thankfully they have oregano, parm, garlic, red pepper and S&P on the table. I used all and it made it better but still not good. One other item on the menu should have been a clue was that you could buy a frozen pizza to take home and bake...... ding ding ding, the light bulb went off, no reason they were out of 8" pizzas. The pizza also is served on a heavy weight paper plate on top of another inverted plate, being told that it keeps the crust from getting soggy. However interesting that is, why does it seem they are the only restaurant that serves pizza that way. If it was ingenious, then you would think it would catch on, but I guess other restaurants aren't serving frozen pizzas, there's no other reason. Another issue, on Yelp, it states there's a full bar, on the pictures of what appears to be beer bottles on some tables and on yelp there's a picture of a full bar. So when we first sat down were asked what we wanted to drink, they only had soft drinks and water. Again, okay, I settled for a Dr Pepper thinking I was mistaken. Now when I decided to write this review at home and checked out what I thought was true, but wrong, NO BAR. The last issue, was my wife wasn't feeling well ( NOT RELATED TO THE FOOD ). she had to use the restroom but the women's restroom had a sign, 'out of order" when she asked if it was out of order, the servers ( women ) told her that they don't let customers use it, that it was for employees, so she tried to use the men's room but was disgusted and couldn't. A lie of just keeping true to the "out of order" sign would have been better or how about changing the signs and labeling one as employees only. I will say, they did a good job with covid, and service was good. On those two items I'd give them 4 stars, but adding the food, ugh. And to think back, when we first sat down, my wife asked if I wanted to stay and I replied, I'm okay are you? Damn, should have went with our guts ( which ended up not be happy with us ) Matter of fact, I just went back up to the top of my review and changed from two stars to one as writing this brought back the memories. As far as I can remember, this is the first time that after reading the raving reviews I was wrong with the decision to go here other than two other places I considered. The next day and then the drive home I kept thinking about the pizza and not in a good way, I couldn't wait to get a good pizza, so when we arrived home, neither one of us were really hungry, but we ordered a pizza from our local shop....... aaaahhhh much better. I should have paid more attention to the other one and two star reviews, because they're pretty on point, I realize these review like any other, are subjective, but how can so many be wrong, is there something in the water? read more

Found out about this place from an MSN article titled, "Best Pizza In Every State", thus I took a quick road trip to Baltimore and it was worth it. The surrounding neighborhood felt magical on this evening with a theatre hall across the street nestled in with row homes and colorful lights. The neighborhood was abuzz. Matthews seemed to fit in perfectly. Once inside there was a mixture of locals and passerby's. The pizza simply put was excellent. The crust was all a pizza lover could ask for with great overall texture. A vey impressive and unique vessel for carry toppings and gooey cheese, and yes there were a lot of both. I ordered the 10" Everything Pizza as well as the 10" 4 Seasons Pie Pizza (both pictured). We also ordered the veal Parmesan sliders appetizer (pictured) and Shrimp Spaghetti (also pictured). The Veal Sliders were very well executed and had a comfort food vibe, with the star of the dish being the homemade cheesy sauce. The spaghetti was average, and again its' sauce being the star. Prices were very reasonable pizzas about $12 apps average of about $7 and spaghetti $11. Wait staff were attentive and restaurant ambiance was welcoming. Parking was a bit rough, since it's street only, but I found a spot by the nearby park. 5 minute walk. No big deal. Walked in, no wait to be seated. I heard great things about the Crab Pie, so I had to give it a try. Took maybe 10 minutes from order to table. It was like six little slices of heaven. Crab meat, cheeses, pizza crust...what's not to love? Highly recommend trying it for yourself. You won't be sorry. FYI: there is no sauce on it at all, so if that's not your thing, you may want to ask for a side of sauce or try something else. If you ask around for the best pizza in Baltimore, I'm sure more than one person will mention Matthew's Pizza in Highlandtown. Matthew's has been a city institution since 1943 serving old-world (deep dish) style pizza. My friend loves Our House which serves the same style of pizza as Matthew's. In an effort to try something new, I was able to sway her to head over to Highlandtown with me. We started with an order of the Garlic Bread. Bread plus garlic and oil, what's not to love? We also decided to start with an order of the Homemade Meatballs. The order comes with two massive meatballs and plenty of tomato sauce. The meatballs were flavorful and moist and many of the reviews suggested that these were a great pizza topping. Lastly, we shared a Popular Pie. This was your standard tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese pizza. The thick crust was really great, but the pizza was a little oilier than I would have liked. I would love to go back and try one of their more interesting offerings though. This is a favorite stop when I return to my hometown- mostly because I'm usually trying to fit in as many crab options as I can in each quick trip. Matthews combines my love of crab and pizza! The pizzas are on the smaller side but deep dish so they're very filling. The crab pizza is market price (think it was about $15 on my last visit) so I'd recommend trying one of those and another if you're dining with 2-3 people. For people visiting Baltimore, this isn't in one of the typical "foodie" areas so you'll need to drive or Uber but is worth the quick trip. This space and the building that the restaurant is in is too cute. We loved reading about the history. The service was welcoming and the vibe inside was family-friendly, old-school and warm. Our family was split on what we thought of the pizza. Two out of five thought the crust was amazing, but the rest of us were scratching our heads at what the appeal is.
