Perhaps other folks have had better experiences with Mattie's fried fish than I did recently. The fish in my order, along with other items in the basket such as toast, fries, shrimp and hush puppies, were fried way too hard. Every item except the fries was not seasoned and was one step away from being inedible. I also received no lemon slices with my meal. The only thing that really saved this place was a family member's fish po boy, which apparently was good. I might try this place again, but with reservations. read more

I really like this cat fish and fries basket I got at this festival! The catfish are crispy and the fries are crispy & flavorful the only thing is I wish they would have seasoned the catfish a little bit more. It was giving a more bready taste, but I still did like the flavor & the crunch. Just wish there was just a little bit more seasoning. But overall it was a good food experience! Great southern food. Got the catfish, fried wings, boudin balls, fries and toast. Everything was hot and fresh. Lots of food. The price point was on point !! The only critique I have is the boudin balls were battered with corn meal as opposed to flour and was very heavy. However, the boudin inside was delicious. Whatever they used to season the fries was super tasty it was a Cajun season. Fried chicken wings were very juicy and crispy. They have different flavors of wings but I got the battered ones! Ordered the wings and fish plate with fries. Food was seasoned well. I would go back. My only problem was the service. The older man who helped me Wasn't too friendly. Didn't crack even one smile. Barely spoke. But when he serviced a couple who might've been around the same age 50-60.. it seemed like he was all smiles. There is no inside dining dining. I was not crazy about the fish it didn't seem like real catfish and the pieces were rather small. In my opinion, Mattie's was one of the best food vendors who attended the Ziegenbock festival at Sam Houston Race Park last weekend. There was a long line but their service was quick and organized. I ordered the fried catfish dinner for $10.00 and it came with 4 pieces of fried catfish, toast, and french fries. I added an Arnold Palmer (iced tea + lemonade) beverage for a couple more bucks. The friend catfish was immediately breaded and tossed into the fryer as soon as I ordered it so I knew my food was going to be fresh and piping hot. A couple of the catfish pieces were thin filets; however, the other two pieces were thicker and more substantial. I split this catfish dinner with 3 other people and we were all pretty satisfied with one piece of fish and some french fries. It was a nice "snack" for us but if I had ordered the catfish dinner for myself, I would have been absolutely stuffed. The seasoning on the fish had a "kick" to it but it wasn't exactly Cajun nor spicy... It was almost just like a really good salt and pepper seasoning with a mixture of cornmeal and flour breading. The breading was crispy and the filet was nice and flaky on the inside. I haven't been to the actual restaurant but I am interested in trying more food from Mattie's! read more

This is a neighborhood place that is really good. Food is a 5 star taste! It's a food shack. A place to wear your cut offs and t- shirt , just chill and enjoy great deep fried food.
