Wow what a great place in downtown Covington, a jewel of a historic town. Want to explore more and Mattina Bella gives me a reason to come again, and again, and again. Especially for the yummy brunch: you need at least 8 visits to try the different omelettes: my group was thumbs up to the lump crab omelette. Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon is another winner. Both diners loved the creamy yet not overpowering hollandaise sauce. Real hungry? Go for the waffles or pancakes: huge, fluffy, perfect. Coffee is spot on and a word about service: outstanding. A surprise because often in the small town places the service is uneven. And for the traditionalists--like me--the eggs, bacon, grits breakfast is near perfect, thick crispy bacon and grits of a perfect consistency. Okay, let's start with with decor. Very "old school" chairs, hard and pine colored sit immediately straight up with terrible noises as they scrape across the floor being dragged out from under the table or pushed under. The rest of the decor is mostly non committal to a certain design style and the tables are covered with white paper, made anew for each new set of customers,a feature which I like. The inside of this place is like being at a train station, so LOUD. Obnoxiously loud, if you are someone with PTSD for loud noises do not come here, or any anxiety of people sitting closely together with a lot of loud noises. I couldn't enjoy my very tasty breakfast because the atmosphere was so crazy. Next, our server was not a happy camper and forced smiles along with about half of the wait staff from what I could gander. News flash, you're customer will know if you are being genuine or not. Lastly, the food is awesome. Everything we ordered was good except the grits which were beyond bland, no flavor at all. Pancakes are probably top 3 best I've eaten in my whole life. The omelettes were cooked perfectly, no browned eggs. The biscuits were tender and flaky! The sourdough toast on point! Sausage patties are very thin, look like pre-frozen, not impressed but the bacon very very good and cooked perfectly. To the staff: perk up or at least be genuine, your customer wants you to be yourself, pretending not needed. Secondly, get some good homemade apple butter and jelly for those biscuits, the corporate company jelly/jam does them no justice whatsoever. read more

Matina Bella is great. On our most recent trip we waited till 10 so we could beat the breakfast rush. We arrived and were seated immediately. We ordered the American burger, eggs sardou, a kids breakfast and a waffle with blueberries. Even though the place was packed, and we were seated in a corner, we had great service. Our coffee was always full, and we never needed to flag down our server. The food was very good. My burger was perfectly cooked, juicy and flavorful. The lettuce and tomato that topped the burger were very fresh and of very high quality. I would even go out on a limb and call this a gourmet burger. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The eggs sardou were described as the best my dining companion had ever tasted. I am personally not a fan of spinach so I cant confirm or refute this description so I will have to take their word for it. The kids breakfast is a great deal. Scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes for around five bucks. The waffle was obviously homemade came with wonderful blueberries. One thing that makes their meals so enjoyable is the quality of the ingredients. Everything we had was made with fresh high quality ingredients. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The restaurant is in a great location in downtown old Covington. If the weather is nice, you can even eat at one of their sidewalk tables. I highly recommend Matina Bella. read more

Used to be a favorite place ... but service was horrible this time. Ordered coffee and No cream on table - took me a while to catch the attention of server to ask for some. Then my server and another disappeared in to an office behind closed door while I waited to order. Finally I had to ask the only lady working if I could order. She went and got my server from the office. My server then came to table with terrible attitude like I was disturbing her. She continued to have an attitude thru rest of meal including plopping my plate down when my food came out causing the food to slid all over the plate. Luckily another server checked on me ... mine never came back till she came with the check. Her name from the check was Ally - with red hair. Most importantly, there's a parking lot right next to this restaurant. Very convenient. My grandma loves this place for breakfast, so we've been quite a few times. They have coffee with free refills, I'm instantly in love. Lol. I like to get their omelettes, personally. Now, if you're expecting a massive omelette like at IHOP, you will be disappointed. These are a nice normal size and taste way better. However, all of their food tastes like something I could easily make at home. So there's no unique or novel factor to draw me in to spending more money eating out, when I could just stay in. The only entree I've gotten that is unique is the Jumbo Lump Crabmeat Omelette. It has plenty of crab, cream cheese and mushrooms. Personally, I don't like the cream cheese. I feel like a different cheese would be better. They used to have a shrimp and grits special, which my relatives from out of town absolutely loved. But it's only seasonal, not available at the moment. My cousin was so disappointed. It's not very spacious, so all the tables are pretty close together. And you get the feeling they really want you leave if you linger too long chatting. Also, when the lunch crowd rolls in, acoustics are awful and it gets extremely loud and hard to hold a conversation. Besides that, the servers are usually super friendly and efficient. read more

Was recently in Louisiana to visit family for the holidays and spent New Year's Eve in Covington at a friend's party. Before heading to the New Orleans airport for a New Year's flight, we hoped to squeeze in a little more vacation fun. Bingo - they were open - I think it may have been the only breakfast option on New Year's Day. We must have hit a magical window of time because we only had to wait a few minutes. We brought our kids out to eat one lazy Saturday morning to this BEAUTIFUL establishment. We came VERY casual, and straight out of bed. Warning, if you do this you might feel a little weird (we did not, but we are not the type to....care) it's a bit fancier than I expected! The inside holds that FQ theory well. Our youngest ordered the Bambino (the only thing on the kid's menu) and loved it, but he's easy to please. The oldest ordered a Belgium waffle which was cooked & crisped perfectly, with a generous side of bacon. My SO and I both ordered lump crab meat dishes! This is where it gets exciting. I ordered the Jumbo Lump Crab omelette with toast & home-style hashbrowns and the SO ordered the Blue Crab Benedict (WHOANAW). The portion of lump crab meat was GINORMOUS! Well worth the extra doll hairs you pay for that southern lumpy goodness! If you're feeling froggy, leap on over to this gorgeous downtown breakfast & lunch joint!
