A great experience all around! We all loved our food here and felt so welcome! Our server was excellent! He was happy, upbeat and had a lighthearted demeanor. I wasn't too hungry so I ordered an app for my entree, the bruschetta. It came loaded with seasoned tomato pieces. Hubby ordered the pasta with clams in a spicy sauce. There was a misunderstanding with his meal. When hubby asked questions about the carbonara, our server thought he ordered the carbonara when he actually decided on the pasta with clams. When the wrong meal was brought over, our server escalated to his manager who then offered to exchange his meal. They kept apologizing for the mixup but honestly, they already handled it well by replacing it without issues. The pasta dish was so good! I scooped the extra sauce with my crostini and really enjoyed it. The clams were meaty and fresh too. Daughter ordered the pasta with meat sauce- also very good. This small restaurant has tables pretty close together and is part of a hotel. If anything needs to be improved, it's the ventilation. Afterwards, our clothes had heavy food scents! read more

The service was great. We were seated immediately when we arrived for our reservation. The wait staff were attentive without hovering. We started with the bruschetta which was tasty and the toast was lightly toasted without being that over toasted, cut your mouth, hard bread. For our mains, I had the wild mushroom pasta which I really enjoyed. None of the "dirt taste" other reviewers commented about, just lovely mushroom taste, great al dente pasta. My dining partner had the mama's lasagna. He said it was good, and was a very large portion of, but said it was a bit salty. Overall a wonderful meal. Delish! The service was so so but in fairness it was a busy Friday night- I highly recommend reservations. We had a mishap where they topped off our sparkling water with tap, and it took a really long time to get our replacement sparkling water. We got the burrata and Caesar salad to start. Caesar salad was perfect! I got the carbonara as my meal, light on the bacon and it was yummy! My mom got the seafood linguini and enjoyed and a friend got the stuffed mannacoti and also enjoyed! On a cold and rainy day in Quebec City, my friend and I were looking for a little lunch near our hotel. Turns out Il Matto is just across the street and a few steps from Hotel Le Priori. A quick glance at the menu and we decided, yep, we can eat here. During lunch you can get a choice of appetizer and main for a set price. We elected to get the margarita pizza. I had the cream of broccoli soup and my friend chose the Caprese salad. The soup was exactly what I needed on a cold, rainy day. D enjoyed her salad as well. Turns out we could have just shared one pizza because it was bigger than our stomachs. The crust had the perfect char on it, and it was topped with plenty of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and fresh basil. The spicy olive oil was a nice addition. We had very early dinner reservations, so were the first customers but it's such a popular establishment that it filled up quickly. The decor is modern with two very large round chandeliers. Service was great, it was a little difficult to ascertain who our server was because different staff members stopped by our table to deliver our food, fill our waters, or check on our meals. Very disappointing. Bread was uninspired and the olive oil and balsamic did not have any herbs. The Caesar salad was too creamy. The eggplant was good. The lobster risotto had good risotto, but the lobster was very overcooked and rubbery. The salmon was fishy, but the pasta was very El Dante. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant. It also took an hour and 20 minutes just to get our appetizers out while other tables around us were being served. Very disappointing. read more

Wow. Yes. I will be back. This was amazing Italian food, especially for a restaurant within a hotel. The truffle pasta was AMAZING but honestly my favorite dish was the gnocchi which I had seen on yelp and was the whole reason we came to this restaurant. The service was impeccable. The volume is a little loud so IF that matters to you, something to consider. It doesn't both me and we got chatting with the man sitting next to us. I will say it was a lot of tourists so don't expect to be sitting between many French speaking locals. Matto was hands-down the best Italian food I've ever had and I don't say that lightly. It was also the best meal we had during our entire Quebec City trip. We were staying at the hotel and noticed this spot was buzzing with people as we walked out one evening. After wandering the city in search of dinner, we decided to come back, even though it was a random Tuesday and still packed. When we asked for a table, they told us to come back in about 1.5 hours since we didn't have a reservation but by some stroke of luck, a table opened up and they were able to seat us. We were so grateful they did. Everything about the experience was wonderful. The food was perfectly timed and absolutely delicious. The service was warm, attentive, and made the meal feel even more special. My family still talks about how much we enjoyed both the food and the people. I can't recommend this place enough. Went here after wife read reviews. They were spot on. This fairly small, crowded place had great food. We sat at the bar, the service was prompt and efficient . The place is a touch loud, but otherwise a wonderful dinner. I had the caesar salad (comes with Bacon) and my wife had the avocado salad. For a meal, the bartender suggested the Linguini frutti di mare with a cream sauce- great choice. My wife had a margharita pizza. The food was very tasty, served hot and a nice atmosphere. We had the BEST dinner at Matto during our recent trip to Quebec. We loved everything about it. For starters they set us up in a little room off to the side which was perfect for our party of 6. It provided the perfect setting for a nice family meal. Our waiter was so helpful and nice, spending as much time as we needed explaining the many options on the menu so each person could get just what they wanted. And the most important part of the visit - the food was incredible. We all cleaned our plates. We all tried something different and every meal was incredible. They also serve really nice bread to start with oil and balsamic but we learned later that the have a delicious hot oil for the pizza that next time we'll ask for with the bread. I think the stand out meal from the evening was the carbonara. I was really skeptical when my mother in law ordered it but it was outstanding. It would definitely be my order next time! We also tried a pizza, the angelotti, frutti di mare, penne with meatballs and red sauce and pasta with butter (for the picky eater in our crew). They take reservations and seated us right on time. It seemed like a really popular spot even on the later end (we were there 8:30-10) but it was very well run and we didn't have any issues. Highly recommend this great spot! read more

Recommendation from a former resident of Quebec City we were able to reserve a last seating of the night. It was a packed house at Matto, making for a toasty entrance but cooled down significantly once the earlier seating dispersed. My wife & I were met by waiter Max who informed us it was busier than usual but that he wouldn't take long or forget about us. And he was true to his word. Drink order placed and quickly delivered along with a plate of fresh bread butter including a plate of oil & vinegar for dipping. The food was excellent. The bruschetta was particularly well done with a mountain of fresh diced tomatoes oozing with garlic flavour on toasted bread. The burrata appetizer was also very enjoyable and served with toasted bread and a thick and sweet marinara sauce. The pizza with 4 cheeses and fig jam was spectacular and authentic as was my wife's lobster papardelle. The restaurant was absolutely packed and reservations were essential. While service started out excellent, once we got our food, it tapered off in a disappointing way. We had to ask twice and wait about 25 minutes to have our water refilled. After sharing a dessert we waited another 15 minutes before flagging down our waiter and asking for the bill. The bill came 5 minutes later. Then another 15 minute wait for him to arrive with the credit card machine. We spotted our waiter chatting with other tables, doing something at the bar......basically anything and everything except making eye contact with us. It would have been longer, but we were tired and it was already 10pm, so I got up and walked over to the bar, where the waiter was standing and told him that I wanted to pay. He apologized for the delay and so I decided to leave him a healthy tip despite the aggravation. N.B.: Once the bill is requested and brought to the customer, the credit card terminal should follow within a few minutes maximum. If I wasn't ready to leave and wanted to linger ad infinitum, I wouldn't have asked for the bill. It's a small rule to remember that makes a big difference at the end of a meal. We were looking at the menu and this couple walked out and said, "Don't look any further. Go in! This is our second time coming back!" So we took a gamble and walked in without a reservation. The friendly host said he had a reservation for 9 at 7, and if we weren't more than 2 hours, he could seat us (we were there at 5pm). Why not? The inside is very hip and chic. We felt a little under dressed, but that didn't matter. Our server was very friendly and from Rome, which was great because we had something to talk about. They have a very extensive wine list but I was able to find a reasonably priced wine from the La Lepre Delle Fonti winery. We ordered the bruschetta which came out on buttery grilled bread with flavorful tomatoes. I ordered the Salade della Mamma, only because I loved the name! But a bountiful salad of mixed greens came out with a wonderful citrus dressing. Jonesy had the Salade César which came out with a slice of crispy bacon....nice! For dinner I ordered the Penne Arrabiata which had a nice spicy flavor to it, and Jonesy tried Spaghetti alla Carbonara for the first time. He gave me a taste, and though the flavors were very good, I still compare any carbonara to the one I had in Rome. Nothing has come close. I know, each restaurant prepares it differently, but I can dream can't I? Again, the service was excellent, and everything was timed perfectly.
