So happy I came across Richard's yelp page! It was our first time in Maui to celebrate our baby's first birthday and our family photos cannot be any greater. The location, setting, and lighting at the time he proposed was just absolutely perfect. You can tell Richard is a very experience photographer since a few minutes into our session, my son busted his lip open running downhill with his sister. Hubby and I were basically in distress, but Richard remained calm, compassionate, and very patient given the circumstance (family of 5; 3 little kids). With all of the commotion, Richard still managed to send us over 200 beautiful photos to choose from. Only downside is I don't have enough walls to print it all. If you are looking for a wedding, family or portrait photographer in Maui, Richard is our absolute favorite! My husband and I planned our Maui wedding from Oregon 15 years ago and at the time, we reached out to Richard and was instantly happy with his warmth and very pleasant nature. He was extremely responsive and easy to work with. His photography stood out to us due to his attention to detail, lighting, emotion and playfulness. And he exceeded our expectations - we absolutely adore our wedding photos and STILL receive the best compliments! As a local to the island, he was able to guide us about locations, lighting during the day for the best shots and he surprised us with a few extra delights to our photo list. Fast forward 15 years (Aug '21) and we are back on Maui to celebrate our milestone anniversary. Due to COVID it was a last-minute trip and we contacted Richard only a few days prior to our arrival. My husband and I now have two little girls and Richard agreed to do family portraits for us and I was able to arrange a visit to our wedding site. We had not seen Richard in 15 years, but it felt like nothing had changed. It was a pleasure to work with him again. If you're in the Maui area and looking for a photographer who is great to work with and helps you with ideas and poses for a photoshoot you have to go with Richard. I was on a time crunch due to a last minute trip plan and I found Richard through the yelp "request a quote". Richard responded promptly and answered all my questions and concerns. He recommended shooting at the Fairmont Kea Lani which turned out to be a beautiful hotel and guided us in several poses down to the beach. He captured a beautiful golden hour and a moment in time we will never forget. I also forgot to mention I had a surprise during the shoot and Richard kept it a secret all the way to the reveal! My wife (fiance at the time) and I were looking for a wedding photographer in Maui for our wedding and boy were we glad that we found Richard. Richard Marks is a remarkable artist, but beyond that he was able to make our wedding day an experience that we will never forget. He was great to work with prior in being quick to respond to email and phone calls. He and our Pastor Kirk Boes were in contact, which was lovely not having to be the middle man. I'm late to writing this review, but was reminded of the great work Richard did for us after looking through our wedding album recently. From a Groom's perspective, I'm not one who looks forward to having my picture taking, I don't like to pose or wait, but Richard made the experience relaxed and fun and the pictures show it. I think he got more pictures of me actually smiling than had been previously taken in my lifetime! From a technical perspective, his work is amazing, Richard is a master at lighting and composition and he knows the landscape of Maui and its seasonal variations in both. He photographed us at two times of the year, in the fall for engagement photos and in early summer for our wedding photos - both times he managed to know exactly when and where to shoot to get the images we were looking for. He is an artist, but unlike many artists, he works closely with the customer to make sure the pictures represent your vision, and not just his, that was a distinction that stood out for me. Finally, he's a really great person to work with and he exudes the spirit of Aloha! When we come back to photograph our kids on Maui, or renew our vows, I hope Richard is still behind the lens and we can work with him again. read more
