My husband and I recently traveled to Maui for a honeymoon/babymoon. To commemorate the trip, we decided to book a photography session. I admittedly looked into things later than I should have and was relieved when Matthew told me he was available the day before we departed back to the Mainland. We opted for a 2-hour sunset session as I wanted to capture some of those beautiful Hawaiian shave-ice colored skies! We were pleasantly surprised when both Matthew and Madelynne showed up -- I wasn't expecting a second shooter! My husband is a bit shy/nervous in front of the camera, but these two made it so fun and easy! (In fact, after the trip my husband admitted the photography session was a major highlight of our vacation!) They were great at directing and open to ideas. They also gave us a few moments to enjoy the sunset to ourselves which made for some great candid shots. They have an excellent eye for capturing both expressions, moments, and of course, the breathtaking landscape of Hawaii. (definitely check out their website and blog -- they have the ability to capture lovely images at all times of day -- early morning, midday, sunset, and even the beautiful starlit sky) We started out in the early evening at our hotel and moved down to a secluded beach later for the sunset session. I honestly did not know exactly what to expect, but after receiving the images (super quick to boot - the turn around time for our session was about a week!!!) I was FLOORED - - I loved just about every single picture. Their style is so unique and unexpected...sophisticated, artistic yet accessible, playful and romantic. You'll definitely have a few pictures that you'll want to blow up and hang above the fireplace! :) For the quality of work you are getting, they are a STEAL. After doing some other research online, I am convinced they are one of the best on the island. I was also quite pleased with their response time -- communicating and coordinating was easy. Although Matthew and Madelynne aren't natives, they really do embody the spirit of the islands -- they are incredibly knowledgeable about island history (in fact, aside from their photography, I think they also do tours!) and spiced up our session with fun facts about Maui and the surrounding islands. First, let me say that we haven't seen all our final photos yet but I am so happy with our experience shooting with Matt and Maddy that I figured I'd post a review now based on the 2 teaser shots they sent and our great experience! If you're looking for Maui-based photographers who can capture the majesty of the island scenery with a photojournalistic style that still puts the people as the focus, you need to book the Maui Creative Photography team! It takes real talent to not let the beauty of Maui steal all the attention away from the subjects. We started taking annual family photos 3 years ago and while I don't always like photos of myself, I realized it was such a special way to document our family and preserve special moments. When we planned our second trip to Maui, I realized that it would be awesome to get a beach family photo session. I started googling Maui photographers, spending hours on their websites/blogs and reading Yelp reviews. I didn't feel a connection when reviewing the portfolios of some of the "big names" on Maui who have TONS of Yelp reviews. While I usually get nervous when I see a Yelp vendor with less than 10 reviews, I decided to go with my gut. I'm so grateful to the other Yelpers who shared their experiences with Matt and Maddy and wanted to make sure to add my own review. Go through their entire blog and you'll be so amazed by the stunning scenic shots, the artistic composition/framing of their subjects, the emotions that jump off the page, and the little details that they noticed. I requested a sunrise photo shoot because we stayed on California time and my 5 year old was in bed each night before sunset. Maddy and Matt were waiting for us at 6:30 am at the beach they suggested that was 5 minutes from our condo in Wailea. It was such a great choice with a number of fantastic backdrops: the dark black lava by the water, the vibrant green leafy ground cover (not sure what it's called but I saw it on several beaches), the sprawling tree branches, the golden sand, and even a lovely canopy of leafy trees. My youngest does not like taking photos, but Maddy and Matt had her laughing and jumping in no time. While one took the girls to shoot near the sand, the other took my husband and me near the lava rock. We had twice as many shots as I expected because they often shot different pairs of us (or solo shots) simultaneously. They were both so friendly and patient, they really put us all at ease. I am thrilled with our experience even though I haven't even seen the rest of the photos yet! That's got to be a true testament to how great these two are! He simply has an eye for capturing the best in every photos - from the lighting, the poses, the scenery, the environment, and especially the people. Of course we were already thrilled and happy with the occasion / proposal, but Matthew made us feel like rockstars on this special moment in our lives. Outstanding. Incredible. Talented beyond belief. My now-fiance arranged to propose to me at the top of Haleakala and had the amazing sense (and great luck) to find Matt and Madelynne to play paparazzi for the occasion. They literally waited for us at the top of a mountain; hid amongst the crowd; and followed us around (I later found out) waiting for the moment of the proposal. After the question was popped and "Yes" was said, Matt and Madelynne did a short photo-session as the sun was setting. My boyfriend and I decided to get our photos done in Maui since we thought it would be a good way to commemorate our time there. I think it was one of the most fun things we did while in Maui! The reason why I picked their service in the first place was because their photography spoke to me - their photos didn't look forced or cheesy/staged and that was a concern of mine as I was looking through various photographers and their photography. My fiance and I are from Kansas City and got engaged right before my family reunion on Maui. I e-mailed back and forth with a few photographers, and chose Maui Creative Photography because I loved their portfolio, their pricing is fair and comparable to other photographers, they were able to make recommendations on location based on what I was envisioning, and they were willing to split the session (30 minutes family photos / 30 minutes engagement session). When we first arrived we met Matthew and Madelynne. They are fun and easy going, made us all feel comfortable, and knew how to lead and direct the session. I was worried doing engagement pictures with my parents there would be awkward, but because there were two photographers they were able to split us up. I cannot say enough good things about Matthew and Madelynne. They are excellent photographers. We had an engagement session with them to get comfortable in front of the camera. When we arrived at the location they were already there and had already walked around and scouted locations they wanted to use. They were amazing during the session. They provided direction which we definitely needed. They had us climbing up lava rock and into pools, it was awesome and they were right there with us doing anything they needed to do to get the shot. I was going for a trip to Maui with my girlfriend and I planned to do a proposal to her and hire a local photographer to capture the moment. This review has been long overdue. My wife, Christine, and I got married in Maui on 3/21/2015. Since we live in Los Angeles, we planned everything from LA. Choosing Maui Creative for our photography was the best decision that we made. Matt and Madelynne were extremely responsive from the moment we contacted them. They even offered a pre-wedding session at a location of our choice so that we could get together and get to know each other before the wedding day. We met Matt and Madelynne at a secluded beach and took some amazing photos. Matt and Madelynne are so adventurous and creative. We allowed our daughter to surf the web and pick the photographer of her choice...and we are so glad she picked Matthew and Madelynne!! They were amazing! Professional, creative, easy to communicate with. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. I wanted to add a few family poses to the session and they made sure to capture our family without making us feel rushed. They listened to all of us and made us feel very comfortable during the entire session. Working with Matthew and Madelynne was fantastic!
