Mahalo Maui Spearfishing and Keoki! That. Was. Amazing. 13/10 would do again and again. All of it was perfect and enjoyable and fulfilling. Keoki made the entire outing just by being himself. His instruction, personality, tips, attitude, stories, communication, skill... all the things you'd want in an instructor for a 101 class ~ spot on. Thank you so much brada for the experience ~ we are definitely going to be finding a way to continue spear fishing outside of Hawaii. My favorite part??? We found an octopus and got the chance to have to crawl all over us and hangout for a while before we released it back into the Sea... it was sooooo cool. So so cool. Maybe I go re-watch My Octopus Teacher hahaha. Mahalo mahalo mahalo!

Big ol' meaty Roi Keokei caught next to Han's little wimpy limp Roi. Roi eat 150 reef fish per year and need to be removed.

Great challenging outing and adventure if you are a beginner looking for a first time spear fishing experience. Guides spent two hours on land going over basics of breath holds and technique before getting into the water. Hans was my guide and his breath hold ability was impressive. On our group trip, we went out of an area just south of Lahaina. The guide knew all of the local area fish, which ones were good to eat, and the behaviors of each, such as how skittish they were and how to stalk them. He also went down with some clients to make sure they were okay upon resurfacing after a shot at a fish. Keokei, the other guide was very entertaining, and has extensive knowledge of the greater area fishing spots. Both guides caught large invasive Roi and several other edible fish on our outing. The one downside of this outfit (an area that they could greatly improve upon) is that they lacked full wetsuits with hoods. They only offered short wetsuits without hoods which were not suitable to myself as I get cold easily. They could also use larger inflatables for better breathe up resting for all clients. I would not recommend this 101 outing to someone who has freediving or spearfishing experience as it is the essentials for folks who have never been exposed to it. That being said, it is great for families and groups of friends that want to try it out in a safe setting with competent guides who will help you troubleshoot issues and let you learn about the gear and sport.

If you're looking for some local adventure on the island this is the place to go!! The cool thing about this excursion is that you're hunting for game fish or invasive species that harm the reefs. It's not like you shooting a bunch of beautiful reef fish. They really are good ethical guys who genuinely love the sport of spear fishing. The class starts off with some breathing practice and techniques for free diving. As well as some free diving safety procedures. Bobby then took us out to the ocean to practice our skills and teach us how to use the spear gun. Everything was taken at a great pace to ensure everyone's comfort and safety. It was beautiful and so much fun trying to identify our hunt. We split into two groups with two guides, and Each group had a unique experience. We swam with a pack of 20+ sea turtles. The other group ended up getting a 25 pound fish. Im sure the results will vary, but no matter what it was beautiful and a fun skill to learn.

My husband and I had a FANTASTIC morning with Bobby and Joey and the rest of our group. Maui Spearfishing Academy was highly recommended in our travel book, and the Yelp reviews echo all the good things. For the tldr version, this is a great day even if you don't get anything. The snorkeling and hunt alone makes it worth it. I had decent expectations for myself for how the day would go, knowing I probably wouldn't be able to spear one, but hoping my husband would. The first half of the morning, Bobby gave us some of his own background, some information on the fish we were going to be going after, safety information, etc. We got wet suit shirts, flippers, and snorkel masks. We went on an overcast day (weird weather for the area), so Bobby and Joey thought long and hard about where they wanted to take us out. We stopped first on a beach in Kaanapali and practiced some breath holds on dry land. This was a very relaxing time, and Bobby gave us some tips on how to increase the amount of time we'd be able to go. We also practiced clearing our ears, which would allow us to dive deeper. However, Bobby told us beforehand that about 1/4 to 1/3 of participants have trouble with this part, so he assumed 1 or 2 of us in the group would have have difficulty (sure enough, that was the case!). After the beach practice, we drove down the road a ways for the trip, and four of us went with Bobby while the other three went with Joey. Time FLIES in the water. We swam out pretty far, getting to see all the coral and fish on the way (we even saw some turtles and a shark! Don't worry, it wasn't interested in humans...). At about 20ft deep, we stopped for practice breath holds and to see how far down we could go. One man in the group and I couldn't clear our ears, so we were only able to go down about 10 feet or so. My husband and another man had no problem getting down 20+ feet. We swam out deeper, and before we knew it, Bobby spotted a roi and one of the guys in the group shot it on his first try! It was so awesome! Huge roi at 5lb 1oz, at just about 20ft down. The hunt was on! Before too long, my husband got a 3lb roi at about 40ft deep! We saw a few others and missed them, and then Bobby was able to get a black-tailed snapper on our way back. The one guy and I who couldn't equalize our ears didn't even mind that we didn't get a chance to hunt. It was fun to be included, try it, and get to snorkel anyway and watch the others do it! You can tell that Bobby loves what he does. I would recommend EVERYONE who comes to Maui to come here and try out spearfishing. Even women! Even though I was the only woman on our trip, I didn't feel out of place or like I wouldn't be able to do it. I want to continue to try to equalize my ears so that maybe next time I WILL be able to hunt! It was so much fun, I loved it.

One less invasive fish on the reef, it's a grouper locally called a roi.

As a result I missed half of the class and wasn't qualified for the open water session. My short review for the Wave 1 beginner freediving course is: If you're even slightly interested,…read moretake this course! Whether you're beginner or "advanced" but not certified, you won't regret it!! Since there were no other reviews here yet, I decided to also write an in-depth (see what I did there?) one. Now the long review... I'm so glad that I enrolled in the freediver certification course with Honolulu Freedivers. I've been an avid snorkeler for decades, competed in distance freestyle ocean swims, paddling competitions and triathlons--even taught some folks how to swim. I LOVE the ocean, BUT I also love to be able to BREATHE often, whenever I want to, even more. I could dive to pool depth, but needed to pop right back up. So, freediving was always kind of a unicorn. Prior to taking the certification course, holding my breath during the exertion of ocean dives was incredibly hard for me. Despite having good cardio, the urge to breathe while swimming underwater and the desire to surface was overwhelming. I tried watching hours of YouTube "expert" videos on my own. But it didn't really help, and in retrospect I'm lucky to not have accidentally drowned trying some of the stuff I saw. In the two-day, info-packed beginner course (Wave 1), Derek's instruction and his course materials helped me to fully understand my self-inflicted limitations. On the first day, extended my person best static (land) breath hold by a full minute! In the water, I was able to reach AND RELAX FOR A WHILE at a depth I would have thought impossible for me--then on day two, I DOUBLED that distance to earn my certification (20 meters). Derek is ultra-experienced, patient, friendly and puts safety first during dives. His assistant kept an extra set of eyes on us and provided additional instruction/feedback. The pre-dive breathe up and the post-dive recovery were drilled extensively because of their importance. He gave precise, helpful critiques. And, because he limits his class size, everyone had more than enough time and it was fun!! I felt very safe doing all the dives. Some went perfectly, and for the ones where I lapsed on technique, Derek was right there to keep me from making things worse for myself. Then at the surface after recovery he was quick to give corrective instruction for the next dive. Most importantly, I also learned how to confidently deal with dive buddy emergencies: shallow water blackout, loss of motor control, cramps, etc. I now have increased value as a dive buddy for my friends, family and fellow divers because of this class. With what I learned, I might save a life one day, maybe my own. An added bonus is that any diver certified through this class, has an open invitation to attend recurrent Honolulu Freedivers boat dives and weekly pool training, and also becomes a member of an international online community group (Molchanovs) where even more material is accessible. I took the class with two other friends and made a new friend, as a tourist also dropped in to attend. We all agreed it was well worth the investment! Thanks, Derek and V!!

I feel much more confident going diving now, with the safety measures and rescue techniques we learned. Great local dive shop as well (Kona Honu Divers) with an excellent range of equipment. Highly recommend this class and shop. One caveat for participants - don't necessarily expect to gain the certification on your first try, as you have to both gain a certain depth and demonstrate mastery of various techniques. Also - and this is my opinion - you should have solid water experience and be in decent shape fitness-wise to be able to do what is required for this class. Just one suggestion for running the class - I felt that it would have been more ideal to have an even number of participants than an odd number like we did. (I know that logistically that might be challenging, but would have made a better experience for me personally.) A close friend and I had very intentionally planned taking the class together - we're at a similar level of skill and fitness, and are comfortable with each other. I wanted to work with just my partner, but instead we were stuck with another person for a group of 3 that I didn't feel was a good fit, and it did make things more stressful and took away from what my experience could have been. I realize that this isn't necessarily most people's plan when taking the class (the other people all came solo), but for me personally I would never come solo because I don't want to work with someone I don't know. I'll make sure that next time we take a class, to have a quiet word to the instructor before the in-water parts of the class that we really just want to work in our partnership.

Despite being a beginner, I felt very welcomed to the group and appreciated Elaine's careful attention to our group's safety and comfort. Her experience as a clinician and emphasis on mental health and making freediving as accessible as possible resonated with me, which is why I chose to take my Level 1 course with Affinity Diving. My experience with Affinity Diving exceeded all my expectations. Elaine was patient, receptive to various learning styles and experience levels in our group, and was able to tailor the course to meet everyone's individual needs. Our theory portion of the course was outside on Magic Island which was wonderful compared to a traditional classroom setting, and having the lagoon which meets the criteria for the confined water portion of the course was really nice because it was less cramped than a swimming pool which is more common for other courses. Elaine also provided nearly all the equipment including weight belts, weights, masks, fins, even spare neoprene pants and tops, which not all schools provide. This also gave us a chance to try out gear that we weren't all necessarily in the position to be able to upgrade right away. I passed my exam, but did not pass my skills test at the end of Day 2. Elaine was encouraging and unlike other instructors who leave it up to the student to reschedule make up sessions, Elaine took the initiative to offer times to reschedule to anyone that didn't pass, and encouraged me to continue attending the monthly community free diving meetups. I don't know of any other instructor or dive school who as as invested in their students success as Elaine, and about a month later after additional practice, I was able to come back and complete my final skills test. Affinity Freediving's commitment to inclusivity and community is genuine and I have come away from the course with lots of wonderful memories and new dive buddies. I cannot think of a single negative thing to say and would recommend this course and Elaine as instructor to anyone looking to discover freediving or take their existing skills to the next level. Such a unique, wonderful time!! We booked as a private group of 4 for the beginner off-shore diving…read moreexperience, as it was everyone's first time diving. Our instructor Sean was amazing!! Your first scuba experience may feel quite daunting (it was for me!) but your instructor goes over all the equipment, safety measures, and hand signals to know--that you are also required to go over in your online course, so helpful! LEADING UP TO YOUR DIVE: A lot of the prep comes before you even arrive for your dive: the online info courses and waivers (took about 20-35 min) and inputting the height and weight of each diver, so once we were ready to start heading to the beach, Dive Maui quickly got us into our wet suits, and later quickly had us fit for our masks, oxygen tanks, and weights for the vest. The indoor area where they go over the info and where you put on your wet suits also have a bathroom you can use before and after which was helpful to have a place to change afterwards. They don't have lockers or a designated place to leave your stuff, but it did kind of feel safe if you're just leaving a bag of clothes or shoes when you dive; overall, I'd recommend coming with less stuff though unless you have someone to hold your things. THE EXPERIENCE: 10/10 but that is just speaking for me LOL we got to see so much wildlife in their space: so many different kinds of fish, schools of fish cleaning off turtles (we saw around 10 turtles!), we caught to briefly look at 2 sharks chilling on the ocean floor, and saw a flounder fish in the sand. At one point, I was swimming alongside a turtle!! We had someone in our group who was not as strong a swimmer and was more nervous with all the gear so they had a harder time enjoying the experience, but our instructor was really good and intentional with making sure they were okay and walked with them slower through the experience. Otherwise, we overall really enjoyed the experience and have no regrets! It definitely feels like you get to see more of Maui's wildlife beauty in its natural place, as opposed to the more touristy, marketed Hawaii. They recommend all divers be a strong swimmer, to expand on this--as long as you are comfortable maneuvering yourself in the water (would you be able to quickly change direction if you notice you're drifting into coral or , able to swim deeper and manage how deep or shallow you stay in the water--no need to be on a swim team--it is not about speed or being able to literally dive LOL IMPORTANT: our booking did not do shallow water training at a pool or at the shore before going down to practice our skills test (how to blow water out of your mask, practicing what to do when our breather comes out of our mouth, clearing our sinuses, checking our oxygen tanks and responding to our instructor with correct hand signals of our oxygen level). So we knew we were going to practice these skills, but it can definitely be scary since you go 20 feet down and then do the skills. Yes, you need to be a decent swimmer, but I think it's more important you think about if you can stay calm and trust your instructor and the skills they are teaching you--the entire experience of using the gear and being 20-30 feet underwater takes some time to get used to, so make sure you are okay with knowing that you don't get shallow water training and can stay calm and remember to take deep breaths as you get used to breathing through your mouth only and blowing water out when you can't breathe in, rather than panicking. If you are typically able to pick up new skills and can stay calm under pressure, then totally try scuba diving!! Dive Maui will keep you safe! We parked in the nearby lot near the grocery stores. When you register, they give parking suggestions and specify where not to park to make sure you won't get a ticket or get towed parking in private spots. It would be great if they were able to have a photographer or camera to catch a few pics during the experience. Even if they charged for the pictures, that's one I would (and think many people would) pay for! especially since not many people want to bring their phone or have underwater cameras to bring along with them, let alone having to figure out how they want to hold or attach it to their gear with them (not even sure if they allow this)

(LAHAINA STRONG) When we got on our boat it we were met with the same excellent hospitality from Joe the captain and Renee the first mate! They listened to everyone who spotted whales, plus they spotted several of course. We even got "mugged" by two whales who apparently thought our boat was cool. (Mugging is when the whales hang out very close to the boat and you can not move the boat). I am sure Renee got some great gopro video because I did and she had a long pole for hers. We also had them spy hop us and later had a baby breach near the boat. Overall one of the best whale watching trips I have been on and I have taken a lot! Sorry I could not upload video.
