Garret is amazing. I've never met a technician so smart, detail oriented, and organized. A few days after going through our boat, he wrote us a lengthy 1 page email detailing everything he found (down to missing screws on the cowling), things that needed to be replaced, things that should be addressed, and items that he found that he said we could do ourselves if we wanted. We took our boat in (which is a big deal since we store it in a slip) to have them do our yearly service. Like most boat owners, we do our best to keep it maintained but also are aware that the boat had some deferred maintenance. They gave us a reasonable quote for the service and we asked them to go through the motors and give us a laundry list of items that the boat needed- and like most boats, it needed a lot. What we appreciated most was that they gave us plenty of options. Foe example, our hydraulic rams were pitting and leaking during the inspection and he gave us options down to each individual piston whether we could rebuild them, replace individual pieces, or replace the entire system, and his professional opinion on both. He showed us how our T-stat housing gaskets would leak due to corrosion and showed us how they cleaned it up and used a marine gasket maker to seal it and stop the leaks. It's not a permanent fix but the motors are 20 years old and we're just looking to get back on the water- not replace an entire engine block. When we went to pick up the boat he spent 30 minutes with us showing us everything that was done and answering our long winded questions. Before we left, the nice girls at the front desk gave us some official Honda Marine hats. Anyways, 10/10 would recommend. read more

I had an old 9 foot Apex tender for my Tiara and wanted to move up to a center consul. There were some pretty tight specifications as I wanted to be able to still access the trunk off the swim step while the tender was on the davit. Craig Maurer came on and measured the space and assured me that it would work great with the existing davit and the trunk would still be able to function even though it is just under 3 feet longer. Sure enough she sits perfectly on the swim platform davit and the longer length actually makes the launch and retrieval easier. read more

I'm a Newport native and a lifelong yachtie. I've had repeated bad experiences with repair work on my hypalon Zodiac at Maurer Marine. Good inflatable boat repair has become increasingly difficult to find in recent years. Maurer ostensibly runs a repair shop in one of the biggest yacht harbors in the world. Every time I've used them, I've experienced long delays, a prima donna attitude, and slipshod work. I would give them a work list of, say, six spots on the boat that need repair. I'd get the boat back with three of six attended to, no explanation, and a hefty bill. My last straw with them was when they put a black hypalon patch right in the middle of one of my grey gunwales--obviously creating a major eyesore on my mint condition boat. I was away this time and my wife picked up the boat, so I didn't see it until about six months later. (And they charged her something like $50 to deliver the boat to our storage space, which is literally less than a mile from their shop.) I seriously considered making them change it, or dragging them into Small Claims if they refused, but decided it wasn't worth it. Since then, I have used Sunset Inflatables in Santa Ana and been perfectly happy. Strongly recommend them over Maurer Marine for both sales and service. Perhaps use Maurer Marine for purchase and repair of fine douche bags. read more

Given the delay in getting to my appointment date, you'd think this would not be a 5 star review. But I understand that every marine mechanic in Orange County is overwhelmed with work. Every one I called, in early August, said the earliest they could get to me was either mid-September or later. Garrett kept me updated on my appointment and let me know that the date was going to slip a bit. By that time, my frustration was maxed out, but not at Maurer. When I finally did get the boat dropped off, Brynn was friendly and helpful, and Garrett told me that he might be done with it later that day. And he was! The issue was my not understanding that even with the electric start, I still needed cables for the gears and throttle from the remote to the motor. Those didn't come with the motor so I thought the electrical attachment somehow made all that work, like wireless mice or something. He also completed/repaired my misinstallation of hydraulic steering. Money well spent. The motor runs great, the install looks very nice, and the staff could not have been nicer. Decided to give these guys a try since they were closer to my house than the other outboard service folks I'd used in the past. Learned a valuable lesson here though - convenience cost me. Ask for a quote. The parts and labor were well above what I expected having had similar work done elsewhere. One example was a $115 charge for a $40 cowling gasket plus $90 to glue it on. I needed a replacement valve for my AVON inflatable. Maurer had the part so I drove to Costa Mesa for the part. The personnel at Maurer suggested I needed a special valve with a Hypalon shirt. What do I know? The cost for the special valve was $120 and the glue they recommended was $60. All told about $200 out the door. After the repair, which I did, the boat still leaked from the valve area. I contacted another repair person who fixed the problem and got a laugh, at my expense, regarding how much I paid for the part and glue. I got ripped off! Maurer will not see any future business from me. Beware of gougers! read more

I brought back a 50hp amanzi I bought from them to fix a squeal in the motor, $403.oo later they said they didn't hear a squeal or any noises, they replaced a belt that was in perfect shape, we tested the boat in newport harbor and as soon as the motor started it squealed like a loose fan belt in a car THE SAME PROBLEM RIGHT OFF THE BAT! They didnt even grease the zerk fittings, they will never see any future business from me or my friends, I never felt so RIPPED OFF,otherwise im sure they are really nice people read more

I called 9 different marine/outboard repair shops in hopes to get a part same day. They all said it couldn't be done. Not because the part wasn't in the Los Angeles area but because it was an inexpensive part that was quite a drive from the ocean. Garret turned our day around in a big way when he went out of his way to locate the part, order the part before the cut off at will call, and personally drive to get me the part. I will be back to Mauer Marine for all of my outboard repairs and maintinence. I am so very pleased with the service provided by the lady that answered the phone (Sorry Forgot the Name) I was in need of a prop for my Mercury 40HP Outboard and called pretty much all over OC to see if they can help me find a replacement but I guess nobody in this area has a clue about props because nobody could help me out. The lady that answered actually was able to input my info into their system and provide me with the new part from Mercury and also was able to have that part overnighted to me as I requested. Herd good things about maurer on fishing forums so I called Maurer Marine and spoke with Craig , I ask him questions about my 2003 proline 20' cc and he was very helpful and easy to explain to him what I needed. I ended up making an appointment on a Wednesday to have my 200 hour service done including impeller, filter, greasing. New RPM guage and other important stuff , as I had just gotten the boat. I ended up having to cancel my Wednesday appointment, so later on that wednesday i ended up being available that following friday to take it in , so called them up and they worked with me and got me in at 7 am friday morning!! So pumped !! they helped me out big time as I was leaving to Catalina Island that night at 2am Anyways They did a great Job on the boat and completed by 5pm that same day and craig even waited until 6pm for me to drive from my work in the valley , he even stayed around til about 7pm to explain what he did very clearly, they also found 2 other simple problems that could have potentially been large problem which were an old corroded fuel line and a piece to the prop that was cracked ( Craig even showed me the old parts they replaced and wow the fuel line gunked up inside and he also showed me the cracked piece) this was a great thing to see and a huge relief and I was happy to pay the extra money to have these things fixed because I was leaving to Catalina that night at 2am so it was a relief to know everything was taken care of professionally and thoroughly . All and all great experience and I would definitely go back !! And the boat ran great all day to and back from Catalina no issues!! THANKS MAURER!!! I had previously taken my boat to an outboard marine service center in Corona to get the carburetors (3) rebuilt. They gave me the boat back after 6 weeks and spending $600 and it ran worse than when I brought it in, so I had to look for another reputable repair shop that could fix what they had screwed up. I brought my boat to Maurer Marine because they were recommended to me by a local outboard repair shop that is no longer taking new clients as he is semi retired. I was also recommended to go to them by Warner Boat Sales in Orange County as they are not a certified Suzuki dealer/service center. When I arrived I was greeted by Garrett who was very knowledgeable and assured me that they would find the issues and get back to me ASAP. They are a very busy shop and after two weeks I called to see what progress had been made with my motor and I was called back by Craig the owner within 30 minutes and we spoke at great length about the problems I had been experiencing. He told me that he would personally look into it and let me know the outcome. In less than a week I was contacted by Garrett again and he said that they had found the problem and had fixed it. It was a shoddy rebuild by the previous service center. When I went in to pick up my boat they had it ready to run for me. The mechanic started the engine and it purred like a kitten. Even when I put it in gear and revved the motor it ran great. During the inspection they had found some other minor issues that they fixed for free. Wow!! I took the boat home and put it in the lake and couldn't believe how well it ran. I don't understand the issues that the previous customers have had but I couldn't be happier. I bought a 12ft Zodiac inflatable 10 years ago through them and also my Yamaha motor. When it was time to buy a new and bigger model I went back to try and support local business. After asking for a quote the owners wife quoted me $1700 MORE than what was online from the other Zodiac dealers in Oxnard and San Diego. NOTE: The competitors online price was $3950.00. They quoted me $1700 more than that. Jessica in sales stated they would match that price. Of course after ordering I was told I was misunderstood that that the price did not include shipping the boat from Zodiac to them ($255 More dollars). I don't know why I didn't leave then. After an accident with the neighboring construction company I needed a leak found and patched. The boat was dropped off to Mauer on November 11th. On December 1st the leak was found and it was suggested by Daryl their patch guy that we try an inner sealant before a patch. This method did not work so on December 17th we agreed to put on a patch that should only take 2-3 days. I paid $322.59 for the work up until that point and then another $360.06 for the repair that was going to be done. On January 19th I received a email stating the boat was still being worked on. On January 20th (34 days later) I received an email stating the boat was ready. When I picked up the boat on January 22nd I asked for someone to document the 1 year warranty on my receipt and was told by the owners wife that they only offer a 3 month warranty and then barked "who told you that?!". I informed her both Jessica and Daryl told me this. She then barked across the room at Jessica "Who told you that"....Jessica informed her Daryl did. She then rudely stated.."I'll get to the bottom of this..." and walked out of the room to find Daryl. She returned 5 minutes later with a hand written date of January 4th and a one year warranty. When I informed her it was the 22nd not the 4th she stated the warranty is from when they do the work not when you pick it up. I informed her that I had an email from the 20th stating that is when the work was finished. She did not care and stated I was lucky they were honoring it. Craig the owner then got involved. He stated he doesn't care what his employees told me he owns this business and he was going to "Go kick Daryl's ass" afterwards. He stated I was lucky that he was honoring "Anything" and even threatened to rip up my original repair contract. He stated I was getting more than I should and a couple days short on my warranty is not big deal to him. ( Note: 18 days is not a couple days it is 2 and a half weeks) Craig also stated that it was my fault for taking two of his employees statements as word and not getting it in writing. I also have repeatedly asked to be given the information for the Zodiac Rep but have not been given anything. read more
